Awesome Video! I did my research and you are correct about this. I do want to add that John Little mention that Bob Wall said that after Joe Lewis accused Bruce Lee about his wife, Bruce Lee came out of his house and told Joe Lewis let's go MF. Joe Lewis had a chance to fight him but he didn't. Louie Delgado sparred with Bruce Lee and he said he could not do anything with him he was baffled. It amazes me that people think Bruce Lee couldn't fight. It is Ridiculous, he was way ahead of his time. Thanks for posting this and thanks for telling facts and not fiction like Beerdy does.

@@user-eo8qu4pl5f well a friend of mine spoke to Joe Lewis and he told him that Bruce Lee called him a Punk. Bruce Lee had a quick temper and was not afraid of nobody. But it was Joe Lewis that accused him of getting fresh with his wife. He realized that he was wrong and that was the end of their relationship.

I read they had this conversion on a phone call, Bob Wall wasn't there, so he wouldn't know what happened between Joe and Bruce, so whatever truly happened is only known to Joe and Bruce and Joe's wife cause she was apparently listening to the conversation

Even another podcast a Bruce Lee biographer he mentioned Bruce fought Joe Lewis after Joe hurt one of his students and Bruce went full speed and dismantled Joe and Joe couldn't even touch Bruce. After that they stayed friends and Joe Lewis realized Bruce was on another level.
That's not what Joe said. Until it's confirmed by unbiased witnesses (I.E. not Bruce's students or buddies), it's unproven.

That's funny, I was thinking the same exact thing. Nor only that, why didn't they ever challenge Bruce to a match? Not only could they have made boat loads of money for a match like that but think about where their careers would have went if they beat him.

It's hard not to believe there was some sort of superior skill level, especially when top-tier fighters confirm the skill level of Bruce Lee.

@@cuzz63 Joe Lewis regarded Bruce Lee as the greatest martial artist that ever lived & was the fastest man to have stood in front of him, he described Lee as incredibly powerful, hitting as hard as a heavyweight & had an inner conviction.
Lewis would often joke with his students saying he knew what real Jeet Kune Do was & how hard Bruce Lee hit as Lee nailed him, incidentally Joe Lewis was the only world champion who would refer to himself as a student of Bruce Lee.

I'm sure Joe Lewis sparred with Bruce before training with him, because as you said, Joe knew he was good and was already a tournament champion. He was not going to train with someone who had not proven himself to Joe. My first Kenpo teacher played with Lewis in the tournament days and got cracked ribs. He said Lewis only had one speed, full. His top black belt later (1990's) had Lewis in for seminars a few times. When they played he said Lewis was using some kind of rhythm that was hard to deal with, and he thinks he learned it from Bruce. He said his way of sparring was completely different from the early tournament days (backfist, side kick). Lewis, Norris, Bob Wall, all these guys were black belts with egos; it is natural they would not like admitting Bruce beat them in sparring, but why else would they have trained with him.
And why would wealthy people in Hollywood pay Bruce for lessons?
That's not the reason at all.
A small fighter that you'll easily beat can still be more technical than you.
Lots of people who beat their masters still took lessons from them.
Speed is not the only thing that matters.

Those guys were already established world champions when they began training with Bruce Lee, do you think they would have wasted their time with Lee had he been a mere finger painter & spouting philosophy? Think about it....
Chuck Norris has always made very clear that he was not a student of Lee. Joe Lewis was just riding his coat tails looking for a movie career. Mike Stone was also not a student of Lee, he had his own martial arts career.
Lee at that time was a big name in the movie industry and martial arts fighters, not getting any payment in those days, liked to network with Ilo for opportunities. Lee did not have any deep knowledge of martial arts nor any high level in anything. You mistake open mindedness and casually exchanging some ideas about martial arts between afficinados for adoration and apprenticeship.
It was his position and popularity they were interested in. This still happens today. Many champion fighters have the ambition for a movie career. Mike Tyson, GSP, Connor McGregor, etc etc. They need the right networks for that and piggyback on the influence of established movie makers.

@@siddified If you see Lee's diaries you will see multiple entries and their names and times with things they are going to work on. At this time Lee was a teacher. Why would he have given so many free lessons? Why would these big time champions visit this little Chinese guys house over long periods of time if there was nothing to learn?

Stone and Lewis could’ve been in Norris’ shoes if they weren’t so cocky. Norris was a much nicer person and got along well with Bruce. Stone was a brawler who fought in touch point karate tournaments, but intentionally hurt opponents by punching them as hard as he could. He was the one who stole Elvis’ wife Priscilla.
Mike Stone doesn't seem to be as popular as Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis, even though he's still living AND has a RUclips channel.
My channel has taken a hit since my daughter started walking - I'm always chasing after her instead of reading/writing/filming/editing. When I get back to where every other video gets 500k+ views, I'll look at a Mike Stone video, but there's not as much controversy around Mike Stone.
If anything, people might be surprised that, despite what Joe says, I think Bruce viewed Mike Stone as the best of those 3 guys.
I DO have an upcoming video about why Bruce shouldn't be compared to the Karate champs of his era - I might be able to work in something about Mike Stone in that video.
@@GoldenbellTraining I have seen it thnx. Strange thing is that there is no old action tournament footage available of Stone, like there is of Norris and Lewis. So I haven’t seen Stone fighting. His image only is formed by anecdotes other fighters told about him.
Mike Stone is now an author focusing on philosophy and spirituality. I think he is writing on one about him and his relationship with Priscilla Presley. And hopefully he includes how Elvis allegedly tried ro put a hit on him I hope he writes one on his relationship with Bruce

If you look at the name on the back of Joe's gi, it clearly says "Tracy's". I was an instructor with Tracy's Karate during that period when Joe worked for them and represented them in tournaments. He also gave seminars for instructors. In those he taught techniques that he learned from Lee. That's the truth.

Bruce didn't believe in point fighting that's not real. And like Jim kelly said Bruce Lee was untouchable. Chuck Norris wasn't beating Bruce. And damn sure Bob Wall wasn't. In a sanctioned tournament, Lewis would stand a much better chance, but in an actual fight on the street, Lee was unstoppable with that quickness.
As usual Prince, you bring the truth and they can't handle it just like Chuck Norris and the late Joe Lewis. Bruce was a little Chinese guy who couldn't get movie and TV roles because of discrimination. Kareem said he and Bruce talked about the racism they faced. Even after all these years, Chuck can't tell the truth about Bruce Lee. How he boasted about being a champion and Bruce was an actor. If Bruce was alive he would not have stuck his chest out as he did. According to Cheung the Wing Chung master Bruce did send him a letter stating that he sparred with and beat Chuck. These guys couldn't take the facts. Now Michael Jai White, don't get me started on how he says because of size he would kill Bruce. You're supposed to be a martial artist man, size doesn't matter. That's the reason Bruce had students of all sizes because that's real. I trained with Larry Hartsell who told me great things about Bruce including the chopstick and rice thing. Keep it up, Prince!

I wholeheartedly believe Jim Kelly when he said he knew the karatekas Bruce fought and Jim had the integrity of a real master and refused to mention any names, even though he was possibly already sick at the time and knowing he would probably die he still refused to mention names lest these famous karatekas felt ashamed or inconvenienced. Now that is integrity.
I don't doubt Jim Kelly either. I also don't doubt that Lee ever fought or sparred with high level boxers or Muay Thai fighters.

@shel0016 Please. There were numerous Japanese and Chinese teams that went to Thailand in the 60s and early 70s to compete against Muay Thai. Muay Thai is a brutal sport and the training equally brutal. Please advise when Lee ever encountered the kind of contact and ferocity demonstrated in any of main Bangkok stadiums.
I respect and acknowledge Bruce Lee but 1960s sport karate fighters are not the same as professional Muay Thai fighters.

@guts7958 I'm amazed that anyone living today is not aware of Muay Thai and the difference between it and 1960s sport karate. They are simply different animals.
IMO, the martial artist that people should be looking at from the 60s and 70s is Benny Urquidez. Urquidez certainly could have and did fight stadium caliber fighters. In addition, I think he could have probably transitioned over to MMA if he had been 10 years younger.
going by the footage in the video Joe Lewis contradicted himself. First he said he didnt spar with Bruce Lee then he said he did when he mentioned Bruce hitting him. The interviews others have given about Bruce not being a real fighter make no sense either
Lewis openly referred to Bruce Lee as the greatest, describing him as the fastest man to have stood in front of him, saying he was a very powerful & gifted martial artist.
He talks about doing drills with Bruce and that's when he got hit. Drills are not the same as sparring.

i was but a wee lad in the days of Bruce, couldn't get enough of watching his movies, i found them funny more than anything, due to the broken English subtitles, truly a great fighter and technician, never knew him personally, but many talk well of him
I was living in Los Angeles and studying Go Soko Ryu under Shihan (now Soke) Takayuki Kubota during the Bruce Lee days. I casually asked one of my Japanese instructors what he thought about Mr. Lee. His response was exceptionally caustic. I was at that point in my life unaware of the hostility between Japan and China during WW II. He basically told me to go study with Bruce if that was my goal. (I didn't, and never brought up the subject again.).
I eventually mastered Bruce Lee's 3 inch punch (the one inch punch was beyond my capabilities, even after nearly 30 years of training). I demonstrated the technique to a class of mine, and knocked down 5 young men with one punch. I had the lead man cover his stomach with a phone directory as protection. Even I was impressed, even though it was the only technique of his that I was good at.
I really miss those days.

The best is back in his space. a man that I respect because he does the research and thoroughly. Proof? I'm a fan of Street Fighter and even I didn't know Joe Lewis was the inspiration for Ken Masters. That's impressive. I know of Joe Lewis because of my late big brother. He talked about him and said he was really damn good
Cool to read someone mentioned the Street Fighter franchise. I am a huge fan of it since 1992, playing SF 2 on Amiga 500 was so funny :). I found out this Lewis-Masters thing on Ken's wiki page 2-3 years ago, never knew it before. But of course wiki wasnt around in the 90s, no smartphones, no internet, nothing.
But there is something about Ken which was also new to me and not many people know it. Yes Lewis was the inspiration for him, but still Ken is only 1/4 american, he is 3/4 japanese. And he isnt a caucasian/white guy like Lewis, he looks more asian. He only dyed his hair blond since his youth as his parents wanted to divorce, he wanted them to stay together and became a rebel, dying the black hair blond was a way.
And Ryu is based on Masutasu "Mas" Oyama.
But yeah, Street Fighter is one of the best franchises ever. This game was the real start for 1-1 duel fighting games.

And it does make sense what you said about Ken because when you look at him, he always has black eyebrows. For someone that is a blonde, you aren't going to have anything outside of that color and the brows always match the hair color. Makes me want to go play some Street Fighter 6 later 😂
@@TheDumontShow Sure :). I didnt know most of this too. In the 2000s and 2010s I wasnt so interested in the franchise anymore, but for some reasons's I found the interest back about 1-2 years ago. And there were indeed many things I didnt know.
What I also didnt know is that Guile's wife Julia and Ken's wife Eliza are sisters, so you can basically say Guile and Ken are like family now, since their wifes are sisters.
And you are right about the eyebrows. Funny is in the first SF game from 1987, Ken had black eyebrows and brown eyes. In SF2 too. But in the 1994 movie starring Van Damme as Guile, the actor who potrayed Ken, Damian Chappa, is caucasian with blond hairs and blue eyes.
And after the movie came out, the Americans did a cartoon about the franchise, and there Ken suddenly was caucasian with blue eyes.
Since then, some times he has blue and sometimes brown eyes.

Good video and thanks for not speaking a mile-a-minute. I'd found with American tourists, back in the '80s, that whenever I talked to them (I was a barman in the family pub), and I talked to everyone when I could, the first thing that Americans would start with 'I', as in 'I did this' and it often continued that way... painfully.
I imagine those that spoke against Bruce were doing that same thing; how great they were themselves, especially if they didn't think there was anyone that could refute their stories after Bruce was gone. But... I wasn't there, so maybe I'm wrong.

Bruce Lee was the best and never has been outdone by anyone. I doubt anyone ever will be better than he was. May he rest in peace.
The thing about Bruce is that he was that good but it's unbelievable to people because they can't accept he was really that good. But all you have to do is look at his movies. The camera can't even keep with his punches and kicks in the frame. That alone is proof.
If you watched any footage of Lee and still think he's all that great, you simply know nothing about martial arts or fighting.

I find it interesting that Bruce ways are similar to Miyamoto Musashi text. Did Bruce study Musashi's work? When you look at them both they are very similar, well to me at least. ^_^
Back in the very early 1970s I had a School Teacher , that competed in some of those Karate tournaments I Think back, in the late 1960s to early 1970s , he was a Black Belt in a Karate Style I don't hear much about these days , I don't even know if it still exist ? After this Comment I will google and see , but he was the person that got me interest in Karate and martial arts , well before i forget the Style it is called American Style Karate . I really Love seeing a Channel that tells the facts , and I believe that your channel does .
I don't know his name, but I have read (or watched) something about the creator of American Style Karate. I may have talked about him in a video debunking some of Beerdy's nonsense. I can’t find the clip anymore but there was a video that Joe talked about Bruce calling him to cast as colt in Retun Of The Dragon. Joe said he turned it down because he couldn’t vision being beaten by Bruce being karate fighting champion of the world. That came straight out of his mouth.
Before I started actually reading about Bruce, I believed this, but it's not true. Joe Lewis never spoke to Bruce again after 1969, and "Way of the Dragon" originally wasn't going to have a "Colt" character.
Unless Joe was lying then I can’t say but I really did saw a video clip where Joe was explaining he got a call from Bruce to play the colt. He explained he turned it down because in the movie he was to lose to Bruce and that didn’t sit well with him being a world champion. Like I said unless Joe was just lying then I can’t say but he said it on video himself.

@@guts7958 According to the video interview he did, he said he turned it down because Bruce was to win and that didn’t sit well with him being world champion of the world. Bruce and they had that bad falling out but I think they could still interacted like men. You can see a lot of Joe’s interviews he’s got nothing but good praises for Bruce and not bad mouthing him.

Thats one thing with Bruce.....he's just too fast. That why I laugh when MJW says he would beat Bruce. Bruce has been handing guys their @$$es who were bigger then him. I'm not saying Bruce is going to walk right through MJW but I think he would come out on top. People were lucky that Bruce didn't use his finger gabs or hits to the throat. Bruce being a good guy about getting into fights kept them hidden so his opponents wouldn't get a bad rep. I'm telling you straight up. Michael Jai White isn't near as good as Bruce. I saw MJW demonstrate his skill. Nowhere as good as Bruce. MJW is an excellent martial artist. That's fact. But Bruce was just different. My late brother was better than MJW. Hands down. I wish he had lived. He would have been one of the greatest martial artists. He just had a great aptitude for martial arts. God rest his soul

What about the incident that John Little mentioned where Joe Lewis had a confrontation with Bruce and afterwards he wouldn't talk about it but he said Bruce called him a punk? Kareem Abdul Jabbar in an interview said Bruce gave him pointers on sparring with Joe Lewis and Joe couldn't touch him the entire time.

The speed, power and control of bruce lee was incredible, oh to have been a fly on the wall during some of his encounters and demonstations. If anyone invents a time machine, the bruce lee erra is where I'm headed....not to challenge him of course!

Lee used weapon first (independent motion) technique very well. That and his natural speed made his attacks very effective.
At last a genuinely well balanced well thought out view on what MAY have. happened. BUTsurly what ever the truth may or may not have been. It must and shouldn't take anything away. from either Bruce or Lewis. but human nature is being what it is the actual flesh and blood reality of our heroes are very often brushed away to make. way. for the David that took on Goliath, the jack that took on the giant. But lee must have still pound for pound something truly exceptional and one genuinely gifted martial artist.

Makes sense.. why else would he continue to spread the knowledge and promote Bruce Lee's training approach? There's an interview of Joe Lewis speaking as if the damage he took, the way he was hit from their intitial exchange influenced him to come back, learn more and be trained by Bruce Lee. Why would any champion make that kind of choice if the person were not authentic?

That's a very good point. I remember points fighters of that era complained that a trophy don't put gas in my tank so as you say the prize money was none existent so they were part timers in contrast to today's pro cage fighters.

I think the world would have liked if Bruce had some competitive fights for all to see. There would be less doubt that he could have sparred with the best.
I completely understand about myths bu5 it can work the other way as well. With Bruce being so popular in the Medea if there was anyone who had really defeated him doesn’t one think that would be plastered all over the place. I’m not really a Bruce Lee fan in the fanatical sense but as a human being to a fellow human being he was phenomenal to say the least. As a fighter and as a human being.

Bruce Lee! A beautiful incredible and remarkable man. A true legend. What a loss for the world but I am so grateful we had him. Watching Enter the Dragon on laserdisc over and over as a kid and then doing all the moves from the movie were such great times. I learned so much from Bruce Lee as well and still do to this day. I love him for letting me know to flow rather than crash...ive crashed plenty but the heads up even I could understand as a kid probably saved my life in some ways. Thank you Master Lee 🙏💛
