C1 Mk2 PSA 1.2 petrol engine code P0494 fix

In today’s video, I’m getting to the bottom of a code that the Mk2 C1 with the 1.2 litre PSA engine has thrown up. The code in question is P0494, which is apparently a common problem across the range of petrol PSA engines. It can be one of four things; the cooling fan, the fan controller, the wiring to the controller & fan or the main battery charge. I have managed to discount the battery because it has been tested and is showing a green charge indicator. The fan itself is running freely when turned by hand and when 12 Volts are applied directly to it (which I don’t recommend doing it the way I did!). There appears to be no problems with the wiring, so that narrows it down to only one thing, the cooling fan controller.
I removed the cooling fan controller by unscrewing the Torx 20 screw, unclipping it from its housing in the radiator and removing the two electrical plugs. Once removed, I measured the resistance across the coil. The value of 0.8 Ohms is stamped into the controller’s plastic casing, so anything around that value would be good. When measuring it, I didn’t get a reading at all, so that suggests that the coil is unserviceable and needs replacing. Just to be sure, I also measured the resistance of the coil on the replacement unit too, which shows 1.1 Ohms. For an after-market part, this is about as close as I’d expect and is good enough to resolve the issue.
Once I had fitted the replacement unit, I cleared the code and started the engine to see if the code came back. It did not, so that seems to me like the issue has been resolved. However, I will be keeping an eye on it for the next month or so to make sure that the engine management light does not return for that reason.
