Mark Knopfler is hands down one of the Most underrated and overlooked guitarists of all time. He's an absolute master of the instrument.
I agree.. underrated by many.. the man is so smooth.. in my opinion one of the best.. check out Clapton's reactions to his playing.. they jamed together several times back in the day on big time event stages..
I wouldn't say that he's underrated. He's seen as one of the best guitarrists in the world, mentioned alongside names like Brian May, Gary Moore and Hendrix.
PREACH!
@Evyatar Hadar If I recall correctly, in the early 1990's... the great Chet Akins, one of the best guitarist out there and acknowledged as such across the genres...said that Mark Knopfler was one of the best he ever encountered - that was pretty much instant god-level for Mark...lol. When one of the greatest says something like that about another talent, people sit up and listen.
Terry Williams ever more underrated, the fact he’s so unknown and only Dire Straits fans only know him is unbelievable
Love your reaction to one of my favourite bands - I'm 69 and listened to them a thousand times and they still never fail to move me.
All of them are superlative, and the drummer . .oh the drummer, have mercy.
Ya he was just killing those drums
The drummer is Terry Williams and the story goes that his father was in the audience and was seeing him play live for the first time.
Well Terry's father would've bin very proud in other words Terry's dad was blessed
Check out his drumming on Rockpile's only 'official' album "Seconds Of Pleasure" (1980), a mini-super group featuring Nick Lowe (bass/vocals), Dave Edmunds (vocals/guitar) and Billy Bremner (guitar/vocals). Definitely check it out if you like a little rockabilly/R&B/new wave sound, you won't be disappointed!
In this review, Marks look over at the lead with a "Terry is fucking amazing tonight man!".
I`ve watched most drummers closely for around 50 years, this is hands down my most watched version of any tune or performance and its mainly because of Williams. A rarity and an absolute pleasure to witness a musician so in tune with his craft and those around him. 11/10.
The drummer left me stunned.
They were rockstars already when this version was recorded but the drummers Father had never seen him play with Dire Straits before this concert in 1983. So I think therefore the drummer Terry Williams brought His playiing to the next level for sure ;)
The drummer was outstanding!
Brilliant drummer
I love that smile from Mark Knopfler at the end. Such a talent. But your right, Terry Williams made this song great.
Terry Williams is an absolute beast of a drummer
Mark Knopfler wrote the words and music, arranged it, sang it and played his guitar as only he can, everything from this masterpiece came from Mr Knopfler.
He's just turned the young age of 73 and was still touring up until 2019.
The mans a GENIUS...
Before streaming, i always gave youngsters ( i am 46 years now ) at their birthday the Dire Straits Alchemy album to learn what great music is. And everyone who got this birthday gift thanked me greatly for it.
Well done, sir.
Dire Straits - Heavy Fuel
A great song
Yep, I've loved Dire Straits for around 40 years ... and the drummer steals the show in this performance.
So I agree on how amazing the drummer is
Fun fact about Mark Knopfler. He plays guitar without a pick.
And is world class- like Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Robert Johnson, Son House, Woody Guthrie, and a long list of other old-school Olympian guitarists.
Fun fact about Mark Knopfler. He occasionally plays guitar with a pick. ;)
Fun fact he uses a plectrum
He's a lefty who plays a right handed guitar ... remarkable guitarist!
@@jjc5407 lol you just gotta love these idiots who have no clue at all come out with these BS fun facts hey
When I was 17, back in 1983 I went to see Dire Straights, at Hammersmith.
We didn't know how special this was until 39 years later.
OMG it was fantastic, but didn't realise at the time.
We didn't think it could be as good live, we were wrong. I remember that it was better!
Good times
u musta bin pissed unt Drugghes 💊 💉¿¿¿
Just found your channel. Glad you liked Terry Williams on drums. He was amazing. Dire Straits we’re part of my youth. 50+ years well spent.
These are far from "simple" instrumentals sister. The drumming and guitar playing is incredibly difficult and very very advanced lo. Mark Knopfler is a legendary guitar player and these are top of the line musicians.
I agree with you on this, the drummer was great he is one of the best, I just love Dire Straits this was one of the best live performance's I have ever seen the band is made up of top level musicians, thanks for your reaction,
The studio version is pretty darn good..few minutes shorter..but these guys live are as good as it gets. By the way..drummer Terry Williams was the tour drummer..not in the studio...and yes..he killed it.
Is that the Terry that played with Rockpile ?
@@highpath4776 Yes it is.. Along with Dave Edmonds.
Terry Williams played on the Brother´s In Arms studio lp.
I would say that Dire Straits was one band that really shines in their live performances.
@@chuckaspegren5528 He did, but they didn't use any of his playing and re recorded with a different drummer Would love to hear Terry's version.
Notice how closely the others in the group watch Mark and pick up on all his cues.
That musicianship right there.
Thanks for your reaction, and you are spot on, the drummer is TERRY WILLIAMS, an absolute star x
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making your living like that wouldn't suck.
Did she enjoy it? She looked bored to me.
Yes the drummer killed it big time
Tingling scalps all round. One of the greatest guitarists of all time.
One of the best live-performance with Dire Straits an Mark Knopfler ever- thank you "Jayy" all time from Germany for the good music!
The best guitarist in the world and the greatest song ever.
Have not this for a long time made the hair on the back of my neck stand up ammmmmmmmazing
😮 Wooow!!
'How simple the instrumental is!'
This is regarded as one of the Best(if not the Best,) live instrumental performances of all time.
Give urself a smack on the hand young Lady. 🤯
They make it look and sound simple because they are so damn good.
i know what she means tho. its sophisticated and simple at the same time
Saw these guys 1987 UK .. Obz great tunes .. wow .. Drums was my introduction to Drum & Bass ..
growing up in the 80s and 90s, my dad listened to a bunch of dire straits so mark knopfler was my first guitar hero. dad had this concert on VHS. dont know how many times i watched it. they were my gateway into metal lol.
One of the best guitar players...Mark Knopfler.
The drummer is remarkable. Watch this guy
Love Dire Straits
Love the drumming on this, wow, he is excellent, and of course, Marc on lead, cutting through it all, thanks!
Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitar players there has ever been. The drums in this were amazing. The studio version of this is really good.
The studio version has not got the GO this version has. But it is still good.
That drummer was on fire!
One of my all-time favorite bands! I even saw Knopfler play a show at the Murat in Indianapolis around 2005. One of the best shows ever. Try "Romeo & Juliet" and "Telegraph Road." Life-changing stuff!
I agree.. the drummer made this song in this particular concert..
Rock Fusion icons! Mark Knopfler is the king of understated guitar lyricism!
Man I love Dire Straits 🇬🇧😊🇬🇧
Honestly, I still can't get over the comment that he is underrated! By whom? He's near the top of every single poll and discussion of the greatest guitarists of all time!
I think the underrated comment isn't that he's not ranked highly, but the belief that his talent should place him even higher on the list than he is now.
i would recommend just about all their stuff, Mark Knopfler is a genius. Make sure its live
Mark Knopfler one of the greatest guitarists of all time 🙏
Romeo & Juliet next. - Dire Straits
Great reaction! Watching the smile creep over your face during the first guitar solo, and then the amazement by the time you get to the 3rd 😂
Truly you are right about the drummer, he is a big part of the difference between this and the studio version which has a different one. First time his dad was in the audience.
All the best 🍻
Girl you got it.very few today’s youth know who Mark is.If you want to fall in the Dire Strait rabbit hole, here is the list.Brothers in arms,Going Home,Privat investigation, once up on the time in the west,Song for Sonny Liston,Telegraph road,Money for nothing and and and, the list is to long for me to write.I hope, no I’m sure you gonna love it!!!
Simply phenomenal performance as always. A band in total harmony & lead guitar Mark Knopfler is a legend. But like you say, that drummer was more than a step above others.
Ahh......Sultans live!!! Thank you very much!!! They make it look so effortless and his extra gusto with the lyrics is such a great ride!!! 😺🖤
Mark Knopfler also wrote the song and arranged it, pure genus
One of the best guitarists ever to walk planet earth.
You get a shiver in the dark
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing"
thats rock and roll history folks
That was a jam. The drums are more subdued on their studio recordings, but the lyrics are easier to make out which matters because their songs often tell stories. "Skateaway", for example, tells a story about a roller skater making her way through busy streets listening to music through her headphones and pretending to be the star in her own movie: "And the music make her want to be the story \ And the story was whatever was the song, what it was..."
Skateaway is a gr8 song!
My first concert was Dire Straits. That’s how old I am.
It really says more about your good taste than about your age.
Hold my beer. Mine was Chicago Transit Authority. 😂
My first concert was Black Sabbath, early! That's how old I am!!
Mine too! 1985.
I am jealous! How cool!
Dire Straights have so many wonderful creations 🖤
Brothers in arms is an amazing song!
Made even better that it was banned in South Africa during the apartheid regime.
@@lavrentivs9891 was it, learn something new everyday
@@georgemeldrum4278 I have a live version of the song, where Mark Knopfler proudly presents that little bit of information before starting to play =)
Yep, especially the Mandela concert performance which is spine tinglingly good.
And the hit album off of the same name, Now that is double amazing
You might like 'Money for Nothing' or 'Walk of Life' from Dire Straits. Great songs.
The album cuts are so much better than the songs that got air play.
Yes amazing songs
Jayy I was definitely impressed by Terry on drums.. he took this song to a whole new dimension…I could see u were impressed by it…
" Telegraph road " by dire straits is a MUST listen
nothing about the guitar part is "simple". i've been playing guitar for almost 20 years now, since i was 10, and that song is still hard af
Tone and action are paramount. You need low action so your fretboard can land all those notes; and you need barking midrange so even the faintest landed note sounds out clearly.
Dire Straits incredible musicians and brilliant live. Great reaction as ever Jayy, thx
I like the way you called the most complex guitar playing ever, simple
Mark Knopfler plays with the old bluegrass style of finger picking that's how he gets that melodic sound that you hear from the guitar great reaction
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitar players in the world !!!!!!!
Your right he was amazing
You have to listen Romeo and Juliet.... what a love story....you will love it 😃😃
Easily one of the best love songs in Rock.
One of the top bands from the best decade for music the 80s
Nothing like watching a master at his trade......
Just witnessed greatness dam!!
The song came from a rainy day when Mark Knopfler dived into a pub to escape the rain. Playing inside was a jazz band and they were definitely mediocre. But they signed off their set with "We Are The Sultans Of Swing". The rest is history
The drumer is amazing !!!! mister Terry Wiliams
IMHO Dire Straits' masterpiece is Telegraph Road. You should try...
That album, Love Over Gold, is one of my all time favorites
Same album...Telegraph Road.. live...is amazing!
Dire Straits is a LIVE band!!!!
Welcome to the incredible music of Dire Straits, Jayy! This is easily their best track, but second from top is probably "Telegraph Road" (the studio version for this song is much better than any live version; the sound is far clearer). Next in line is perhaps "Tunnel of Love" (the live at Wembley in 1985 is the best version) -- links below:

As far as I'm concerned Mark knapfler is hands down one of the top 20 Greatest guitar players ever, The Sultans of Swing sound was so clean no distortion what so ever and Mark being a finger picker using no guitar picks the rhythm guitar and the drums had to be on point to get this song to work.
Agreed, Jayy . . .This tune has such a great coolness factor. I've always enjoyed it~
Some one asked Prince how it felt to be the best guitar player felt. Prince responded ask Mark Kopfloffer. There you go 💜
7:59 CHILLS...
It makes it so much better seeing how much they enjoy playing.
The most distinctive guitar sound in rock. Their masterpiece is "Telegraph Road", but they had a lot of great songs: "Water of Love", "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love"... or if you want shivers up and down your spine, try "Private Investigations". And yes, the drumming is great. Another band with a brilliant drummer you'd love is Blondie - have a listen to their song "Dreaming" and you'll see what I mean!
Saw Blondie 1979 in Manchester Clem Burke blew me away.
@@ClownAroundFilm Yea he is a great drummer, Loved when he was a session drummer for the: Eurythmics in the mid /late 80's
True band! Just boys jamming! Love it! Never saw the live version 😜
Just fabulous!
Mark Knopfler is the finger piching style Master. Plis react more Dire Straits . Next Telegraph road from Alchemy. Stay safe my friend
The Recorded Version is beautiful being my Favorite of all time songs in my 70 years of life. The Live performance which is the Long Version is just too awesome to be real, but Truth is before our eyes. They all played a role in this music, so I will not single out any single player yet I do have my unspoken favorite Drummer and Guitarist.
I have loved Dire Straits from the first time I heard way back. I love the sound Mark gets from his fingerpicking style of playing. Its amazing to see in videos how he doesn’t just use his pingers to pick with but he will deaden strings as well to keep it all a clean sound. And watch any of their concert videos and there isn’t a bad song from start to finish. Thanks for playing them and the reaction!
If you want to know more about Terry Williams you can watch the documentary called “Just the drummer in the band”
If a group of giants formed a rock and roll band, they would have been named Dire Straits.
Your right. That damn drummer!!!
"Walk Of Life" Mark Knopfler -Dire Straiits
Yes, the drums...
The studio version is great too but much softer. Perfect "road trip" song
Not heard 'Heavy Fuel' for a while. That song so underrated.
U gave props to DRUMMER and GUITAR !! SO I GIVE PROPS TO U !! 😆 hehe Sweeeeet !! Luvmesome DS !! 😆
Their 'brothers in arms' album is a masrerpeice👌
Don’t forget he uses his fingers and not a pleck 🇬🇧😘
he is one of the best drummers out there. you should check out "Going Home" also from the same live release
