I agree. This was MK at his peak (playing wise) in this performance he took his guitar to the limit. If it was a racing car the engine would have blown up before the end. Some great guitarists have got amazing skills and can impress us but every note Mark plays is purely for the song and nothing about showing off.

The Drummer, Terry Williams is from my home city, I'm only pointing that out as hardly anyone comes from Swansea. I met him one in the late 90's as his band was playing in the Workingmans club that my dad ran in Port Talbot, he very nicely signed my copies of Alchemy, Brothers IN Arms and a Meat Loaf album he was on called Deadringer. An amazing drummer and a gentleman.

The best part about Knopfler and Sultans is that he doesn't know what the solo is going to be before he plays it. There are some key staple bits he keeps each performance, but he just improvises for 75% of it and it's always so good.

I was born in 1960 , in 1977 I was 17 years old and bought their debut self-titled album on a whim . I was in the record store just browsing . Picked it up and brought it home . Put it on , the house was empty , cranked it and I was instantly hooked . The album from start to finish was incredible . Sultans of swing was the big hit but the rest of the album was ... I just kept playing it over and over . Bought the cassette for the car , got my friends hooked too . I saw them twice live . Once for the Brother's in Arms tour and The Telegraph Road tour . I was a foot off the ground , smooth incredible guitar work by Mark Knopfler . He wrote all the songs , all the music and IMHO he's the greatest guitarist not named Hendrix . He's never even in the conversation . I'm so glad you're listening to this now , makes me so happy you've rediscovered what I found so many years ago . Awesome video , you seem sincere . Chris

    Good reaction
Great that you picked up on the drummer on your first hearing.
I grew up listning to this song and only in later years came to apprecate just how amazing he is.

@JBLETHAL TV. Looked like you really enjoyed Mark Knopfler's guitar playing and Terry Williams on the drums. I rock out to this song every day when I get home from work. Great song, great band. Keep up the great work and keep the video's coming.

I just discovered you today, and I think I’m going to be going down the rabbit hole you mention, but with your videos. I’m having fun clicking on all the songs you’ve reacted to that are also songs I feel passionate about.

I enjoy your video's more than anybody else doing this! You show a love for music and tell it like it is. Plus you are not constantly stopping playback every 20 seconds. I subscribed. Thanks.

You are right, the drums keep the flow and everyone on track. The guitars work so beautifully together. Best version of this song.

Man, you should try "Telegraph road" from this concert. Their best song in its best version

Gotta agree with you on that! Telegraph was a masterpiece, and the Alchemy version of it showcases them playing with a bit more practice than they had on the studio version. Don't get me wrong, the studio version was great, but very slightly 'clunky' sounding. They play it better on Alchemy probably because they had more experience playing it at that point.

Alchemy overall was a concert where the band just gave everything they had. I mean, almost all of their bests- Telegraph Road, Tunnel Of Love and of course Sultans of Swing- reach new peaks. I'm extremely glad we had Alchemy; truly a special concert.

I first heard this song when I was 19 yrs old. That was close to 50 years ago. This version is magic and it still leaves me breathless and amazed all these years later. You are right, you just don't want it to end.

@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt There are many fine musical people and talents out there, but Mark has written the soundtrack of my life. Long time fans like Carlos and I just love new generations discovering him like this. For those of you new to Mark Knopfler ... look to his excellent body of work beyond Dire Straits. Start with the fabulous "Sailing to Philadelphia" album with masterworks like "It is what it is" and "Speedway at Nazareth".

JB - I enjoyed watching your reaction to this great performance of one of DS’s classics. If you haven’t, you should also listen to the studio version, as the lyrics, which tell a story and are just as important as the music, are easier to hear. Keep on learning and enjoying all the great music I was lucky enough to grow up with! Best wishes from Vancouver Island

Glad we have the same opinion on the drummer, Terry Williams. Dude was a monster on the drums, easily made Alchemy one of their best live shows. Honestly, that crew right there is one I would drop hundreds to see live.
    Mark Knopfler
    John Illsley
    Terry Williams
    Hal Linds
    Alan Clar
    Mel Collins
    Plus add
    Guy Fletcher
Sadly Mark doesn't want to do a reunion, just wants to go solo.

The drummer must be one of the greatest of all times. And might be the most underrated drummer. He is as much talented as Mark is on the gitarr but on drums. I love the bass lines too. Everything is insanely good 💯
