This is an ancient Mongolian battle chant, many battle chants sound similar. There are several Nordic bands who perform battle chants, that's probably why it sounds similar. The singing is traditional throat singing, and is done completely without autotune :) The Hu are AMAZING! So glad you found them!

This is a brilliant song even before you know what's actually being said, when you know it hits even deeper, I definitely get norse vibes but also a bit of the Haka, in the space of 5 days I went from hearing them for the first time to having a ticket to see them in June, 100% a fan.

No it isn't. This was taken from a WW2 movie back around the 1940s. Even though Mongolia wasn't in the war, they kept the Japanese from invading the Soviet Union. The Japanese were too terrified of them to cross their land. So, the Mongols were seen as heroic by the WW2 veterans.

If I remember correctly this is based on a War Chant of the Golden Horde (the part of the Mongol Empire that conquered Russia and scared the living shit out of Medieval Europe).
All of their songs are based on old Mongol poems, folk stories, songs, legends, etc. and these guys inspired a lot of other folk-metal bands across the world and it's amazing to see!

I can't find the significance of lion with blue mane except that it is featured in Tibetan Buddhism which over half of Mongolians practice. All of The Hu's lyrics consist of Mongolian legends, poetry, history, and the preservation of their land and culture. They don't have a bad song yet so if you want, just randomly pick one and go! The main instruments are morin khuur (two string) and tov suur (three string). It is throat singing, which is traditional to several cultures. Wonderful reaction, thank you!

I have this CD. Every single song on it is phenomenal. They all have a tribal feel. And it's all in Mongolian LOL so I don't understand the words. But I don't need to. The music speaks for itself.
The sound they are making with their voices is called throat singing. It is a common sound in Mongolian music and traditional folk songs.
They just bring their own brand of metal into the mix and it's amazing to hear.

It’s such a tribal feel to it…. The chanting. I think it resonates with some sort of ancient part of our minds. My coworkers have asked me not to listen to this particular song before i go into work because I get so pumped up and just go off the walls with adrenaline. There’s something to the beat and chant, I swear by it. I guarantee if you put this into the workout playlist you’ll lift, run or press more. It’s just an adrenaline pumping song. Then once you read the actual lyrics…. Throw on another 50 pounds, cut a few seconds off your record time… Hu, Hu, Hu!!!!

The horsehead fiddle is an instrument invented long ago from implements already on hand. They used a long handled ladle, and horse tail hairs for the strings. When they were done playing, it was easily disassembled, and again ready to use for cooking. It is impressive how well they can play, even blowing away the talents of professional violinists, with just the two strings!

  • @RLhole68

The blue mane is in reference to the blue sealed Mongol tribes that Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Kahn) untied under his banner and then proceeded to build the Mongolian empire which stretched from China to almost western Europe, not all done by him personally but he started it all. In a short version of the history.

Tibetan and Buddhist folklore had myths of the Blue Maned Lion. Kind of betting the Hu is referring to Tibetan folklore more than Buddhist as they are descendants of one of the best and most feared mounted armies in history. And what it brings to warriors in combat has determined who ends up the conqueror and who is the conquered more than once.
In Tibetan folklore, the Snow Lion is a mythical animal that resides in the Eastern Himalayas. The Snow Lion has a youthful, vibrant energy and a natural sense of delight. Its fur is pure white and its flowing mane is the color of Tibetan turquoise. The Snow Lion symbolizes fearlessness and victory over all obstacles.

It's not about going to war! - It is more like; Don't mess with us, then we obliterate you!. - There are many layers to it though, as the Protector, the Garuda is involved also. - It's very old and it have both old culture and deep roots into Buddhism also. - If your view is towards eternalism, you are totally wrong. If your view is towards nihilism, you are even more wrong. - Not only do you have to wrap your head around what Buddhism really is about, you also need to know some history from that time. The whole Khan history and certainly not the way Khan is portrait in the western history books. - One line in the song give a very important clue: If you come with bad intention, we will obliterate you and together with the rest, it also states that, no matter how the enemy appear, it will be met by the correct antidote. - Genghis Khan was not the only Khan. Some of them had a very close and strong relations with some of the greatest Buddhist masters at that time. - The average Joe have no clue about what the text is about. Even a beginner on the Buddhist path like me, who have studied and practiced for 25 years, still have long way to go, before really getting all the details right. - It is so much more deep and profound than you can imagine. - Together with many of the other comments, I hope you get a feel, that this is so much more than you can understand. I will actually say; It is a great blessing that you even get to hear it! But it takes a razor sharp mind and very openminded person, to get that understanding. - Glad you liked and enjoyed it though! 😎❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

Those are not dragons. Those are one-horned snow leopards. And it is metal for sure.

I like this band a lot. Glad to see more reactions to them. The beginnings of some of their videos are like mini movies. just have to sit tight and wait for the action to begin. They are awesome. And that is coming from someone older and not a fan of metal music at all. But these guys I will listen to.

Okay so the norse didnt throat sing. Chat, scream, sing yes but not throat sing. Bands like wardruna are nordic inspired and primarily heathen (germanic neopagan) music and have incorporated throat singing but throat singing itself as a cultural singing type is turko-mongol exclusively.

Exactly, as someone who's grown up listening to Mongolian and Tuvan music of different genres. I can tell you, these neo-viking / pagan music most definitely drew inspiration from them.
