RAD2x: ZERO-lag HDMI cables for your Classic Consoles

  • I’m incredibly proud to exclusively unveil the “Retro Analog to Digital 2x” - aka RAD2x cables. These are the first and ONLY plug & play HDMI cables I’d recommend for use with 16 and 32-bit gaming consoles! Get yours here: bit.ly/rad2xhdmi
    If you liked this video, please consider signing up as a supporter, or leaving a "tip": www.retrorgb.com/support.html
    There are more RAD2x versions for Genesis, Saturn and PlayStation, as well as a “SNES” version compatible with every console that shipped with a SNES-style multi-out, regardless of mod or region (seriously).
    To be honest, I never thought there would be such an easy way to experience classic consoles on flat-screen TV’s without sacrificing part of the gaming experience, but thanks to a partnership between RetroTINK creator Mike Chi and Rob from Retro Gaming Cables, we have just that! Mike has essentially shrunk down his RetroTINK2x into a tiny PCB that allows the 240p RGB output to be doubled to 480p HDMI. This design, combined with Rob’s excellent over-molded, shielded cables, means there’s finally an inexpensive and simple way for people to properly experience classic consoles on flat-screen TV’s!
    My goal for this video was to cover as much as I can, in as short a time as possible, as I wanted to spread the word without boring people. I’ll have more videos in the coming weeks that focus on some of the more unique features, as well as compare them to other options and even provide raw capture footage for enthusiasts to check themselves. For now, this “unveiling” should cover enough to get you started.

    Is there a reason the composite n64 video capture look so bad in the video?

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  4 года назад +46

      Probably a combination of scaling and the prototype cable. The final product will look exactly like a shielded composite cable through the RetroTINK2x...cause that's essentially what this is :)
      I'll have a follow-up video with much more detailed comparisons before pre-orders open, so you'll know exactly what to expect with the final production version.

      The N64 is the worst console to try and make look presentable on a LCD television from all the info I've seen. This looks great compared to the competitors, that being said it's still not totally there. I believe getting an HD mod is your only true way to make this system look as the creators intended.

      @@EngieDerek Id say svideo linedoubled through a retrotink2x is more than presentable but i understand the n64 doesnt look all that great by default.

    Great video, Bob! Very beginner friendly! This Cable is definitely the long awaited cheap and good solution for people that are not too involved in this scene and don't want an expensive and complicated setup (yet).
    I do have one little gripe though: the Composite Video capture. It's unusually dark and very saturated. Is that because of the cable or just your particular N64 that you were using for capture?

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  4 года назад +3

      I think it's a combination of processing and the prototype's firmware. We were concentrating all our efforts on the RGB auto-detection and weren't really paying attention to composite quality. The final product will look just like shielded composite through the TINK2x though...which is shockingly good on the N64.

      Glad to see that it is! I can see this having a huge effect on demand for UltraHDMI. Even though I sell UltraHDMI, I'm glad there's finally an alternative under $100 which I can recommend. Thanks for letting us know, Bob!

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  4 года назад +3

      Well, UltraHDMI is better in every possible way, except two: You'll actually be able to buy this and you don't have to install it. That's a big deal for some, but if you can mod (and find an UltraHDMI), then absolutely do that instead. No disrespect meant to the RAD2x, it's just a fair opinion.

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 4 года назад +1

      @@RetroRGB A lot of people contact me to ask about UltraHDMI when they hear about the group buy and I'm the first to admit that it isn't worth it for everyone. I like to list alternatives along with typical prices, strengths, and weaknesses to avoid any kind of buyer's remorse. RetroTink 2X and these cables have one more big advantage than the ones you mention: UltraHDMI makes no attempt to de-interlace 480i.
      It just pipes out that 480i image as 480p or scales the interlaced frame as progressive to 720p/1080p, complete with interlacing artifacts. A digital display will also make no attempt to de-interlace with any of those resolutions, since it's technically a progressive frame of interlacing artifacts by that point. Granted, the N64 is primarily 240p and it's barely noticeable in 480i menus but the combing in a 480i game can be pretty distracting. Not with these!

    • @swungsolid
      @swungsolid 4 года назад

      Emmett Turner sounds like they need to re-make/improve the ultra hdmi mod to do bob-deinterlacing. An hdmi mod that cost $400 for n64 that doesn’t de-interface is kinda stupid. But hey if there isn’t many games that output 480i on it I guess stick with the ultra hdmi mod?

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  4 года назад +1

      I've tested about 40 TV's with the Time Sleuth and none took longer to scale 480p than 720p or 1080p (to 4K)...they were identical. Interlaced vs progressive was the only difference....scaling 480i took around five frames longer! So, you shouldn't have an issue with this cable adding lag.

    • @matthenzel8930
      @matthenzel8930 4 года назад

      zaneiken It kind of matters. I definitely prefer the 720p output of my AVS over the 480p of the Wii. While I don't need razor sharp pixels, and even prefer the bit of softness that 720p displays, 480p is a bit softer than I prefer.
      720p also works rather well when integer multipliers are factored in.
      Sure it's nitpicking, but that's sort of what we do when we are striving for minimal increases in visual performance.

      The Playstation cable doesn't support 480p, so not too useful for the Xbox if they build a Xbox version of this cable. Plus this seems to be purposed with properly upscaling 240p in mind, which is a non-existent resolution for commercial Xbox software. I would love to see a good Xbox HDMI cable though, but the specific capabilities of this cable wouldn't be a good match for the platform.

    Looks great for the price. But, in all of the examples where the RAD2X was tested, I see black pixels (looks like 2x1 pixels in size) popping up at a random location of the screen, only to disappear a frame or two later. This happened on the SNES, Genesis, SMS, Saturn and N64 and you can clearly see it in the bright areas of the game capture. Since it happened in all the tests, it can't be the console output. This would bother me a lot, despite the otherwise clear picture..

      I don't think so, as the MK-2000 has a completely different output circuit than all other Master System consoles. It won't hurt to try though, as the signal (voltage) might be too weak, not too strong.

I know the Nintendo multi-out has the “auto-detect” but I was curious if the others “search” for the RGB signal as well.
