- In my continued series on the RAD2x cables, I take a look at the Sega Saturn. Since there’s not much to say about the Saturn version of the RAD2x - Simply plug it in and start playing - I figured I’d throw in a comparison to the mClassic as well as a dithering comparison.
The mClassic was interesting and I think some people will appreciate the effect and others might be fine just using the filter that’s built into the RAD2x. Either way, hopefully the video is a help!

Good video. mClassic is on sale right now coincidentally. I personally like it. I think people wayyyy overhype its use on the Switch. Some people swear it turns their Switch into a Switch Pro which is crazy to me. It's nowhere near that impactful. But I do like it with earlier 3d gens, with one of my favorite uses being the n64 with my retrotink and smoothing filter applied.
Personally I've found that it works wonders with the OG Xbox and Dreamcast in particular. Seeing as it on promo in a couple of places its FAR more cost efficient if you want 1080p ouput (upscaled) on the latter AND its plug and play couple with the filtering etc.
Thanks for the info, Sega Saturn is still my all time favor console; it helps to play it on new LCD TV since my old TV is dying.

A big Sony CRT + RGB mode is the absolute best the Saturn will ever look.
Everything is just RIGHT. Colors, sharpness, scanlines and that beautiful glow that you only get on a CRT.
For dither blending. Try a lowpass filter. The filter provided with the XRGB mini does a great job imo.
You're on fire, so many videos! Great content, the blended dittering looks hideous on the Rad2x for me, the rest of the screen or a supersharp improvement of course...guess i'm too much of an old-schooler 😄 playing on crt is the best!
Fortunatelly my smart TV Sharp from 2018 has SCART input (ok, to be honest it's mini SCART and adapter is necessary). In the future if I have to buy a new TV, these RAD2X cables will be definitely on my list of interest ;)

Marseille does recommend using the smoothing filter on the RetroTINK 2X.
MClassic doesn’t work magic on everything. My best retro improvement was on Original Xbox. You need to set to 480p. See my side by sides with actual captures. I use an hdmi splitter and two of the same capture devices to achieve the exact gameplay twice.
For all its issues, composite on a CRT still looks really good (to me). The 'look' is so different to the chunky, pixelated style that modern TV's provide. I actually like the Tink smoothing filter and maybe that's why. Seems more accurate to me.
David Martins you don’t have component in your CRT?
@@shaggymcdaniel3216 I have three CRTs currently. All three are capable of component (2 have RGB and are PVMs) and I do use it depending on the game/system. After going through an RGB/Component phase (and reading through artist comments in the recent Bitmap Books Metal Slug book), I find myself appreciating the softer composite look more and more. Everyone should play how they like, though.

For me in depends on the console. For example Genesis has a lot of blurr and dot crawl. The PS1 has weird effects when it comes to certain colors and it doesn’t look as sharp as S-video or Component. On N64 it looks alright though.
@@davidlee1980 While I prefer RGB for most intents and purposes I do feel some early 3D games with very heavy dithering across the whole screen, like Silent Hill, do benefit from the composite or even RF look. Silent Hill in RF on a shitty CRT kind of accentuates the lo-fi horror aesthetics, kind of like how some 70's and 80's horror movies look cooler in grainy VHS than in crisp Bluray quality. Sometimes less is more. On the other hand I really don't see the value in blurry Genesis composite just for the waterfall blending effect in Sonic, for example.
On another note, sometimes dithering is very much intended as part of the aesthetic. Japanese computer games from the 80's and early 90's are good examples of this, especially PC-88 and PC-98 games. They were made for RGB PC monitors at higher resolutions like 640x400, and the GPUs had limited color depth, so dithering was necessary and part of the visual design. The dithered, crisp pixel art aesthetic of these PC games are something you didn't get on consoles, and I feel it's somewhat underappreciated by many online retro communities and big retro gaming channels on YT.
Quick question: Are the Rad2x's 720x480, or 640x480, or does it depend? Great video, by the way!
Thank you! I believe it's 720x640, as most TV's I've tried it on are automatically in the correct aspect ratio. Some TV's still require you to hit the 16:9 button...but those TV's will require that with ANY retro source, including the OSSC.

Great video! My only question would be this. When you showed the smoothing filter on radiant silvergun it didn’t look as sharp. Then on Nights you said it looked better. You also said that the mclassic on nights the smoothing was an improvement. Does the mclassic work as a better improvement for smoothing on the 2D games and will using smoothing on both devices kinda get you a middle ground of sharpness and smoothing on 2D games?
It's my opinion that smoothing looks TERRIBLE on 2D games (regardless of device), but sometimes looks great with 3D games. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough.
@@RetroRGB gotcha so for any 2D game your personal recommendation is to leave any sort of smoothing off so you don’t loose any pixel sharpness. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Rad2x or mclassic. Thanks! I just ordered my Rad2x since they opened up pre orders again! Also have you heard of the beharbros products like the Xedusa and Gekko?
Are all of them the same? If so, why not changing just the cable that goes to the consoles for each console?
Is the RAD2x for Saturn the best overall solution, or just the best beginner level one? If there's a more advanced solution for Sega Saturn on a modern TV (or in my case a 2009 Panasonic Plasma) I'd like to learn about it
The ossc will give you greater scaling options but as a result its a far more complicated setup. Rad2x cables are meant to be simple and affordable without any of the issues you'd get with brands such as hyperkin, pound, or levelhike. The ossc pro is in the works, might want to look into that if you're curious.
Just based on NiGTS there, I’m kind of a big fan of the “blending” that composite gives you. Maybe S-Video can do similar but I like the fake transparency that a real composite connection gives you for the balls of water and other similar effects. The dithering is distracting to me and I’d rather use the retroTINK 2x composite.
What type of sync signal does the Saturn version use?
Just got my rad2x cable and when plugged in it only shows a yellow light. Doesnt seem to be picking up rgb, any suggestions? (I thought all saturns natively output rgb)
Oh no, your BVM D9 looks like it has some color convergence issues. That's a shame, it's a great set. Loving the RAD2x too. I'm gonna be recommending it to everyone who asks, maybe even stock them at my shop.

Still, servicing these monitors has to be something more people could work on. I have to get my feet wet with it.
I connect my beloved sega saturn to my TV using "simple" rgb scart (I am in Europe) and it looks imho VERY nice on a modern 4k TV.
hmmm. I already have access to RGB Scart. I think I prefer that. I feel like there's just no getting around it. If you want to play hardware legacy consoles exactly as they originally looked you need Scart and a scanline generator or the HDMI chipbased mods that do scanlines. It honestly gives me eye strain to look at legacy games with the mushed together pixels. I need that spacing for a nice clear sharp image. To each his own though Ive held them up side by side for friends and they just did not see the issue. I guess what I'm saying is that I think scanlines are worth the cost. If I went with this I might as well just use emulators. This is very much a personal opinion though.
In theory the effect should be the same-ish with an OSSC instead a Rad2x? And how fast does the Rad2x switch resolutions?

I'm not sure why. Think I've just accidentally avoided the issues that people are having.
Been using my OSSC + mclassic with the Wii (component), PS2 (component) and Dreamcast (VGA).
As an example, the Dreamcast when outputting 640x480, gets scaled to 1024x768 when the mclassic is in retro mode (not sure if there is a difference between green and blue on the mclassic for this).
Any news on when the Rad2X will be restocked?

Hey... So it wasn't clear in the video, unless I missed it some how... how did you connect the mClassic to the Saturn? Did you simply connect it to the RAD2x via a Mini HDMI converter? Or did you connect the mclassic to the Saturn via other means? I just bought an mclassic and am trying to work out the best way to use it with my Saturn and Dreamcast... I use a Retrotink 2x SCART adapter for both atm to convert their RGB Scart to HDMI then connect the mclassic to the tink... but if its better to swap the Retrotink 2x Scart for the RAD2x in that chain, I might give that a go
You can connect the mClassic directly to the 2x SCART if you'd like - It will work exactly the same.

I have the hd retro vision cable for Saturn and I’m waiting on my m-classic to come in a couple of days.
So I should still see the same results or better if I use an ossc for the Saturn setup?
I hooked up the m-cable awhile back and noticed that the cable doesn’t do well with a device that do scanlines you have to turn off the scanlines if you want the m-cable to work so is the m-classic compatible with devices that use scanlines?
The OSSC doesn't work with the mClassic. I contacted the company about it and they never responded. If you already have HD Retrovision cables and like how it looked in this video, maybe buy a RetroTINK2x? It's the exact same output (same designer) as the RAD2x.
I have a retrotink 2X but I love scanlines on retro games and I love having options as sure as screen size the retrotink 2X has none of that.
Have you done a test in how it does with resolution transition with 240/480i? Both the framemeister and ossc to a lesser extent struggle here, just curious! Sonic Jam is a pain due to this.

Can you help me, I use the rad2x and a mclassic at my snes, I only see a black screen, just every 15 seconds I see 1 second the Gamescreen... What's wrong...?
Try taking the Mclassic out of the equation, it probably isn’t best for the SNES. If that doesn’t do anything, it’s probably the strange SNES refresh rate, so try another display if you have one.
Will the RAD2x work on a Mark 1 Pal Sega Saturn?
I love that Dave Mustaine "Rust in Peace" flying V in the background! I finally caved and bought a 2nd Action replay cart for my Saturn to flash one into Pseudo Saturn for those 500$ plus imports I will never be able to afford. This wouldn't give better 240p scaling than an OSSC with proper SCART though would it? I've been happy with my setup but always wonder if it can be a little better, always hard to tell!
Thanks! It's heavily customized with hand-wown pickups :) No, the OSSC will be better, it's just more complicated to use. With the RAD2x, just plug it in and go. With the OSSC, you'll want optimal timings via the FBX profiles, then you'll have to dial phase into each consoles. If you take the time to do that though...it's pretty amazing.
Will the Rad2X + mClassic work ok with an OSSC?
I’ve got a European lcd with SCART connection. Will Rad2x be the same quality, or should I stick with rgb SCART? Looks like retrocables UK rarely has SCART cables in stock these days. Thanks 🙏
It all depends on your TV - Most do NOT process retro gamer signals properly, but some do. I'd try direct-connecting first, but you'll probably find the RAD2x to be an upgrade.

If I wasn't interested in getting a single solution for outputting both a Saturn and a Dreamcast to an HDTV properly, I'd probably have gotten one of these. However, since I do have interest in getting a DC rigged to an HD display, I decided to get a SCART cable for the Saturn, an OSSC, and a VGA box (likely a Kuro Plus) for the Dreamcast down the line.
Sounds like an awesome solution for me. Only suggestion: Skip the "VGA Box" and just get one of these when they go back in stock:

It's better to use the OSSC's SCART port instead of the VGA, because of the filtering.
@@RetroRGB I was giving this a little more thought: what if the display is 720p? Is that “Pack-a-Punch” cable still better than a D-Sub VGA solution over OSSC?
Ossc still beats the rad2x by a lot right? Other than the framemeister is there any other upscaler that’s better than the Ossc right now?
If your TV is compatible with it's 1080p modes and if you're willing to load custom profiles (it's not much work anymore), than yes, the OSSC blows everything else away. I certainly wouldn't describe it as "plug and play" though, as there's some tweaking involved.
RetroRGB is there a huge plus with using a Ossc with systems that output 480p? Does the Ossc disable any bilinear filtering? Or fix any blur.
I get blur from Wii just hooking straight into my tv. Any box to fix that?
I recently got a 65inch Samsung tv, the ru8000 to be exact, and every time I use the mclassic with retro mode or upscaling mode the picture cuts in and out and is unstable. I have two mclassics both of which did the same thing. I tried it on my original Xbox with the pound,cable, on my Wii U, and on my retro tink2x with n64. I tried messing around with the settings on my tv but nothing. If anybody has any suggestions please help, I will greatly appreciated. I hate to have spent so much money on the mclassics and hdmi cables to not be able to enjoy them on my tv. Thank you!
Any benefit of getting the RAD2x over an OSSC? (other than cost)
Cost and ease of use (just plug it in). If you don't mind spending the extra money and spending a few moments configuring the OSSC for your consoles and their individual resolutions, it's MUCH better.
I connected my rad2x with my mclassic to my Gamecube and the rad2x is glowing purple and blue mclassic is turned on everything is connected through a hdmi mini to hdmi Kabel but my TV still says no signal I need help

Why does my rad2x signal keep going on and off? The light also won’t turn purple when using on the sega Saturn. Please help. Currently have the cables for Saturn and ps2
Ive heard some people needing to use external power with their saturn rad2x cable otherwise they run into issues. Mine doesnt and i havent run into this issue myself. Id imagine its as simple as breaking away that tiny bit of plastic that blocks the usb cable plug on the side.
So I’ve checked multiple times. The only site that sells these Rad2 cables says they’re not even available. Am I missing something?
They'll be back in stock within a few weeks. I guess they sold a lot more than originally anticipated.
What about the 240p/480i switch? Is the Rad2X fast enough to not cutout? That's my biggest gripe with the Saturn/PSX/N64. Even with an OSSC you get that stupid cutout anytime there is a 240p/480i switch. If this thing is fast enough to not cause a resync then it'd be worth it even for people with OSSCs.
I showed this in the original RAD2x video. The PlayStation version switches just as fast as the Saturn version, so check that out for examples. It's FAST!
how about those HD Retrovision cables? I use those with my Saturn + a cheap upscaler (I need to find a better one) + Xbox One (X) pass through ... I must admit that the games look great on my 4K Vizio P series (2017 model, I think) depending on what you are playing it does fill most of the screen. I think If I had a better upscaler than the cheap one I found on Amazon, it would look hella Crispy, like the Colonel's Chicken!
The HDRetrovision cables are amazing. If you pair those with the upcoming RetroTINK Mike's been teasing, you'll have a pretty amazing experience.
A Rad2x cable for the Wii would be sweet!
The 2x line of devices doesnt support 480p due to a limitation of the chipset used. So a wii version of the rad2x would be unlikely
I bought the hyperkin hdmi cable for Genesis 2, and when I play Mickey Mania, the little spouts that spit out smoke on the first level are completely invisible with washed out bright white. I hate how it looks. Do you know if the Rad2x will do better than this?
Yes, absolutely. That's part of the whole "240p being treated as 480i" thing I describe in these videos. I'd also spend a moment looking into scalers like the OSSC and RetroTINK 5x. If you're only connecting one console, they're much more expensive...but if you're connecting multiple, it might be a better investment overall. @@RetroRGB the prices of those other options unfortunately make me scream with terror. I have a retrotink2x mini at the moment which is great, and just want something for the Genesis tower of power
The 2x Mini and RAD2x are similar and even designed by the same creator. It can't accept RGB though, so for Genesis you'd be limited to composite.
@@RetroRGB I had someone mod my 32X to have an s video port on it, so it would look better on my Sharp tube tv upstairs, but when I connect it to the retrotink mini, the color is missing and instead color is just a bunch of waving lines of color that look practically black and white. Such a bummer. So I need to get a 32X now that isn’t modded and use something that will make games look better than hyperkin.
Do you know if the rad2x can be purchased somehow in the US and not through a British site that charges high prices in British pounds?
Why didn’t my rad2x work on my Saturn by just plugging in? It gave me a weird distorted picture. Then I pulled the tag off the usb power port and added a cable to add more power and worked perfectly. Not sure what’s going on.
Mine doesnt have this issue but ive definitely heard about it from others. It probably varies depending on your console and whether or not its providing sufficient power from the av out port. Thats my guess anyway.
That mClassic cable just don’t cut it for me, $100 is NUTSO. I’d at least be open to buying one if they were (a lot) cheaper. The RAD2x looks awesome, though. I already have an XRGB Mini, and I’m still gonna buy a couple RAD2x’s just because they’re so good, plus the guy who makes them seems like a great dude.
How is this vs the retrotink 5x pro? Any reason to get individual stuff anymore?
Well, in my opinion (just an opinion!), it's all about the total setup. Do you have mostly HDMI consoles and one analog video console? Get the RAD2x. It's cheaper and works totally fine.
...but do you have a bunch of analog video consoles? If so, the RT5x is a large step up and overall cheaper than buying a RAD2x for multiple consoles.
No "wrong" answer though, both are lagless, good solutions.

Only if you want to use the mCable. Otherwise, the OSSC is definitely better.

Delays in manufacturing due to covid. My guess is difficulty sourcing available parts but i could be wrong.
The side by side of the dithering is fascinating. The pattern becomes completely invisible with composite.
Is that Jackson V done up in rust in peace graphics?
Yup! It came with those graphics, but I added hand-wown pickups, grinded the frets to how I like and set it up to use the Ernie Ball cobalt's. I love that guitar.

I am one of the most vocal people against the Mcable. And for good reason, I have spent nearly the last decade documenting on a per game basis how to get the best possible Anti Aliasing on PC for the best performance. (Because especially on Nvidia gpus you have a lot of options)I have 30+GB of comparison screenshots from that period of time. And this cable is asking you to basically pay 100$ for something inferior to two post processing AA techniques that have been made freely available to anyone to use on PC or in development of their game for almost a decade. FXAA/SMAA. And then adding an overdone sharpening pass afterwards.
Most people on consoles aren't aware of this or what these techniques even are. Least of all aware that the majority of console games after 2011 already are using fxaa or smaa or some variant of their own. So short of the titles that have no AA at all. You are not going to help them in anyway by putting another filter on top. A filter that even on every example I have seen is inferior to said techniques. It can't properly even resolve long horizontal edges. Often resulting in a blurry wavy line with stepping still visible.
You cannot properly Anti Alias a heavily undersampled low res 3d source in 2d image space after the final image has been rendered. (Let alone with any semblance of temporal stability without massive artifacts)
It is physically impossible. Any claims to the contrary are objectively wrong.
Now does that mean you can't enjoy the image it makes? No that is subjective. To each his own. But when you have someone asking you to pay 100$ for it then don't be surprised when people call it out for the fraud it is.
If I remember it will update this post with screenshots of what proper AA looks like on 240p and 480p sources.

I don't really have the time for that at the moment, but I'll try. Also, all SNES HDMI cables are total garbage, except the RAD2x. Please check out the original RAD2x video that describes why.

Wow, the dithering and transparency on the CRT with Composite video really hit home how these games were meant to be rendered. I had always heard that composite looks way better on a CRT and that comparison shot between all 4 scenes really showed why. RGB brought alot of clarity and color, but it took away graphical elements which were meant to be displayed by developers.
There’s ways to make dithering look much better like smoothing filters, which is what these cables are for in the video.

The mcable or mclassic's effect is only a subtle improvement. Not worth the pricetag they're asking for.
It's great that they added 4:3 support with the mclassic but now they should try to add 240p support to the next revision of the mcable/mclassic along with better processing options to give retro gamers even more options to work with and push the boundaries more with this external graphic processing endeavor.
I think personally the Mcable/Mclassic is best suited for any sixth generation console. It makes the washed out playstation 2 games look way better!

I need a cable that I can use on my ps2 slim without physically nodding it since I’m in MA and everyone I know that does that stuff is straight across the US on the west coast. I refuse to buy that hyperkin garbage and as of now I don’t have the money for an OSCC or better. I’d like to get the retro rink 2X doubler (I think I’m using correct name) and a good cable so I can go through it to HDMI. Am I thinking the right way? I need help essentially because if I’m not on my CRT the ps2 is muddy as heck and for the next year or so I’m stuck with a flat screen. Please help

Thank you! I think the most cost-effective solution for you is one of two choices:
- Get the RAD2x. Switching between 240p and 480i is fast and since it deinterlaces 480i, you'll have much less lag on your TV. No 480p support though: bit.ly/rad2xplaystation
- If...and only IF all the games you like to play offer 480p support, just get the HD Retrovision component cables. If you play in 480i though, it'll be up to your TV to deinterlace and that often ads 2-5 frames MORE lag than the TV already has. As an FYI, this isn't a fault of the HD Retrovision cables, it's just how TVs work: amzn.to/2ys8DLs

You may not prefer the look of 480i bob deinterlaced though. Definitely look into it. It is much faster but i honestly cant stand it and i tend to just default to 480i passthrough with my RetroTINK2x

RetroRGB - THANK YOU so much. I went on their web site and unfortunately they are on back order. I will give it a shot. I have composite cables for it now but they are just cheap crap. I will order a good pair them to have just in case I want to play a game that’s not compatible with the RAD2x. Is their a list of games somewhere? If anyone knows I’d appreciate the heads up.

It's the exact same thing. They all use the same chips and code. If you need multiple inputs (and cables), you can get HD Retrovision cables, the RetroTINK2x and S-Video/Composite cables where necessary.

It really all depends on the console. It's one of those devices that should be used on a case-by-case basis. It'll make something like the PSTV look pretty damn good, but then when applied to the original xbox, it's disappointingly not as different as using without.

I just can’t play Sega Saturn on a flatscreen TV. I’ll take a CRT hooked up via RGB using a Shinybow converter any day.
Agree, Saturn RGB is so crisp and clean and look great on a PVM. Never tried original Saturn hardware on a flatscreen but I have played emlators on a flatscreen and there's just no contest compared to using a CRT. Even playing a Saturn emulator on a PC monitor with 2x scaling (480p) is not as good as 240p on a SD CRT.
You're missing out. I don't own the rad2x or mcable. Just RGB through an Hdmi upscaler and the image is much much sharper than it could be on a CRT. The Saturn's video output is just that good.
@@dalton2k538 You've obviously never seen Saturn on a PVM of BVM because that shit is sharp, it's the native resolution displayed without any upscaling, and movement is crisper because there's no sample and hold and motion blur/smearing as on an LCD. A lot of 3d Saturn games have lower framerates that definitely look smoother on a CRT in motion.

I really want to like the Mclassic but the price says no no. The rad2x is an awesome device if you only have 1 or 2 systems. I have a snes, genesis, n64, ps1, Saturn, ps2, xbox, wii all hooked up to my retrotink2x through component and HDRV cables, so the rad2x isn't for me.

The high price and actual performance of the mcable is what makes it seem like snake oil. Price is just insane for such a negligible difference. I'm sure some will disagree but in my opinion you dont get what you pay for with this device!
Hand to god they make huge impact, but they can wear out and stop functioning. I use mine on my modded gamecube, modded n64, switch and bsckwards ps3.

I saw a video released by Marseille of the mcable with uncharted on the PS3. There was alot of detail loss and what looked like black crush, it was a shame because the smoothing on 3D games looked great.

No, they're just catching up with all the delays. I believe there will be more of all the RAD2x cables soon enough.
About the mcable, from what i saw, i just think that it just doesn't worth 100$... Thats it. Although, shout-out to them that they provide no lag whatsoever and this on it self is a great thing, because as people voting with their wallets, the manufacturer try harder to bring ever better products. and this in my opinion is a very important point to note.

I would like a VGA cable for the retro consoles much more than HDMI. HDMI to VGA never looks good as native VGA and 480p always appear squashed.
It all depends on the converter. You can get some $20 HDMI to VGA converters that look great.
You might try the xrgb 2 plus by micomsoft. They are pretty rare but they are awesome!
