FINALLY...I'm sick of people watching this and thinking Leon is a pedo or taking advantage of Matilda, you two get it. He was nothing but his best to her, they were both fucked up but he never saw her as anything but a daughter figure.
in the orginal script she is supposed to try to seduce him and he turns her down, he is absolutely not supposed to be presented as a pedo.
Its weird that that stuff is even in the film to begin with which was a choice to do so by the filmmakers. There are a ton of adoptive-protector films like this that manage to never touch pdf territory. Made weirder by stuff the director has done and said irl. People are allowed to be weirded out by it if they want.

The "Thelma and Louise" mentioned in the movie was a pair of women who accidentally go on a crime spree. The movie, also "Thelma and Louise", would be a good one for a reaction. A young Bratt Pitt plays a part.

I think the love aspect as more just her coming of age, being a little older mentally than she was due to the way she grew up, falling in love or getting a crush on the person who saved her. Leon loved her more as a father figure IMO.

Omg, yall are weird. He loves her aa a father and she clearly had been physically abused and probably sexually as well. Look at her role models. She sees the adults around her smoking and and sexual etc. She has never been able to be a kid and thinks this is you act. This movie is kind of a rip off the original movie gloria. Except gloria was a woman and the kid was a little boy. The little boy on that movie was a tad younger but he was acting older as well. He kept telling gloria he was a man! They're showing children put in adult situations and how in affected them.

Gary Oldman is a great actor. He’s a villain in The Fifth Element (another Luc Besson flick) and plays Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols in Sid & Nancy. Both are worthy of being reacted to.

Btw, the constant references to 'Beethoven that Gary Oldman's character made in this movie was actually an Easter Egg inside joke since at the same time in 1994 during the filming of this movie, he was also filming the 1994 movie 'Immortal Beloved' in which he played the title role of Ludwig Van Beethoven. That 1994 movie ('Immortal Beloved') is one of the most underrated movies ever....it's very good, and I would suggest that you should definitely check it out. You would probably be one of the first RUclips movie reactors to react to "Immortal Beloved". Without giving away any spoilers, the movie is a historical Rom-Dram-Mystery based on the life of Beethoven. AWESOME MOVIE...and it is actually also my favorite Gary Oldman movies.

I always got the impression that Leon knew she was off limits that way, but he also cared about her and felt responsible for her. Mathilda put him in a very awkward spot though for sure. It's hard to see how it would've had a happy ending even if Leon had survived. She was only going to get older and more mature and it would've gotten messy at some point. Great movie though. Love seeing Gary Oldman playing quirky bad guys.
This movie is french. It was made by Luc Besson. He has written Leon as an alternative to the typical Hollywood assassin. So he is as different from that as possible. That's why he drinks milk, goes to Frank Sinatra movies, takes care of his little plant etc.

Milk, the ultimate sign of innocence, child-like innocence. When a villain drinks milk, it's him consuming innocence killing it. But here Leon, is in many ways a child not knowing about life beyond being a killer. He is in a world where he barely speaks, barely sleeps and like his plant he is always moving, always in a small part of his own world.
Milk. It does a body good.👍

9:00, There is a movie called Gloria that came out in 1980 which inspired this and a few other action movies. However, instead of a male assassin defending an orphaned young girl, it's the reverse of this film.
The title character Gloria (played by the great Gina Rowlands) is a cranky middle aged former gangster's girlfriend who lives down the hall from a family that is wiped out by the mob. The only surviving member is the family's youngest son Phil. Out numbered and out gunned, Gloria has to go on the run with little Phil in tow. Along the way, Gloria discovers depths of grit, courage and love that she never knew she had. One of my favorite lines from the movie is when Gloria gets the upper hand on a young mob henchman and snarls "You are pvnk!! You let a wom@n beat you!"
The movie was a hoot and quite revolutionary for its time as nobody was casting women in their 50's as gun toting bad asses. In 1999, a remake was made starring Sharon Stone.
I was just thinking about that one the other day.
The cast in this was amazing. Gary Oldman is my favorite villain.

This movie is like fine art... it puts you in places that are uncomfortable, to drop your defenses, then hits you with some of the best acting ever. I love this movie. 😊
Virtual Hug. Although I have seen this movie 2 or 3 times, this extended cut is brand new to me. The relationship between Leon and Mathilda in the theatrical version is not as audacious as it is here. This is a different film. Mathilda’s aggressiveness creates a whole new atmosphere.

The North American theatrical release was called "The Professional" and cut out the uncomfortable 'romance' scenes and most of the hitman training scenes. Gary Oldman was great in this as the bad guy, and he's great in "True Romance" (1993), written by Quentin Tarantino, recommended! 👍

Been a long time since I’ve seen this. Such a tragic movie. Natalie Portman was always years beyond her age. Amazing young actress. The “EVERYONE!!!” line is iconic. Great reaction you two.

i absolutely love this movie and am so happy go actually see you guys tear up from first assuming all milk drinkers in movies as being evil (which i've also noticed and def super weird) to finally loving him enough to cry for his plant.. as far as the love between the two, there's two camps of people. people who will claim the director having a troubled past and creating Matildas love for Leon to be something sordid.. but then there's the more psychologically sound idea that as you first mentioned, Leon was a better father to her in just a few hours then her own father had ever been. So keep that in mind, esp when talking about how she needs to grow up and needing her frontal lobe to catch up with her actions.. If you think about your initial reaction, it makes a ton more sense from a girls POV who was living in an overse*ualized family (walking in on her step mom and dad basically doing in the bathroom in the beginning). So she has a very skewed perception of how to be a regular child.. esp when she mentions she was even a better mother to her brother..
Then on Leon's side, he went through that tragedy he never recovered from with his past relationship where she was taken out by her own father, resulting in Leon never allowing himself to ever become close to another female again. So ofc when Matilda comes into his life with her type of personality, it's a clear sign from Leon's initial choking on the milk that he immediately never saw Matilda like that.. even nearly taking her out middle of the first night.
It's beautiful b/c they essentially are two very screwed up people in opposite roles. A overly mature child, Matilda, teaching a childish minded Leon how to read.. relax.. and actually smile again. Their Love was very much grounded in finding a home with eachother as a family duo.. also, The scene with the dress.. when Leon first buys it for her, if you pay attention, it's a very conservative dress.. long sleeved, long skirt, very much made for a child. it was never meant to come across as over-se*ualized.. hence why Matilda initially hated it.
Also interesting fact. a while back, as someone who works in mental health, i was super curious what the pill that Gary Oldman's character took was to make him get all weird like he did.. and i was surprised to find out it's apparently just a form of Xanax to calm him down while he goes on his rampages. I think it's supposed to further explain how he'd be so freaky killing an entire family while talking about Beethoven etc.. but yeah, just an anxiety pill... def surprised me.
and also.. all hail the Ring Trick.. RIP Leon.. he came in as a Professional, he went out as a Professional. 💔
As the movie was starting I was thinking, you ladies are going to love this. This movie deserves a sequel with Portman as the professional.
Keith A. Glascoe the man who played Benny the one standing in the hallway who almost shot his partner in a panic. In the black vest blue shirt. He was a NY firefighter who died rescuing people from the 9/11. He didn't make it out before the collapse of the south tower.
All Luc Besson movies should be watched! Specially Fifth Element, Taken series, Transporter series, Lucy, Big Blue, La Femme Nikita
And don't forget "Anna" (2019). Its like a grown up sequel to Leon, like the Besson produced "Columbiana" (2011) which was supposed to be the real sequel.
@@x_trio_3_po333 I liked "Anna", (loved the way the story is told), "Lucy" is got too but my favourite is "Valerian and The City of a Thousend Planets" which is more comparable to "Fith Element".The newest is "Dogman" (2023) unfortunatly I didn't get the chance to see it.
I didn't remember Gary Oldman's line about Beethoven, it is really funny to me that he says that, because he plays Beethoven in the movie "Immortal Beloved" - he's amazing in it and disappears in to the role.
I've seen other people react and not pick up at all on the romance between Leon and Matilda and how manipulative and toxic she is lmfao. Glad you both saw her tactics.

A bit of info: the actress playing the blonde girl seen in the opening sequence was 15 or so at the time and was in a romantic relationship with Luc Besson, the writer/director, who was in his 30s. They had initially met when she was 12. She had his child at 16, and years later wrote a book about their relationship and how she felt that it informed Mathilda and Leon's in the film. The book was never published.
There was also originally a scene in the script which expanded on Mathilda saying she wants Leon to take her virginity and Leon refusing, but thankfully Natalie Portman's mother objected and it was cut.
It is uncomfortable knowing that such a brilliant film was at least partly inspired by creepy real life events.
But anyway, it is a great movie about 3 completely broken people. As is evident in the way it had both of you guys tearing up at once - something I'd never expected to see!

You got some of your facts mixed up. The actress's name is Maïwenn. She started her relationship Luc Besson in 1988. She was 15 at the time. By the time she appeared in "Leon," she was 17 or 18.

I see the other comments under this video where they talk about the awkward love situation and have no clue of how true it is. I salute you sir for speaking the truth!
The movie is a master piece. If you start with real-life and let that be the lense in which you interpret the events, motivations, context of the film, then in my opinion you are missing out on a lot. Particular the subject of abuse and growing up and the need of proper parental caring.
Talking outside the fiction. In most countries in Europe 15 is legal age for anyone to have a consensual relationship even with someone older than they are. I think these type of laws are in place for teenagers to have a grown up relationship with teenagers.
I am not saying it is alright, but it is a director from Europe with a European mindset, and Americans have a different mindset and laws from state to state is very different too. Regardless I think that a relationship, especially between an older man and a teenager of legal age, in Europe would be morally condemned in almost all cases. As was the case with Besson.

Thelma and Louise is about two women who decide to go on a roadtrip to escape their boring and miserable lives (they are waiters and the other one has kind of a jerk as a husband), but the whole thing slowly escalates into a streak of one disaster after another, but their friendships grows stronger, the deeper they get into problems. They end up being fugitives, sought after by law enforcement officers. The ending is as epic as it is shocking. Strong recommendation!

This is one of those movie like Million Dollar Baby, that what seems wrong is actually right. And what seems right is actually wrong. Its hard to sometimes see these things from an external view, unless you were there and did that and it was a part of you. These types of movies expose that.
If you like this movie and have seen this yet, I recommend "The Boondock Saints".
The reason for the milk is that it is they used to think that milk was good for ulcers. Ulcers can be caused or made worse by stress. According to WebMD, milk can actually make ulcers worse.

I think if Leon had survived, their relationship would have somewhat balanced out. Like he would be a father figure and she would reveive the (platonic, parental) love that she needed to heal from all the trauma she experienced in her short life. But also she would probably still be his apprentice and learn to be a proper killer which I guess brings it's own trauma^^
To me it always feels like yes, he is also confused about their relationship, but that's mostly because he has been alone all his life and just doesn't know how to process it. But at the end of the day, he is not attracted to her in that way. I think the actor, Jean Reno, made it a point to try and not make it creepy from his character's position. Like you said, Leon is like a child himself in a lot of ways. He's pure... I mean as pure as you can be when you kill people for a living^^

Gary Oldman (the creepy guy) at his psycho best in here.
Most people seem to love this movie and it's in IMDB's top 50 highest rated movies of all time. It's only on social media that you have a vocal minority complaining about the director's intentions. Those people are right about the director, but it's very easy to separate the art from the artist. Luckily you can view the relationship as platonic and fatherly.
Milk is thought of as nutrition for infants and children. We don't associate milk with an adult drink. It's become a common trope the truly tough guy doesn't care what anyone else thinks about what he drinks, so he drinks milk because it's what he wants.

We as humans are the only species on earth who drink another species' milk. Thus drinking milk sets us apart from other mammals. What it signifies with Leon is probably his child-like innocence contrasted with his cold blooded killer talent. It humanizes him to the viewer, like his innocent love for old classic movies. Instead of a love for violent films like "Scarface", or "The Godfather", or "Dirty Harry". Films you would normally expect a professional hit man to watch.
