Surely one of the greatest guitar songs of all time? Knopfler is a master of the finger picking style and the Strat, and what a performance here from Terry on drums as well - the band were so tight on this one - great stuff - this doesn't get enough reactions, so kudos to you for doing this one

Yes, they were teasing the audience, which probably had a large percentage of guitarists in it. The guitar lick that he doesn't play until 11:41 on the video was the culmination of the single on that song, which was their first hit. So they took forever getting around to playing it until the song was almost over. I bet seeing that lick played live was a major reason many amateur guitarists in the crowd were there, and it looked for a while like he wasn't going to play it, but he finally did. A big hit they had later (with Sting also on vocals) was "Money For Nothing".

I was there-amazing! The NEC in Birmingham tho’. They never played differently because it was being filmed but it was a World tour so they did change songs to prevent boredom I expect. My boyfriend was a pianist & bet me that Alan Clark wouldn’t be able to play several keyboards simultaneously, but he did. Someone should have told John not to dance though! I still go to Marks gigs,he may be getting on (as am I) but the music is still great. He writes & performs cos he loves it-very few interviews or publicity & unfortunately he’s likely to one of the last great musicians. See him while you can.

I've had the DVD of this concert forever. Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands, & they were really on fire for this great concert. Especially the drummer with mad skills. He is Terry Williams. He came on one of these videos recently & commented that he is still "banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee," which is a line from their song Money For Nothing. They took part in the Live Aid concert, played Money For Nothing & Sultans of Swing. Lucky for them, they went on just before Queen. Nobody wanted to follow the guys that stole the show!

Some people say there's better finger picking guitarists than Mark knopfler and better bands but they were always in the top 1% but this Alchemy live performance on that night propelled them to I'd honestly say the best performance of all time. I've liked other live performances but this one is just insurmountable. There will be many other brilliant concerts but this one will always be the 1.

I see you like metal. I think you would like Night Witches by Sabaton, the lyrics video which has some pictures of the "Night Witches," a regiment of female Russian pilots during WWII, who flew bombing raids into Germany. They were young women mostly in their late teens & early 20s. Their planes were old plywood biplanes with canvas wings. They carried two bombs under the wings. They would idle the engines & glide in low & silently, but for the wind whirring in the wings, which sounded to the Germans like witches on broomsticks, hence the name. They were terrifying. By the time the Germans heard them it was too late. They would drop their bombs, restart their engines, & fly home to reload, several times a night. If a bomb got stuck, they would walk out on the wing & shake it loose. Crazy. OK, so I'm babbling, but thought you might enjoy the song if you knew what it was about. You probably know about Sabaton, anyway, as they are, I believe, Swedish.
