If you know anything about me, you know that I think The Exorcist is objectively the greatest horror movie of all time.
But even with the great ones, they have their detractors. Today, I’m going to read and react to terrible reviews for, The Exorcist.

Read terrible reviews for The Evil Dead (1981) there's got to be some negative reviews.

I went to a screening of the exorcist at a famous theater here in nj about 5-6 years ago. I guess there were people of a younger generation, because they were laughing at some of the scary parts like the head twist. I guess it didn’t stand up to modern effects for them. It really ruined the atmosphere of watching it, especially because I wasn’t born when it came out so it was probably the one chance I’d have to see it in a theater.

I just don’t see the humor in it, and never have. A small child going through such torture, in such explicit ways, should be unsettling to anybody

I'm sensing a trend of younger movie viewers going into a horror film like it's a pop-up haunted house. Walk in, a few guys in masks jump at you randomly, you get out. Just quick, cheap adrenaline hits.
I'll probably have to re-watch the Exorcist again someday. I've only seen it once and that was years ago. But I have seen William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist 3 like a dozen times now and absolutely love it.

Again, not an exorcist fan. I watched it, said "Really? This is one of the most terrifying films ever?" Exorcist and religious horror is generally not my genre. Probably because I can't take it seriously. I remember my mom and I were watching an exorcist movie in the early 2010's and when it came to the "Christ compels you" scene of the movie, my mom and I both looked at each other and laughed, and my mom is religious! And I only went to see the movie because my mom wanted to go see it. I had zero interest in the film.
Hell, I've even said in past comments "The exorcist isn't even that greatly directed" by that I meant "It isn't like a Dario Argento or Sergio Martino movie." Of course The exorcist is well directed, but compared to my italian horror masters, no it isn't. But again, it's like.....really, your gonna compare the exorcist to Argento and Martino and say it isn't as good? Or an American giallo like Blow out with Trovolta....okay, not everybody is a big giallo fan like you.
And I have thought about giving The exorcist a rewatch, since I was biased into thinking "this is the scariest film ever made." and I just ended up scratching my head. You know, it's like the film I start counting. I watched it last year and it isn't really a horror film. it's more "horror light." I gave it a rewatch this year and really liked it, far more then the last time. First time, I liked it enough, second time liked it even more since I knew what to expect and wasn't expecting it to be a horror movie.More of a drama then a horror movie. I really loved the acting and drama in the film. So....I might actually really like The exorcist once I divorce it from it's reputation and just enjoy it from an artistic family drama slow burn with some horror in the mix.
As for "bad acting" Come on, I don't like The exorcist, but the acting is great by everybody.
The lighting is good. The music is good.
I think one of the major reasons why I don't like the exorcist is the same reason why I generally don't like ghost movies. I like a few, but...like for instance. Poltergeist.....the chair scene.....WHY WOULD EVIL SPIRITS DO THAT?! You know, The frightners made fun of this "The toilet lid flaps up and down" "The bed levitates." ......WHY?! Because the "ghost buster" Michael J Fox is a con man who can see and talk to ghosts and the ghosts are his friends and they mess with people so he can "exorcist" the house. Or the film Beetlejuice. The walking talking sheet ghosts "GET OUT OF OUR HOUSE!!!!" It's stuff like that in ghost movies that just make me go "I can't take this seriously." As John Landis said "What The exorcist does is take a ridiculous premise; the power of Christ compels you and all that and you totally buy it." I can't buy it,lol. It's very rare for me to like any exorcist type movie. In fact...I don't think I like any exorcist type movie. So why don't i like the exorcist? Because it's an exorcist movie. I can't "buy into it" because the entire appeal/premise of the film I aint into. I aint into possession movies. But again, might be hope for me yet. I might end up looking past the plot of the movie and enjoying the acting and artistry that went into the film. The directing, etc.

Been taking a back seat on the comment sections lately, but wanted to just say that I been enjoying your content and especially these type of videos. Always funny looking up bad reviews for great films! You will have a hay day doing this for the SAW movies lol. Most people were insanely harsh on those films. Anyways, keep up the awesome work Nick, you’re killing it man!

Where to start ... I can't help but think a lot of these reviews are made for an audience, simply to get likes and comments .. The people who wrote these reviews either paid very, little attention to the film or simply couldn't be bothered to follow and understand the film, especially how dark the subject, matter truly is ... This film is 1973 , the year I was born, so would've been shocking back then - just,as it is today ... Some of these "reviewers" clearly don't like and/or understand the simplicity,if human drama and the horror that comes with,it ... They also don't seem to understand the simplicity, and beauty,of storytelling .. The films a slow burn because they use the characters to tell a story and build up to where it needs to be ... The Exorcist is a classic and a masterpiece, simple as that ... This modern generation seems to lack, appreciation for such things - how many if their favorite films wouldn't have been made if it wasn't for the Exorcist?

Most people nowadays have the attention span of a tick, so I would assume that if shit isn't jumping out at them, they aren't entertained. The Exorcist is not just a horror movie it's a master class in film making and should be respected.

Weird timing on this one. I just put on Criterion. Scrolling through and there’s The Exorcist. It’s probably a sign I should watch it, but it’s too dark a movie for me tonight.
I’ve been watching this review series from you, and there just seem to be lots of trolls. I’d like to see some thought out criticism of these classics. It would be more interesting.

Hating on this film by young people is just the old "we can't like what old people like, even if it is good". They try to pretend everything in the past sucked including music and fashion. Some of it is the insecurity and envy that most things today are worse than the past.

  • @richardstange5939

I think one issue with The Exorcist is that it is faith based horror. Even putting the film’s age aside, many people in today’s society in America have moved away from Roman Catholicism and the church for many reasons. Since this narrative relies so heavily on Christianity, I think that might taint the film for many modern viewers who have long moved away from the church. Certainly, the film can be read from other contextual perspectives than that of faith, but I believe that many modern viewers only read it on the surface, and if they do not believe in the faith that this film is based on, it will not have the same effects on them.

Does a movie really have to be "scary" to be good? I mean unless you're watching most horror movies as a young child what movies are scary? Especially these days as most of the movie going audience are beyond desensitized to horror. There should be a test to take before you're allowed to review a movie. 🤦

Bro, I’m just curious why do you care what a bunch of stupid critics think of films that 99% of people love and think is a classic. I mean you did a video on Halloween now the exorcist come on dude fuck what other people think. Like their opinions don’t matter because the fact is pretty much everyone else in the entire world loves these movies especially Halloween. I mean it is literally one of the most important horror films in the horror genre I mean, it literally changed the game. Well, actually, I take that back. I think psycho really was the game changer, but then Halloween brought it to a whole other level. Like for example, it gave birth to a genre, which is what we all consider as the slasher genre. so honestly dude who cares what those people think because I don’t.
