  • Are Lighter Discs Better? | Testing the Effects of Different Disc Weights
Disc weight is a topic that is often discussed in the disc golf world as an important factor when choosing the right disc for you to help ensure you get maximum distance and accuracy. But truthfully, we were curious to know…. how important is it REALLY?
Are there substantial differences in flight if you increase or decrease the weight by a few grams, or even as much as 10 to 20? And how do you go about finding the right weighted disc for YOUR game?
Well, we here at JustDisc were very curious about the importance of this factor, so we decided to test the effects of 1 mold in different weights. And honestly, the results were surprising and not exactly what we expected!

The lighter disc's help me a lot, mainly because I have limited arm speed, finding the best weight for your arm speed is essential for control and distance potential, if your max distance is 250 embrace it & dial it in, accuracy always wins.

As an older disc golfer (51 - who started at 49) most content seems to be aimed at younger, more athletic people.

Been disc golfing a few months. I'm 65, but better late than never. Getting a lot of great online content to bring my game up. Starting to get better distance and accuracy. I probably need more experience with disc selection, based on the specific the requirements of the shots. After watching the video today, I should probably buy an understable disc. Thank for the video!

Not a problem Rick, glad you got something out of it!
Honestly, pick up a Latitude 64 River or Innova Leopard3 in a weight between 160 to 165g. They are both great stable distance drivers that will help you learn the game a bit easier over time. And if you want something faster with your current skill level and experience, go with the Innova Mamba or Innova Mystere 👍 Just make sure they aren’t too heavy

Thanks for the video! As a 48 year old, 25 year regular disc golfer, this is affirming and helpful! I spent 2023 lowering my average disc weight from 173g down to 168g. It's made a considerable difference in control, distance, and consistency. I also don't feel like I'm working as hard to move this weight class. Always an ongoing experiement.. Happy Throwing all!!

As a returning (and much older) player, I really appreciate content on the ‘mental’ side of disc golf - applying the principles of specific characteristics (expected flight shape, effect of wind, altitude, humidity and temperature, etc.) to specific situations on the course. Some of that can be picked up by watching pros in various conditions and eventually you can discern the patterns, but a scientific or empirical review is extremely useful in figuring out how to apply those concepts to my game. Thanks for the content - subscribed!

Learning about weights has really helped me get more distance. I went out and found the Latitude 64 Dimond in opto plastic for that reason and I can throw it as far as the "heavy hitters" in our little group

  • @VyCharles
    @VyCharles 2 года назад +3

Wow, so much great information. I’ve been eyeing the river for quite some time, and thought if I went lighter, based on the assumption that lighter is farther, it actually is too understable in my drives and my high speed turns seemed more like -2 or -3. I now understand why having heavier discs would be beneficial for me. I like your disk selections, and educationalist videos, and the videos on the types of discs one should have in their bag.

As a new disc golfer(started playing in May of 2021 and have been obsessed ever since) having videos just like this one have been extremely helpful. Being able to see some data behind the differences in characteristics for each disc(such as which weight to choose, speed ratings, over stable, under stable, etc.) and how they would be applicable in a general sense really help me wrap my head around how to make future purchases that can be best to fit my style of playing. I understand that there is no "one size fits all" in disc golf, which is part of what makes it so difficult interpreting all the variations that come along with different discs and their purposes. This video was extremely interesting and helpful! Thank you!

I would love to see a video on the best ways to optimize field work and putting. Also maybe if you could add a follow flight to some of your throws would help me keep track of the entire flight of the disc. Great video and editing as usual, thanks

I think the esthetics of this vid were the best so far. The studio with the Rivers all displayes and lighted? Magic.
As for content, I think you are killing it. The River is a prime choice, as it has appeal for all skill levels.

Hey! Another great video guys. You really help make understanding what is going to happen a lot easier.
    1. Future Content: More of the same stuff. Your tutorials and reviews are just great... But I know that isnt what you want to hear. So I will add it would be fun to see you do course reviews where you play rounds with friends and family. You did one of these recently and I really enjoyed it.
    2. My favorite videos? Disc weight(this one), Plastic Type Base VS. Premium, Disc stability, You had a great video(maybe it was just social media post) about wind and how it impacts discs... but I cant find it... oh and your terminology video. You really condense "What is disc golf" into easy and manageable bites. I love it.

Great video and I think one of the most important factors you mentioned is supposed disc flight for each particular disc. I throw about 375ft on average and have 175g Trespasses that I can get a full S flight out of. However, I also have a 162g Star Wraith that I can’t get any turn out of. So to get the supposed flight I either need to go lighter or break the disc in more. I do throw some lightweight discs like the Sapphire, Jade, and Air Sheriff and.they bomb and get full flights. I think your distance results would have been different if you picked a more stable disc to test. Most of the guys I play with never get a full flight out of their fairway or distance drivers because they throw max weight discs that they can’t get up to speed. Love the channel and watch all your videos.

I actually found this video to be one of the most helpful. You read about weight vs distance a lot. Not much about accuracy, so this was great. Also, it would be quite an investment (and next to impossible to find) to buy 8 discs in varying weights of the same mold and plastic.

I just started playing disc golf earlier this year and this is the first channel I subscribed to. I would like to hear your thoughts on playing in tournaments - how you approach the tourney, strategy for different types of holes, a "typical" day at a tourney, etc. The videos I would like to see in the future are how to practice, how to progress from beginner to amateur tourney player and beyond and any instructional videos that help you get from point A to point B. Like Canada, I live in Chicago and getting time to play at a course is limited now as it is getting into winter and along with bad weather, it is dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home. So what can we do in the winter to stay sharp or get better? Thanks!

  • @skeller61

Thanks for adding this experiment to the mix. I'm 60, and my average decent distance is 280' with a 158g understable driver, such as the Mamba or Ballista. When I throw, the heavier the weight, it slows my speed down too much to maintain distance or flight path (the higher the weight, the more it dumps left). One helpful video regarding arm speed and distance using the same disc was done by Simon Lizotte. For approach shots and putters, I use close to max weight midranges and putters, as you suggest.
I would love to be able to throw heavier discs, but until then, my speed dictates a lighter disc to get the speed I need.
Thanks a lot for your video!
