“Countdown” (1982) was inspired by the April 12, 1981 launch of the Columbia Space Shuttle, the first reusable manned spacecraft. Rush were guests of NASA for the send-off at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Neil Peart penned the lyrics, which describe the feeling of anticipation and wonder as they took in the epic event. “It was an incredible thing to witness,” said Peart. “A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Audio from NASA’s actual countdown was interspersed through this track.
Rush dedicated “Countdown” to astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen, and “all the people of NASA for their inspiration and cooperation.” 💙🚀💚

It was a Sunday I think they scrubbed the launch 2 times before it actually lifted off I was 13 when this happened I remember staying home from school to watch the landing at Edwards Air Base in California before they started landing at the Cape in Florida

I really love this album. It came out during a time when I kept asking myself, "What can they possibly come out with next?" Then they drop this album and I was blown away. I remember seeing them perform in my home town of Houston Texas at the Sam Houston Coliseum and it feels like I just saw and heard them yesterday. I remember seeing Neil banging away on this song and it was brilliant. I still can't believe he's gone. RIP Neil Peart
I'm also from Houston. My dad worked for NASA. My brother got me into Rush in the early '80s and I first saw them at The Summit on the Signals tour. Great video to a great song!
One of their top albums. And they have a lot of ‘em.
My mom got me into them when I was four or five, and I started binging their music when I was 12 and learning guitar. It took a while, but in my thirties this album grew on me and became my favorite, and this song is always my go-to for some reason.

NASA didn't "need to give them to RUSH"... Anyone can get the tapes of the radio broadcast.. then or now... its called Freedom of Information Act.
And apparently, the specific area where they stood to watch it was 'Red Sector A'. Which Neil remembered a few years later when thinking about song titles for Grace under Pressure.

Yeah, The video does help enhance the song quite a bit. But Discovery was not the first shuttle launched. Columbia was. At the 1:01 mark we see the Discovery Shuttle on the launch pad. Which is fine. But would have been cooler if it were the actual first shuttle launch with Columbia.
@@marsdrums6298 In the first shuttle launch, STS101 the external tank foam was white, not brown, so technically, nearly all of this video is wrong. That said, great video with excellent audio, and a great tribute to one of my favorite Rush songs.
I have a friend who is an astronaut and has been in space. I asked him if he knew of this song, and with a wide eyed grin, he replied - "every astronaut knows this song".
Every darned time I watch this is never fails to move me - it brings tears to my eyes both for the pride and astonishment of what we have managed to do as somewhat evolved apes but also in memory of watching that dreadful day in '86 when Challenger didn't make it.

This song was the highlight of the Signals Tour. A video very similar to this was projected behind the band for the song. Rush could be the only band that could play a 3 1/2 hour concert and somebody in the audience would not hear their favorite song. Their body of work is so vast and awesome.

I really think it was an honor for the guys to be invited to witness this. Who else but Rush - and especially the Professor -could do this justice?
The background about this song is truly beautiful with the fact that NASA invited them to experience it and sit in the VIP area along with high level politicians and others. It's an amazing story.

That riff that starts at 5:00 is one of my favorite Lifeson riffs of all time. It's just so damn mean and that extra beat screws you up at least once every time you try to play along! I love it! 🤘

(Followed by) "Young and Crippen really moving out now, velocity reading of 6200 feet per second." *That is nearly one thousand feet more than a Mile, per second!* And then, "What a view, what a view." - "Glad you're enjoying it." - "Columbia, Houston, we have 40 seconds to LOS, after LOS you're looking good for an over-the-hill; we'll see you in Madrid." *LOS* is loss of signal, and this was the first Space Shuttle launch in history, on April 12, 1981. All three RUSH band members were there, standing in awe with many others in the "Red Sector A" viewing area. This was an inspiration for the song of the same name, from *Grace Under Pressure* in 1984.

I found the Columbia launch recordings from that flight and pieced together the excerpts that Rush used in the song.
It took a while, but it was a labor of love.
I was profoundly impacted by this first shuttle launch as an impressionable 13-year-old. So much so, that I served in the United States Air Force hoping for a career in aerospace technology.
The 'Signals' album and the synth era of Rush hold a special place in my heart since that block of time in my life was centered around my teenage music discovery, and the beginning of my drumming career.

This always has been one of my favorites from Rush, although it has to be hard to pick from all their songs.
I remember the day the Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry, as the news of it was just coming out, our local radio station in Lancaster, PA had a guy call in and request the station play this song in memory of the crew that was lost. It really hit home with me. I couldn’t believe my local station was playing this hidden gem on the airwaves! The only time I’ve ever heard it on the radio, and it will probably never be played on that station ever again either!
This and natural science.... This week at least 😂

The Mercury Redstone and Atlas. The Gemini Titan. The Apollo Saturn V, and today’s modern re-usable SpaceX Falcon IX returnable boosters... They were and are all awesome. But they one and all were and are vertically staged boosters. Rockets that looked the part. There was no doubt in the mind that they should fly exactly as they did and do.
But the Shuttle was a different beast altogether. Never before and likely never again have I ever seen or will ever see such a wild conglomeration of shapes, volumes, size and angles.
It is the ultimate in “that has NO BUSINESS flying at all, much less to orbit”!!!
I loved it. In modern day I would say that it was the most “Kerbal” of designs. It is ridiculous, preposterous, ungainly and yet it flies beautifully!!!
The shuttle was AWESOME!! As Rush’s lyrics so aptly put it. It was a fire breathing dragon of a launch vehicle. And like the mythical dragons of old, which would never realistically fly, and yet do - at least in the imagination - there was something ineffably magical about it. A magic that Rush perfectly captures with this song!
Nothing like seeing them live during this tour with the huge video screens running this video while they played. Truly magical.
Decades ago, I was the service manager for a company that installed the big satellite TV systems. The test system in my office was almost always tuned to satellite S-2, channel 9. N.A.S.A. On launch days, volume on the phone got turned off; everyone got quiet, and we all watched intently as the engines began to billow fire as the shuttle launched. Truly a mix of magic and science.
Love seeing the shuttle sitting there ready to belch fire and crack the sky!
My kids got me the 40th anniversary picture disc of Signals for father's day. Love it. I've got my original vinyl from back in the day. Still sounds great. I made sure to do my fatherly duty and got my kids into Rush at an early age, they love em. My work is done.
I worked 8 years at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, next door to Kennedy Space Center and the Space Shuttle. My Dad worked on the Shuttle's payload, and 1 of my brothers worked in the Shuttle Procurement Dept. Enjoyed this video - it brings back memories.

Just joined the "100 Mile Club" Runners of 100 miles per month...
I would listen to this on my newly bought Japanese Stereo, Loud....
And then Run the Seawall...
This song charged my battery !
Then I would run 4.5 miles on the Seawall !!!
Within 2 minutes I was running 6 minute miles for at least three of them.
I did not know the lyrics at the time,,, but the song launched me.

Excellent job! You captured it! I saw them perform this in Toronto during the Signals tour. Tons of "smoke" billowing from the base of the screen behind them for the launch scene. That was a big deal for back then. Have been to the Cape many times and actually saw 2 shuttle launches back in the 80s as well! Nice work!

I can recall seeing this video for the first time when it was at Cedar Point on the imax screen… years and years and years ago 🙂
What simply stunning footage to go with a simply stunning tune (how could Geddy suggest this song wasn't all that good?!), although for many years, i didn't need any actual footage to 'get' this - my imagination was truly locked-in to, and able to build the whole episode, such is the immense 'storytelling' power on display here. The lyrics are sublime, and the whole tension of the thing is just incredible, until it finally resolves itself once the craft is well and truly off-the-ground. Each to his own (Geddy x), but this is amongst the best of Rush... \m/ (:o)

klistarf Imagine how cool the keyboard riff at 4:31 would have been if it was Alex on guitar instead. I think Geddy was referring to the grief he got from Alex n Neil regarding his obsession with keyboards during this period of their music. Although the synth totally plays to the time period, I still prefer Geddy on bass.

Just amazing work. As a kid I listened to this track and tried to picture what seeing the shuttle launch would be like. Just awesome.
The Shuttle was just fascinating. It was an incredibly ambitious and technically impressive piece of engineering. And yet, in practical terms it was actually a bit of a disaster. It was meant to reduce the cost and increase the frequency of launches, but instead was outrageously expensive per launch (even compared to single-use heavy rockets) and had low launch frequency. It was also statistically the least-safe manned space launch vehicle ever put in service. But it's just so COOL. Space fans rightly have very mixed feelings about the Shuttle. I think it's right to call it the Lamborghini Countach of space travel.
This is the future... and the future is bright and its out there waiting for us too!

After The Shuttle later on Blew Up, WE (I and Buds) Played in REMEMBRANCE of Lives LOST !!! Most people disregard this song but it is an "awesome sound"m of HISTORY in US Space Exploration. ( Even Though I wonder if we Really went to the MOON !???)

They were invited to watch the first Shuttle launch back in 81. The external tank was painted white that 1 time. Wasn't cost efficent. That must've been a real hoot for them to witness that historical flight.....

Great video collection of launches. In my slide show I made same mistake of not using "white et tank" images as this is song is about the first flight Columbia..ans was only not painted later to save weight.

Great video.. right up until the end... you should have had the video end with separation of the ET from the orbiter, signifying its reached orbit... That's truly the end of the launch (and the end of the song).
