Mark Knopfler (red jacket) is the genius of the band, songwriter/performer/storyteller and one of the world's truly great guitarists, and a massive shout out to Terry Williams on drums too! 🙋♂🙋♂ Nothing beats live music when it's performed at this level. Nothing.

Easily one of the greatest live songs of all time. This is epic and back in the day I wasn't a big fan of Dire Straits. So having seen this relatively recently for the first time it blew me away and I keep watching it over and over. Wow

To answer your headline question, they are Dire Straits, one of the best live bands of the last 50 years. Try "Telegraph Road" from the same gig.
I love Pink Floyd live but the sheer passion and energy is something at 67,never ever ceases to amaze me,and whatabout mr Williams showing off to his father in the audience,how brilliant he hits those drums

I was at Hammersmith when this was filmed, 40 years later its still the best
Terry Williams on the drums was amazing, but he always plays like that, so I'm not sure if the story about his father being in the audience is entirely true, it may have been the first time he'd seen him play with Dire Straits, he was in the band MAN before and after this, he must have seen him play before... He always played flat out!
The whole place was jumping, I was on the balcony, we thought it was going to fall down!
Now you have to react to telegraph Road, it was the encore and it was amazing
PLEASE !!!! you must now look at Telegraph Road from the same LIVE album (Alchemy ) if you think this is good - Telegraph Road will blow your mind. My own personal opinion is that this is probably the greatest live recording of all time !

Sorry, not the best live performance ever, as so many say. Song was overplayed to the max. Yes, amazing talent but not a great representation of the song.
I was a full time working adult when this song hit the UK airwaves. I have the albums and have enjoyed every live version including this one. My guess, everyone in the audience was not expecting any less. It is as good as it gets. It's rock and roll.
