The Problem with Steven Seagal

  • I want to talk about the problem with Steven Seagal because Steven Seagal is a bit of an enigma in the world of martial arts.
On the one hand, he's managed to become an extremely accomplished martial artist. He's known as the first American to run an Aikido dojo in Japan, and he was one of the biggest action movie stars in the world in the early 90s.
Despite all of his accomplishments, it doesn't take very much effort to find a lot of really bad stuff about Seagal whether it's his diva attitude on set, some weird stuff he's said to people, jokes about his appearance, or a long list of allegations made by women who have worked with him.

I started in the martial arts as teen in 1977 in a dojo that had multiple arts, a version of karate that was a "mixed" style, as well as black belts in Aikido, Judo and Ed Parker's Kenpo teaching their style, and some level of cross training in other things as well.
    Now I do BJJ.
The old days were interesting times, but there wasn't wide understanding of what is effective in martial arts, and much of the traditional stuff isn't very effective. The attitude of "my kung fu is stronger than your kung fu" was a real thing back then. Now you get in the ring and prove it, and we know what works there. Back then it was easier to fool yourself about what worked. But also more insecurity about your martial art, doubts based on not using it in full force situations, which in turn would lead to confrontational attitudes (even dojo "wars").
I post this because it probably factors into Segal, who's primary style isn't effective. IIRC he also has black belts in karate and Judo. The karate likely was non-contact. Judo is clearly legit of course. But his fight skills (at his peak) are nowhere near what some might have once thought, and somewhere in his head he has to know this.

Steven Seagal's aikido in his early films was known as "street aikido", more closely resembling aiki-jitsu which is the forerunner of aikido, it's a more aggressive style that looks better in movies. I took aikido lessons about 20 years ago for about 6 months and it was much more relaxed than Seagal's moves, but it was a great experience I'll never forget.

From my own studies of the martial arts, my estimation of aikido is essentially my estimation of tai chi, and similar "martial" arts. They borrow some absolutely credible forms and foundational philosophies from older or similar styles, and maybe have some close combat applications in selective rare circumstances. Their true benefit, however, was a mild melding of physical exertion and meditative energy - excellent for maintaining physical health and generally helpful for centering the spirit.
Would you agree with me there? I've never practiced aikido, only watched and read about it. With my above analysis in mind, it seems kind of offensive for Seagal to project an entirely different energy when he uses "aikido" - not just directly aggressive, but undertaken as a combat sport, without much of that contemplative attitude I mentioned before.

But when he began to display a lot of arrogance, belligerence, disrespect, & the horrible stories of how he allegedly abused & terrified women, I came to the conclusion that this man is a POOR example of a martial artist, because the purpose of the arts is to obtain DISCIPLINE. I enjoy their movies." That's all he had to say. So simple.

I met and was around Mr. Seagal (S) briefly in 1998 and a few other times since. I don't know anything about his legitimacy, his career, or his later life. I was trying then to do a large documentary about the Buddhist diaspora, In a brief exchange, he agreed to voice my documentary after seeing a script, Around that time he had become a student of several Buddhist masters; one prominent teacher of him via a standard methodology foumd him as TULKU, and Buddhist Terton (Treasure Finder.) Although he was named by a very high rimpoche as a very high modest master, he took a lot of flak from that label as well as his unusual connection between his movies and his Buddhist role. None of the pundits criticizing him then made mention of what his Buddhist discovery meant, which was very serious and important to the American Buddhist hierarchy at the time.
When I was in LA, he invited me to his home there and I waved to Kelly Lebrock who was walking through the room with their baby. S. was very cordial to me and reiterated his interest to voice my movie; I saw him sometime after that when HH the Dalai Lama was teaching in Bloomington, America. S. gave a brief Buddhist teaching after that event and was again quite cordial to me.
I made a smaller movie and lost track of S.
The connection with his co-producer Nasso and Mafia connections hit the newspapers and S. fulfillrd some contractual movie obligations which did not help his career and he went to television.

I remember walking in one morning and he was watching a VHS tape(remember those??damn!) with a couple other guys i knew, of Steven Segal showcasing his Aikido skills at a martial arts tournament. When i asked our teacher if he was seriously any good? He looked me straight dead in the eyes in his calm cool and collected way we all knew him as and said, he's better than seriously good and could F up anyone hands down. When i chuckled and asked our teach how do you know from watching a VHS tape, he said because he was the one recording that tape at that tournament, and that he and his Jiu jitsu students got to train with Segal. I knew then Segal was no joke because our teacher was no joke when it came to MMA b4 there ever was a UFC. Not to mention Segal was married to Kelly LeBrock from the flick 'Weird Science'. Thank you for sharing your own skills and point of view, but here’s my response to your criticisms of Segal and Aikido. I studied Aikido for 11 years and the techniques themselves are not ineffective, because they are used and imitated in other martial arts, such as Hapkido, MMA, and by Bruce Lee himself, and he referenced it in an interview. The only problem with it is that you need to train to a very high level to start using it as a whole in real situations - like Segal. Aikido gradings are carried out by a team of judges, and their advice is referred to by whoever is giving the grade, so even if his sensai had fallen asleep, it wouldn't have made any difference. Personally I don't have much time for Me Too accusations, backed up by little or no evidence, just look at Johnny Depp. Photos of people making mistakes in public are easy enough to get if paparazzi follow them around for long enough, people bump into others all the time. Criticizing a martial art style that you've never studied in any depth, and clearly have no understanding of, does not speak well for your knowledge of martial arts in general. There are several schools of Aikido, so his style may seem “unconventional.” Unfortunately, making these kind of character assassinations of a big martial arts star only makes you look jealous. Nobody is a saint, but Steven Segal has made proactive stands on law and order and the environment, which is more than many stars. He's modestly admitted he always had a problem with Aikido as he's tall, so it's difficult for him to lower his center of gravity, for one thing. Now he's a fat, much older man, it’s easy to laugh, but he keeps evolving his skills and has inspired a lot of people, including me, on their martial arts journey, and trained others such as Anderson Silva. Steven Segal is not a monster, especially to anyone who really understands Aikido. I’d really like to see you go up against him, you might learn something.

This was quite entertaining and mostly spot on. WRT his secret techniques: I practiced throughout Japan from 1983 thru 2004. Different dojo have different emphasis. My first dojo in Yamaguchi, Japan taught technique that was “earlier in the evolution” of Aikido. Somewhat more direct, more combative, and with more atemi (strikes). By contrast, Hombu dojo in Tokyo is more flowing, less direct, more abstract and with few if any atemi. Fundamentally the same techniques though. The former is more directly persuasive though while the later is more refined and aspirational.

WHEN SEAGAL'S FILM "WHO DID BOBBY LUPO" CAME OUT WHERE HE HAD A WEIRD ITALIAN ACCENT, I WAS OUTTA-THERE. MY INITIAL THOUGHT OF THE FILM WAS: "WTF"?. HE IS A SEVERE NARCISSIST ON AN OTHER WORLDLY LEVEL. AGAIN, A WELL PRESENTED COMMENTARY ON A REALLY STRANGE PERSON (SEAGAL).

Hi there’s some wrong info in your video. Seagal said in official interview that he has never spoken to Bruce Lee nor fought him. He knew Dan for long time, he has only seen Bruce in person for a few time at most, but never spoken to him. This is from his official interviews. Not sure why you keep saying Seagal says this and that negative things without video segment where he said what you claimed he had said. His 7th Dan is no joke he did an collab with a Karate MMA RUclipsr where he demonstrated accuracy of pressure points in person. Also, he countered Labell choke hold in a split second where Labell literally “flew” 3 feet into the air. This was also from an official interview with first hand witness during a filmset.

Honestly, whenever I see someone defending him as a martial artist, I just internally chuckle at that person. Believe whatever junk you want, but I ain't buyin'!

Prince, this title is misleading. "the problem with steven seagull" Really?
It should read. "The problems with steven seagal." That is more accurate. Thanks.

Man, a lot of people seem to dislike Seagal. He really seems to be UNDER SEIGE all the time. I mean its not like he thinks hes ABOVE THE LAW or something. If words could kill he would be HALF PAST DEAD........GLIMMER MAN.

We all have problems. To dwell on the imperfections of others takes valuable time away from our attempts to correct our own glaring faults. I certainly have many. How about you?

This guy knows no bounds, even though he could be dismantled with simple fact checks.
I'm surprised nobody calls him out when they do an interview.
He went so far as telling a reporter, back in the 90s, that he had the ability of healing people. He claimed that by watching him on film or TV, those that get it, understand by a very subtle look or movement, and those that don't get will never know.

I guess people tolerate him because he is so entertaining making a fool of himself.
