Informative video, Gary. Thanks. I've been using Files for a long time. Watching this confirms that I wasn't doing anything wrong but definitely showed me more things could do (I particularly like all the preview capabilities you alerted me to). Big fan! Please keep it up.
Can we search for and remove duplicate files in the file system? in the Files app? and also, I'd like to be able to search for a file type regardless of what folders it's in and easily manipulate them move them but there's no select option when you do a search like that.
Thanks Gary: Very informative video with great tips. I found using the iOS file system as it was designed has been working for me lately. I have completely abandoned the hierarchical, nested folder methods employed by macOS. Fact is iOnly use iOS these days. Letting the iOS mange and organize files via the apps works very well. As you have demonstrated.
Okay, I'm six minutes into this and I came here to see how to use it for the first time. This is my only Apple product. I don't have other files in the cloud or on a Mac. My File folder needs to be set up and this video seems to make the assumption I want to manipulate files (you may have) that exist. So how do I get started?
So you are saying you have no files? Then you can get started by creating some, if your goal is to just learn how to use this. Use an app that creates things, like Pages for word processing, a graphics app, or something else. You can also "share" from some apps, like Photos to share out a photo as a file.

Also, I deleted a document from my iphone, and it additionally deleted from my Mac.… They should give you an option to have it one but not the other if you choose
Hacks into your iPhone? Like they know your passcode? Yes, if someone knows your password/code to anything that is true. Same for a Mac or any computer. They'd need your phone (physically) and your passcode. Same with computer and password, or any online account. If someone has access, they have access. Just like you have access right now. As for deleting, there is just ONE location for cloud files. You "see" the same location on your devices. If you delete a file it is deleted no matter what way you are looking at it. See ruclips.net/video/S7JYHX2iT9Q/видео.html to better understand how files are stored.

Gary - useful tips, as always. Thank you. I have a question about the location of a file. When I travel, I like to have a copy of important documents available on my iPhone (passport, vax card, foreign health pass, boarding pass, etc.). I am always concerned that I won't have internet access at a critical time (standing in front of an immigration and customs officer, for instance!), so I always store those copies in the location "on my iPhone". But it would be nice if those same docs were available through the iCloud Drive. Is there a way to force the iPhone to both store a document in your iCloud account, but also have it always available on your iPhone (even when you have no internet access)?
i just moved from android to ios and got my stuff transfered but its all not in folders like it was and i literally have thousands idk how to sync it if i can even do that
If you want to transfer large files to one of your Mac’s external drives, you can go into Files -> Shared and connect to your Mac using SMB. Unlike DropBox or some other internet location, you can save things to your Mac’s shared external drives without it being ultimately sent to a cloud location on the internet (or being stored on your local boot drive - which can be of limited size due to the current use of SSDs). This means that for large files like ProRes documents, you can use a Wifi 6 router - I have a Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 mesh with a satellite in my office - to transfer to a shared external drive on my Mac at full Wifi 6 speeds which can approach a gigabit/sec. This is _much_ faster than the USB 2 speeds offered by the lightning port. My Mac’s ethernet port is connected to a LAN port in the office satellite so it gets full gigabit speed to the network, and my iPhone 13 Pro Max connects at Wifi 6 speeds to the satellite’s Wifi 6 network so a copy from the iPhone to the Mac becomes a simple local connection (like two ethernet ports on the same switch, with data never leaving the satellite or having to traverse the mesh network's backhaul). Of course you'll probably never reach that theoretical gigabit/sec speed, but it's still much faster than the USB 2 speed of lightning.
Gary - I am getting this problem when I try to use the Files app on iPhone. It is showing an error message - your device couldn't connect to the server. How do I fix this?
Recents is literally recents. It is a list of what files you have accessed recently. It isn't a "place" that you can add or remove files from. Not sure what you are trying to accomplish by removing a file from a list like that.
Your videos are the best and I never would have survived my switch to Apple products without you. I was watching a video of yours from 2019 and you said you can use Time Machine with a hard drive connected to a router. If you ever do a video about Time Machine again, would it be possible to show how it’s done? I can’t find anything on how it’s done. Look forward to all your videos and thank you for all the help you give ✌️❤️
The problem with a video like that is it would be different for each router (or NAS). So I could do the video and it would only help the small portion who have the exact same router.
Hi Gary. Question: why does the files app sometimes after a few days will open on my iPhone to the iCloud folders instead of the “locations” pane which is what I prefer. I think the iCloud folders is the default “opening” window but I prefer to when I open the app to first see the locations browse pane first. Is there a way to make it stay that way?
Thank you for helping me out now I know how to use it and now I’m learning so much from you now I’m a new subscriber. I can’t wait to learn more more about your videos ❤😇
Thanks Gary. Do you know why the Files app doesn't require a PIN of Face ID? If someone steals my phone and the screen is not locked, they can easily access files within the Files app.
Why would your iPhone not be locked? If it is unlocked, why would your own iPhone refuse to show you the Files app? Your same argument can be made about any and all apps.
Sir one related question/observation. Though files shows Google drive on files and enabled, search does not work on iOS 16.2 both in spot light and even within files. You search a file from files - it is not showing. Even when I copy all my drive files into iPhone locally - then file manager show but spot light fails to show. That said, I notice that my music files haven’t transferred from the old phone to the new. I’ve been trying to figure out how to use Files to make the transfer. (I think iTunes is gone now - good!) Is there a way to transfer files from my Windows PC to Files app in the iPhone/iPad? I don't see the Files app on the "file sharing" section on iTunes software too
Hello. I have an issue involving google docs. When I save a doc to my files, I lose paragraph spacing and end up with a jumbled mess. Would you know a fix?
I don't use Google docs much, but it is generally used as an online document editor. If you are saving it as a file, what format are you using? I'll bet the problem is the format you are using to save isn't a perfect match for whatever it is you are opening it up in afterwards. What's you goal here? Why are you saving (exporting, really) the file from Google Docs?
Hey! Anybody wanna help? I just transferred 40 plus Docs from iFiles to USB. Now my PC doesn't read text, and comes out as Mac Text. Any quick fix? Change file type, etc...
I believe you connect the SD card, then use the context menu in the Files app (or any other way you would move files in the Files app) to move them to the SD Card, which would also be listed in the Files app.
Why don't I have a "Browse" as my top screen on iPadOS15.6.1? I have files I have downloaded to my iPad from my iCloud drive that I no longer want on my iPad but want to keep in my iCloud drive. How do I do that?
Browse is on the iPhone. You won't see that for iPad because you have a whole sidebar instead. There will be a "Remove Download" option to force a file to be removed from the local cache in iPadOS 16. Until then, just let your iPad manage that. It will cache files locally according to how much space is available.

@@Abdul_Ahad_22 Perhaps you aren't looking in the right area in the Files app? I'd call Apple support if exploring the Files app, as I show in this video, doesn't get you what you want.
@@macmost do you know how to connect the files app in server?
@@Abdul_Ahad_22 Sorry, I don't know what you are asking.
I need help with trying to get two soundtracks to work on my files app I downloaded them but it won’t work what should I do?
If I want to move a photo from my iOS photo app to a file folder in the files app, how would I do that? (Paste)
Bring up the actions menu (box with up arrow) and then look for Save to Files.
Very useful, thank you.
I’ve been using Files a bit more recently. I have a new iPhone and a new Mac Mini and am excited about keeping orderly and not filling up local storage. That said, I notice that my music files haven’t transferred from the old phone to the new. I’ve been trying to figure out how to use Files to make the transfer.
(I think iTunes is gone now - good!)
These music files aren’t all purchased through downloads. A lot of them come from CDs (remember those). I have them stored as mp3 (etc) and they are organized into albums (folders) - some “music” content are audiobooks - and I would very much like to figure out how to listen to them on my phone via the Cloud.
I hope this is a pertinent question -perhaps I missed an episode in which you address this very thing?
How can macbook access and manage the "Files" on iPhone ?
I want to copy and paste files (pdf, txt, ...) between iPhone and Macbook, how can I do it ?
"Files" is ok on iPhone, but when iPhone and Macbook connect by cable, I cannot do anything with "Files" even view it.
Can You import directly from Files to Itunes? so frustating when working with various os on computer
Mad knowledge and schooling! BIG UPS G MONEY
Hello.
Is it possible to access any files stored locally on the iPhone when it is plugged into a PC/laptop?
I want to copy files from Files->laptop.
Thank you.
i have a video file on my files app but it just has the date and says flash video but wont let me see it and when i go to the file on my pc it says it a flv video file under type!
That's an old obsolete file type. You may find a website or app that converts it, but best to see if you can get a modern copy of that video.
Great practical video!
How do you change the default save location for “save files” my location is a eandom
Folder buried in my icloud it frustrsting when all I want to do is save locally
Just go to where you want. Use the Favorites bar on the left to get there fast. Then it should remember in that app for next time.
nice job. Useful info for me.
Is there a way to transfer files from my Windows PC to Files app in the iPhone/iPad? I don't see the Files app on the "file sharing" section on iTunes software too
Hello. I have an issue involving google docs. When I save a doc to my files, I lose paragraph spacing and end up with a jumbled mess. Would you know a fix?
I don't use Google docs much, but it is generally used as an online document editor. If you are saving it as a file, what format are you using? I'll bet the problem is the format you are using to save isn't a perfect match for whatever it is you are opening it up in afterwards. What's you goal here? Why are you saving (exporting, really) the file from Google Docs?
@@macmost thank you for the response. I figured out the issue, though. Apparently I just wasn’t using enough page breaks on the document lol.
Excellent sir👌
Hey! Anybody wanna help?
I just transferred 40 plus Docs from iFiles to USB. Now my PC doesn't read text, and comes out as Mac Text.
Any quick fix? Change file type, etc...
How do you move files off the iPhone to an SD card?
