A bit of a shame, that Maqwell forgot to talk about Germany's participations at the Confederations Cup 2005 (They were allowed to participate because of being next World Cup hosts) and 2017 (They were allowed to participate because of being World Champions). Might not have had any significance, but both tournaments showed the problems and potentials of the German NT for their next respective world cups. While Germany finished 3rd Place (Bronze) at home after a wild match for 3rd Place against Mexico (4:3 aet) and proved their mental strength against their opponents, Germany conceded very many goals when playing against its opponents, letting many wishes for the Defense open and not fully eliminating all doubts yet. The Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia, the last edition of this mini world cup up to date, was the third participation for Germany, where they took their B-Team with the likes of among others Goretzka, Ter Stegen and Stindl to the tournament. The reason was to leave most players from the A-Team out and allow them to rest during the summer break, while also giving more players a chance to get nominated for the next world cup. Despite Germany's defense was also not the best one and Ter Stegen letted more goals into the back of the net than Bayern Munich leaving Dortmund chances to win the Bundesliga last season, the B-Team managed to get it done and defeating Australia 3-2, drawing 1-1 to Chile and then winning Group B after a 3-1 Win over Cameroon. The semi against Mexico was, unlike 2005, a pretty one-sided match where they dumped the North Americans 4-1 (they lost 3rd place to Portugal afterwards 1-2 aet bruh). Germany on the other hand went to their first final in the Confederations Cup and defeated Chile after a fatal mistake by the Goalkeeper early in the first half 1-0. Stindl ended up being Top scorer of the tournament, who also scored the winning goal in the final. The Win of the Confederations Cup with the B-Team was very likely another major factor, why the horrible World Cup campaign a year later was the more shocking.
It was THE key game for turning the revolution of the goalkeeper position mainstream in a breath taking way. Everyone in Germany sees the game as the Manuel Neuer Masterclass which defined his career.
I'm of Argentine descent and I remember rooting for the Germans for the last 6 years and during the 2022 FIFA WC 😭😭 I have a kinda small connection with one of the players (Leroy Sané specially) because his wife; I used too spoke to her on Snapchat lol is from my home state (California) and from the local county (San Bernadino county) where I was raised however I watched Germany for the whole squad.
man it's such a shame what happened to our nationalteam after 2014 because we have so many really good players like havertz, kimmich, rüdiger, musiala, wirtz, sane, their problem is that somehow they all play like they don't care playing for the colours, for the badge , but tbh. i still got hope that we some day come back with big talents like newly called up Aleksander Pavlovic , musiala, wirtz and others
51:58 funfact regarding Pawel Janas is that he didn't even called Champions League winner Jerzy Dudek for the World Cup 2006, same goes with Tomasz Frankowski (who was like Polish Jordan Pefok at the time) and Bartosz Bosacki who ironically scored the only 2 goals for Poland in this World Cup as he was a sub for unfortunatly injured Damian Gorawski. I know, Maqwell moaning about Gregg Berhalter calls for USMNT for the World Cup 2022 was hilarious, but Paweł Janas calls for World Cup 2006 are on a different level, believe it or not. Edit: Poland National Team - legacy of failure video really begs to be made.

As a German I can say, that I used to believe that no generation could ever be worse than the one between 1998 and 2004, but I was so wrong... Since the World Cup 2018 the German Football has been being in the darkest age in their history. The difference is, that in the begin of the 2000s, the Germans didn't have a lot of talents besides Ballack and Kahn. Even Klose was just an average player at that time, so it was really dificult to achieve something with this lack of talent. But now we have so many talents and top players like Neuer, Rüdiger, Kroos, Müller, Wirtz, Musiala, Gündogan and yes, even Kimmich is doing much better than our former Players 20 years ago, and they were still able to be knocked out in the World Cup Group stages twice in a row, which it didn't happen before.
I felt that since 2012, Joachim Löw overstayed his welcome. We didn't win 2014 because of him IMO, we won in spite of him. Perhaps the spirit of Campo Bahía, combined with a modern golden generation? Anyway, once Oliver Bierhoff started that "Die Mannschaft" gimmick, that's where we finally jumped the shark. And it's a good thing that Neuendorf killed "Die Mannschaft". If the upcoming Euro doesn't change anything, then we may face the worst case scenario that Italy has faced twice in a row: Das Aus in der WM-Qualifikation.
@@bundesautobahn7 Nah thats not true, honestly without Löw we would have never won the World Cup in 2014. It was him that got inspired by the Tiki Taka Football from Spain and it was him that let the Germans play on quick counter attacks, which was their biggest strength at that time. I think until 2017 everything seemed to be fine, because they could have also won the EUROS in 2016, but it was just bad luck against the hosts France. I think the political and social pressure from 2018 was too much hitting on that team, especially on Özil, and the country didn't really focus on the game but on him and the picture with Erdogan. In 2021 it was the rainbow discussion and in 2022 once again. But don't get me wrong, I also stand against racism and homophobia and I also pretected Özil and Gündogan back in 2018. I think the biggest problem was the bad communication from the DFB, especially from Bierhoff and Grindel. And what was also a big factor for the misery in the past few years is the odd talent system. I mean, besides Musiala and Wirtz, we almost have no special dribbling players in our team, and yes, even Germany used to have them, like Mehmet Scholl, Bernd Schneider, Ansgar Brinkmann or Mesut Özil, but the Youth performance centers of today don't really train those abilities anymore, because they think, that teamwork and condition would be much more important, which is probably true, but that doesn't mean that it's unnecessary to train it.
Regarding the DEFCON 1 joke: As a Brazilian, I didn't understood why Poland is in our group. I get the Malvines/Falkland thing with Argentina and England (where Brazil sold guns for both back then) but I'm scratching my head over Poland being there.
Kroos wouldn't have really slipped through without the "Reboot". The thing is that Hansa Rostock (who were in the Bundesliga at the time) wanted Kroos' father Roland as a coach for their youth academy as he did the job for Greifswalder FC very successfully and he was welcome to bring his two talented sons Toni and Felix (who went on to play for Werder and Union) into the club. Roland works for Greifswald again by the way (after leading the Hansa youth academy to a German U19 title in 2010) and just missed out on relegation to the 3rd League.
Im putting this in another comment: What a fantastic video. Probably the best comprehensive video about german football ive ever seen. Respects from Germany brother
There are some little inaccuracies here and there, but overall... WOW!!! Very well done video about the history of Germany and the history of German football. Congratulations! Not only recognizing the effort that you'd put into this, but also for the quality of the video.
Pretty good anaysis. I have another point why german recrutememt isnt working. The only way into top football is through the 150ish NLZ's. Players outside of these ranks have nearly no chance of getting into the top tier when there isnt a godd coach or scout involved which gets him up the tiers. Examples where it worked out are Niklas Füllkrug Jan-Niklas Beste (he could be a wild card for the Euros because he is such a talented Free-Kick taker) Deniz Undav (i personaly remember him playing against my team in the german 3rd tier)
shouldve mentioned in the brazil vs germany 2014 that the only reason it was 7-1 and not more was because the team was told to chill out at half time just out of empathy
This has been one of my favorite videos to date. I’ll be visiting Germany for the Euros and as interested as I am in German culture & history in general, this was incredibly insightful for the Football culture and history that I undoubtedly will witness first hand. Kudos for doing such a fantastic job putting this all together and giving us all exceptional context to an already challenging period in the countries sport. You’re the best Maqwell!
Well as a german i feel qualified to say that the current state of the DFB and Die Mannschaft is horrific. Germany has world class players and world class coaches (yes i counted Hansi Flick as world class coach cus he won a freaking sextuple with a great but still not the best team in club football at the time) yet still we fumble our way trough international games. Thinking back at the 0:2 against Austria last year which was the worst internation game i watched in my live made me feel ashamed of what has become of my Mannschaft. With Nagelsmann leaving after the Euros i can't even see it getting better in the near future. I'm sure that Germany won't get out of the group Stages in the Euros and even if they do then they are going to fail in the round of 16 like last time. Just thinking of another disapointing turnament performance makes me sad. Hopefully it will get better. With all the young german talents and a proper Coach who combines the strenght of his players instead of forcing them into his sytem Germany can be great again one day...
Finally, another Maqwell's breathtaking essay videos regarding the failures of big teams. Would be hillarious to make England's national team (since 1966) as well. Some important infos (there were too many comments, but I will add missing ones: 1.52:49 Jens Lehmann had a good performance during the 2005/06 season, which is the reason Klinsmann favoured him in the World Cup. His performance with Arsenal during the Champions League was insane that the North London team had a clean sheet in 10 games up until the Final against Barcelona in Paris, at which he was disgracefully sent off for the reckless tackle with Samuel Eto'o. Lehmann had even denied Roman Riquelme's penalty in dying minutes that would have sent the 2nd leg tie of semifinal against Villarreal into the extra time. In fact, Arsenal should have won the Champions League if Lehmann didn't sent off! 1.1:20:19 While it's a clearly off-topic, I would also mention out that the women's football of Germany were in the shambolic form. Even though they had recently qualified for the next Olympics through the Nations League results, the women's team had some dreadful form, particularly the last Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Despite beating Morocco 6-0 in the opening game, they surprisingly lost to Colombia and were eliminated after failing to beat South Korea and Morocco beat Colombia to leapfrog Germans. They also had a bad luck in the last 2 Womens Euros, even losing to England in the most recent Womens Euro Final at Wembley. Not to mention, they had some shock results in friendlies, such as losing 2-3 to newcomer Zambia.
@@GuntherSDoumson2178 They played so well at that time, even supported by home fans, plus Patrick Kluivert factor. The 2010 World Cup was also the biggest bottlejob for Holland. Being supreme against Brazil and Uruguay, they ended up playing anti-football vs Spain in the Final, as Johan Cruyff said. It could have been even worse for Holland if De Jong was red carded.
A good sign but I'd like to see consistency so more wins in the near future hopefully. We need a number 9 with a killer instinct still, and the defence is still looking patchy.
I wouldn't worry too much. German football tends to bounce back and forth every other generation. They went from being super dominant in the 80s, reaching three World Cup Finals in a row (winning the third one) in 1982, 86 and finally champions in 1990. Then in the 90s they were completely inconsequential, with forgettable World Cups in 1994 and 1998. Then in the 2000s they again became important, and now they are falling off again. Just look at the years Germany won a World Cup, 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. See how far away each year is from one another? Just give it 5 or 10 more years, and Germany will become a powerful force again and most likely win a 5th world cup.
Well as a Scot. I have full respect for Germany 🇩🇪 in the opening game of the Euros no matter what the result is. Hope it’s great for both teams 🤝🏴

The fact that Peru just couldn't even draw against the worst Germany in years while many others successfully beat it shows just how horribly rough its Reynoso era was.
It wasn't just the Özil-Gündogan scandal that was going on at the time. There was also a political discussion about whether the Germans should show their flag or not. And I think they changed the name of the 'German national team' to 'the team', which pissed off a lot of Germans. It was a dark time for German football and I am very glad that the last European Football Championship was so much fun. For me, it was as if the whole country had changed and that was nice. 🇩🇪 ⚽️

Stindl ended up being Top scorer of the tournament, who also scored the winning goal in the final.
The Win of the Confederations Cup with the B-Team was very likely another major factor, why the horrible World Cup campaign a year later was the more shocking.
That 2014 Germany v Algeria game was one of the best games of football I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget it.
Yeah we put a good game against Germany lot of chances great football
It was THE key game for turning the revolution of the goalkeeper position mainstream in a breath taking way. Everyone in Germany sees the game as the Manuel Neuer Masterclass which defined his career.
that game was basically Neuer vs Algeria. Neuer literally became famous for sweeper keeping cause of that. Awesome match
Manuel Neuer
I feel like they were our toughest opponent that world cup, I know Argentina was barely won but Algeria had us on our back foot.
I cant believe the famous Eistonne didn't get a mention
wir sind sowas von zurück jungs und mädels
Edit: Poland National Team - legacy of failure video really begs to be made.
the biggest hope for the short future is the squad nagelsmann nominated for this international football break, leaving out players like, gnabry, goretzka, schlotterbeck and süle and nominating more inform players from stuttgart and leverkusen. something germany hasnt seen in a decade
Scholotterbeck and Sule are arguably the worst center back duo Germany ever had
Finally another maqwell video to edge too
Yeah bud. Your done 🤦🏿♂️😭
U need ur own restaurant bc ur cooking rn
As a Barcelona fan watching this video and seing that Hans Flick segment…
Is this the coach that scores us 8???
Is this the coach everyone says is unbeatable???
Is this our next coach???
He was shambolic as the manager of Germany. I’d even say he was together with Ribbeck the worst manager we ever had.
@@davinnicodewithout a doubt in my mind if you manage to perform your job in the middle of the season so horribly that you get fired it just shows you’re not the right person do be in that position
1:11:30 Was not expecting to see Eric Bischoff in a Maqwell video!
31:47 Mathias Sammer, a German defender of Borussia Dortmund also won the Ballon d'Or in 1996
Yes i noticed that 2 👍🏻⚽
as a mexican, watching the 7-1 match still gives me joy and a way to completely ignore the 7-0 loss against chile
2015 Mutti Merkel: Wir Schaffen Das! killed German Identity and Unity...
Germany 2004 won Japan by 3-0.
While the losers from now lost to them 2 times in a row
Because the whole world started getting better at developing talent.
As a german it gives me so much joy to see how bad the national team is.
It lets me know that there is always someone who fails more than me, lmao
A great watch and very informative. This has explained a lot for what is happening to Germany. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
There are some little inaccuracies here and there, but overall... WOW!!!
Very well done video about the history of Germany and the history of German football.
Congratulations! Not only recognizing the effort that you'd put into this, but also for the quality of the video.
1 hour and 30 minutes? I don't think I can hold it in for THAT long maqwell.
Please do the downfall of 2008-2012 Spain, arguably one of the best teams ever assembled
absolutely love Maxwell video essays
Pretty good anaysis.
I have another point why german recrutememt isnt working. The only way into top football is through the 150ish NLZ's. Players outside of these ranks have nearly no chance of getting into the top tier when there isnt a godd coach or scout involved which gets him up the tiers.
Examples where it worked out are Niklas Füllkrug
Jan-Niklas Beste (he could be a wild card for the Euros because he is such a talented Free-Kick taker)
Deniz Undav (i personaly remember him playing against my team in the german 3rd tier)
I saw this before the title and thumbnail change
20:41 Bro, I can't get enough of that bonk sound from that can on someone's head. Caught me so off guard 😂
shouldve mentioned in the brazil vs germany 2014 that the only reason it was 7-1 and not more was because the team was told to chill out at half time just out of empathy
Maxwell’s magnum opus has arrived, thank you for this my guy 🙏
Some important infos (there were too many comments, but I will add missing ones:
1.52:49 Jens Lehmann had a good performance during the 2005/06 season, which is the reason Klinsmann favoured him in the World Cup.
And Holland the ultimate chokers. Holland Italy EURO 2000 was het biggest bottle ever served!
As a German, I was laughing my ass off in the 2018-2023 section. Thank you Maqwell
Such an underrated channel, tons of effort and research makes it so when i see these vids in my sub box i watch without hesitation
lol crazy seeing this after they just beat France
A good sign but I'd like to see consistency so more wins in the near future hopefully. We need a number 9 with a killer instinct still, and the defence is still looking patchy.
You know it's gonna be a good day when maqwell makes a video essay
1:17:30 angry fiago 🤣🤣🤣
Fiago seeing Hamburg bottle promotion time and time again.
3-0😂 love you bro❤
Bruh the edit of Fiago's reaction to the Qatar loss was hilarious, lots of great editing all around actually
This mans videos have literally resurrected my attention span xD

Lol watching the video again i just loveeeeeeee the intro. Feels like OG FIFA RUclipsrs promoting coins back in the days

Well done my man, I must say this is the best most informative and entertaining 'documentary' on the German international team and at the same time the COMPLETE breakdown from how football began in Germany, the German FA (and controversy),the Bundaslega covering the highlights and lowlights.....and obviously the two great world wars and the German part in what can only be described as an epic tradegy which all sports were nothing as human beings fought for the real prize - A PEACEFUL LIFE..and how sports can also bring people together vis-a-vis East and West Germans and through a thorough change in attitudes we arrive in the 21st century with International teams only fighting for trophies...and long may it remain so. Like I said before I.got carried away this is the best video on not only German but European and and World football!
This should be required viewing for ALL academy youngsters..
Well Done 👌
why the title change?
Because Germany actually has hope now and a top contender now
Maqwell national team essays are some of my favorite football content on the site
Based on how things are going for Germany right now this video is gonna have an addendum by the end of the Euros
Now make a video about Vietnam the most finished national team 😂
I was skipping that video after thas cringy t shirt adverts, but sticked and was surprised you got it right that the first german club was founded in Germany was in Dresden! Greets from Dresden. Keep going! Sub earned!

Because of friendlies really 😂, you use those to let subs and youngsters stretch their legs
Just cuz they did good on a FRIENDLY, here you dropped this 🤡
Man your choice of memes is exceptional in your vids. They definitely play a part in what makes these videos so fun.
