David Fincher's second feature film, like his first, “Alien 3”, appears to be a kind of dark, nihilistic nightmare. Every image resembles a painting, every location is a metaphor. The director had special set designs developed for the crime scenes, which were symbolically modeled on the respective deadly sins.
When David Mills (Pitt) shoots the serial killer John Doe (Spacey), only John Doe “wins” because that is exactly what he wanted.
What's more, Mills also has to stand trial and goes to prison...
Fincher's dark, yet extremely clever cult shocker set genre standards. 🤩

David Fincher, as he has from here and since, directed the HELL out of this film. Thematically, it's so outside of a typical studio-backed thriller that I'm shocked it was even greenlit. Technically, it's got so much style to match with the absolute darkness in its blood.

There is an alternate ending in the special edition that wasn’t filmed but story boarded where Somerset shoots John Doe instead of Mills. Mills looks at him in shock and Somerset says “I’m retiring anyways” so to spare Mills and to thwart John Doe.

"I just don't think I can continue to live in a place that embraces and nurtures apathy as if it was... virtue." What former idealist hasn't been there? Somerset is right, sadly. People don't want a champion, and if one rises, they'll go the way of Cool Hand Luke, JoJo Rabbit's mom, JFK, and Gandhi, while the mainstream shrugs and gets back to their cheeseburgers, drugs, and TV.
This script hits hard, one jeremiad after another, coming from more than one quarter. I like it almost as much as Silence of the Lambs (I prefer happy endings). Anyhoo, good reaction, Jyn and Ryl! Keep up the good work!

Ryl you speak about "anton" at first i was thinking the movie "Gattiga", then figured it out, you are talking about "No Country for Old men" - and yes Anton had a "code" correct.
Note that Anton gave Lewellen an out via that phone call - basically let me kill you and your wife I'll spare, instead Lewellen got mad and rejected that offer, refusing to admit he was outmatched (unlike the Sheriff - who admitted he was outmatched and retired alive) - resulting in him and his wife being killed by Anton.
Lewellen was no hero in my book, so not broke up over him dying (more broke up over his wife dying) - why? Because i walked into a place with drugs/money and a dying man, and instead of calling the cops right then and there, he takes the money, then 10 hours later goes back to give the gut shot guy water!!!!!!!!!! Gut shot = bleed out. You find the guy alive and call the cops, the guy lives. but Lewellen cared more about the money so did not call the cops and took the money instead.
Lewellen failed the moral test from the start and it cost him his live, the Mexican drug dealers life, and his wife's life.

Ryl - excellent point about Spacey killing an innocent (Mill's Wife) in his plan to have himself killed for Envy (just shows that he was a hypocrite - as a Sumerset noted he enjoyed killing - not forced to do so).
I don't know how your Justice System works in your nation (you are in the Carribian(sp) - many islands/and nations down there -and not sure from which you reside. But here in America we have Juries mostly (unless the acussed agrees with a "plea" or with a judge determining guilt). A Jury would know Mills killed the SOB, and then render Mills "Innocent" via Jury Nullification. Basically the jury would say "ya we know he killed the bastard, but we would have too under the circumstances, so we rule him innocent"........so he can walk free.
So Mill will have to be in county jail for 6 months until his trial, then a 2 week trial, then a 1 day jury rulling, and then would be freed via the jury.

This film reminds you just how important atmosphere and filming on location is, this is not a film you could film in sunny California. (I WAS WRONG, see below)
I'd like to think that this film really made people wise up to the horrors of the world. Lots of sick people like this out there, even if this is a made up film. You can't always be safe and prepared but you can lower the risks.
Your reactions to these types of films, true crime murder mysteries are very interesting.

Mills will probably get a lot of leniency in court because of the circumstances, but of course he will be scarred for life. It is highly unlikely he will recover from this and will most likely spend the rest of his life in mental institutions.

Mills would get a very light sentence due to the circumstances but of course his life is indeed over because of what happened, it's not something he will ever be able to forget nor forgive himself for (if he wouldn't have taken the job and all that). All your points about why it is not his fault, wouldn't really be accepted by him, only the guilt.

Even knowing that this ending was more like a modified Plan B for John Doe, I didnt like the ending years ago cause "Wrath" wasn't killed at the end. Now I think it is even a better ending, cause Wrath (although being a cardinal sin) wasnt killed off in the movie, cause it's the most pure sin of all seven sins. John Doe rewrote the list of the cardinal sins in his view and he is not wrong, Wrath is being used by good and bad people the same way. It causes the most debate, cause nearly everyone can relate in some situations.

The purpose of the killer was to shock the public so that it sticks in the public's minds AND provide a warning to those who sin. He was punishing the first 5 he killed, envy was his sin for which he was wanting Mills to punish him and Mills would be punished for his wrath by being charged in the killing.

Also, we have (supposedly) due process in this country, even evil people like John Doe deserve their day in court according to law. I'm sure mills will get off light, because it was a "crime" of passion, he couldn't be sane in that moment.
