The makeup is incredible. They turned a cute little girl into one of the scariest monsters of all time.
Like you said at first, Father Merrin had a heart attack because he already had a weak heart. The demon didn't directly kill him; it was just the effort. His faith was very strong, but his body was weak. Damien had a weak faith, but a strong body.
And even in this Director's Cut version, there was still one thing that didn't come across as powerfully as the book did, and that is that Father Karras actually died a happy person. This exorcism proved to him beyond any doubt there was a devil, so if there was a devil, there had to be a God. I wish the movie could have made that more obvious, but I know everybody who worked on the movie did their very best - and I STILL think this is one of the best book-to-screen adaptions I've ever seen.
@@flmlvr I think it's obvious in the movie. The look on his face when the bed levitates - contrasts much with the supercilious scientist attitude he took towards Regan as he attempted to rationalise away her possession. He's far more afraid of God than he is of a demon - demons and darkness and evil are only the negative space of God. A Christian's faith in God requires seeing God in one's fellow man - Karras wasn't really able to do this as evinced b yhis disgust at the homeless man, a moment of weakness the demon picked up on. Him choosing to sacrifice himself and the resolve he has in that scene which is very different from the character he had before is an obvios testament to his restored faith. It doesn't need to be more 'obvious' and people not getting it aren't getting the themes anyway - you seem to think he should have been smiling as he threw himself thru the window or something which is ridiculous, Christ wasn't smiling on the cross either
Glad you got to experience what is widely regarded as the BEST horror movie ever made. No jump scares, no silly gimmicks, just a horror that gets inside your head. Its not only regarded as the best horror film, but also one of the best films ever made. Books have literally been written on this. Masterpiece of cinema.
My mother wouldn't let me watch this when I was a kid. I snuck out of my room, turned the volume down, and sat about 3 feet away from the television to watch it. I was 10 years old and had nightmares almost every night for about a week or so. Noticed your edit cut out the most iconic shot in the movie...Father Merrin arriving at the house. It was inspired by René Magritte's painting, The Empire of Light.

Jyn x Ryl: I was 20 when I saw The Exorcist in a darkened, sold-out theater in 1973. This was the first high-quality horror movie; the first about demonic possession. We knew nothing about it, much less - believed it was possible - until this movie. We knew it was based on a true story. We weren't desensitized to the vile language, violence, or special effects as people are now. For those & more reasons, for us 1973 audiences, The Exorcist was 10X scarier than any movie we saw before, after, or ever will see. The proof is that people were running down the aisles during the movie to the lobby to vomit or feint during the movie. No other movie EVER scared the audience that much. NEVER. No other movie comes close to how scary this was for us in 1973;l not close.

That's what make that scene even more horrific to me. Regan was begging the demon not to force her into doing that unspeakable act. The absolute terror she must have felt! that poor child 😟.
Jumpscares are different with older movies like this, definitely still have creepy vibes though and this one really holds up well. It was a big phenomena when it released.
It made me so happy when you guys were laughing in the beginning. Cuz I knew you weren't going to be laughing for very long. Loved it!

This movie is 50... Years... Old... Let's just let that sink in for a moment... It was sensationally radical for its time and has long been considered the epitome of horror ever since ❤

Watch any demonic possession movie in the last 20 years and none of them still come close to the shocks, the swearing, and the taboo breaking stuff that was in this movie.

This movie is 50 years old, so it won’t give the same effect that it did to the audience 40 or 50 years ago. This film was ahead of its time during the 70’s. This was the blueprint of the horror film genre.

Hi ladies, being only 9 years old when this movie came out, it’s been scaring me half my life. It’s now my favorite horror movie of all time, and in my humble opinion , a masterpiece in film making. I live in DC, and very close to Georgetown where a lot of the filming locations are located. For a better understanding of how this movie shocked audiences in 1973, there’s several documentaries here on RUclips. Even I remember stories of my older brothers who went to see it, were talking about people fainting and throwing up in the theaters. There were long lines too and sold out shows.
This movie is the gold standard for demonic possession movies. Every single possession movie that's come out since this movie pales in comparison. I believe that this is the first movie to ever feature a Ouija board as a demonic conduit. This movie still holds up 50 years later!
The only EXORCIST worth watching. (And Reagan smacking the doctor to the floor has always been hilarious.)

Ellen Burstyn who played the Regan’s mom in this movie is still alive, well and acting. She plays the mom of main character Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: Organized Crime.
I always took it that when Regan saw the collar of Father Dyer and kissed him on the cheek that she had some vague memory of a priest having helped her.
Laughter is often a substitute to fear.
gets me that this movie doesn't focus on jumpscaring you, instead it creates that atmosphere in your head, the context, the character construction, from Merryn to Regan to Chris to Karras each one, brilliant.
The movie usually sneaks up on you when you are alone and you suddenly find yourself thinking about it.
Jump scares and gore are the modern movie tropes but back then it was usually more about the psychological aspect.
Funnily, modern movies don't scare me at all.

I saw another reaction video. When the demon called the priest a f@gg0t she said: "oh and the demon is also homophobic!" 😆😆
1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱
2. The priest "Tom" that Karras first confess his lack of faith to was a real Catholic priest IRL.
3. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣4. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release.
5. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit.
6. Father Merrin and the demon/Pazuzu had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis.
7. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually her coccyx was fractured when the demon makes her hard fall. Her painful look is real.
8. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter.
9. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her.
10. Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith.😇

i was only scared once by the exorcist, when i was staying overnight at my stepdads moms house, for no good reason other than they wanted me to for fun once when i was a kid.. and i was feeling uncomfortable, and couldnt sleep when they all went to bed.. so i got up and went into the living room, and turned on the tv, and as soon as the picture came on, it was an ad for the exorcist showing that part where her head spins around the second time, and snaps into place.. and i was like what the f, and turned it off
I've never sat through this whole movie. It truly scared me. I'm a big horror fan, but this movie has many elements in it that are true to my faith. I think that's what frightened me the most about it. Thank you so much for the reaction!

The old priest at the beginning in the desert was not washing down his medicine pills with alcohol, no.
It was tea.
So, when the girl's head twists around. the voice that speaks is not Regan; it is Burke the dead director. "Do you know what she did, your cunting daughter?" This is the demon taunting the mother using Burke's voice, meaning, "Did you know your fucking daughter killed me?" Also, Burke died from his head twisted all the way around, and that is what happens to Regan. Now as to WHY she didn't immediately die we'll never know, but it happened in the novel too.
I think this is more like a horror drama than a "trying to get the audience with jump scares" movie. I hope you both skip part 2 and react to the actual sequel "Exorcist 3" (directed by the man who wrote the novel). I'm not even a horror fan, but I would say part 3 is a good movie even if you remove the horror element.

Saw this on television. I lived alone in a small apartment. The movie started in the evening when there was still daylight in the room. It ended in the dark. Afterwards, I was so unnerved that I had to go out for a ride to where there were some bright lights

If you like this masterpiece, I'd like to recommend you another movie about possession: The exorcist of Emily Rose (2005), which I think it's a great one based on a real case in Germany.
Another amazing one about angels, demons and possesions is "Constantine" (2005).

It's not hidden, but it's also not highlighted: earlier, the man to whom Regan spoke those words was in a conversation with another guest at the party. His words in that conversation revealed that he was an astronaut, soon to go into space. (He was talking about how much room there was in an Apollo space-capsule, compared to the much smaller amount of room in the capsules of the Gemini and Mercury programs.) Regan is telling him that he'll die in space.
The screenplay for this movie was based on the novel which itself was based on an actual exorcism performed in 1948. The subject of the exorcism was a 14-year-old boy from New Jersey. Because of family connections, the exorcism was performed in St. Louis Missouri. The details of the exorcism were documented in the notes of the priests involved, which were located in the archives of St. Louis University. The exorcism lasted several weeks, but did not actually involve any spinning heads or floating beds.
Also, as a matter of interest. The character of the younger priest, father Dyer was played by father William J. O’Malley, Society of Jesus, a consultant who was brought on to the film and was later given the bit part. Father O’Malley, until his recent passing was an instructor at Fordham university preparatory school in New York.

There are a few scary movies that are "go to" for suspense, horror and scare that NEVER get old: Night of the Living Dead, Silver Bullet, The Exorcist, The Possession, The Conjuring, Dark Skies, the original IT 1 and 2.
The detective gave ridiculous casting to the question of who was in the movies, so the priests saying they seen it was a joke.

In '73, no ever saw a movie like this before. I was 10 years old. So I didnt get to see it. But I remember how everyone freaked out about it.

Don't miss "The Bad Seed" , the original from 1956. Hardly anyone is reacting to it. I doubt that anyone who's seen it has ever forgotten it.

My parents and my grandmother went to the theater to see this. While my parents were scared to death my grandma laughed through the whole thing.
Lieutenant Kinderman, the police detective, is played by Lee J. Cobb, who in _12 Angry Men_ played Juror Number Three, the one who hadn't seen his son in two years.

This movie came out in 1973. There were only VERY FEW really scary horror movies before that, and they also have never shown any of these kinds of things.
That is why it traumatized many people in those days.
But since then shocking things, swearing, and violence has become so normal in movies that you have seen hundreds of movies with those type of things, so you have become used to it.
But it says a lot that it is still more shocking and scarier than most movies today. So imagine how it was half a century ago for people.

what an honest and polite reaction. The Exorcist may not be as scary today as it was in the 70s. But it remains an honest drama, about real people who could be living in our neighborhood. Such a well-tied script. Three distinct nuclei that come together in the final act for a single purpose. Save an innocent girl from evil. The Exorcist was nominated for 10 Oscars and shocked the conservative population of the 70s because it was not afraid to take risks and break paradigms. Then watch the documentary about this film, as it is a lesson on how to write a script and make films.
Kudos to the team who did the special effects and make up of the movie. Impressive work. Some examples:
The most disturbing scenes were played by an adult actress, Eileen Dietz, of course. It would have been insane to ask a child to do such things on screen. The trick was very well done because nobody noticed and nobody notice today either. Another great example was the actor playing Merrin, Max Von Sydow. He was only 44 at the time but he really looks like an elder person.
Still Linda Blair had to do a lot of hard scenes. It wasn´t an easy ride for her and despite the brilliant work she did, she never got the recognition she deserved, like an Oscar nomination.
I wish you had watched it with sound from the movie going into both ears. The sound is such an important part of this movie. It even won the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing.

I think this is not really a horror movie, it has horrible scenes but it’s more about the loss of faith and redemption and it’s 50 years old so no CGI, you must remember when you it came out nobody had seen anything like this, it reminds me of The Godfather as in it takes it time to let us know the characters and builds tension, good reaction though you paid attention which a lot of reactors don’t

i met Linda Blair at an event in Australia a few years back, she's a lovely person - does a lot for animal welfare these days . she signed my Exorcist DVD "to John, Sweet Dreams....?" fun fact - she has an uncredited blink and you'll miss it cameo in Scream
I saw this movie in theatres when it came out it '73.I was 12 years old at the time. There were people holding signs protesting the movie outside because of the language and graphic violence. You must understand there was nothing like this before. During the show some people got up, screamed and ran out. one guy got up and vomited right in the isle. The movie was banned in many towns across the country. Ouja borads became very unpopular after this movie. They do work. Make your own . Draw a diagram and then take a light glass. The spirits do answer questions you couldnt possibly know the answers to try it. Only be sure when done to tell the spirts in a firm voice "To Go"..we never had problems.
Your young so having being exposed to other things u dont find it that scary. This movie was based on a true event but the the victim was a 14 year old boy. The Vatican has since sealed the record so no more is known. Exorcisms continue to this day. Some strange events occured during the filming. one person died and strange fires broke out.
To me this is the most scary movie with ""Alien '79" being the second most.

I saw this when I was 7 or 8 and it scared the **** out of me.
Doctor: "Have you ever known your daughter to swear, to use obscenities?"
Chris: "No, never. She doesn't swear."
Doctor: "Well, she let loose quite a string while I was examining her, Missus MacNeil."
Ryl: "Which is why she should have been in the room."
That's why Chris wasn't in the room. Doctors often want to see how the patient behaves when only other medical people are present, when the patient is not in the presence of possibly inhibiting family-members, when the patient is not in the presence of the one who has essentially said 'Something is wrong with you, and we're going to the doctor to see what to do about it.' It's valuable to be able to _combine_ information about how Regan behaves in the _presence_ of her mother with information about how Regan behaves in the _absence_ of her mother.
The point of that last scene was to end on a happier note and to show life goes on.
I think because I saw this long after it came out I didn’t find it as scary. Being a 90s kid the scares didn’t hold up for me. Still a great movie.
I saw it in 1973 and it scared me so bad. We didn't have movies like that back then. it was rated triple x..
The rats in the attic scene was a weird one. Obviously, there was a gas line running through the attic that dislodged from a mounting bracket which made the rattling sound thinking that rats were the cause of the disturbance. Eventually, the loose bracket caused the line to vibrate enough to break a connection in the line causing a leak. When the actress entered the attic with a lit candle and got close to the gas leak caused the flare up? I love your reaction to this movie and think it was one the best directed films ever.

I think it's because of the age of you guys. You need to remember, when this first came out, there was NOTHING else like it.
Today, we have extremely violent TV shows, films, etc. We've got kids playing computer games where they're blowing peoples heads off.
As a society, we're just so desensitised

I believe it's from a true story that happened in Germany in the 50s or 60s. The girl, Linda Blair, couldn't get many acting jobs after this, kinda cursed! But she should have got an Oscar and lifetime Oscar for this! The mom is Ellen Burstin, with many fine acting roles. What she did in Requiem for a Dream, was outstanding!! So many pro tips on this...look up in here, any shorts or documentary on it. It still sets the standard for horror! To put movies up with this I would say first 3 evil dead, drag me to hell( same director 😮) the descent, barbarian, the nun, woman in black, The Thing, The Fly, Alien, the shining, and as good or better than this, hereditary! The old priest was only 42, makeup job. He had some trouble getting roles after this because directors thought he was older! The green puke hit him in the face, it wasn't supposed to but the director had it happen for a more surprised look on his face! Sometimes the director fired gunshots next to an actor, for A very surprised look on their faces! He kept the room at 40 degrees! The mom was permanently hurt during her fight scene with Reagan! The woman who does the voice was originally uncredited, she didn't want it known it was her! Orson Welles called her the greatest voice actress of all time! She smoked cigs and drank whiskey daily her whole life! Linda had to have 24/7 security for almost a year, people were convinced she was possessed! Basically this movie is a second rematch. Marron found the idol, and the Catholic pendant, in the beginning. In Iraq. How they both got here, I don't know. 'm guessing the pendant was with the idol, to keep it contained. Likely it was this demon, Pazuzu or Paimon. Then his exorcism that lasted 6 months in Africa, it was this demon again. Somehow, the pendant made it's way to the younger priest who wore it for protection and a piece of the idol, made it to this house.this is why the old priest, and this demon knew each other.
Now a good movie kind of same genre would be AUDREY ROSE with Marsha Mason and Anthony Hopkins or The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken and Brooke Adams, Tom Skerritt, Martin Sheen. Good movies for October. Saw this movie as a teenager a few years after it came out, yikes, wasn't ready for it.
Mercedes McCambridge is the voice of the demon. In order to reach a certain tone, she was tied to a chair and fed whiskey and cigarettes until her voice reached a certain level.
Lots never pay attention that when she turns head around and ask do you know what she did. That is the voice of Burt Denning. The director that was first pushed out window.

Hmmm I think you 2 are missing something about the movie. If your younger sis was possessed like that in your house...could you sleep well at all? That demon knows everything about you, and will use it to mentally attack you.

When this came out, I got such a crush on Linda Blair. I must be weird 😂 but you gotta understand we are the same age and I got to go to the drive in and see it
I think this is STILL one of the scariest movies to date, because it is NOT far fetched. Possession s & exorcisms still take place today,and people know this could happen. I'm not talking about looking exactly like the little girl did, or head spinning around, and vomiting 🤮 quarts of vomit. I'm talking about possessions where you are NOT in control of yourself, but by evil entities. Movies like Freddy Krueger, Jason, Michael Myers, where these characters cannot die are not seen as 😱 scary, because people know that cannot be true, but possessions are true,and most likely to happen out in the real world.

You two are still very young. Our movies were original and from a different time. Effects like these are and still amazing. I appreciate how far effects have come, but in the process of CGI, its taken away from the quality as well. To many of the same things. Movies have lost originality and creativity. Not all but some.And The ring, is a remake of the Japanese original Ringu. My mother's and grandparents generation gave us so much. And of course yours did too. All I'm saying is with all of the fancy effects, gizmos, internet and futuristic inventions, don't forget to stop and smells the flowers once in a while, read a book. Play a board game, or go to a movie theatre and watch a movie. P.S. There's nothing wrong with laughter, especially when looking death in the eye, or a horror movie. The mother cursing so much, was interesting, a juxtaposition and a foreshadowing of the invocation of christ and Jesus, during the exorcism.
I read the novel it wasn’t really bout the girl it bout the Demon after the older priest for a rematch that’s why it shows old priest and the demon at the beginning along the younger priest that struggle with his faith the girl was just a bait to get to both priest anyway glad you ladies watch the this amazing movie
This movie is loosely based upon a true story. The true story was a young boy in St. Louis !
I never found The Exorcist to be scary because it was so over the top. It was entertaining for its shocking scenes, but it never felt like any of it was real or possible IMO. Your head is not going to spin all the way around no matter how 'possessed' you are nor are you going to levitate. I do recall when this movie came out though that it freaked a lot of people out. Some would going around saying it was based on a true story which was never true, but it added to the fear for those that believed it. The movie spawned a bunch of magic shows where they would levitate people. Magic shows are a thing of the past now.
You still have 2 more Exorcist movies yet to see.
Most people say skip Exorcist 2 but i think would be interesting to see what you think of it. I'd definitely recommend Exorcist 3.
Heyyy thanks for giving us some quality Halloween season reactions! Probably a lot of people said not to watch it because they watched it on TV at like age 12, sooo yeah as a kid it was really scary xD But now it's a fun watch with friends.
I noted that you laughed thru the first half of the film, but after the Down The Staircase scene, you hardly smiled again.
Laughing at horror is a defense mechanism, like laughing g at a funeral.
I love watching reactions to this movie from people that actually believe this kind of thing can actually happen!! Makes it so much better. One would think that an omnipotent, omniscient god would be able to get rid of “demons”…..all by its self. Since it is all powerful and all. Crazy that it has to rely on a couple of fallible humans to do its dirty work 😏 Maybe demons and the devil don’t exist 🤷♀️…..or a god!!! 🙀🙀
