  • Hi everyone,
    You can read up my process on my blog post here: / my-nintendo-3ds-usb-c-...
    Or you can pick up the USB C breakout board here: www.adafruit.c...
    The soldering iron here: www.amazon.co....
    Let me know what you think, if you have any questions, tips, advice or other projects you think I should try!
    Thanks!

    Just a FYI cross threading is when you tighten i screw or bolt till the teeth/threads on it deform. What you are referring is is strip/stripping which is there you basically grind the thole down by using the wrong size screwdriver

    A USB-C port would work wonders for these devices, if only it were a bit more simpler. I would only consider it if it could go where the native charging port already is though, i wouldnt wanna do anything extra to my shell. Very neat and cool none the less.

    wonderful video! this was my first time soldering/repairing/modding anything! this video and blog post helped IMMENSELY! i used epoxy putty squished above and behind the usbc port to keep things tight
    one thing to add would be to remember to remove the plastic housing for the screw to the right of where the headphone jack was. this makes it level :>

    In case you didn't know if that glue is hot glue you can remove it by putting some isopropyl alcohol on it and waiting 5-10 seconds then pulling on it or nugen it to pop it off.

    I was able to do it, I also added some sponge pads on top (that I took from a package wrap) to make everything stay tighter together and fill up the spaces, same on the back to avoid dust formation where the original port was. Btw thanks for the vido it was very helpful, in particular the part about the idea of extracting the cables from an unused/broken USB cable and the part where you have provided some tips on how to desolder the headphone jack. I have a question, after some years of use how did the port hold up to this days?

  • @gammaphonic
    @gammaphonic 2 года назад +1

    A couple of resistors aren't going to change any incoming voltage to the 4.6 volts the 3DS is designed to handle. If you plug this into a laptop style PD supply and for whatever reason it sends 18 volts or something, that is going to fry this board and likely your 3DS along with it.
    You might as well have used a smaller board to replace the standard power in connector ad kept your headphone output.

    • @CameronHarrisWood
      @CameronHarrisWood  2 года назад +2

      Interesting! It on my MacBook Pro charger, but do you think thats because its a PD compliant charger, and not the resistors pulling down the voltage? I wouldn’t use anything with a non PD charger anyway, but these are all ways of protecting my devices, resistors or PD chargers

  • @Azari_D
    @Azari_D 3 года назад +4

    I’m always nervous to not use the AC adapter that Nintendo provides with devices as cool as this would be and fun to do. I know even if you were to do something like this with maybe lightning or something to the switch it doesn’t actually request the right amount of power. So standard usb c chargers will damage the switch battery without their proprietary AC adapter, that’s why those TP docks are damaging peoples batteries

    • @Dreadpirateflappy
      @Dreadpirateflappy 2 года назад +2

      except the new 3ds/2ds didn't even come with an AC adapter...

    • @drizzdrazz
      @drizzdrazz 8 месяцев назад

      the switch is different man, can really say what the did with the switch they also did with the 3ds, as the switch has to be both a handheld, and able to be docked to play on the tv so it has some weird protocols for the power adapter, hence why you dont really want to use third party docks because they dont have the right protocols and will brick your switch over time.

    I just can't wrap my head around why you didn't just put the USB C port where the original port was.... You can fit it there if you use a little bit of ingenuity

    • @CameronHarrisWood
      @CameronHarrisWood  4 года назад +3

      AndehX I tried this, but it wouldn’t fit because of the battery unfortunately! If you open up your 3DS and try it, you’ll see it doesn’t fit. You could use an inferior USB C port but that would require you to only charge via USB A to USB C and be limited to small wattage chargers, kind of defeating the point of USB C’s benefits
