I prefer the art style of Rage 2011 to Rage 2. Despite a more grounded and drab colour palate, characters had more… character. Rage 2 barely even feels like an apocalypse ever happened.
I've been playing this game for over 10 hours now, and I can't stop playing. :) The mechanics remind me of Bioshock, and the visuals are just amazing, as well as the facial animations, voice acting, gameplay and story. So far this game has been worth its price. Totally.
This game looks good but not particularly good, not like Half-Life 2 level or anything. What irks me most of all is, what's the point of spending on shiny graphics when the game itself looks so generic?
What a terrible review, there is nothing to explore here, you walk through the SAME dungeons over and over. They may be visually diverse but you'd be hard pressed to play this game for than a few hours straight as you retread the same boring tasks that have been in the genre since doom. Walk or sneak into a room and kill everything. That's it. The racing was so ho-hum, not to say it was terrible there is definitely a lot of polish on the controls and "mega-textured" environments. But trust me, by the time u reach the second disc it will start to feel like a chore. Did I mention I only spent $7 on it and im still pissed. I got deus ex for only $5 and holy shit is that game way better.
Basically, the difference between Fallout 3/New Vegas and Rage is that the first two are RPGs ( Role Playing Game, and not hardcore in any sense, just rpgs) while Rage is simply a FPS (First Person Shooter) with some rpg elements in it. For this reason these are completely different games that can only be compared on the setting, but that will definitely appeal different kinds of gamers.
@Kaokli The only thing this game has in common with those games is it's perspective. CoD and BF are about modern day settings and weapons. Rage is about a wasteland and fictional weapons (and driving).
@Petey0707 So, we ARE agreeing that Rage is a corridor FPS. If you compare the length of Rage's campaign to the length of other games within that same genre, you'll see that 20 hours of gameplay is quite long. Just a few weeks ago I beat Resistance 3 in one sitting. It took about 12 hours, and it was an amazing game, with a great storyline, but it took me 3 days to beat Rage. And Rage's graphics are nothing short of amazing, the frame rate runs at at least 60fps, there is NO breakage at all
Definitely. This is a LOT like Jak 3. Does that mean it's bad? Quite the opposite. A bit short and confined, but even still, I can't wait for some DLCs.
@austinpowers1124 Wait, why do you think Borderland was better?I have only played Borderland and the game was ok,but got kinda boring after a while since many missions are quite the same. What's so bad in Rage compared to Borderland?I have seen Rage today for 30 Euro at my local shop and I was considering in getting this game.
I think it deserves an 8.5, but it's a good purchase anyway. In the end a lot may agree or disagree but it's up to them to buy it or not. The review could have included more details and info about the Pc version, but I guess we can't expect a video to explain everything, that's what written reviews are for.
@Petey0707 No, I'm not kidding. I'm an avid gamer, and I'm saying with 100% conviction, that this game is extremely polished. Myself, and everyone I know personally that played the game encountered NOT ONE glitch during the entire campaign. If you're playing from a console, you should install the game on your hard drive, because the graphics are streamlined. This game was NOT rushed, it was in developement for over 3 years. And what do you mean the length of the game? The campaign was
I loved Rage, and am still hoping for some kind of followup from the same team, perhaps next time without the texture pop-in? I know it's a minor niggle, but it was something that at times really did muddy the stellar presentation.
How has no one been mentioning this - xbox360 - immense texture fade-in delay and digusting invisible walls EVERYWHERE. It is even still, a really good game
@Jahkillian I'm playing it on the PC. Whatever you play it on, it has thesame graphics, gameplay and story. So it's still a brilliant game. The only thing that could get improvement is the texture loading for things close by. You just turn around and you see the textures loading. :p
@Petey0707 Yes it is, rage has a competitive co-op option, which is similar to Uncharted 2's co-op if you have ever played that game, along with the online multiplayer function.
It depends on your liking of rpg. Fallout is a open world where you can explore and choose what you do and how you do it. Rage is more mission based and i felt it was not so open and exploring. I absolutely love games like fallout and Elder scrolls, Rage is not so much similar to fallout and i felt that Rage got a little repetitive at times. Both are good in their own way. Hope this helps :]
@Chazmg well you have some freedom, more than most fps games, but it's not meant to be open world, I'd recommend buying it anyway though I have it and it's great!
Bought this game a while back for like 10 bucks at a local GameStop when they had a total sellout. I hadn't seen anything of Rage before that, but coming home and starting to play it, I found it a very solid and enjoyable game.
I have this game on pc and I gotta say that I'm loving it!!! amazing gameplay and graphics but heres the bad things: 1- no sli/crossfire support 2- screen tearing 3-vsync always on 4- you gotta save game everytime when you play half of the mission or you'll end up playing the whole mission all over again
With Rage, they decided to make it less of an RPG with FPS elements, and more of an open-world FPS with RPG elemts. The focus is less on the size of the world/story, less on exploration and the capacity to play any way you choose, and more on making the graphics and the combat as epic as possible. Rage is gorgeous, and the combat is really top-notch; nothing will ever top Fallout 3 for me personally, but it can't exactly compete with straight shooters in that department. It's not designed to.
@Petey0707 Not to mention the vast array of weapons, and the variety of situations that you have to adapt to when fighting the enemy. The game forces you to switch between weapons and ammo types to adapt to the different situations. And the A.I. is sublime. The enemies use the environment to their advatage, they take cover, they move strategically, and they often flank you if you're hunkered down in one spot. These elements make for a great game, even if the ending was shitty.
hey, do you guys think I should buy this or Resistance 3? I've been a fan of post apocalyptic shooters for a while now, and these two are kinda similar IMO
@BlackMamba246 it took me 12 hours but I may have missed some stuff. If you are extremely determined to find and do every little thing it would probably take 15.
I only have 2 complains about this wonderful that game I now play on a daily basis: Not big enough (REALLY can't wait for some expansion content), and the initial faulty drivers. So now, my game is running beautifully, and after some new content comes out, I will have 0 complaints (I guess giving this game 100/100 for me!). THANKS again id for another great title! - P.S. I love you.
@ODDNOMAD No no, there wasen't any invisble walls that bugged me, i just felt restricted to driving around in these canions, and there was no reward at all for exploration, everytime i tried to explore there was a damn mountain in front of me, you'd almost always have to follow the road. thats how it felt to me atleast
Just an update...I'm on the second disc now (for Xbox 360) and to me this game has gotten twice as good. I've got about 15 hours in this game on hard difficulty and I must say that yes this is an awesome game. Cool thing is I only paid $30 for it at Gamestop but this is definately worth the full price.
@Petey0707 The reason you logged so hours on Call of Duty was because of the online multiplayer, which you can also do with Rage. I have NO idea why it took you so long to finish Dead Space 2, because it took me about 12 hours from start to finish. When you play a game that looks as good as Rage, the campaigns tend to be short. The longer the and bigger the game, the more downscaled the graphics tend to be. Rage was graphically beatiful, and was quite a large game.
@MrJamieb147 It wasn't Bethesda that did this. They just published it. Id Softworks was the one who developed the game. They are their own company under Zenimax, like Bethesda.
and Fallout 3 and Borderlands apparently although I haven't played those)- oh and the remote control car idea that I personally first saw in James Bond: Everything or Nothing. Its segments will seem familiar in isolation but the high frame rate (on PS3 anyway), the challenge of not always having enough ammunition and the subtle artistry of the environments (an interesting graphics engine that has some flat looking images as well as shiny looking ones) manages to make it a intriguing package.
point is if you like straight forward fun shooting youll love this game, its like an rpg for beginners you wont get lost and no matter your experience level its fun.
@mrmartial The developers said that this is a "campaign" game at heart, and they wanted to take a risk and do something completely different with the multiplayer, which I commend them for. I just got done beating the game, and it is by far, the most graphically beautiful game I've played on the XBOX 360 so far. It puts most other games to shame. Trust me, even without a normal FPS multiplayer, it's still worth every penny to buy.
@Delta2357 which i should get: RAGE which does have multiplayer and openworld, or ARKHAM CITY which doesnt have multiplayer but so many and many side quests and hours to play, or UNCHARTED 3 with short but interesting campaign with multiplayer?
i think thats a good rule, but i think its more like an hour for every 2 or 3 dollars, since there are very few 40, 50, or 60 hour games. Also, length does not necessarily mean quality. Uncharted 2 only took me 10 hours to complete and i still consider that money well spent.
@Delta105RUS Controls? If you're talking about the keyboard then I don't follow. Every game has different keyboard controls, and it takes a few hours to get used to a specific game's controls. But then if you play for a while your hands and fingers start cramping up and stuff. And yeah, the graphics and stuff are usually better, but at what price?
i think it would have deserved a 9 with a deeper story to suck you in and maybe some kind of campaign co-op. the characters in it which I've come across were very unique compared to other games in that you can tell alot of work was put into their design and animation. enemy AI was kind of unpredictable at times on the higher difficulty, which is a good thing.
@eilam42 I'm not disagreeing with you're score or anything, but what actually IS new in an FPS anymore? Apart from gadgets and things (like in this game) nothing much has been done for years.
@Petey0707 and the world is fully realized, detailed, and breathtaking. It's not the storyline that makes Rage a great game (which I didn't think was that bad, except for the ending), it's the gameplay, and the world, which is believable and comes to life with the incredible engine they used to build the game with. The gameplay is smooth, and shooting a gun feels realistic. The controls are extremely responsive, and makes killing mutants, bandits, or the Authority even more satisfying.
@Mr4pp what do you mean it did a poor job on making it "feel" like an open world game? does it restrict your freedom in any way? does it have barriers sorta like fallout new vegas had(invisible walls)?
This is a great game, don't disregard it just because of its week story. I,m on my second play through and just can't get enough. Very few games get gunplay right like this. And the audio visual combination is truly breathtaking.
I just picked up this game up yesterday for PS3 for only $15 and so far i LOVE it it's like a mix of Borderlands and Fallout 3 I think more people should try it :)
This review is great but it didn't explain the console differences. PS3 8gig install 1 disc noticeable texture pop in. 360 22gig install 3 discs nearly no pop in but you have to change discs.
I did everything there was to do in the campaign and it took me 16 hours. No, I didn't rush I actually took a lot of time to absorb the environments and such
I love this game. I don't know why people hate it so much. Mostly because of the buggy release I guess, but that got fixed quickly enough for me to get the game cheaper afterwards. The textures aren't amazing? Neither were the Skyrim textures. Okay, the story is not great, but I'm still having a lot of fun playing this. It's definitely not a game to remember through the ages, but it's still a great game.
Great review! i dont like when youtubers talk shit about games like when they are dumb enough to show the bad things of a game, i like this type of reviews that focus only on the positive things they games offer to the players
There isn't a whole lot going on with the story but Presentation/gameplay/graphics are what make this game shine. Its not all about graphics but I would buy this game just to walk around and look haha. Solid game
@au25 I *know*... And I think IGN liked it much too. "...actually one of the more positive reviews of", "...one of the more positive", "...one of the more", "one of more". "ONE", "OF THE more"... Okay, you get the point. I was saying don't yell "bullshit" on Gamespot for actually giving a "GREAT", 8.0, score to this game. No-one on ArsTechnica and Joystiq were yelling at them for bashing this game mostly to high heaven. Gamespot sounded positive, and didn't tell you to "skip this" like Ars did.
I got it at the midnight release, let me just say...these are hands down the best graphics on a console...ever. I also thoroughly enjoy the combat, you feel a rush with every shot because the characters have great animations and motions in response to every shot
From what you're saying, it sounds like maybe this game would have been better as a prequel that was made later. I do think it's great to have the story before what you're describing, but without the context of what happens next, it probably wasn't the best part of the whole story. Here's hoping they have another game this great that can carry on the Rage universe.
@SpadeAce90 : I found a copy of it for €30. Is that amount worth RAGE? I want to know because I'm considering on buying it. I've seen gameplay but I'm still agnostic about it.
@tontsa911 after a patch that released yesterday, the bugs and brokenness of the pc version has been fixed for most, but a small amount of people still find it broken..
In its FPS segments it's essentially an old school ghost train of a game, as was Half Life 2 before it, funnelling you along a linear series of events but with an impression of scale in parts. It's a game that knows well the heritage of both shooter and horror themed games and uses these aspects knowingly. So it's a thinking man's game in an odd way if you're a thinking man who thinks, as ID seem to, that story is sometimes a pretension that games can do with less of.
People are all mad it wasn't bigger, but it seems like a practical choice. Games like Fallout are fantastic, but are in some ways "too" huge. They're notoriously glitchy because of the sheer size, and when moving to consoles, they got even worse. And the ability to do a main mission, go off on side quests, work for factions, and return to it 30 hours later, that central story gets kind of neutered. No matter how good it is, it loses impact if I can play the game for a week without addressing it.
I'm thinking about buying this game but I was wondering how the texture loading is and if it is really buggy without installing? I really wish the rental place had this game so I could just rent it instead.
There were several fixes for the texture issues you know, I used one and it worked quite well 99% of the time. The biggest issue I have is with the way the game ended. It felt like we were finally about to start doing stuff that actually had an impact on the game world, and then BAM it was all over, complete with a terribly presented ending. It would be like if Fallout 3 ended with Megaton.
to those that haven't played this game, my review -10-12 hours average FULL gameplay for a 6-7 years of development -little to non-existant story -awesome at first, repetitive mid to end game -small world for an ambitious fallout clone -texture rendering bugs especially PC version for a $60 game, NOT WORTH IT, rent it or borrow it from your friend better yet, wait for a 'GOTY' edition with all bug fixes, DLCs, etc when it is $19.99
@Delta105RUS Well, still doesn't change the fact that you have been left with the short end of the stick. Most games also use engines made ages ago. It is very rare for a game to use new engine. And still that doesn't make difference to the fact that companies care more about console launches, use more money on them and publishers give way more green lights for games on consoles.
i dont know what people are talking about, this game is great, the best ive played in years its alittle short and lacking story but other then that its amazing
@thatJimwiththenes thanks mate, 360 users get lied too quite alot. Like exclusive content.. Only series is Halo, Gears of War 3, L4D, and Forza Series. Everything else is also on PC.
OH YEAH, I BOUGHT THE NEW HD COPY OF SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS (MY ALL TIME FAVORITE GAME) AND I STILL ENJOY RAGE A LIL MORE. ITS A GREAT GAME...REAL TALK. NEXT ON MY LIST IS BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY, BATTLEFIELD 3, SKYRIM, AND MW3 (YEAH MY SOCIAL LIFE IS ON PAUSE FOR THIS WHOLE MONTH AND NEXT). IF ANYBODY TALK BAD ABOUT RAGE THEN THEY HAVENT PLAYED IT YET...I PROMISE YOU.
@360RBG Fallout was still a good game, but Rage is more polished graphically. Rage looks like it has better adventure atmosphere than fallout. I can't believe this game is able to run smooth with very good visuals.
What did he say about the save system? You can save ANYWHERE and anytime you like, Quit the game and start right where you left? What more can you ask for!
@Xtreemeguy what do you think sucks?the combat is just awesome the characters are goofy but funny the races are really fun way to customize your vehicle.the only bad thing about rage is the story
@TheNatManRS If you want a deep story read a book. 'Games', whether it's a board game, a sport or a videogame are not necessarily meant to be about story other than 'this is where you are, this is what you need to do'. To me, it's much better that Rage wears it no-nonsense story on its sleeve rather than indulge in the usual pseudo-meaningful sci-fi. Rage shows a great appreciation of sci-fi (like the Bladerunner-style Subway city) but it's thankfully got little time for sci-fi pretensions.
One of the best fps games ive ever played
Wow you are so cool. Not.
Agreed
I don't understand the hate for this game. I like it, a lot.
I love it to the world is very interesting
No I thought it was very good and looks lovely with my very average gpu (gtx950)
Reminds me so much of mad max fury road. Can't wait to play it
the first 30 second is the best game montage i've seen in VERY long time, amazing editing. gives me chills every time i see it
This game looks like a realistic borderlands AWESOME
Just wait until Destiny comes out ;D
xFireGatezx and look what happened lol same issues aside from better multiplayer.
I prefer the art style of Rage 2011 to Rage 2. Despite a more grounded and drab colour palate, characters had more… character. Rage 2 barely even feels like an apocalypse ever happened.
The ending of this game sucked
This game had so much potential. It didn't live true to it's hype. I just bought this game for 5 dollars though so i'm gonna give it a try.
would love a rage 2 on ps4
+Hayden Onion I know.quite a while ago as well.id still love a rage 2.
+Alex Mackay Bethesda announced they sold enough copies to make a sequel.
It's happening right now.
Funny, this comment was posted 2 years ago, and they just revealed the trailer for Rage 2 with gameplay coming out tomorrow
Alex Mackay 2yrs later, your wish came true
I've been playing this game for over 10 hours now, and I can't stop playing. :)
The mechanics remind me of Bioshock, and the visuals are just amazing, as well as the facial animations, voice acting, gameplay and story.
So far this game has been worth its price. Totally.
RAGE and Fallout should unite
did he purposely not mention the texture pop-in for a reason?
This game looks good but not particularly good, not like Half-Life 2 level or anything.
What irks me most of all is, what's the point of spending on shiny graphics when the game itself looks so generic?
I don't see how it looks generic at all lol
LinkMarioSamus how is a game with first-person shooting and vehicular combat generic? 😂
if i found borderlands boring, wil i find this game boring?

marge simpson opinion respected but fuck me I strongly disagree with you
should i get for pc?

@NifE4HD
He just said it doesn't auto save very often. He also implied you can manually save at any time you want, which is fine with me.
Game looks stunning ,but is it worth the coin? Wich game should I buy instead of this then?
@Kaokli
The only thing this game has in common with those games is it's perspective. CoD and BF are about modern day settings and weapons. Rage is about a wasteland and fictional weapons (and driving).

@Qorumz i played and ended U2 and it was awesome experience.....does U3 match it in intensity or even surpass it?
@LiangHuBBB I'm not sure what it is, I think rage is a bit too linear, and I love Borderlands art style.

i think it would have deserved a 9 with a deeper story to suck you in and maybe some kind of campaign co-op. the characters in it which I've come across were very unique compared to other games in that you can tell alot of work was put into their design and animation. enemy AI was kind of unpredictable at times on the higher difficulty, which is a good thing.
@eilam42 I'm not disagreeing with you're score or anything, but what actually IS new in an FPS anymore? Apart from gadgets and things (like in this game) nothing much has been done for years.
@Petey0707
and the world is fully realized, detailed, and breathtaking.
Hay u tube I got a question shoud I buy this or just cause 2 n is rage worth buying n is it co'op not over xbox live
@SakraRO if you're looking for a story, go with rage
@SpaceRazzer so you're saying it's worth $60? i dont know wheter to buy it or not, 20 hours of gameplay seems a little short.
There isn't a whole lot going on with the story but Presentation/gameplay/graphics are what make this game shine. Its not all about graphics but I would buy this game just to walk around and look haha. Solid game
in the beginning of the game there is a popup that recommends that you save early and often because it doesnt autosave often
@FoodStampBarry nah ! not THAT bad on pc . some config editing needed to fix texture poping and screen tearing
@MrAwesomesauce101 Because as we all know, graphics are by far the most important feature of any game.
@au25 would you give this game more and lower then a 8?
From what you're saying, it sounds like maybe this game would have been better as a prequel that was made later. I do think it's great to have the story before what you're describing, but without the context of what happens next, it probably wasn't the best part of the whole story. Here's hoping they have another game this great that can carry on the Rage universe.
Fallout 3/NV's main quest lines can be beaten in under 7hrs easily... if your taking 20hrs your exploring or doing side quests.
@totetoBT It is but it is very fast paced like Call of Duty, Homefront, and Battlefield. Plus the driving is like Motorstorm with guns on the cars.
@Mr4pp I agree. Plus the replay value was not very good.
@Jex516 nope they are different
There were several fixes for the texture issues you know, I used one and it worked quite well 99% of the time. The biggest issue I have is with the way the game ended. It felt like we were finally about to start doing stuff that actually had an impact on the game world, and then BAM it was all over, complete with a terribly presented ending.
It would be like if Fallout 3 ended with Megaton.
to those that haven't played this game, my review
-10-12 hours average FULL gameplay for a 6-7 years of development
-little to non-existant story
-awesome at first, repetitive mid to end game
-small world for an ambitious fallout clone
-texture rendering bugs especially PC version
for a $60 game, NOT WORTH IT, rent it or borrow it from your friend
better yet, wait for a 'GOTY' edition with all bug fixes, DLCs, etc when it is $19.99
@Delta105RUS Well, still doesn't change the fact that you have been left with the short end of the stick.
Everything else is also on PC.
i have chance get this on 10€, should i get it?
@Delta105RUS what system are you currently running? what are the specs?
@360RBG Fallout was still a good game, but Rage is more polished graphically. Rage looks like it has better adventure atmosphere than fallout.
I can't believe this game is able to run smooth with very good visuals.
What did he say about the save system? You can save ANYWHERE and anytime you like, Quit the game and start right where you left? What more can you ask for!
I've not finished this game yet, but I'm really impressed with the facial animations...
@Xtreemeguy
what do you think sucks?the combat is just awesome the characters are goofy but funny the races are really fun way to customize your vehicle.the only bad thing about rage is the story
