My mum's dead. Died 2008 aged 88. She was born raised in Bundoran west coast EIRE (Ireland). Roughly eight miles from the border to Northern Ireland. She hated the IRA. She was a Catholic. She had connections in her family to the IRA from middle 1920's. She still hated the IRA and all they stood for. We were in Mcgriskin's pub in Kiltyclogher around 1966 and the pub struck up rebel songs supporting the IRA position. She stood up, told them to shut up.....they did. She was working in London then, married a Cockney had three kids. She always returned home to connect with her roots. In the late 1980's Mr Nairac was in the news. He'd disappeared. No body found. I asked her what she thought. She looked at me. Said he was an Officer in the Army, sent to tap up locals in a pub to find information. He was kidnapped by the IRA. Tortured for days. He gave up NOTHING. He died under torture. The IRA buried him. The IRA were very impressed he told them nothing.....despite. They hated him but respected him. He was buried and his body has never been found. I believe this version from my mum.....i think dhe knew. She admired his bravery. Courage.

Imagine playing undercover in a country that’s been oppressed for at least 300 years by the country you’re coming from. In that era especially everyone would be hyper suspicious of outsiders even outsiders from other parts of southern Ireland. A notoriously clannish land where everybody knows everybody in the local sense. I mean which English man in his right mind would be chancing a night out in times of occupation by the enemy from across the way? I mean picture any Israeli undercover soldier trying to be a civilian in the West Bank. Seriously it won’t be long before that undercover IDF operative is found slumped and rotting on a heap of rubble just outside a Palestinian settlement. I mean an undercover IDF singing patriotic songs amongst the oppressed locals. Make it make sense !

Nope, the issue was the number of loyal citizens from northern Ireland who gave their lives in WW1 and the incredibly overtly Catholic nature of the fledgling Republic of Ireland. You’d have had a much worse and more brutal civil war than the relatively small and benign war for independence. Also it has nothing to do with England, those were the terms agreed by all parties with the UK government for the referendum. You might also want to check the terms of the Belfast agreement. The UK can’t just agree to ‘free’ Northern Ireland, there is a guaranteed cross border referendum built into it. Up to now it’s unlikely the vote would go the way you expect.

    • @shacklock01

Well the issue you have is that we settled lots of protestant Scots there 'the Ulster plantation'. Fast forward to now and you got a distinct subculture many of which feel British. They often seem more patriotic than your average Englishman. NI does not give England anything economically these days but it's not as easy as just leaving
Look at the mess we made in so many places where we just left without a plan

Barely anyone can see a GP in the North of Ireland fs and have you seen the NHS? it's a disaster it's completely downhill like it's that terribly bad that people in the north are paying for private healthcare WHILE paying their taxes to keep the NHS running so pretty much people in Northern Ireland are paying double than what people down south are paying.
