      What exactly did you change after watching this video? I don't deal with a ton of soreness, just the usual amount for being 42, just trying to figure out a way to add some speed and power to my throws. I feel like the biggest issue I have is that I feel like I'm not following through enough. Most of the high level players that I've seen usually finish with their left shoulder forward, sometimes facing their throwing target. I feel like I end up my release with my body facing forward and my throwing arm directly out to the side. I'm doing what many would call 'short arming' my throws. Common sense would tell me to just find a way to pivot more during my throw, but when I make a conscious effort to do so I completely throw off line, usually releasing late and pulling the disc way right of target. A lot of people describe throwing a disc much like snapping a towel or cranking a lawnmower but frankly I never feel like I get either of those when I throw and I'm not sure what to change to get that type of snap or action.

Now I see your video and it confirms what I was suspecting. It isn't grip, or reaching back, or proper foot placement, that I wasn't doing correctly. It was the whip! I disagree, as I had a hard time deciphering what the last, uniquely green point in the birds eye view was supposed to represent. I couldn’t tell where the player’s hand ended and the disc began; the shades of gray were too similar. I get the concept though now, ya high has taken me a couple years worth of getting the sling effect down first. For me this whip effect works with mid ranges and only one specific driver: a Westside Seer. Otherwise, I am perfectly happy and satisfied throwing my Banshees and Leopards with a sling pivot, but that’s just me.
      All in all, I think the graphics are a great effort too, but if only it had more resolution! No amount of brightening my monitor helped and I’m not colorblind either.

    Very good. I like the graphical technique of evaluating the "whip", ie. showing it at slow and normal speed. Having that information can help deduce "whip" speed, or "tip" speed. So if the arm reachback and arm speed coming through aren't the most important thing, and the whip speed is, can't we analyze some of the top thrower from an above view, as seen here, and determine the whip speed of the top throwers? That my friend, would be some pretty good fodder.

    Dave, I’m 63. Just started playing disc golf 2 years ago. Hurt my right shoulder, started throwing left handed. Hurt my left shoulder. I get to start throwing next week again (nothing permanent on the injury). So, from one old guy to another, how can you still play? Do you only give it 50%, exercises, diet, play only once every other day or twice a week? I was addicted and played every day at lunch; there is a DG park only 5 min. from the office. And a full 18 at least one day on the weekends. I want to play, but will stay stopped if it causes injury. Thanks Dave. Live long and prosper!

    • @robinmclean8779
      @robinmclean8779 5 лет назад +2

      William, I'm no Dave D., but for what it's worth...here goes. If it matters to you, I am an MP60 State Champ, have studied 100s of Disc Videos and talk shop and injuries with over a dozen quality 50+ players regularly. I would advise you to take an 'All in' approach. That means all the things you mention (sometimes throwing 50%, diet, playing every other day, exercises)...... Also a few other things. Take up Forehand or play both left AND righty. That lets you work on having your clockwise and counter-clockwise torque be about equal!.... When you do field work, limit that torque. You might only throw 50 upshots one session. Then throw only 35 mids another day. Then 25 fairway shots. And then only 15 full drives. That also helps focus on learning from each full shot...an added bonus....... Do DG specific stretchs. Try getting more glide out of slower discs with cleaner releases. It's almost like a 'Zen of DG for OGs' kind of thing. Go 'all in' on all the things that keep you in the game....and have fun out there.

    Stand up straight and rotate your hips back and forth, to your left and then to your right and repeat. If your arms are relaxed they will flail around. Transfer your weight from trail to lead foot and rotate your hips. With some rhythm you can whip your own hand in front of you. That's all it is. It's not about muscling anything. It's about creating seperation between your lower body and your upper body (winding up) and unwinding like a coil.

      You are right. New pro players out there know what they’re talking about. You need to reach back you get so much more torque with your hips. As soon as I implemented the reach back into my drive I was getting 50 ft or more on my throws. Every sport evolves over time seems like old man is stuck in the past. Just how everyone used to think push putting was the best way to putt

      Some pros advice is to reach back as far as possible to get good distance. This might work for some people but as Dave is pointing out, almost all of the acceleration is taking part in the latter part of the throw. That is why there are guys like Seppo, Emerson Keith & Severi Saviniemi throwing elite distance without reaching far back.

      @@WickedRC I disagree. I used his advice and his other video "Pivot and Pop" this morning and birdied six baskets that I never had before because it added a good 50-60 feet on my drives.

    This is confusing. I understand you don't have to reach back...but as a beginner I NEED to reach back as I'm NOT stepping...I'm still standing still and throwing. Video clearly shows he does reach back, but as he's x stepping.

      swinging a rope with a weight on the end and letting go, where the rope is tensioned and static while swinging around.

      kruksog I’m guessing the style of throw. Im picturing a throw with a consistent sweeping motion oppose to the flexible sudden surge of energy at the end of a whipping motion. I could be way off.. just my interpretation

    I suspect this advice will work for me just like every other dg tutorial video I've watched. It all makes perfect sense. I take it to the field. Throw 100 times. And don't add 3 feet to my distance. It makes my heart sad. :(

      Video yourself throwing. It's the only real way to improve. Simon lizotte has a great video on form analysis. I suggest you watch that video. And don't try and fix everything at once. It Starts with proper footwork and you work your way up from there. I wouldn't recommend anything you see in this video. No disrespect to dave but this video is going to create a lot of inconsistency in your game
