Brokedown House Production
I had a seat behind the stage for this one. Didn't sit there much but when Bobby said the usual "we'll be back in a little bit ", I ran around the back of the stage, looking down on the steps behind the stage and Jerry and Bobby were walking down the steps . I called out their names and they both looked up at me and waved. I'll never forget that moment.
I was just vicariously living through your words as I read them. Thanks for taking me there. Blissss
@@fs8820 Amen! Great story!
I was smoking phatties behind stage with Gordy and Fast Eddy during drums in space at this show
This was my first indoor show and the midi effects Jerry used at the end of Shakedown made me feel like I was on Mars! Mars rocks!
There is something really nice about how they sound this night. They just seem to play together so nice and smooth and seem really comfortable here. Such a great band. Magical night.
There's something really nice about how they sound this year, and the first seven months of the next, too. Peak Dead.
The day after the Loma Prieta Earthquake and I had just transplanted from Philadelphia to beautiful Santa Cruz. This show is a gem. Long Live The Philadelphia Spectrum !
Yes...why were the shows at the Spectrum always so damn good? Miss those days. First place on my travels when someone finally invents the time machine: a late 80's Dead show.
I know man, every damn one was amazing!!
@@_grateful_zen_4515 I concur.
Ots was that thr crowd played the band. They had a set list to play but that was only a suggestion. They could read a crowd an give them what they wanted.
You ever play the game of whats this song when they endded one song and they kept playing an you hear rifs from a dozen songs before the next song started. They could read the crowd. Some people thought i was tripping. I WAS
Oh please let me come with you. Late 80's was my favorite era. Not just because I was there (I started in '86 at 14), but it seems to me that every show was a jem in those days.
I forgot about this show. The first set is so perfectly arranged. This show is an extraordinary example of a very professional performance! Jerry is phenomenal, perfectly supported!,
I just wanna go back again.... so freaking good.
Hello, Liz MacKenzie!
I want to Jerry and Phil alyewes
I love all the guys equally, but I'll tell ya, Bobby is something else... his playing is so unique and wonderful...
This is the first time I saw the omnipotent Grateful Dead!!! It was just four months after I graduated high school! I have the show on my Ipod but to see the entire show on video is just sublime! Groovy memories come flooding in!
GOTTA LOVE GETTING MISPLACED MEMORIES BACK !!!
Great Show! Nothing like the Spectrum shows over the years.
This I Know U Rider is one of my all time favorites, but this whole show is superb!! Face melted.........
Jerry used Wolf when he was trying out the synth thing and Rosebud was being built... I love Wolf.... Its my favorite of all of his guitars...
holy smokes, i just realized this was my first show!!! i remember blue unicorns, terapin>d/s>gimme some lovin>watchtower and i was on the bus since...
My first show too and had me at the first note of shakedown ! Hahah the unicorn blue...
Just wanted to say that i appreciate all the hard word that went into creating this fine production. It is amazing and much appreciated!
Great show!!!!!...Rest in Peace Brent.....Rest in Peace Garcia...Thank you for the memories.
It all started that night , hooked 200+ ❤️

I was at this show. I remember Mickey starting to jump his drums when Jerry started Terrapin. What a treat.

Hey now ! That Garcia guitar 🎸 solo on Black Peter is just Pure Garcia, Sweet tone , haunting and melodic just beautiful, Goosebumps, a great show here with a standard kind of set list but lots of energy ! Mahalo Voodoo this was a treat Peace ☮ and Aloha from Hawaii 🌸🐬🐳🐙🤙🌺🌋🏄🏻♂🐠⛵🌴🌹🍺🙏🍄🌊🏝🤩
One of the best Music Never Stopped😛...I was at the show with JP and Jamison...killer show!!!!🥳🤯
I remember wondering if this show was going to happen. The Loma Prieta earthquake the night before resulted in the collapse of the Bay Bridge and the indefinite postponement of the World Series Game 3 between the A's and Giants. With so many band and crew families potentially impacted, there was some level of doubt. I loved the breakout of the defiant California Earthquake a couple days later. I caught Hampton (The Warlocks), most of Meadowlands, and Spectrum on that strong tour. I still point to 10/9/89 as my favorite.
Great comment. So I've LOVED 10/20 for about 30 years, seriously, it was a top shelf cassette back in 91-94. I wasn't there however, and didn't really connect the heaviness and personal impact of the earthquake to these shows until a couple years ago, I spent a weekend feeding my head and listened to the whole run, a couple times lol, and it all made perfect sense as a singular masterpiece. I can only imagine the chaos and worry they all must have felt the night before, on the phone with family and friends all day. All the songs seem to relate. Beautiful catharsis. We will get by.
ship of fools is probably my favorite song ever
Who is this mysterious voodoonola? Whoever you are, you're awesome for uploading all these videos. Endless good times to be had
I've heard through the grape vine it's Dan Healy... but don't quote me on that.
That's cool to think about anyway, Fragile Thunder

Thanks! this was quite a night. Shakedown the night after the SF earthquake wow, then two nights later the debut of California Earthquake very good run in Philly.
I remember this well, they sold Rakin' in a Dead Show t-shirts in the lot (still have it). Awesome Spectrum show, amazing setlist.
Still grateful, still dead. Still....I like his work.
So wish I still had mine - think it was a purple dye with a skeleton raking leaves. Bought it before I jumped on the subway to head home...
I love this show so much.
Turn Me On dead man
I love anything about the Gratefuldead because I was a friend a long time ago in the 80 s !
so grateful for this thanks
Brent was an addict !but the best at music ,when he had his daughter he tried to go straight but nothing could stop him 🥲❤️🐰😘
But he was the best at what he did !
I went to his room to c how he was ,drunk & ready to drink some more I told him no more he threw that bottle of rum up at the ceiling ,broke it of course ,me ,Bobby & my niece were in there ,Bobby asked how to get out of the room with glass all over the place ! I told them to close their eyes forget it start walking ,none of us got cut !
We just floated out of Brent’s room , never got a cut on us ! 🤣😂😅💔❤️🔥
One of the nest ever on the east coast.so tight, the boys on fire!.we were lucky to have them as long as we did.don't be sad.be g!ad we had them for so long.see ya on the otherside.peace and love.
Gotta love how he busted Wolf out for this tour...

Unbelievably good to hear such NEVER before heard such a Jerry moment..
Pretty good Terrapin here. Always impressed when they’re trying to nail such difficult solos while playing entirely in the dark

Wonderful Black Peter
i was the guy walking around the lot with the giant pumpkin trippin balls
Love ur comment!!!!! Peace N Love
this was the fist place i ever saw them in 1979
they were so on point,i had no idea what a bangin show i was seeing! i remember asking the guy next to me, are they really good tonight? is it akways like this? he said they were killing it! the dead hour was canceled tonight, so i qued up 1989 and found the beginning...i rode the bus til soldier field 95.
Great one voodoo 🌹🧚🎼
...Brent and the bass and the drums...
I never saw him play any other guitars in that era...I saw JGB at an Albany show in the 90s and something went wrong with his Irwin mid-song and the band jammed for 5-10 min while he got a back-up rigged up...maybe probs with the Irwin that night?
I think it was 6/21/95, I was there. Before or after FOTD, either the lightning bolt or rosebud wasn't working and he played either rosebud or tiger instead. Fuzzy memories lol but yeah, you right.
I was there!
Interesting to note-the very last 'event' held at the Spectrum before it was imploded was a Grateful Dead show in May of 2011 I believe? Also, the same goes for JFK Staduim, another historic Philly landmark! That run of shows was in July of 1989...Early in the month, like July 7th-10th I believe? Anyhow, I just find it interesting that out of all the Philly teams, concerts, circuses, tractor pulls, whatever, The good ol' Grateful Dead shut down 2 of Philadelphia's famous landmarks/Stadium/Arenas! (⚡);}
Gary Fitz not so pearljam closed the spectrum in October of that year also Bruce did a run as well
Gary Fitz was at both concerts. Dead will never die
Yeah, Pearl Jam closed the Spectrum with their show on 10/31/09. The last Dead show there (just as The Dead, not the Grateful Dead obviously) was 5/2/09. Was at both. Great times all around.
and the final event at Boston Garden was suppose to be a Dead show in September 95.
Doug Shepherd RIP miss you bro
It kind of scared him he said because he wasn’t expecting anything but obviously she was a ghost that followed him around with much love like nobody can love as much as a mom ! ❤️🐇🐰🌹🎼🎹👽🪐🛸☮️👻🥀☠️💀☄️💥☀️🌈🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🖤🩶🤎💖❤️🔥💔all the hearts for all the mothers out there !

I did tell them to bring back these old tunes because being a Deadhead for so long as I was then they did listen to me as I have said before but some of u people don’t say much about it because u y’all r so frigging young u don’t know what is up or down ! It makes me mad !😖😣😟😫😩🤬❤️🐇🐰🌹🎹🎼🥀👽🪐🛸💀☠️👻🥰but love to all just the same !
I wish I was a headlight on a northbound train!
Only one distant shaky camera from this show forward. Pinky's on it
We were like 10 rows out and let me tell ya seeing those midi chords and knobs on 1 of my favorite guitars i ever saw jerry play and those God awful noises that came out of it i gave my ticket away and went and sat far,far away. Why would anyone mess with the guitars that made me so happy since '77 ?
Because it brought back the psychedelic sensibility & space to stretch out on the jammy songs that had been so painfully absent from Grateful Dead music since the days of Jerry's health deterioration started in the mid '80's. Listen to the space opened up on the Birdsong jamming when Jerry changes the tone of his playing to different sounds - it brought a new sense of interest and exploration to the music. They would have never brought back Dark Star, Death Don't Have No Mercy, Attics of my Life, etc, without the midi. For me the 89 thru 91 era was the "last great era" of Grateful Dead, the 84 thru 88 era was mainly Forgettable IMHO.
sounds cool to me ...it's just different.. the Dead were all about evolving their sound; Jerry loved experimenting with lots of different sounds.. some times they maybe didn't sound right to some people or whatever, but at least he changed it up and didn't just play the same tones all the time. That is one of the many reasons I love him, he was not afraid to say "here we go!" and try something experimental and new, whether it worked or not...which is subjective..
@@sideshowbobdrkstrjry5876 great answer 👊
Because Jerry never stopped growing as an artist, searching for the sound. He wasn't a statue in a wax museum. He was ALIVE and MOVING. Tam explorator -- like an explorer -- was Ben Jonson's motto -- and Jerry's too. Expand your mind. Expand your ears. Expand your heart.
I'm from CT I went to many shows at the Spectrum and I always knew it was going to be a long, long crazy, crazy night...as a matter of fact I got two miracles there, one a free ticket and another a free ticket,a big Bud and a tab of acid when I returned a girl's pocket book
Vent like Brent!!!
GREAT PHILLY SJOW
sweet - where did these videos come from - outstanding - yep journey home was there
Jerry forgetting lyrics (5:09)- still The Man
I haven't heard a bad Philly show yet! I'm sure there are some that aren't as good as this, and I'm sure there are probably even better... but man, they really tore the place up when they played there!
You're right, and honestly this is my favorite Spectrum run. I think the earthquake made it personal and heavy and cathartic and beautiful.
@@erikmorse5089 agreed!
You just gotta poke around..😂
March 17 1992 was a bad show Was there but Garcia sure wasnt
@@user-fu2mi1nd5l they can't all be zingers .. in 92 things got rough, but 93 was mostly good in my opinion. garcia's collaborations with david grisman during this time are some of the finest music he made in his later years.

WWWWOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!!
Damn Philly got their share of Shakedowns
i would give my right middle finger for the wolf..
The Gratefuldead were the only band that did what they did plus got to play in front of the pyramids ? No other band was ever invited there to do what they did with their music !
Plus Philly told me he went inside one of them + called for his mother who died recently + she said Phil !
where's the tiger? JG playing the Wolf!
Like I said , Philly told me he went in 1 of the pyramids + called out to his mom + she called back , Phil ! 😘🥰😍❤️🐰🐇🌹👻🥀
The Fall '89(also late summer west coast) shows featured "The Wolf" as it was fitted with a Roland guitar synth. "Rosebud" was being built(with onboard MIDI) and I believe the "Tiger" was in disrepair. If you look at spring and summer '89 shows, Garcia would usually play a Strat fitted with a Roland synth for space, returning to "Tiger" after. "The Wolf" was around since '73.
+Todd Morrissey The midi Strat appeared during the summer of 88. Jerry was playing it nightly during space>songs like I will take you home.
The first midi guitar he played live was 4-17-89, they had sound checked several times but he didn’t add it to space until that final show of spring tour.
All these comments great. I love us nerds! 3 months ago I was doing some yard work with one of the Alpine 89 shows cranked on the outdoor system, and during FOTD, while I'm raking pine needles, I hear Jer play the gnarliest, nastiest riff, and I jerked my head and thought "oh wow, he just plugged in his new toy." I didn't "know", but I just KNEW. It's pretty obvious 2/3 way through that it's the Wolf synth. I went inside and googled it and sure enough, that was the first night he played it. 🤘🤘

@@johnholland4882 good eye/ear, my bad.
@@ReedRosson1987 @John Holland, I'm confused? This is def the Wolf. Rosebud was being built so he had Irwin retrofit Wolf with an outer MIDI attachment for fall 89. Rosebud first appears for the encore of 12/31/89 ✌
