Thanks a million man... I was smashing my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get these door knobs off... bought an old house built in the early 80s and the previous owners never updated anything!!!!
......why put new crappy stuff on . No updating for me ! I'm renovating my old farmhouse . We saved the doors and knobs . They are quality , not junk li,e they make today . Sargent 6 line locking knobs are very difficult to pick . They don't wear out like junky new ones . My inside has them and the old " real " doors . It would take criminals a long time to break into my outer doors and the locking indoors type , is nigh invincible ! I'll take old thing over new any day......solid construction with real oak !
Thank you so much for making this video. My home was built in '62. It was a challenge trying to remove the old knobs until I came across your video ! It made the chore much, much simpler!
My door knobs look very much like the one in your video. They are however, interior knobs and the knobs on both sides are the same in appearance. I don't have the tabs you show in your video and have no idea how to remove that knob in order to install the newer ones I bought recently. If you have any idea of how I can remove these knobs I'd appreciate any feedback you can send me.
Without your video, I would have given up because the plate only partially came off, and of course there were no visible screws! I kept trying and found them. In the end I got two of those ancient, worn-out doorknobs replaced tonight. Thank you for the advice and encouragement!
Sooooo helpful!! Thank you!! I'm having to learn how to do all this stuff by myself so I couldn't figure out how to get these old doorknobs off! My hero!...
They are Quality. Mine are from 1940 and they all work perfectly . New stuff is junk , that can get picked easily . Not the old Sargent line 6 knobs . Wife said save doors during renovating my old farmhouse . Carpenter wanted to do all preying doors , made of wood particles , and not real wood . Quality for my family . 3 Carpenter have quit , excuse they don't know that new doesn't mean better !
You saved me my guy! The door that led to the only bathroom and our baby's room messed up enough that we couldn't open it without taking the door handles off. Haha, good times. Thanks a bunch!
You are the bomb-I have tried every tool and non-tool to press the the button in the hole. Nothing! I am going to try your great method shown here and I feel sure this will work for me. Thanks so much!
Many thanks for this video Dave. I could not press those darn indentation, worked on that for 10mn+. Your trick at 1:50 is awesome. Made the job immediate!
I was missing just popping the cap off to expose the screws mine doesn’t have the notch cut the whole assembly was just slightly off kilter and I popped it off
Removing my doorknob has been a nightmare. I was able to use the screwdriver to bend and cut the top thin metal off. However there is another plate made of iron from Fort Knox I guess and now I stuck again.
I need help. This is the precise door knob I'm trying to get off but the tab on the bottom is STUCK!? - so I can't pop it UP to get the actual door knob attached to the other side - OFF.
Thank you for showing how you did this. I had to replace an old 70's door knob because evicted tenants broke the matching knobs. Mine had a button to get knob off, but the plate needed to be snapped off with a small pry bar.
The house were in was built in the 30s and one of them was even older than this style, no levers or buttons:/ i beat it with a hammer and it eventually broke off

That is really nice, I wish all knobs were made like this. The non visible screws are a nice touch.

Thank you for showing the quick release again at the end
I found the notch but pushing a screwdriver in there didn't make the knob pop off. It left a pretty big gash in the wood, though.
Bro thank you. This definitely worked for me. I had almost given up
Too late; I got all hulk angy at mine and took a recipracating saw to mine! 😊
Thank you! I was about to have a hissy trying to figure out how to remove my old doorknob that doesn't lock.

Who knew lol thanks for showing this brother it had me baffled
Removing my doorknob has been a nightmare. I was able to use the screwdriver to bend and cut the top thin metal off. However there is another plate made of iron from Fort Knox I guess and now I stuck again.
So this technique is not working on my door knob. Any suggestions??
