  • The school shooting in Georgia led to charges for the father of the 14-year-old accused gunman. But do laws in the DMV work the same way? Here what we know.

The Law Enforcement Inquiry re prior expressed “attacks/warning” WITHOUT evaluation re these expressed attacks demonstrates “parenting” disconnected from the rest of society. I supposed it might be considered Abuse - akin to not seeking medical evaluation/treatment for severe injury or illness.
Reportedly the NRA originally worked to increase knowledge and practice of safe gun ownership/use. This includes prevention of inappropriate “use” by children or others without the knowledge/ability to safely handle a firearm - which includes WHEN appropriate to use.

By 14, I had 4, the original rifle which had been my grandfather's then my father's, a gift from my best friend's parents, a gift from my father, and the first rifle I ever bought with my own money. The trouble is not, and has never been the gun. The trouble is society and the refusal to teach that there is such a thing as right and wrong, good and evil. Intentions are irrelevant, and results are what matter. We don't allow children to be children, and we especially villify and abuse young boys. Blaming an object for a moral failure is an example of refusing to accept responsibility for societal moral failure.

    • @hueco5002
      @hueco5002 11 дней назад +4

Most states have laws against purchase or possession of a handgun by those under 21. Sometimes things get funky, in some places an 18 year old adult may possess a handgun but not purchase until 21 (so gifts or inheritance are fine).
All that said, most states have no such law for possession of a long gun. A minor can’t purchase a gun legally, but they could possess one. They could be gifted one.
While there is a functional difference between a semi auto rifle and a bolt action, they’re both “long guns” in terms of law. Nothing in Georgia law would stop a minor from possessing a long gun.
You gotta remember, our legal system moves very slowly and it was only two generations ago where the majority of Americans would be classed as “rural” and where hunting for game was “a thing” for kids and teens.
Even today - one couldn’t pass a law outlawing possession of a long gun by minors without making criminals out of rural, law abiding teens just living their life and helping their families.
IMO - we need a new tier of regulation to cover this. What works for cities and ‘burbs doesn’t work for rural and vice-versa. Whatever we do legally for this, it shouldn’t be at the state level.

Guns should be locked away in safes that only the parents know the code to. It’s especially so stupid to have given a rifle to a 14 year old. Personally I to feel it's the responsibility of the parent. That's the problem with young people in this day and time. Children are spoiled, disrespectful, and have no guidance or discipline. For several decades now ,they have completely taken over the family unit, as far as doing what they wish, with no push back or repercussions .not every young person, but the majority of them. In families where parents teach manners, responsibilities and work ethics, children are a lot different. And if a child is punished when they do wrong, they learn to behave . To buy a gun for children whom are irresponsible in the first place, is completely the parents fault too and he should be also held accountable. As should many parents out their failing to do their jobs at raising these kids to be decent adults.

I agree the father used poor judgement presenting a firearm to his 14 year old son, especially with all the warning signs exhibited. But, he had the legal right to do so. Under Georgia law:
Possession by a Minor (Under 18)
It is unlawful for a minor to possess a handgun or for a person to furnish a handgun to a minor. Georgia Code 16-11-132,
The code says nothing about minor possession of a long gun.

However in MANY CASES the firearm comes down to the adults ability to monitor it. At all times. And not being able to check what your child brings to school. Always check it's your responsibility as the adult. To people who say it's not the parents fault or the kids fault or the guns fault you are all wrong period. It's everything from the parent to the child to the gun.

I compete and know many young men and women in the 3-gun competition space. Their parents get them into it young and they stay, often doing quite well. 3-gun competes with a semi automatic rifle, a semi automatic shotgun, and a semi automatic pistol (for most people). It’s not uncommon for firearms to be gifted by parents to kids in this community.
It’s not uncommon for rural kids to be gifted their parent’s or grandparent’s rifles. Especially if it’s heirloom.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the way you were raised was the only way or even the “normal” way. There are different ways to go through life.

You are just going crazy. The reason why the dad got arrested is because he planned out the terrorist attack with his son and bought him the gun to do so. You wouldn't blame those working at the world trade center for the 9/11 attacks. Same thing, it was a terrorist attack planned by the dad.

Charge the dad with conspiracy to commit a terrorist attack. That's what he did. He aided in doing it after his son got in trouble with the fbi for saying he was going to. It's a clear as day case. Him being the parent is irrelevant. He conspired to commit an act of terror.

"tried as an adult" doesn't make him an adult, legally. The main purpose of "trying as an adult" (at least on paper) is to determine if or if not the person can be "rehabilitated" in the juvenile system. The argument is mass murderers, need a harsher punishment and possibily various punishments that aren't available in the juvenile system. For example, they don't want murderers and rapists taking art class next to another 13 year old who is in there for stealing candy. He may at times need solitary confinment, he may need a longer sentence based on the crime, so "tried as an adult" is just short hand for which court system hears the case and what doc oversees his prison sentence it doesn't change his age.

    • @vxy357

BOTH are to blame for this horrible attack. The kid is being charged as an adult for committing mass murder and the father is being charged for giving the AR-15 to his underage son even though the father KNEW that his son was a danger to himself and the community and failed to secure and keep the gun away from his murderous son.

Few will listen to me however sadly and I would know as I warned people earlier when it came to the Crumbley parents and few listened to me then.

Wait until a minor drives drunk with a parents car without the parents knowledge and they charge the parents because it's their car. It will happen eventually if they keep moving down this slope.

ONCE Again .. charge parents all you want that facilitate contribute to their child's crimes. BUT BE CONSISTENT!!
The minor who shot up Oxford high School in Oxford Michigan was in the principal's office with a a counselor and his parents. WITH THE GUN SITTING IN THE KIDS BACKPACK!! Only the kid and his parents were prosecuted and went to jail. THE PRINCIPAL & COUNSELOR, they knew about His MENTAL CONDITION and yet they sent that get back into the classroom that morning, AND THEY WERE NOT HELD ACCOUNTABLE!!!
If your going to hold Parents acciuntable YOU MUST HOLD EVEYONE ELSE!! OR you could hold the murderers rapists and DO THE CRIME , going down these slippery slopes are difficult and dangerous. You must have solid evidence to go pursue others in our emotional thirst for justice.
I guess we need to build and double our prison space.
Hey here's just a starter.. maybe we should post the ten commandments in schools. You know,.. there's a higher moral authority, it's the foundation for American Law, that's where we get the idea of don't murderl, steal Or lie, honor your parents...

Kyle Rittenhouse is a litmus test, that’s for sure. Kyle’s actions were legally justified as self defense. That case is settled law. You don’t have to like it - but how would you go about charging his mom for what amounted to self defense?
You see how crazy that sounds? Again, you can have your own views on things. That’s fine. But your views are not law and if you want to consider the implications of indicting a third party to a crime, there best be a crime. In Kyle’s case…there wasn’t.

This sets a dangerous precedent. Someone is always accountable in some way. In this case, it’s the parent. But considering a 24 hour day, 8 hours of which is sleeping, and 6-8 hours is spent at school, and about 8 hours spent with the parent, how is it that the parent is held totally accountable for that teenager’s actions? The school is partially accountable, considering that education goes way beyond learning reading, writing and arithmetic. Social media, along with the child’s friends, are partially accountable as well. A teenager, when he is with his parents, is not raised in a vacuum. This is why I think the judicial system is practicing over-reach.
