I am 78 and just learning the game myself. Love the Diamond that you mentioned. I am not able to throw forehand and for that reason, love the MVP Uplink and Axiom Paradox mid ranges. For putters I started with MVP Anodes and still prefer them over many others I have tried. Many putters are to deep for me. Good idea to encourage us old farts to get off our backsides and get out there and do something physical.

Old dudette here, I've had some fun with the zero gravity plastics line from lattitude 64, they're extremely light, about 125g. They've got a pretty neat selection of discs in that plastic. (just 4, but really as a beginner thats more than enough.) That was key for me to finally see the full "s" curve of a throw. Thanks for a great video. Very cool to see some new ideas for light alternatives.

Finally, a video on disc golf that I can relate to. I don't think younger guys realize that if I could get my body to move the way theirs does to throw the way they do, I would be throwing the same way they do. But I can't. While I enjoy watching those channels, Robbie C's included, they are talking about things I just can't do anymore. Would love to see some instructional videos for people over 65, who throw like old fogies because we are.
A lot of good discs for our group have been mentioned and I've tried a lot of them. The Diamond and Jade are two that I like, but the one disc that would absolutely ruin my day if I lost is an Opto Air River. I can throw it just as far as any other disc I own on a straight line. The only problem I have with it is a crosswind and unfortunately, I live in a windy place. So, the disc stays in the bag more than I would prefer. It is also hard to throw on a fore hand for me. Recently obtained a Viking Cosmos in storm plastic, that is almost as good as the River, but does better in the wind.

    • @NickArnette
      @NickArnette  Год назад

Thanks so much for your comments. I had an Octo River and I never could get it to "flatten out" when I threw it. I gave it to my friend and his son is really making it fly the way it should. I've heard so many great things about the river, but I just can't make it fly as is should. Glad you're making the Opto River fly right!!

Westside underworld seems to be a great beginner driver for my newbie friends. I think a lightweight Crave could be a good first step into fairways too, as its in between a traditional mid and fairway. Rule of thumb, understable and lightweight discs will provide more glide(and usually by association, distance) to someome with a slower arm. These all seem to be great auggestions!

THANK YOU, NICK! Different bodies need different discs. People who can rapidly coil and uncoil their torso to throw with more speed often don't understand that older players, (as well as anyone not able to throw fast for a number of different reasons) need different discs and different advice to throw them well. I am 77, and the only joint I have without arthritis is my artificial hip. Couple tips: - Always warm up and stretch for 5 min! 5-10 gentle bends for the hips and legs, then 5-10 easy twists at the hip, easy rotate your arms, and your neck during stretches. Good for any age but at 58 I need to stretch before anything.
    - Always get bright color discs. It will save you so much time and headaches finding them in the trees or grass. Most of my discs are white or pink.
    - Work on throwing flat releases from a deep reach back then pulling across the chest, with out turning your wrist or moving your arm up or down at the release. Don’t try to stop your arm when you release. Let it follow through and across, this will help you not hurt yourself and make your disc go farther. These will really help you get consistent flat controlled throws.
Great channel I look forward to your other videos!

    Hi Nick,
You throw well, backhand and forehand, considering your age and you’ve only played for a couple of years. Yes, you are right about slower, more understable discs.
But what older players need to concentrate on is fitness and flexibility. It is important to hit the gym twice a week, and probably more important to warm up before and stretch afterward. Before a round, dynamic stretching is essential to warm up. Do not static stretch before a round (unless, perhaps, you take Yoga). Static stretching does not generally warm muscles. Warm muscles, tendons, and ligaments are what you need to stretch, and this is what dynamic stretching does. The Disc Golf Strong site has good dynamic routines. Afterward don’t do dynamic stretching. This is the time for static stretching to stretch out those warm tired muscles, but don’t wait more than 10 minutes after you play, you’ll tighten up as you cool down! Another way to improve flexibility is to practice Yoga. Yoga helps with muscle tone and the improved flexibility is more important than weight lifting alone.

Hi, I just wanted to add a note on the blizzard plastic. It is possible to get it in weights so light, that they do actually fly easy like some of the lighter or more understable/flippy/easy turning DX plastic. In particular, I recently found in a used bin for $5 a blizzard champion Destroyer at a mere 131 grams of weight. That’s so light that it actually floats very well in water, even when fully submerged by hand. It takes almost zero effort to throw, but goes as far for me as much heavier discs which require more effort. The trade-off is that it’s more susceptible to the influence of the wind, be it positive or negative. The advantage over baseline/DX plastic is that it’s more sturdy, and so will not get chewed up on the edges so quickly and so badly, and therefore it will retain consistent flight characteristics for longer. It also floats, as mentioned. Finally, in my experience, having such a high speed and ordinarily over-stable (hard fade) disc in such a light weight seems to provide a really nice and straight flight over a surpassingly long distance, whereas my beloved mambas have a far more curvy path to get there. Now, your mileage may vary, and innova is known for having a lot of variance in their runs of the same disc products. However, if you can find a destroyer that weighs less than 140g, maybe consider giving it a shot, especially the closer you get to 130g. It really does feel like a bit of magic throwing it, like throwing a hard puff of air, and watching it soar. I parked and birdied a 340ft par 3 hole today with it that I’ve never birdied before in the 14 months I’ve been playing, having played this course many dozens of times.

    • @NickArnette
      @NickArnette  Год назад +1

Wow, didn't know they made Destroyers so light. That's awesome. A friend of mine throws Mambas in the 130s and gets a lot of distance out of them. I might try flicking my Blizzard Beast and see if I can get a good flight out it...especially if it might float!! I've been working on my forehand. It seems to be making up for my low arm speed. At this point, I'm getting about the same distance with my forehand and backhand. Nice chatting!! Appreciate your comments!

So good to see a video aimed at seniors. I'm 65 and have a course across the street from my house so I get out quite a bit. The problem here in Eastern Ontario is that Canadian Disc sellers can't or are hesitant to order light weight discs. When they do manage to get some in those few are snapped up quickly. Thank you for this video. I've been looking all over for disc golf videos for old guys. I'm 71 and have been playing for about one and a half years. My favorites are DX Mamba, Opto Air Diamond, Westside Underworld in VIP Air plastic, DX Tee Bird. For sharp left turns and wind I like the DX Eagle and DX Wraith. Understable is DX Sidewinder. My favorite straight mids are Wombat3 and Mako3, overstable is Roc3, understable is Discraft Stratus and Lat 64 Pearl. Thanks again, and keep them coming!!!

I am just getting back into the sport after several years at a job that kept me away from home a lot. As I was going through my stash of old discs, I came across a Discraft Heat in base plastic. It flies pretty well for my slower arm speed. I liked it so much that I just one in ESP FLX plastic. This one is real nice! You are so right about the different plastics all flying differently. To me, it seems like the more flexible plastics (Innova G-star, Discraft ESP FLX) are a bit less overstable and go farther for slower release speeds.
My other favorite disc is the Innova Mamba which I opted for in G-star plastic. Thanks for the video.

Hey Nick good stuff from the heart. Don’t forget the impact that the wind can have on your discs. A lot of the discs you like when it’s windy are higher speed discs. You may be throwing into a headwind which is typically a time when you want to disc up to a faster disc. If it’s a tail wind you typically want to disc down.
What a great ambassador to the sport. Well done sir!

All your suggestions are great! Lightweight, understable, base plastics, drivers under about a 9 speed..
What you shouldn't be selling yourself short on, and your friend, for that matter, is your arm speed and technique right now. When you learn how to throw with your body instead of just your arm and throw flat instead of way up in the air, those discs with fly very understable compared to how they fly for you now. It doesn't matter how fast you throw, if you throw nose-up and too high, everything will fade out quickly.

  • @JD-qd2kx

I'm a skinny middle aged guy who has a low arm speed, and primarily drive forehand as my farthest backhands are only middle ranged (ie 150 feet top speed). I've been trying to up my arm speed and accuracy, And have found a few things.
    Maybe they will help!
All discs: I am finding more and more diameter of the disc plays a big part in my throws and putts. There are many specific diameter discs, but I'll group them as they usually fit as small (Shark, Leopard, Aviar) and large (innova Mako3, Guard, Discraft Comet). Usually hand size plays a part here, and the larger diameter feel more like tossing a frisbee.
Putters: I find there are two type of putters. Deep (like the Innova Aviar and Dynamic Discs Guard) and Shallow (like the Latitude 64 Pure or Dynamic Discs Deputy). Depending on your finger size, I find one works better than the other.
Midrange: I find that midrange are almost easier to throw than putters. I originally started only with midrange (a decade occasional play), but for two years now have practiced with putters.
I still find it is so much easier to get a bit of distance with a midrange, and find I'm slowly going back to just tossing them as they seem to be the middle ground
Drivers: no need to ever go above 7 speed, as they really won't fly as intended. The pros need the large 'wing' on a disc. We however, do not.

At my age of (redacted!!!), I stopped trying to twist/spin throw anything... I found myself getting injured trying to learn something without actual guidance. SO...
I quit trying to force my body and focused on purely snapping my release out of my hand, off my fingers. Once I get that, I'll get back to trying to get that form without breaking myself.
(I already torqued my knee 180 degrees trying to plant/spin... so I'm paranoid of more injury)
Innova Mako 3 is a real straight flyer for me. I have it in DX and Champion plastic. Like them both.
And good point about premium plastics... They turn more than base plastic... I just learned that a few weeks before watching your video.
I like my putters in base plastic.. they're easier to grip and shoot with.

There are 4 numbers on a disc speed/glide/fade/turn. The biggest thing I tell people is fade and turn can be affected by plastic and weight. DX(less stable) - star(mid) - champion(more). Weight 145g(less) - 165(mid) - 175(more). The faster you throw a disc the less stable it becomes... So if you throw less than 250 leapords/mambas and lighter discs with high fade are going to be your friend. I am almost 50 and I throw about 300.. I use things like Valkyrie, Wraith, or a light destroyer. but if I threw 350-400 these would be very under stable and they are going to use heavier, faster and better plastics to help with stability. You are spot on in your assessment, but disc choice depends on arm speed and how far you are throwing the disc.. It doesn't mean you don't use your old discs anymore, for instance, I still use my sidewider, but instead of straight tunnel shot, it is a turn over shot for me now. It will just fade out and not really offer much resistance on the turn back. The best thing you can do, is just ask people to let you throw a disc they have, see what it does in your hands.. I have debates with a buddy all the time, we have the same discs but we use them for completely different things. He throws much further than me, so he might use a disc for a straight shot and I might use it as a very overstable disc to throw into the wind.

Don’t need a lot of arm speed and they will glide a long way!! I do have a destroyer in my bag. 175 gm. That is used for going around corners or trees because with my slow arm speed it bends corners very easy! So higher speed discs can be used by older people but for different reasons! Keep discing!!

Great video! I totally agree; not enough good info out there for us "Grandmasters". I've been playing for 10 years and am turning 65. Had both knees replaced but absolutely love playing and get out there as often as I can. You gave a good choice for discs. What I would say is also look at and understand exactly what the flight mean. Use them as a guide; I go for a bit understable, high glide and a little fade at the end. Weight is a factor as well. The young guys can throw max weight but I'll leave it up t them to do it. After years of trial and error I came up with a decent combo for myself and they are all over the map. Drivers/fairways are Blizzard Beast 136g, Mamba 148g, Mamba 139g, Jade at 152g, Sidewinder at 153g, Envy at 154g. Mids are Mako 3, Foxbat and Buzz...all right around 160g. Putters are the Glitch for long putts, Ion for inside the circle. Some of my discs may overlap a little but all behave differently in the wind so I can adjust if need be.

My disc recommendation- Innova Lynx. (^_^)
It's the world record holder for MTA. Sadly, it's NLA from Innova. Sometimes found in good condition and for sale by private 3'rd parties. Designed and made by Innova in the 1990's when Disc Golf wasn't dead but was on life support because folks just didn't want to play the game/sport because the courses had been e l o n g a t e d so much people could no longer use a plain Frisbee and the only discs players could use had to be thrown so HARD regular people just bailed....
I've got two of them in throw-able weights of 167 gm. I only throw the ones I have on the one totally grass covered course here in Tucson. No X-step...just one step-spin-and-throw. 300 feet for me and even "beginners" get over 250 feet without throwing it like you're MAD at something/somebody. Bystanders react with oohs and aaahhhs after seeing it fly so far after an almost effortless throw. It just STAYS in the air cuz that's what it was/is designed to do. (^_^)
Sadly, there's always some PDGA member who sees the flight and then comes up to congratulate me on such a fine throw/flight. Then he says in a condescending voice, "This is a disc Golf course....It's made for Disc Golf Discs....not for Frisbees." Then I show him the disc- Innova Stamp on one side and then I turn it over to show PDGA approved in raised letters on the underside. That's when they get enraged and I decide to leave the course for that day. (_Oo)
On the other courses here in Tucson there's so much sand, rocks, and disc destroying surfaces/objects I won't even bring the Lynx. Instead I bring and throw the Aerobie Sprint (The world's Best Flying Ring) for shots 275 ft or less. Above that distance I use the Aerobie Pro.
Note: Beginners are constantly urged by others or themselves to throw f a r t h e r . But the only way to get that extra distance is to throw HARDER. Very inadvisable to do so. While throwing a Frisbee requires using your ARM (muscles, tendons) which can and does get sore/painful if overexerted...throwing these new "distance discs" (smaller/heavier) requires using techniques that exert the force(s) on bones, ligaments, and cartilage. They do NOT have pain receptors and so you won't know they're about to give way beforehand.
There'll just be a perceived "POP" during your throw and then you'd better be able to afford the expensive surgery to "try-to-repair-the-damage-as-best-as-possible" and the recovery time/expenses.
    HTH. (^_^)

I'm not getting any better, but I don't want to injure myself so I can't play anymore. I have tennis elbow now...doing PT to see if I can get rid of it.

One thing I'll add about the base plastics. Yes, they are less expensive. In my experience, they beat in quite easily and the flight of some base plastics can change noticeably from one round to the next, possibly even within the same round.
I was throwing Innova Valkyries in base (DX) plastic for a while. Those discs worked great for me but they'd all reach a point where it became a challenge to NOT have them turn over on me with every drive. Therefore I only used each disc for a relatively brief time before retiring it. Eventually I picked up a couple light weight Valkyries in Star or GStar plastic. I've had those around for a while now.

Good video. Definitely covered a lot of discs I’ve never heard of.
The Beast was the first disc I could get to turn over and glide for consistent distance. I have taught several people how to drive for the first time and it’s my go to. Something about it makes it easy on beginners…
I tore my rotator cuff, had surgery and now I have to work with less arm speed.
Thank you for this informative video. I’m gonna have to try to get used to throwing discs that are less than 170g.

I’m 46, but I’m just starting out and have a bad shoulder, so I have some thoughts on great beginner discs for slower arms.
MVP Glitch - this thing is a the closest thing to chucking a frisbee in disc golf. Tons of glide and it is a one speed. It also gives great feedback on release angles.
Latitude 64 River - this thing has seven glide on a fairway driver and flies really straight without loads of arm speed. In Opto or Opto Air plastic, it will feel great and is very durable (I prefer Opto).

    • @NickArnette
      @NickArnette  5 месяцев назад

Yes, I love the Glitch for exactly that reason, it flies like a Frisbee. If you're throwing the River well, your arm speed and form is probably pretty good. I have an Opto River. I reviewed it: ruclips.net/video/LT6w7dT7wlc/видео.htmlsi=eD9cduckGoOSI0YA. If you like the River. Try a Lat 64 Opto Maul (super hard to find). It's similar to the River but easier to throw. Bought my first Innova discs in 1985, thrown Innova ever since. I took an almost 20 year absence from the game when raising a family, work, and extensive travel, then got back into it 5 years ago when I retired. Now at 70 years old I found I had lost arm speed so I concentrated on accuracy, particularly with upshots and putting. My go-to driver is an Innova DX Valkyrie, usually in max weight. I have trouble with premium plastics as they are too over-stable for me. I carry at least 5 Valkyries in varying weights and for the most part I putt with them also. I have found that in the 170+ weight class I have been just as successful with speed 7 and 8 drivers as well and I have found good application with a 142g Star Beast. I play weekly with the local club (SW Florida) and have enjoyed the courses here very much (no more playing in the snow in Boise).

Nick, great to see this video! Kudos. I am 69 years of age and found this sport about a year ago. I threw a handful of times last summer, but then hurt my throwing arm and had to lay off for a few months. But I've been getting out to the park to practice about 5 times a week since the first of this year, and while increased skill has been incremental and slow, I've been noticing an improvement in both distance and accuracy.
I discovered lighter weight discs recently and agree about the Diamond and the Jade. The Jade (158 gms) in particular throws straight as an arrow, and is as reliable as my Judge putters in terms of accuracy. I'm managing to get throws on it around 250'.
Another light weight disc that I throw quite well is the Prodigy Air D4 (154 gms). This is an understable distance driver with numbers of 13/6/-3/2. I've learned to put this on a hyzer flip and have fairly consistent straight flights up to 300'.
I've just recently acquired a lightweight Wraith, but have yet to spend enough time with it.
One thing at which I absolutely suck is forehands. I am so frustrated about it, as I have always been a fairly gifted athlete, but somehow cannot find the correct mechanics for it.
Thanks again for doing this video!!!
