So glad I found your channel. I'm 65 and just getting started with disc golf. I hesitated for a while because I was seeing all kinds of videos for young players and thought this might not be for me. Now I know us old dudes can enjoy disc golf, too!
Glad you found my channel. Us old dudes need to stick together!! We can have just as much fun out there as the younger dudes....maybe even more! Boomers rock!
Not an old timer yet... only 35, but I have chronic shoulder injuries from years of college football. Two discs I have been loving lately are the new kastaplast Stig in K1 (similar to the leopard but way more reliable and the K1 plastic feels super premium) and the MVP Spin in R2 plastic (throwing putter for me). Both are straight to understable and great for my low arm speed. I can launch these on an effortless straight line and not worry about blowing my shoulder out... again haha. Also I am loving your content keep up the great work. It's nice to see a person not just talking about max distance bomber discs and I think this content is really filling a void.
I threw my Cobra today for the first time in over a year. I couldn't believe how straight it was! Great disc!! Haven't thrown an Archangel. I'm sure it's awesome!
Low arm speed guy here, been playing roughly a year, max distance is about 220'. I bought the Innova DX starter set & that's all I still throw (DX Leopard, DX Shark, DX Aviar) all are 145g or 146g - they are really good discs. Highly recommend these discs to anyone.
You can't go wrong with the starter pack. One of my friends who is pretty good still throws his Shark from the starter pack. I have purchased several starter packs as gifts to get my friends started. Glad you're enjoying them!!
I'm 66 and have been playing for about a year. Everything I throw seems to go about the same distance. I'm mainly throwing three discs for different shot shapes: a 178g Comet (straight), a 175g Sol (hyzer) and a 155g Sol (anhyzer). All have a speed of four. For me, faster speed discs still go about the same distance, but not as straight or controllable. I use an 180g Condor for approach shots. Putter is a Ringer GT. Love this type of content. Keep up the good work.
Wow, you're throwing some heavy stuff. Yeah, it's crazy how different discs and different flights often end up going about the same distance. Thanks so much for sharing. Some people prefer the heavier discs and that's awesome if they are easy for them to throw. A friend gave me a Westside Underworld in 176g and I can actually throw it. I was really surprised. It was in base plastic.
@@NickArnette You should try the Comet and the Sol (both speed 4). Very Frisbee-like. I've tried a lot of light stuff. Great as long as it's not windy. 150g Mamba is awesome. I also like 150g Blizzard Katana and 160g Roadrunner. Diamond is also great.
I discovered this wonderful sport nearly 3 years ago at the age of 68 (it'll be 3 years this September). This summer I'll turn 71 and I'm having the time of my life! My go-to discs have been the glidey, understable ones mostly but I have been having more and more success with stable to overstable discs now that my skill level and technique have been improving. My bag basically has drivers in the 150g class, mids in the 160g class, and putters in the 170g class. I'm throwing putters and approach discs more and more, even for some longer throws, but the fairways and slower distance drivers are still my main ones off the tee.
Great point! Yeah, maybe I was trying too hard with it. I've had that same issue with some of my other discs. Maybe I shouldn't have given my River away so soon! Haha!!
Also 53, and also a "rookie" having played for less than a year. But I did come from a frisbee background, not that it matters, but my forehand is far better than backhand. While I've tried other brands, I'm an MVP/Axiom guy. Fav discs: Fission Insanity at 149g, Fission Crave 162g (I have another that is in the mid 150s, but don't know where my sons' put it), a Fission Hex, also missing....grrr 🤔, that is in the 155 range, 1 Fission Envy - 168g and a Cosmic Neutron Envy at 172g. I do have several more discs, all but the Envy are Fission plastic. DG is a lot of fun, got my 66 year old brother into it, too. He likes heavier discs, though. I outthrow him, but not by a ton. Glad you started this channel and your content is great. Keep it up!
Hi Nick. Thanks for another great video. I am 60 and just started to play disc golf (I am hooked). I really like the Innova Aviar (Champion) putt & approach 166g. Also recommend reading: The Definitive Guide To Disc Golf. Cheers!
I'm glad the Latitude 64 Bolt made the list. It's a fast disc but so understable that us slower arms can make great use of it. I have the gold plastic which is awesome. However, I thought it was gone for good so I purchased another in Opto, but haven't tried that yet. Some kind golfer found my original Bolt and gave me a call so I can soon compare the two discs.
Isn't it cool when someone gives you a disc! That's how I found out about the Diamond. I found a guy's disc and he gave me the Diamond. It really helped out my game. Glad you found the Bolt. Hope I can throw one sometime!! So many great discs out there!
Loved this, right on. I’m an old dude 67 but have only been playing for 45 years. All the disc you recommend is what I throw. All light weight 155-135. Go to driver is a 145 beast, dx plastic of course. Can not beat a leopard for an approach shot. And my old xd putter. Your disc choice were great for us boomers
That's awesome! I love the Beast in DX plastic, not so much in the Champion plastic though. Stick with the DX in the Beast. Glad you're getting good use out of the Leopard as well. The Good think about those discs is that they are easy to replace if you lose them or they get too beat up. Keep havin' fun out there!
Thanks for directing me to Robbie C. He has a great channel. I am about to turn 76 and started disc golf three weeks ago. Love at first throw. I really wish that I could find an in person disc golf instructor. My search has come up empty so far. Not sure that I want to do the online video at my age. Keep your videos coming, they are right up my alley.
Glad you like Robbie C! In a future episode, I will also highlight a few other RUclips DG instructor channels. I like Robbie C the best, though! He's cool!!
Just wanted to say, YES, finally a channel for us older disk golfers. I am 58 and struggle to get the disk farther than 200 feet. I watch Robbie C and his channel is outstanding but sometimes I feel a bit left out due to my age and arm strength as far as recommended disks go. Love the list you compiled! I was really interested in the SUNA SPORTS disks and wanted to let you know I found a place that has them in stock. It's Marshall Street Disk Golf. I just.ordered 6 different SUNA models. Can't wait to check them out. And can't wait for your next video! Keep it up and thanks for putting out content for us slightly older disk golfers.
Thanks for letting me know about where you found the Suna discs. Please let me know how they work out for you! Much appreciated!! Glad you like the channel!! I really appreciate your support!!
@@NickArnetteSorry it took so long to get back to you. I absolutely LOVE the SUNA disks! Lightweight and very easy to throw. They bumped a couple of other disks out of my bag. Also they are still in stock and on sale at Marshall. I might have to get a few more!
@@garyjohnson65 thank you so much for the update on Suns Discs! Hopefully I can get my hands on a few to try them out. Glad to hear they are pretty good!
Thanks for the great video, we need more content for us seniors who aren't throwing 450' and can't handle high speed drivers. I'm 61 and I've been playing a little over a year. A can definitely recommend the Kraken. It was the first disc I could throw strait over 200'. I also like the RPM Piwakawaka it's considered a mid but I used it off the tee's for quite a while. I'm now really enjoying the Diamond, it goes straight and up to 250' for me, it's a great light weight fairway driver. I'm looking forward to trying the Jade next.
I'm glad you found some discs you like and can throw well. 250' is a great throw! Wow!! If you're throwing the Diamond really well I think you'll enjoy the Jade, too! Be sure and get it in a light weight. Have fun ou there!
i'll be 65 in January and have been playing 42 yrs. Tip #1 i suggest using putters from 165-172 as they seem to catch a lot better than really lightwieght versions. Tip#2 i use drivers in the 155 - 161 grams. i find a disc that works for me and carry a really beat in and a newish one of the same weight. Tip#3 i carry a 150 gram Aviar every round at every course i play because they fly as close to a Frisbee type disc as anything i have ever used. it is also a great disc to play a little catch and putt back and forth as a low impact warm up with a friend before a round. i'm glad to see what you are doing here and good luck! {
I like your suggestions for weights. Pretty good idea about a 150 Aviar!! Playing 42 years. That is super cool!!! You must be REALLY good!!! What discs are you throwing? Thanks a million for your comments!
@@NickArnette i have never been really good overall but i was (in the 90's) considered one of the best putters in my part of the country. i am a forhand dominant player so i prefer wide rimmed drivers such as Nukes around 158 and found a run of Star Bosses @ 156 that are perfect for me. learning to throw a disc correctly is FAR more important than any particular mold. the disc should fly flat or slighlty nose down and will fly farther and straighter when done correctly. it is easier to learn with a mid range or putter before even trying any kind of fast driver.
@@2na-phish Wow, what an honor to be communicating with you! What was the key to good putting? I really like what you have to say regarding starting with a mid-range or putter. Great advice!!
@@NickArnette the key to good putting is to buy a basket and use it. pick a putter mold that feels good in your hand and stick with it. trying too many different discs is a big mistake i see a lot of people making. i'm probably a better teacher than a player so the honor is all mine. Good luck!
I have the Innova starter pack (having a blast golfing multiple times per week for exercise lately) and just ordered the Diamond, the River, Mako3, Judge, Mamba, Underworld, Sidewinder, and a little bag to carry them. A lot of them arrive tomorrow, can’t wait! Thank you for your videos which helped me make a few of the pics.
Wow, you have some great discs coming your way, my friend!! You're gonna' be all set. You might want to add a Jade or have someone get you one for Christmas or your birthday!! Have fun!!
I am 53 and started 3 years ago. I found Trilogy (Lat64, DD, and Westside) is great because most discs have incredible glide and do better with smooth throws instead of hard throws. My recommendations: Putters - Pure (straight and glidey) 3/3/-1/1 Harp (everyone needs an overstable approach disc) 4/3/0/3 Mids - Fuse (straight to understable and super glidey) 5/6/-1/0 Warship (straight, glidey with a slightly overstable finish) 5/6/0/1 Fairway - Underworld (understable, seven speed Diamond) 7/6/-3/1 River (straight) 7/7/-1/1 Explorer (overstable) 7/5/0/2 Escape or Saint (distance driver for senior disc golfers) 9/5/-1/2 Those in lighter weight or Air plastic should work on any course. In truth, it is a slow, well timed, smooth throw that gets distance of any kind. Not necessarily the disc itself. I don't feel a senior DGer should be throwing faster than a 9 speed. Higher speed discs will actually net you less distance. Plus, it is all in the upshot and putting.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share some of your favorite discs! You're right about the smooth throw getting the distance and staying at a 9-speed or under. There are rare exceptions such as the Mamba and a Wraith for windy days. I can get a decent flick out of a Tern once in a while but my forehand is really inconsistent.
I'm 62 and just started playing again about 4 months ago, first started playing about 15 years ago. Here's a few I would recommend that you don't have on the list. Discraft Archer, Innova Roc, IT, Leopard, Leopard 3, Sidewinder. The Discraft Sol is not a putter.
Yes, I fixed my error about the Sol. So sorry. It will be corrected in the new list I will probably post up tomorrow. I waiting to see if I made any other errors. Thanks!!
As for drivers that I can throw and actually get some distance out of. My go to when I want to go far is my Innova Mamba. It was understable to start out with and after a while it gets even more so. I got to watch out for headwinds tho. But for me, put a little hyzer on it into a little headwind and the thing flies forever. My other, slower straight flying disc that I really love and throw a LOT is my Westside Discs Underworld. For me that flies straight for 200 feet before it starts to curve. Another favorite is the Dynamic Discs Witness. I don't know if they make it anymore but its another understable disc that thrown slower goes straight forever.
I threw an Underworld for the first time this week. It was 176. A friend gave it too me. Even at that heavy of a weight, I was able to get a great flight out of it! You'll see me throwing it in an upcoming video.
I have an F5. I actually threw it today! I had it out of my bag for quite a while, but now it's worked its way back into my bag! It was too stable for my arm but now it seems OK...especially with forehand shots.
Westside discs Warship. Can’t recommend it enough. It’s a midrange 5, 6, 0, 1 but has a long straight hang time. Super easy to throw great utility disc.
It just makes me smile to see a fellow old dude that loves disc golf who has made a RUclips page and people are responding. 😀 I'm not sure what you are thinking of when you say east to throw. I get it for drivers but sometimes you need to hook around a tree so you want a disc that is a real meat hook. I had a Harp just for that, a real flying brick. But when you needed something to really curve, or not go too far, that was the disc to throw. I gave it to my son. I wish I still had it, but. Well, it's a dad thing.
Yeah, it's great to know there are quite a few of us old dudes who love disc golf!! Nice of you to give your Harp to your son. You're a great dad. A cool one too, because you're a disc golfer!!! Maybe try a Destroyer to get a strong curve. I've had some crazy good luck sometimes throwing my Mamba as an approach disc!
Just started using the Avenger ss and instantly got 25 ft of distance throw it with hyser. Also The elevation line from Intercepter mid range koi is a putter, the Binx is the driver/ and you must throw with less power. I used only elevation for my first year. My advice is fins a few disc and work them for a year and then the next year add a few more. Do not try to learn 10 disc;s at a time start with 3 at a time like most starter packs. I suggest elevation discs for all begiiners Plus if you throw one poorly if it hits something it does not get beat is My elevations disc;s fly exactly the same as when I bought them. It does feel wierd when you first start throwing them but they are consistent. My arm speed is slow I only throw stand still because I do not want to lose my balance and fall. I can throw up to 300 ft, and that is all you need to par most holes. Thanks for the channel.
So many great things in your comments!! I hope a lot of people read what you have to say. I'm so glad you brought up stand-still throwing. There's no shame in it. I've seen videos where they show there's not a huge difference between stand-still and run-up for the average player. Maybe I'll do that in a future episode. Elevation discs. They are super cool. I don't have any yet but want to try one of their rubbery putters!!
Innova distance drivers: roadrunner, sidewinder, mamba. General rule for I move plastic: more basic (dx) plastic will become more understandable than the other more premium plastics
I think the slower and understable discs you use, the higher the weight and more premium plastic you can use. That said, if you are using more stable to overstable drivers, you can reduce weight and switch to midgrade and base plastics. But I caution people from using faster discs like 9 speed and above, if they can't throw more than 300 feet. One disc I highly recommend for older and lower speed disc golfers is a 175g Innova Leopard ( 6 5 -2 1 ) in Star plastic. They're one of the most mass-produced discs made, so you can get a replacement easier than most, and one of the most popular fairway drivers on the planet. For the first 3-4 years of me playing, this was my primary driver, and in my hands I threw it mostly in the 220' to 260' range. Now that I can throw a little farther, I mostly use 7-9 speed discs, but I still bag that same Leopard right now, as my understable turning driver. But it's dead straight at lower speeds, and can pull double duty as a midrange for some shots.
Wow, @NickCarroll!! What an honor to have you here!! I only recently found out about your channel and love your teaching style. I have an upcoming video where I'll be recommending great instructional disc golf channels and I'm certainly going to mention you!! Thanks for posting here and thanks for your super helpful comments. I have a G-Star Leopard in 165g. I use it occasionally. You make a great point that it's good to love discs that are easy to find in case you lose them and have to buy another!
All good advice. For older or low arm speeds generally go understable and lighter weight. As you have found you outgrow these discs as your form improves. So nothing wrong with overstable discs thrown smooth. As you are not going for distance with overstable they have a different flight with a stronger fade. Classic example is a gentle flick approach with a Zone. I would give up on high speed discs you can almost certainly throw a putter or a midrange just as far. I am approaching your age and throw my Proxy and Luna (putters) just as far as younger friends who throw drivers. And my form is better and less injury prone. Can't keep up with the Open players no matter what but not trying to. I suggest putter only rounds to those with low arm speeds.
I think there is a lot of truth in what you say. My very best drives have been with my 7-speed Diamond. Also using low-speed discs to drive takes less arm speed and is easier on the arm. Thanks for sharing!!
Good Luck Nick. (^_^) I'll check back in a couple of years to see how this played out. In the meantime, please try to remember that while they still call it "Disc Golf" the courses are set up for "Distance Golf" and the discs recommended for these courses have to be thrown from the tee-pad with techniques (run up, X-Step, etc) borrowed from books that explain "How to throw world record distance". (O_O)
He did! Replied to my comment in his last video. It's great that he's filling an overlooked niche in this sport. That said, there's a lot of older people playing it, so the attention is needed. 🙂
Thanks so much!! I have watched Nick Carroll. He's awesome!! I'm going to put out an episode of some great instructors and will be sure to include him in it.
Thank you for another great video. Looks like you’ve mixed up Defy with Paradox. The Paradox is an understable midrange with flight numbers 5, 4, -4, 0
Also the Discmania Essence is a low arm speed understable 8 speed that was my fist disc and now I throw it. Overstable disc must be thrown annhyser to work most beginers like to throw overstable discs for distance. throw the river anhyser slightly. As this is only my second year so throwing overstable disc's are a lifesaver haha
Latitude 64 Saint in opto air is my farthest flying disc bye 10-20 feet over mamba not only that it’s the straightest discs more predictable then mamba . I’m 64 and started playing 2020 I can throw the Saint 270 . The Jade is close maybe 10 -15 less distance but it has to flex to get the distance the Saint can go that distance on a rope give it a try ,you won’t be sorry !
OK, The Sain Opto Air is on my next order of new discs to try!! If it can outdo the Jade, that's saying a lot in my book!! Also, thanks for being the first to comment on my newest video!! Much appreciated!!
Thanks so much for putting together this series. I’ve had to trial and error through a lot of discs to find suitable discs. When I found the Lat64 Diamond it changed my game. Lately I’ve been going through a few discs from MVP because it is easy to find light weight discs from them.
I am nearly 60 and 6 months into disc golf, a quick run down of what worked for me, I have a bunch of medical issue arthritis etc and had a terrible time starting out, I could not throw the disc 50 feet for the first couple of weeks, I nearly quit a couple of time because progress was slow, and I could not find a way to throw. 3 months in and Christmas came, everyone bought me discs (70) ish in total, I could not throw any with comfort. I spent an afternoon finding the most comf/easy disc to throw out of them 1 speed 15 speed , dog toy at this point I ddnt care, in my case it was a DX destroyer no idea why but felt good flew straight. So I had an idea, all attempts at following form were a disaster power grip 2 finger grip pivot here spin there following YT videos went terrible. So my idea was , take thought out of it, I bought 9 more Dx destroyers 10 in total 2 stacks of 5, set my bag at 50 feet and threw all 10 in 60 sec standstill 5 in left hand picking up next stack when thrown, this takes all thought out of the process as its a fast one after the other and a lot of repetition. I did this 7 days a week 60 mins a day about 2k throws a week. 3 months later I am up to 180 ft with a max of 311 ft from a standstill. (wind assist) Sorry for the long post, hope it may work for others
Wow, that's a great story!! I really appreciate sharing how you improved your game!! 70 discs for Christmas!!! Man, you have the best friends and family ever!!
I was using the Axiom Envy for putting but went back to the Fierce Pierce 3/4/-2/0. I have 10 of them and go out and putt a couple hundred a day in my yard. I'm banging them in from 30 - 35 feet without a problem. The Fierce is awesome for upshots as well. I use the Yikun Rong 13/5/-3/1 in 162 g. It is easy to flip up from hyzer, especially into the wind. Don't overthrow it though as it will turn into a roller. One of my favorites is the Innova Leopard 6/5/-2/1 in 146 g. This disc is really easy to flip up from hyzer on a nice, easy throw. It has a lot of glide too. I like Axioms, and I have 6 or 7, but they ALL are more stable than their numbers imply! I'm turning 66 this month and just started playing 10 months sgo, and I don't generate a lot of arm speed
@@NickArnette It gets good distance if you don't try to overpower it. Throwing into the wind I have to put a little hyzer on it as it will turn over to the right. I'm right handed btw. It is not good for forehands though
There are a lot of good options listed. Not all will work for each person. See what works for you. I agree that lower weight and speed ratings under 9 is a huge benefit to slower speed arms. Technique is equally important. Watch some videos on backhand, forehand and approach shots and go out and try them. Before a round I practice with 2 or 3 discs and see what is working that day. One time I accidently threw a roller with a Jade and it is now a go to disc in open fairways. Most of all have fun.
Well said, my friend!! Not all will work for each person. I'm hoping everyone realizes that. I will emphasize that in my upcoming videos. Thanks s million for your helpful comment!!
58, playing for 10 years. Jade, mamba and diamond are in my bag, fantastic discs. Check out the under stable pearl (46-40) in both basic prime and opto plastics - permanently in my bag! Just picked up the glitch, it’s great. The warden (2400) is a great fantastic putter, as is my main putter the sensei (3301) - I have the sensei in soft, active and active Premier plastics. My go to mid ranges are Mako 3 in xt pro plastic (5500) & Truth emac (5502) in prime plastic, the Tursas (55-21) has fantastic control. For an over stable driver the wraith (11 5-13) that he mentions is a fantastic disc, but also try the Firebird in gstar (9304) in lower weights - a staple in my bag for wind and utility shots around trees, etc. Also recommend the disc mania, soft line active set for beginners! Fantastic inexpensive quality discs. Thank you for the great video!
Thanks for doing this Nick. This is great. One thing I'm seeing is that many of these discs are not available in lighter weights. I have a meteor that's 170 plus and I'd like to have one much lighter.
Yes, that's so frustrating. Hopefully, other manufacturers will have some crossover discs that make a lighter version, such as MVP Fission plastic, and Dynamic Disc Air.
Hi Nick…Here’s my thoughts on Divergent’s options. They’re so cheap, I tried several. (I’m fairly new, 51, pretty slow arm speed, right handed). Kraken (fairway)- straight with pretty dependable fade in Max-Grip plastic. fade will depend on speed. Worth a look I think. Try Max-value plastic instead if too much…..Leviathan (mid) - Nice under stable mid in Max-Grip. Great if you don’t throw forehand to fly left-to-right…..Lawin (Driver) - This is a cheap discraft Hades. My friend who loves his Hades tried it, and it flies the same. At the edge speedwise for weaker arms……Nuno (putter) - good straight flying beaded putter. Max-grip plastic is too bouncy for putting though. Fine as thrower…..Minotaur (driver) - not recommended. will fade HARD for us weak arms. Could work as a utility disc, or maybe for forehand players……Tiyanak (fairway) - very understable. The max-value plastic was too understable for me (goes hard right and/or rolls on backhand) Worth a look though for slowest /older arms.
I've reached out to Divergent Discs so I could feature them. So far, no reply. I hope they send me some! I'm sure I'll love 'em!! Thanks a million for your comments and suggestions!
@@sjutton99 I really appreciate your encouragement. I'm going to put out another video within a week. The second video hasn't had a lot of interest, but I'll keep going for a while and see what happens.
Looking for lighter discs can be hard. Most big box stores won’t carry lighter discs! If you are close to a smaller disc store. Go talk to them. They can most of the time order you lighter discs! Support the small business man or woman!!!!
Thank you for the videos! Am 64 and started playing a couple months ago. I have a hard time getting my River to fly straight, but my 159g Opto Sapphire is great after a little practice. Just need to be careful not put any hyzer on it or it is really over stable when thrown with a slower arm speed. After moving up from the Innova starter set, the easy to throw Latitudes 64s are now my go to discs. Premium plastic, lighter weight Sapphire, Diamond, and Pearl along with a base plastic Ruby. Have tried some max weight Dynamic Disc putters (Deputy/Judge/Warden) and that will be my next purchase. The heavier weight does not seem to matter on the putters.
You have a pretty fast arm if you can already throw the Sapphire! Wow!! I just started throwing my River again today. Someone suggested I don't try to throw it too hard, and it worked! Give the River another try! Yes, any of those putters will do the job! Welcome to the world of disc golf, my friend!!
Yeah, you should. One of the commenters here mentioned Marshall Street Golf Has them! www.marshallstreetdiscgolf.com/product-category/manufacturers/sune_sports
@Nick Arnette I'm going to try and support my favorite local store first. I currently am throwing a 175g Valkyrie, and I have several Buzzz's that work well for me, but they too are heavier. I've just had it in my head that throwing greater mass = more distance. Should've asked myself, "Well, how far can you throw a bowling ball?" 😄
Beginning set I highly recommend Discmania Soft Active Line Disc Golf Set. Despite the beginner friendly price point and design, this 150 weight class set is designed for wide variety of skill levels starting from beginners. Like their base plastic better than Innova DX. Sensei - putter (3301) Maestro - mid-range (4302) Magician - fairway driver (6402)
Wow, great suggestions!! I'm adding all these to my updated list!! Thanks so much!! Yeah, seems like other manufacturers have better baseline plastic than Innova.
Hello Nick, Thanks for another great video for us old timers. I want you to try the Tee-Bird again in DX plastic at around 150g. I think you will like it for straight to slightly overstable shots. Also the Westside Underworld in VIP Air Plastic is good at around 158g. I use the Berg for short approach shots. I never throw it full power. I like the way it drops out of the air without fear of it sailing away too far. Again thanks, and keep them coming!!!
Hey, thanks! Glad to hear the Berg is actually a usable disc. I can see how that would be helpful to find a disc that will drop for you...especially on a putt. I'm gonna' get me a light DX Tee bird and see what happens!
I'm 47 and not throwing more than about 167 feet, did throw 64 metres once. I just don not have the muscle tone from when I was young...I'm trying to throw with lighter discs as 175 g too heavy.
Thanks for your suggestion. I will be suggesting disc weights in my next video. Basically, I recommend drivers in the 145-159 range, Midrange in the 160 range, and putters in the 165 into the 170s as a rule of thumb. I hope that helps.
@@NickArnette wow. That helps a lot. My drivers are all 169 and higher. I will definitely be trying that. Could be my problem. part of it anyway. Thank you.
@@dyingfromthelying the same thing happened to me. I didn’t know anything about the weight of Disc so I was throwing things that were way too heavy. I think you will see an incredible difference when you start throwing lighter discs. Let me know how it goes. In my next video I will be explaining it in more detail. I hope you will take a look at it. I’m going to be posting it on Friday.
@@dyingfromthelying 250-300 isn't bad at all in my book. Give a light disc a try in base plastic to start with and see what happens. What drivers are you using now?
I have a couple discs from Latitude 64's "Zero Gravity" line - the Zero Gravity Saint, and Zero Gravity Explorer, both 125 grams I think. The ZG Saint is too understable for my arm and will turn and burn unless I put a massive amount of hyzer on it, and it's a difficult disc for me to get a good flight out of. The ZG Explorer, however is awesome. I can put a full rip on it with a little bit of hyzer and it will flip up to flat and go straight and finish with a little bit of fade at the end. It has remarkable torque resistance for being such a light disc. When there's wind I will switch to something heavier like a 165+ gram River, Saint, or Roadrunner.
Thanks for letting me know about the Zero Gravity line. I had not heard of it. I might see if I can pick up a couple. If your arm pretty fast? Wondering if I can only choose one, if I should get the Saint, or the Explorer?
@@NickArnette My arm speed is around 45 mph measured with a Tech Disc, and I almost always get a good flight out of the Explorer (provided there's no wind). The Saint is too understable for me. If your arm speed is around the same as mine, I would say that the Explorer would be your best bet.
I would actually not recommend the Lat64 Sapphire. It was super overstable for me when I was new, and now that I've disced up a bit I use the MVP Octane (which I do NOT recommend for new/older players! I'm 30 and have to really rip it) for the same sorts of shots. I would also not call the MVP Tesla stable. I use it as a very overstable midrange for lay-ups that require very hard fade. I second the Innova Dragon as a great beginner/lower speed disc, but I'd call it understable. Maybe just because I've beaten mine in a bit, but a new one is flying pretty understable for a low-arm-speed friend, too. Great disc. If you're young & new, it'll turn into a roller disc for you as your arm speed improves. Lastly, the Lat64 Diamond. Such a good disc. I've bought three now. Super understable. Perfect for beginners. I don't think I saw the MVP Glitch on that list, but my lower-arm-speed friend loves it. It doesn't fly too far for him, but it always flies dead straight and doesn't punish you for throwing too high. I don’t use it too often, but he uses it all the time.
I'm totally with you on the Sapphire. I could rarely get it to fly properly because of my arm speed. I gave it my friend with a faster arm and it's his #1 driver now. I have a Dragon. I use it near water because it floats!! It was on a list of the worst discs I read once. Can't remember where I saw it, but I think it flies ok and it saves me from losing a disc to the water gods! haha!!
Innova Wombat3 is much more stable than the BUZZ. Innova Viking is my choice over the Valkyrie. EV-7 putters are great throwing putters. All of these are thrown by a 67yr old with slow arm speed
Thoughts on topics. The first thing that comes to my mind is injury. I find I get sore easier and stay sore longer these days. I lost a year by hurting my shoulder and I don't want to have that happen again. It's not a sexy topic but an important one. I wouldn't mind knowing what my fellow older golfers do. Do you stretch, warmup before or after? Exercises? Another one I have wanted to know for years is, just how far should I be able to throw at 65+?! I have a hard time getting past 250 and it drives me nuts. I keep thinking I should be able to get at least 300.
Yes, injury is a great one. Excellent suggestion!! I had a really bad case of tennis elbow last year. I even played left-handed for over six months while it healed. I do a little warming up. I don't do anything after, but I should. I've never seen anyone stretch afterward, but I think it's a great idea!
Hey im a new young disc golfer and I just want to say I really enjoy watching your videos! Not everything applies to me but I still get some take aways.
Thank you so much for your kind words, my friend!! I really appreciate the support!! If you have a fairly fast arm, try out the Lattitude 64 Sapphire. That thing really flies far!!
@@doimaster2924 I have a Glitch and love it. It's really easy to throw. It can be a little touchy at times..but most of the time it glides nice and straight with minimal effort.
The Trespass is too fast and too overstable. The Berg is a easy to throw because of its low speed 1/1/0/2 it has little glide, but designed that way so it stays near the basket when you putt or approach. The MVP Signal is a nice low speed 6/5/-3/1 fairway driver, but you’ve got to get the throwing angle right. The correct flight numbers for the MVP Tesla are 9/5/-1.5/2. Get it in 150g or so in Fission plastic. Still maybe too stable for some. The RPM Pekapeka 9/6/-3/1 is more understable than a Jade but I don’t know how light of a plastic it comes but may go as low as 150g. It is pretty easy to throw as far as a 9 speed goes. It comes in Strata base plastic. The Discraft Passion originally came out in low weights (140-169g I believe) because Paige wanted it that way. Perhaps they are still available in those weights. It’s numbers are 8/5/-1/1. While it is a bit overstable it is less so than a Stalker. Discraft is about bring back it’s lightweight plastic: Z-Lite.
You are no Joe Blow. You are someone who really knows his stuff and knows the game!! Thanks so much for your helpful comments. I hope a lot of people read what you have to say! Thanks so much, Joe!!
you do not need a light weight for these discs and it takes time to figure how to throw them. Light weight only matters if you want 10% more distance for us old guys. I am an old guy and looked for the easiest distance from a stand still.
Thanks so much for your comment. I agree as you get better you can throw heavier discs, but for many of us, including me, there's a limit. I throw a Trruth midrange that's 174 in prime plastic from time to time because it's pretty easy to throw so there are certainly exceptions.
@@NickArnette Trust me with the elevation koi 174 feels like 154 because it is floppy in order to throw these discs well you can not over torque them they must be thrown with our arm speed in mind I have a bad shoulder my throwing arm can not do much more then a flick so I do understand throwing lighter discs but the way I throw the heavier discs fly straighter for me... my point for me. but I feel if I can throw without pain with the elevation discs then it is worth it to let others know. 8 grams is really very little weight difference.
Great topic! I had read about the benefits of lighter discs a while ago but then was surprised to see the results of testing done in this video: ruclips.net/video/81QG5VENqg4/видео.html&lc=UgzBzqqxGFC2UFUHVxJ4AaABAg They did not find that lighter discs went farther than heavier ones and go into the possible reasons why. They recommend not going below 160g, although so far the best results I have had off the tee is with a 157g Diamond in gold plastic. Lat 64 has a diamond packaged in a starter pack with the Ruby and Pearl, I would be curious to know if anyone has used those 2 discs.
Thank you so much for your comment! What I'm trying to accomplish here is to help seniors and low arm-speed players to find discs that they can throw. Heavier discs are often not as easy to throw. The goal is not so much distance as it is to find discs we seniors and low arm-speeders can throw well to create a more enjoyable experience on the course. I'm going to add the Ruby and the Peal to the list of discs. Thanks again for your comment. Much appreciated!!
I have thrown max weight discs and light discs and my experience is that the lighter discs don't go farther for me. I started out with heavier discs and while I buy them a little lighter, I stay above 160g most of the time. I'm 67 and have been playing 5 years or so.
The ruby and pearl are good disks, but especially the pearl! It’s under stable and I can do all sorts of utility throws with it. Power down and you can do lasers accurate shots. I have it in the base and opto plastics.
The Innova Wolf is an old mold, but they're still in production so they're super easy to find and one of the absolute best discs for a player with low arm speed. It was the disc I used to get my first ace and I've bagged one ever since.
Looking for lighter discs can be hard. Most big box stores won’t carry lighter discs! If you are close to a smaller disc store. Go talk to them. They can most of the time order you lighter discs! Support the small business man or woman!!!!
That's a great suggestion. So many times lighter discs are sold out when they do have them. I love the smaller disc stores. The closest one to me is over an hour away. If I'm ever out there, I stop by, though. Love supporting small businesses....especially when it's disc golf related!!
The Stig sounds great! I only saw them available in the 170 range. I wonder if they have lighter versions? Great to see some younger viewers here!!
I am a low arm speed player and have been loving the innova cobra and archangel
@@karlfreitag167 they both sound like great discs! I’m going to check them out to see if I can find a good deal on one! Thanks for the suggestion.
You have the perfect combination of discs! Mine are about the same...except I do long putts with the Glitch which is 142g.
Slow down on the River, it sails. It's about being smooth, not about being strong. Quick rather than yanked. Great glide.
Great point! Yeah, maybe I was trying too hard with it. I've had that same issue with some of my other discs. Maybe I shouldn't have given my River away so soon! Haha!!
I have a heavy, but beat-in River I got from a friend, and I have my longest drive with it (elevated tee with tail wind). Agree with the glide!
Would recommend the Axiom Crave. My favorite disc for distance thus far! 53 year old Rookie.
Lots of people are commenting on the Axiom and MVP line. I'm adding more to my collection!
Keep it up!
I had a neutron Crave from the PDGA that I lost 😞. About 163g. It flew straight with a nice gradual, but dependable fade for my arm.
Hi Nick. Thanks for another great video. I am 60 and just started to play disc golf (I am hooked). I really like the Innova Aviar (Champion) putt & approach 166g. Also recommend reading: The Definitive Guide To Disc Golf. Cheers!
The Aviar is a classic. Tried and true!! Thanks for your positive comment!! Much appreciated!!
Gary I want to encourage you by saying you can get past 200 feet! I'm 67 and I can throw about 230-240. I'm still believing for 300! lol We shall see
@@NickArnetteSorry it took so long to get back to you.
Have fun ou there!
i'll be 65 in January and have been playing 42 yrs.
Tip #1 i suggest using putters from 165-172 as they seem to catch a lot better than really lightwieght versions.
Tip#2 i use drivers in the 155 - 161 grams. i find a disc that works for me and carry a really beat in and a newish one of the same weight.
Tip#3 i carry a 150 gram Aviar every round at every course i play because they fly as close to a Frisbee type disc as anything i have ever used. it is also a great disc to play a little catch and putt back and forth as a low impact warm up with a friend before a round.
i'm glad to see what you are doing here and good luck! {
Good luck!
@@2na-phish Yes, buying too many different discs. Great topic for another video! Thanks so much for your helpful comments, my friend!!
Have fun!!
@@NickArnette thanks for the tip!
I am 53 and started 3 years ago. I found Trilogy (Lat64, DD, and Westside) is great because most discs have incredible glide and do better with smooth throws instead of hard throws. My recommendations:
Putters -
Pure (straight and glidey) 3/3/-1/1
Harp (everyone needs an overstable approach disc) 4/3/0/3
Mids -
Fuse (straight to understable and super glidey) 5/6/-1/0
Warship (straight, glidey with a slightly overstable finish) 5/6/0/1
Fairway -
Underworld (understable, seven speed Diamond) 7/6/-3/1
River (straight) 7/7/-1/1
Explorer (overstable) 7/5/0/2
Escape or Saint (distance driver for senior disc golfers) 9/5/-1/2
Those in lighter weight or Air plastic should work on any course.
Prodigy discs in air spectrum plastic. I've been particularly enjoying the F7 and the F3.
I have an F5. I actually threw it today! I had it out of my bag for quite a while, but now it's worked its way back into my bag! It was too stable for my arm but now it seems OK...especially with forehand shots.
The buzz ss in a light weight would be a good disc for lower arm speed players
Can't go wrong with the Buzzz SS!
Westside discs Warship. Can’t recommend it enough. It’s a midrange 5, 6, 0, 1 but has a long straight hang time. Super easy to throw great utility disc.
I'm going to put the Warship on my list. Sounds like a great one! Do you use it primarily as a mid-range, approach?
It just makes me smile to see a fellow old dude that loves disc golf who has made a RUclips page and people are responding. 😀
I'm not sure what you are thinking of when you say east to throw.
Innova distance drivers: roadrunner,sidewinder, mamba.
General rule for I move plastic: more basic (dx) plastic will become more understandable than the other more premium plastics
I really need to try a Roadrunner. I hear so many good things about it. Yes, I agree with you about the DX plastic going understable more quickly.
I'll check back in a couple of years to see how this played out.
Wish me luck!! Best to you as well!!
I found a MVP Virus and was surprised how well it flew sidearm. I am over 70, a senior low arm speed geezer.
MVP has so many great discs!! I'm adding the Virus to my updated list. Thanks so much for sharing!!
The Fuse and Compass combo is a good one,Easy throwers
Good to know!! Thanks! I added them to the list.
Try to get a hold of "Nick Carroll Disc Golf" He is a little older and seems to have a good understanding for his arm speed and play.
Thanks, for letting me know, my friend. Sorry for the mix up.
@@captainblacktoe1328 Yes, I'm really liking the MVP and Axiom discs in light weights. Thanks for your encouraging comments!!
Yikun Rong. 13 speed. Wow, sounds cool. Does it throw like a 13-speed? 100 putts a day!! That's super awesome!! Great job!!!
@@NickArnette It gets good distance if you don't try to overpower it. Throwing into the wind I have to put a little hyzer on it as it will turn over to the right. I'm right handed btw. It is not good for forehands though
The Streamline Ascend is outstanding! It's almost a hybrid between a mid and a fairway (6 5 -3 .5). Easy to throw straight with tons of glide.
That sounds like an awesome disc!! Thanks for sharing!! I'm going to add it to the list!! Thanks so much!!
Good stuff. Thank you.
Thank you so much, my friend!!
You should try out anything from Lone Star Discs in Lima Plastic. Namely the Curl, Lariat, Frio, and Texas Ranger!
I hear great things about the plastic Lone Star Discs use. I haven't found any of their discs in lower weights, though...I'm speaking of drivers.
@@NickArnette Thank you! Your channel is super helpful for us mortals who love to play!
@@sjutton99 I really appreciate your encouragement. I'm going to put out another video within a week. The second video hasn't had a lot of interest, but I'll keep going for a while and see what happens.
Low Arm Speed Gang!!!
Yes!! We're slow, but we still have as much fun as anyone else out there!!
Try the INNOVA Star Tern in a light weight. I’m 58 and it’s one of my favorite disc.
I have one! I can't throw it well backhand, but I can get a good flick out of it. I think it's a great disc!!
Going to Norway this fall. Might have to see if I can grab some Sune discs!
Sensei - putter (3301)
Maestro - mid-range (4302)
Magician - fairway driver (6402)
Wow, great suggestions!! I'm adding all these to my updated list!! Thanks so much!! Yeah, seems like other manufacturers have better baseline plastic than Innova.
Don't forget about the different weights of these disks also.
I will be talking about picking disc weights in my next video. Also speed. I'll be posting it up this Friday!!
I love my Underworld. It is probably the most thrown disc in my bag besides my putter.
I'm 47 and not throwing more than about 167 feet, did throw 64 metres once. I just don not have the muscle tone from when I was young...I'm trying to throw with lighter discs as 175 g too heavy.
The main thing is to have fun. 167 is still a pretty good throw! Yes, for me, those heavy discs put a lot of extra strain on elbow.
Great information thank you. Except you need to add of the grams in the one column that you have open there. in my opinion
@@NickArnette thank you...that gives me hope. It's been a bit frustrating. kind of stuck at the 250, 300 ft range.
@@dyingfromthelying 250-300 isn't bad at all in my book. Give a light disc a try in base plastic to start with and see what happens. What drivers are you using now?
again thank you I would like to suggest Clach discs Berry is a sweet disc's.
I looked into them once and they don't have any lightweight discs. Has that changed? It seems like a great disc!
Innova Viking!! Thanks for reminding me about that one!
@@NickArnette If I see it in store ill pick it up! Also have you tried MVP's Glitch?
@@doimaster2924 I have a Glitch and love it. It's really easy to throw. It can be a little touchy at times..but most of the time it glides nice and straight with minimal effort.
@mayqlaf I agree, it goes exactly how I throw it and most of the time I release it wrong lol
Thanks for catching my error on the Tesla. I made the changes and they will appear on my updated list when I put it out.
you do not need a light weight for these discs and it takes time to figure how to throw them.
Thank you so much!! I'm going to add the Wolf to the updated list!! Much appreciated!!
