In A Violent Nature is an ambient slasher film, brought to us from Canadian filmmaker Chris Nash.
The film allows us to follow from the perspective of the killer, and relies solely on its setting to tell its story.
Is it worth it, or is it a bust?

My whole entire theater including my friend and I gagged during the yoga kill. The movie felt like playing a F13th game with its 3rd person walking scenes and hearing characters/npc doing their own thing in the distance. I really was enjoying the movie until the lackluster 3rd act. It’s a 2.5/5 film for me. However, this is the type of experimental horror I respect but not whatever tf was Skinamarink

Oh I completely agree. This was at least mildly entertaining. Skinamarink? Yikes

I open RUclips to listen to something while I drive home from the theater after watching In A Violent Nature, and your review is the first thing I see. What timing! haha
Great honest review, as usual, Nick! I agree with your positives and understand your reasoning for the "negatives that aren't real negatives". I assumed this movie was going to be presented the way it was before going in, so it actually met and (in some ways) exceeded my expectations. I'm a huge Friday the 13th fan and felt it was a loving homage that showed us a new perspective. This movie is simultaneously everything we've seen before in a Friday movie, while also feeling fresh. In that way, I feel like it succeeds in spades. The lack of score and the great sound design made the experience more immersive for me, personally. I loved how the movie left us expecting something more at the end and then left us hanging ominously. I actually did feel tense in the last few scenes because of this. Violent Nature is easily my favorite horror I've seen this year.

This is definitely a F13 movie, and I think that’s why it got such high marks across the board. It works so well. I’m glad you loved it!

You nailed this one perfectly man. Even tho I think it’s a one and done and that’s okay, I’d really like to see the events of ten years ago the Ranger mentioned.

Its really not Friday the 13th at all. This movie was exactly what I wanted. Its not a 1980's music video slasher horror movie. It even had several humorous moments that made me absolutely laugh out loud. The kills are fantastic and I think Johnny the killer could possibly become a cult classic. Time will tell. Im hoping for a part 2 and hopefully it wont be watered down with a musical score. I gave it a 7 out of 10.

There’s Friday the 13th aspects, but if this movie was trying to imitate that movie, then it didn’t take full advantage of that at all. The pacing. The types of kills. The lack of a good killer theme. No nudity.
I saw more 70’s exploitation themes with a Jason like killer, that’s also reminiscent of many other slasher killers.

This movie tried very hard to fill a void. This movie tries VERY hard to please Friday the 13th fans. I appreciate the effort, but it just doesn’t live up.
First of all, I’ll applaud everything this film did right. As a throwback to slasher cinema of the 1980s, most specifically Paramount’s Friday the 13th franchise, this film delivers on some fronts. The slash scenes themselves are nasty. The character is visually well put together. The setting works.
However, the film has no atmosphere. In 1978, John Carpenter made Halloween for $300,000. In 1979, Sean Cunningham filmed Friday the 13th for $600,000. Both were low budget independent films. Both had amazing (and now iconic) musical scores which have both films atmosphere and dread. In a Violent Nature needed a score badly. All you listened to was 90 minutes of footsteps. That made the film incredibly boring and very difficult to sit through.
Also, none of the characters in this movie are likable. Now, Friday the 13th and Halloween films are certainly not character studies with deep personification that will change your life, but they do have fun, lively, memorable, and likable characters. The characters in In a Violent Nature were flatter than a piece of cardboard. Even their reactions to either experiencing death or witnessing it was flatter than an ironing board.
All in all, this movie did some things right, but unfortunately the lack of a music score and actors who were seemingly not even trying to provide ANY emotional reaction whatsoever completely took me out of the movie, bored the hell out of me, and made me not want to watch this movie again.

This sums up my reaction. Usually I agree with Nick 100% on everything but this movie was awful in my opinion. Everything dragged, the characters were idiots and the final 10 minutes were infuriating on many levels

@@XtremeEffect I wasn’t a big fan or anything. I found it passable. But the characters absolutely sucked

I’m interested, not so much for gore but the atmosphere. Hopefully it’s not a one and done…if it’s good, of course.

just saw it. it doesnt feel like friday the 13th at all, since it is something new on its own. This film succeeded in what it set out to do, imo. It gained my respect by the end of it, that i didnt even mind the ending scene and the second to last kill scene was my favorite, lol.

i like the last 15 mins where the shift is now to Kris. Kris is becoming a killer. With the trauma she saw and the whole night and day of running. Her mind has changed completely and shes becoming a "high tension" lady. Remember the movie is about the killer's perspective. So forget Johnny in the last 15mins. The new killer is Kris at this point and if there will be a sequel then it's her doing the walking around the woods. Remember she was holding a lighter. She will take that gasoline and burn that lady and she will take that axe as well. Part 2 lets follow Kris

Looks like the folks behind this movie found a way to beat the folks fighting over the Friday the 13th franchise.
