You should do a video on Argentina's missing generations: potential teams that could've won the WC in the past and players who should have been over looked during those times. Do one on Italy as well.
Well thats dumb idea. Many videos can be done on teams who could've won the world cup as the possiblities are endless hypothethically speaking. Whether you have the better players isnt always guaranteed you'll win otherwise netherlands wouldve won it plenty of times and belgium as well amd so on. The world cup as many others have said requires a bit of luck as well. Also if youre a country that started in thr world cup or got into football earlier then pthrr nations you'll mot likely be better. No suprise Argentina is great or better then the US my country because thr Argentinians have been playing in the world cup for a lomg time whereas the US only just recently even started to take football seriously. Needless to say football here or soccer is not even pur top 4 biggest sports. Theres actually a video on that . The teams who started to play football earlier amd participate in the world cup longer have better results overall then Nigeria or morocco or US and so on. More experience. Its like if a brought baseball to Argentina and excpected them to do well against the US. We would win easily for obvious reasons
The 2006 team should’ve gone further. 2010 and 2018 were some of the worst, and in 2014 they played a lot better than anyone expected. It was a miracle they got to the final, and almost beat Germany. That team was so weak compared to the 2022 team
I was actually at the hotel Belgium used as base camp in June 2022 (The Hilton Salwa resort). As I was leaving after a 3 day stay, I saw Belgian FA staff but no players or Roberto Martinez. Gianni Infantino was there with them though for some reason. (Also Brazil and Serbia trained a few kilometers away from where I used to live in Qatar)
Maxwell you've done it again. Another brilliant video essay. I hate to ask you for another one so soon but I'd love for you to at least consider doing a video at some point on the Mexican national team and their legacy of failure, especially after their disappointing 2022 world cup run. Again though, keep it up dude, I'm always looking forward to your new videos Edit: I saw someone mention The Netherlands and I think they should prob also be considered lol

I think Belgium did pretty well for a small country. Belgium is a very small country and compared to the U.S., China and India their team has always been successful.
No, it hasn't. Football is BY FAR the most popular sport for young players to play in Belgium. This means that the best young athletes there all play football. China is the only one of the three you mentioned that is fair. They have invested tons of money and made improvement of their national team a national priority...only to have the team get worse. Even there, football isn't actually the most popular sport basketball is. In India, they are crazy for cricket and field hockey...and dominate both. The best athletes there play those. As for the US...well, there is American football. The biggest, strongest and fastest athletes play that. Add to this basketball and baseball take more of the best athletic talent. Those that are left play soccer (a sport played by those too small, weak and lacking in hand/eye coordination to play American football, basketball or baseball)...then are expected to compete on International level at football. Not a good combination.
@@brianeleighton the US is a country of 330mil for ffs. It produces plenty of gold medalists in all sorts of obscure ass sports each Olympics That USMNT is terrible at soccer runs much deeper than just "oh just not the best athletes"
@@marcofujimoto Yes, it shows the priority of people in the US. Those obscure sports in the Olympics get more resources than soccer does at every rung of the grassroots level. Also, many of the medals the US get come from the events like track and field. Why? Because there are plenty of American football players that also run track in the offseason. They go to college on a football scholarship and compete in track to stay in shape. Look at the sprint speed of wide receivers who go into professional football in the US. Now, bear in mind if a player is super fast but doesn't have the size or hands to be a professional player, they can try out for the US Olympic team. The fact is that the kids who are the best athletes do not play soccer in the US. The tiny kid who can't play American football, basketball, baseball or ice hockey does. They are then expected to compete with football mad nations where it is literally the only major sport and every kid dreams of growing up to be a footballer. The cream of the crop get trained at the youth level and so the men's team is literally the best athletes your country has to offer. The US has every kid dreaming of playing in the NFL, NBA, NHL or in MLB. Those sports get the cream of the crop of young athletes, soccer gets the dregs. The men's team then has 3rd or 4th tier talent at best. The thing a lot of the obscure Olympic events have in common is they are largely individual sports, not team sports. There are many very good athletes who have absolutely zero interest in participating in a team sport where they have to deal with teammates. For those athletes, they would have zero interest in football even if it was the primary team sport in the US. Edit: Also, American football even poaches talent from American soccer. Pat McAfee is a perfect example. He was actually a very good soccer player growing up. He competed in a punt/pass/kick competition, won it and was offered a scholarship to the University of West Virginia as a kicker/punter. He then got drafted into the NFL and played a professional career as a punter.
@@brianeleighton you're not wrong but there's zero reason the US shouldn't be able to field a top 5 men's soccer team. Athleticism is an easy but cheap excuse. The (shitty) development program in this country is a bigger factor, imo
Tbf I think all italians agree on saying that Doku against Italy looked like freakin' Pelé, he's definitely the most brilliant talent of the current Belgium team
20:49 can we appreciate how much more competitive this group would've been if it had been ten years later? Even North Macedonia could get their licks in these days.
Hazard aged incredibly fast in terms of his decresing skills, De Bruyne is still good as well a Courtois yet they had troubles in performing for the national team and Lukaku turned into Lakaka. Feels like Kompany was the heart and soul of this national team. Once he was gone eveything started crumbling down.

Don't worry about things not being as on schedule as you hoped! We all get things wrong from time to time as humans, and variables out of your control can change things! This video essay is worth the wait regardless!
I’d love to see the rise of Croatia as a national team
@@dante6055 what ?
But Belgium 🇧🇪 is better than Croatia 🇭🇷 😏
@@dante6055 Whats your prediction with Belgium? Will they win any titles in the foreseeable future?
@@dante6055 Hahaha im joking as well, I really hope we get a World Cup trophy one day :)
@@dante6055 as a dutchman I'm hopeful but sceptical we had 3 chances to win it
Bro I didn’t expect a one hour Belgium review. Great work with the video essay keep it up. 💚
Thanks!
Funny vid, but wished you would’ve given a slight recap of their 2021 loss in the Nations League semis. I don’t think any loss quite encapsulated the Belgians’ luck like that one. Yes, it’s a lesser tournament, but it was still an opportunity to win an official trophy. And they failed to do so, despite even being up 2-0 at one point.
Yeah looking back it woulda at least been good to mention that tournament
Maqwell is the only RUclipsr that can make me watch an hour long video all the way through
another video which ill always watch before ill go sleep, great work man
Much love man!
@@Maqwell is there any chance of a video about Romania being done? I ask because you responded some time ago that you'll add it to the list 😭
41:25 I still have nightmares of that counter attack
I just realized, the team that beat Japan in the round of 16 beats Brazil in the Quaters, twice in a row
You're the man to put game and anime ost to this football video and I'm just listening to it like a podcast. Man you're the goat. You earned this sub.❤
Personally, I think an Australian national team essay would be interesting. Truly a unique team and history and recent resurgence in its ability, with finally some good prospects to give hope after our own golden generation
Australia is starting to look good. 2022 was by far our best team since 2006. And the current rankings are australias best since the late 2000s. Not to mention the amount of talent we have now aswell, Kuol, irankunda, jordy bos
Just started and already know it’s gonna be a banger!!!
As a Belgian, great to go through memory lane again. Great video essay man! First time seeing a video of yours and I liked the mix of seriousness and memes. Keep up the good work and keep an eye out for some of our new talents such as Onana, Bakayoko and Openda ;).
Welcome to the channel man! Also definitely excited to see what the new crop can do in 2026
New to this channel and did not see that Cam Newton reference coming, but always glad to come across enjoyers of both footballs
As a broncos fan living in NC, I never let people hear the end of it lol
@@chrislouis7913 2006 every national team was stacked as hell sweden, portugal, Germany, france, spain, italy, Ukraine, brazil, Czech republic, England
you're a great storyteller man! didn't believe i'd watch an hour long doc and be upset when it was done lol
Thank you so much!
this is such an excellent video. well done.
Appreciate it!
FIFA has to help reserve hotels for the teams, since they have to cover part of the cost. That’s likely why Infertino was there
@@m.c.martin good to know
As a Belgian, it pains me that my other nationality (Greek) won more
That’s not true bro
Very nice cover and especially all the sources where you found things like Guardian Eurosport etc etc etc
Maxwell you've done it again. Another brilliant video essay. I hate to ask you for another one so soon but I'd love for you to at least consider doing a video at some point on the Mexican national team and their legacy of failure, especially after their disappointing 2022 world cup run. Again though, keep it up dude, I'm always looking forward to your new videos
Edit: I saw someone mention The Netherlands and I think they should prob also be considered lol
Much love man! Yeah mexico has been highly requested for quite some time so I’ll definitely conjure something up in the future
thank you for making a lot of quality videos, you are very underrated youtuber B-))

Great video as always. A suggestion would be to cover the Portuguese national team and all there short comings and how they themselves are entering into a sort of golden generation!
i’m so glad that you’re finally gonna talk about chinese football. it’s frustrating that every club i cheer for keeps collapsing in china 🤦🏻♀️

1 hour of Maqwell, what can possibly go wrong?
Also Team Fortress 2 music in this essay thats class
they pretty much had around 2 tournament's with their golden generation and failed and now they have a completely different team i honestly think they missed their one chance to get silverware
I bet $100 on Belgium to win the 2014 WC at 500-1 in 2012. I watched every qualifying game and told everyone I know that DeBruyne would be the greatest MF in the world. It’s been fun but also a nightmare

@@brianeleighton didn't read
@@brianeleighton the US is a country of 330mil for ffs. It produces plenty of gold medalists in all sorts of obscure ass sports each Olympics
That USMNT is terrible at soccer runs much deeper than just "oh just not the best athletes"
The (shitty) development program in this country is a bigger factor, imo
whos here after they lost to Slovakia at the Euros
2018 Belgium squad was peak greatness. Best team at the Erik’s cup and very unlucky against France

for your information; the clip at 13:55 is from switzerland. quöllfrisch is a swiss beer (appenzell)
The boos haunt theme from Mario 64 when a team is bottling always kills me🤣
Hazard aged incredibly fast in terms of his decresing skills, De Bruyne is still good as well a Courtois yet they had troubles in performing for the national team and Lukaku turned into Lakaka. Feels like Kompany was the heart and soul of this national team. Once he was gone eveything started crumbling down.
as belgium/finnish person the some of the comments are kinda disrespectful on belgiums team its a amazing team to think how small our country is belgium didnt impress in the 2022 wc i cried after we went out put we have a new manager and we are improving pls put some respect on belgiums team as in the 2018 wc we beat many big countries and gave fight to france and we deserved better against france

@@MrRanaVenenosa uruguay is still bigger than belgium and they won it in 1930 and 1950 when the world cup was way smaller than it is now
