Hi everyone! This video is outdated. What you're going to do is go into the configuration menu --> Retropie Setup --> Manage Packages --> Manage Optional Packages --> scroll down until you find scraper --> Install. It was renamed scraper but other than that it works really well!
Im just settin a new pie up fro my brother and it wont find any images for sega games. Its saying error while it is running but its going so fast i cant read it but it found the snes ones am i doing something wrong. It also wont find them on the normal built in scraper
DUDE u have been a god sent. I build a RetroPie coffee table and I have basic computer skills, not a noob willing to jump in there but sometimes can't get out. but all your videos from setting up the RetroPie to this video has helped to so much. thank you
Thanks for this. It's a little trickier to find in 4.2 but I managed by going to Manage Optional Packages inside the configuration menu. It's just called "scraper" now and was the last optional package in the list for me. This scraper managed to find some games that were turning up no results in the Emulation Station scraper (three-letter titles like the NBA and NHL games for SNES, for example).
How can anyone dislike any etaprime video? This dude is one of the most likable people on the internet. This dude has helped me fix issues so many times before. He is so popular that after his video on the nespi case it actually had a impact on the price if it and it shot up from $25 to $150 for about 2 weeks. Thanks ETA for all your hard work. I doubt you read comments on such old videos but that's ok. Keep up the good work. By the way does anyone know when the gamesdb scraper site will be up and running again? For over a month i haven't been able to scrap games using the scraper in emulation station. When will they fix it?
I found it in a slightly different place - retropie setup>manage optional packages>scraper. It’s simply listed as “scraper” on my install. (Maybe changed since this video was posted). Thanks for yet another great tutorial, ETA Prime.
Great vid! All of your videos have helped me understand this stuff to the point that i can fix my setup and load the roms into the RetroPie! Thanks ETA!
The Steven Selph's Scraper was absolutely not on mine, and yes I was "looking hard enough", as you put it. I had to install it under "optional packages".
He posted this in 2016. The package options has been updated since then, hence why it was named different and in a different location. If you read the top comments you would of seen this.
Thanks man. This looks amazing, and i'm looking forward to trying it myself. Just a request, if you ever get the time: I would love a video with tips and tricks on how to enhance the picture quality, when playing PSX on RetroPie 4. It would be highly appreciated. Cheers mate!
As far as I understand it, it doesn't go by filename, so changing it wouldn't work. Rather it computes a file hash (from the ROM sans the header) and compares it to a list to get the exact match. Meaning you could name your Super Mario Brothers 2 rom "Bleep bloop.nes" and it would still find it from the list. The cases where the name is not found is when it is a non-standard rom, a translation or a romhack where the hash has changed from the original. Or it is just a different/bad dump or another dump compared to the one in Selph's database.
No matter what I cannot get this to work. I followed your directions but when I choose to Scrape Roms it immediately says "Roms Scraped" and nothing is changed at all.
Dude i had the same issues if i selected a particular system. In the end i just selected scrape all and it worked, hope you have this issue sorted now anyway!
+Luxor Cephren This guy knows. If you scrape all systems at once, it should work. If you want to only scrape an individual system at a time, I found I could get it to work via terminal, but I can't recall what lines I used to run it. You can find them on Google somewhere.
What about the Universal XML Scraper? Also, do you still have to run this outside of emulation station? The 3 image art is so much nicer to me in UXS, I can see the logo, the box art and a screen shot. Is there a difference in support? In other words, does one scraper have a larger database of content to cover more games than another?
What’s up ETA. Your help has been incredible. Thank you so much for your videos. I did want to know if there is a way to remove unwanted video snaps without manually removing them? I added ROMs, got the snaps, I removed unwanted ROMs but still have the snaps. Do I have to manually remove the snaps or is there a faster way?
Great vids, thanks for all the work you've done orienting us beginners. Let's say I have a game, in the US, Japanese, and hack versions, how will the scraper work? Will I still be able to tell which is which?
When I go to update the setup scrip it gives me an error that says: "Could not successfully build omxiv - OpenMAX image viewer for the Raspberry Pi (omxiv.bin not found)" It also tells me that Raspbian/Debian Jessie and versions of Ubuntu below 16.04 are no longer supported and I have to install retropie 4.4 or newer from a fresh image. My retropie is 4.5.17 so I don't understand what is happening.
not sure which mass scraper it was, but I remember that it screwed up so bad I had to reinstall retropie because it ended up making my game list look like I had the same game installed several times lol, quite annoying. I'll give this baby a try once I purchase a new pi3 since my other one has been repurposed for my network adblocker/intrusion detector.
Is there any difference in how well the scrape works if you just do it from the retropie screen itself and don't use the Stephen Selph scraper? I'm running newest version of retropie 4. something.
Blazing Johnny95 Im doing that now as i write this and it seems to just blaze real fast through the roms i had on my initial scrape. Now it is back to the original speed adding info and pic art for the games that i have added since original scrape
Hey ETA Prime, how do you run both ntsc and Japanese roms for PlayStation? I noticed you have harmful park. Just wondering because I tried having both the us and Japanese bios in the bios folder, but the Japanese games won't run. Any tips would be helpful. Great videos, btw.
Is it possible to set the directory the scraper is writing to? For instance, all my retropie games are on an external hdd while running retropie from the pie itself. Is it possible to have all the scraped files write to the hdd instead of the retropie flash card? Thanks for all the awesome videos, you are one of the people who got me into the retropie hobby. Keep on being awesome.
Good question I'm not sure but I can look into it in the morning, I know there is no option in the scraper itself but I may be able to make something work
Felipe Nuñez you have to install the "scraper" package for version 4.2. In the setup menu (at the bottom it says perform reboot) go to MANAGE PACKAGES, then MANAGE OPTIONAL PACKAGES, then select option 827 (on mine anyways) which is called SCRAPER. Then select INSTALL FROM SOURCE. Once installed continue as in this video. Hope this helps!
the universal xml scraper pulls a little prettier images down. it can do a 3 image set(box art, title, screenshot) as well as videos instead of game screenshot. a little easier to use too.
I've looked all over to find a walk through on how to delete a previous scrape I did (the built in scraper changed a lot of sequels to the name of the original thus creating duplicates) so I want to start fresh. I'm honestly brand new to the world of RetroPie and the software but I've managed to get settings and what not changed to function properly. What exactly am I supposed to delete and how do I go about doing that to get a blank slate in regards to scraping?
I use 4.1 retropie and got it working. I have been using No-intro rom sets and it is hit and miss for me right now. I am looking into the names first. I can't seem to get any Mame roms detected by it.
I used the scraper in retropie and it found the artwork for the games that the scraper for Selph couldn't find. When you run that make sure to choose OFF for user prompt or the thing will stop at each rom it finds artwork for.
Is there any way to stop scraping once you have begun, or are you committed to it once you begin? I ask because I always have it scan for all consoles once I have added new things, but it will rescrape games it already has data for, which is a waste of time when you have a lot of games. Also, will this result in multiple copies of the data files, taking up unnecessary space?
Hey ETA Prime! Thanks for the great tutorials. I have a question for Game Wizard... I tried to add additional consoles onto my raspberry pi through RC3, but the "accept" screen will not let me since I click OK and nothing happens. DO you know what could be the cause of this? I was wondering if my SD Card is full and will not allow me to add anything else. Currently, I have NES, Super NES, Amiga, Sega Genesis, Sega 32X, Sega CD. I would like to add Saturn, Dreamcast, 3DO and any others that I can possibly add. Any assistance would be helpful and I would be grateful.
Hi, I've done this on a few different Pi systems. Once it scrapes, every rom name has additions at the end of it. Ex: sonic the hedgehog (USA, Europe). I edited every name before I transferred them. Without the region in parenthesis
I used this scraper and it works great. I do have a question though. How do I get it to put the game image and info on the left side? After running the scraper everything is on the right side of the screen and doesn't look as good to me. I also don't have a Last Played and Times played on my game's metadata. Is there anyway I can change this? Thanks for the great tutorial!
so i used the scraper but now i have to input by hand...find game, press select, click "edit this games metadata" hit scrape input what game it is that i want info for. wait save and on to the next game....very time consuming is there a faster way??
Nice! Question: I'm using a MicroSD card and I had all the games saved to a USB. But all the games ended up on the SD but I can't find the games on the SD card. any ideas on how to find and edit them? I'm asking because my brother in law put like 15,000 games onto the USB and it has way too many duplicates.
Go the the retropie settings while in emulationstation and go to file manager and you can navigate to where your roms are and then delete what you need to
I find your videos very informative and helpful, but the scraper didn't find anything for me. And i point blank refuse to spend hours doing it manually. What a shame
Why is it that when I use this scrap it uses the majority of the original file name? For example: Mortal Kombat II (USA) I just want it to say Mortal Kombat II... TheGamesDB scraper withing Retropie takes forever to use, but changes the file names properly to just the game title. Is there any method I can auto scrap like Selphs but also get the correct game titles?
Thank you! This was a big help. Can you please tell me how you got a working TMNT MAME? Every one that I download does not work with any of the emulators in MAME or Arcade.
This has completely ruined my access to my settings now. Just stuck in an endless loop now. Not sure how to remove your setup commands as I cannot access anything anymore.
Hello, Ive just started using RetroPie and i was getting everything set up the way i wanted. I'm using a pi3 and everything was working great till.. I ran: /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh and used selph's scraper from there, once scraping was done i rebooted my pi and was greeted with the error: emulationstation: /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/tmp/build/emulationstation/es-app/src/FileData.cpp:102: void FileData::addChild(FileData*): Assertion `aType == FOLDER' failed. Aborted luckily I'm still able to ssh into the pi any suggestions on a course of action?
Hello ETA PRIME how would I go about getting rid of the numbers in Gameboy Advance I have that as well I just don't want to do 1200 roms 1 by 1 I hear there's a way to do all at once Thank u Keep up the good work
Hi ETA, first of all thanks a lot for the detailed tutorials man. I followed the video and tried to install this, but it gives me the error that it couldn't find golang. I would stick with the regular scraper but it won't save the scraped images after restart. Thank you.
When I scrape for the Sega Mega Drive, only about half of the games get scraped successfully. A google search indicates that it is because the two systems (Mega Drive and Genesis) are being identified as one (not sure if this is on emulation stations end or the scrapers database end). I have noticed that when I put a rom into either the Mega Drive folder of the Genesis folder, the game is automatically copied to both folders. Anyone have any insights on getting all of the games scraped? Its the only system I've had any trouble scraping.
I followed your instructions exactly but when I scrape all systems it says "Could not successfully install scraper for EmulationStation by Steven Selph.
Is there anyway to get higher resolution artwork? In the scraper settings I set my width to 1920 with thumbnails disabled but my artwork is still very low resolution and pixelated. Thanks!
hi i got this to work well, but 2 of my rom sets wont show the video scrapes it made ive tryed totally redoing the sd card from scratch but the same 2 rom sets megadrive and 64 still wont show the vids... any idea on how I can fix this?
What does the "rom names" option do? Does it rewrite how the names display in Emulation Station? Right now I have many duplicated roms with no identifying info to see which is the US, Japan, World, version, etc. How can I fix this? If the Scraper can do this, is there any way to re-run it to just update the names and NOT scrape all the huge files again? (It takes 8 hours to get the 1600+ Megadrive/Genesis artwork)
where is all this been saved at? the files and stuff. I want to back them up in case I need to make a copy. I dont need to wait too long. are they saved in the usb or micro SD card?
I found the folders where the images are located. the problem here is when making a copy of my current usb with this info installed is not even when connecting it.
Help! I've done the scraping but it had also scrape my retropie menu, so all the item are abbreviated "audiosetup" (with no descriptions). What can I do to revert it back?
i just did this and it didn't scrape any of the NES, SNES, SEGA 32X, SEGA Master System or SEGA Mega Drive games. it did scrape everything else. not sure why it didn't work with those systems.
@@vegaswould Do you think this is a daily quota because I was only able to scrape so much yesterday, then today I scraped a bunch and then got an error saying that my pie is either out of memory or space (4gb Pie with 50% left on sd card) and it won't scrape the remaining 60 games left that I definitely know have art available.
@@bonorbitz I think there is a total limit on how much you can put in the raspberry pi, independent of the memory card size. I have the exact same issue on both my RP3 32GB card and RP4 256GB card. If I only scrape images instead of videos, I can scrape alot more. If I only scrape box art, I can scrape the most amount. Scraping videos takes up too much space. If you have over 5000 games, cover art only. Still need to retest without skyscraper to confirm my theory.
THANK YOU!!!!! Dude I like step by step instructions even when typing. I cant find one game metadata however for sega32x....I scrapped gauntlet arcade it came up with star wars arcade lol. would you know how to fix that please? and it thx again
I have found it and installed the scraper but now after the reboot it is asking for Retropie Login and a Password. Why does it ask for that, i have no Login or Password.
Well I have a strange issue here. Followed this video and scraper all my roms. Prob about 4000. After scraping was done, I noticed that all the games in my Atari 7800 folder has been replaced with .Hack-Link. So I am now looking at a list of about 20 games all with .Hack-Link. When I look into the actual folder from my computer, the games are still there. In the NES folder, there are also multiple .Hack-link games along with NES games. The same goes for SNES. Any ideas? I am on PI3 with Retropie 4.3.9.
This is a problem on screenscraper's end. For some reason their API has started returning a huge amount of faulty "hack-Link" titles over the last month or so. And I can't figure out why. My own scraper Skyscraper does this aswell, so it's not just related to sselphs.
Hey question i was trying to scrap for box art and it was going really slow and it would do 5 and give me a network error so I figured its might need to be updated and i did all the updates and i went from 11k roms to 377 how can i fix that and why did it happen
Finally got this working. Thanks for the video. I had to delete the scraper config from my installed image and reinstall before this worked. Anyone know how I can remove names of ROMs I've deleted via my network? I've deleted the ROMs and they still show up in RetroPie? Scraper getting a bunch of "hash not found" errors due to them.
Hi everyone! This video is outdated. What you're going to do is go into the configuration menu --> Retropie Setup --> Manage Packages --> Manage Optional Packages --> scroll down until you find scraper --> Install. It was renamed scraper but other than that it works really well!

Thanks for this. It's a little trickier to find in 4.2 but I managed by going to Manage Optional Packages inside the configuration menu. It's just called "scraper" now and was the last optional package in the list for me.

Thanks! This helped me out a lot!
Glad this still works. I had no clue as to what I was doing.
How can anyone dislike any etaprime video? This dude is one of the most likable people on the internet. This dude has helped me fix issues so many times before. I found it in a slightly different place - retropie setup>manage optional packages>scraper. It’s simply listed as “scraper” on my install. (Maybe changed since this video was posted). Thanks for yet another great tutorial, ETA Prime.
INSTALL FROM OPTIONAL PACKAGES FIRST
What would be the difference? And you are referring to "Experimental" packages?
Nope, he is correct, optional packages is where its located if you cannot find it where described in the video.
Thank you
Really appreciate the setup videos.
Never thought I'd have a setup looking this slick. Thanks!
Nice cant wait to get home tonight and overclock my pi and set this up!!!!! Thanks man.

Love your videos man. Keep up the great work.

Just a request, if you ever get the time: I would love a video with tips and tricks on how to enhance the picture quality, when playing PSX on RetroPie 4. It would be highly appreciated.

The scraper is great. Using it to tag all my megadrive/genesis/32x roms.
After running my slim-down script for GoodGens. ;)
As far as I understand it, it doesn't go by filename, so changing it wouldn't work. Rather it computes a file hash (from the ROM sans the header) and compares it to a list to get the exact match. I just think the rifleman is so cool to look at and if your buddies bring those pesky vtols then you are already cooking
Awesome video. Very helpful!
I think this video has my favorite ETA PRIME intro

Same, if anyone has a fix that would be awesome because the default scraper is painfully slow.
This isn't working for me either. It says unknown and players next to the game, but everything is blank.

there is an option to scrape to rom folder. I have an external usb with my roms and have it scrape to the individual rom folders.
Where is this option? Am I blind?
Say I have to change names like you would with Zelda, should I changed the name and then rerun the whole process again or is there a better way?
Hello ETA Prime.
Retropie 4.2 does not have a Steven Selph's Scraper. Some other option?
Felipe Nuñez you have to install the "scraper" package for version 4.2. In the setup menu (at the bottom it says perform reboot) go to MANAGE PACKAGES, then MANAGE OPTIONAL PACKAGES, then select option 827 (on mine anyways) which is called SCRAPER. Then select INSTALL FROM SOURCE. Once installed continue as in this video. Hope this helps!
Matthew Burry wish I read this before I spent 40min going through all the folders
thanks
seriously me too...
Thank you
the universal xml scraper pulls a little prettier images down. it can do a 3 image set(box art, title, screenshot) as well as videos instead of game screenshot. a little easier to use too.
noclssgt yeah I made a video on that one also. I like it much better

just an headsup, you can run this through ssh but you still need to exit emulation station.
im from brazil, more one subscribe, nice work with the channel

I find your videos very informative and helpful, but the scraper didn't find anything for me. And i point blank refuse to spend hours doing it manually. What a shame

Hello, Ive just started using RetroPie and i was getting everything set up the way i wanted. I'm using a pi3 and everything was working great till..
I ran:
/home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh
and used selph's scraper from there, once scraping was done i rebooted my pi and was greeted with the error:
emulationstation: /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/tmp/build/emulationstation/es-app/src/FileData.cpp:102: void FileData::addChild(FileData*): Assertion `aType == FOLDER' failed. Aborted
luckily I'm still able to ssh into the pi
any suggestions on a course of action?
Hello ETA PRIME how would I go about getting rid of the numbers in Gameboy Advance I have that as well I just don't want to do 1200 roms 1 by 1 I hear there's a way to do all at once
Thank u
Keep up the good work
Everyone one of my roms had en error during scrape is that because I left the zipped? Only thing I can think of
gb/ gbc/ gba worked fine, NES/MSM/ SNES failed literally every single Scrape...
after completing this do you have to scrap the same way every time?
Hi ETA, first of all thanks a lot for the detailed tutorials man.
I followed the video and tried to install this, but it gives me the error that it couldn't find golang. I would stick with the regular scraper but it won't save the scraped images after restart. Thank you.
Nevermind, figured out. You have to connect to your wifi network and set password even if you had already in ES :)
I followed your instructions exactly but when I scrape all systems it says "Could not successfully install scraper for EmulationStation by Steven Selph.
use Universal XML Scraper V2. it works better when it works. connect your computer to the pi using wifi or ethernet .
Jae Lee I did that last week and successfully scraped all my games.
first, thanks for your tutorials, they are very helpful. this didn't work for me with mame, it only pulled the neo geo data. any suggestions? thanks.
Is there anyway to get higher resolution artwork? In the scraper settings I set my width to 1920 with thumbnails disabled but my artwork is still very low resolution and pixelated. Thanks!
Is there a way to adjust it so it will work when you are using an external drive?
hi i got this to work well, but 2 of my rom sets wont show the video scrapes it made ive tryed totally redoing the sd card from scratch but the same 2 rom sets megadrive and 64 still wont show the vids... any idea on how I can fix this?
Any news when retropie just gonna replace its scraper with this one?
Question: I'm using a USB thumbdrive to play my roms. I've changed the path name and now the scraper can't find the roms? How do I solve this?
Could this be done via USB Thumb Drive rather than the Pi itself connected to the internet?
i just did this and it didn't scrape any of the NES, SNES, SEGA 32X, SEGA Master System or SEGA Mega Drive games. it did scrape everything else. not sure why it didn't work with those systems.
Same here.
@@bonorbitz I'm starting to think there is a limit on how much you can scrape.
@@vegaswould I hope not... I'll look more into this. Thanks for your thoughts!
rpi 4.2.7 and scraper wont install. tried wires. wireless. nothing works. not sure if server is down to install.
THANK YOU!!!!! Dude I like step by step instructions even when typing. I cant find one game metadata however for sega32x....I scrapped gauntlet arcade it came up with star wars arcade lol. would you know how to fix that please? and it thx again
How's this different than just using the one in the menu?
After i perform a reboot, that black screen comes up again. It says : emation station failed to load because the country is not set
How can you hide game information such as publisher, last played, etc?
I need help please Should I keep my retro pie connected to the Internet and if so why ?
Hey question i was trying to scrap for box art and it was going really slow and it would do 5 and give me a network error so I figured its might need to be updated and i did all the updates and i went from 11k roms to 377 how can i fix that and why did it happen
Finally got this working. Thanks for the video. I had to delete the scraper config from my installed image and reinstall before this worked.
Anyone know how I can remove names of ROMs I've deleted via my network? I've deleted the ROMs and they still show up in RetroPie? Scraper getting a bunch of "hash not found" errors due to them.
hello..i using retropie 4.1 and the scraper by Stephen but neo geo don't want scraper...can you help me??
Looks like the setup Menu changed in 4.2 today. I can't seem to find where it is...
this works but if you need to scrape consoles, use screen scraper
Any way of actually REMOVING the numbers from the start of the roms AFTER installing the roms? I have a LOT of roms with X number at the start.
You can manually edit game info by pressing whatever you have bound as Select over whichever game you'd like to edit.
Mine scrapes so damn slow...literally about 1 game every 30 seconds🤦♂️
Added some new roms, then the scraper delete the other images and only update the new roms. Any solution?
ETAPrime when doing all the commands it takes me to the menu setup but i dont see the setup configuration. help please.
I followed instructions to a T but still nothing shows up?
if I'm using an external drive will it scrape all the roms
can u rescrap when u add more romes or will it not work still cant find it help retropi 4.2
Why do you always need a telescope to see the lettering ?
The default scraper won't find a single game I have and I have 671
You need to update emulationstation to latest.
@@Aurahead I'll give it a try
keep getting error "429 too many requests" any way to slow the scraper down a tad? im using x86 version
thanks
the necro bot are function or have a issue ?
