    You know what's interesting? I worked at Game Crazy during the the 6th generation, and we had a PS2 hooked up to an HDTV via component during a time where most gamers were rocking CRTs with composite, and when customers came in, they complained about the "jagginess" of the display - they actually preferred the softness they were used to! That softness functioned as a sort of anti-aliasing at the time, the "softness" took the digital quality out of it and made folks feel they were playing something organic looking. I know it's crazy, cuz to folks like us, the jagginess is clearly a sign of image integrity, but in the end it's a matter of TASTE. ;)

    • @crazypete8888
      @crazypete8888 26 дней назад

      Back then most folks had no clue about any of this stuff and just figured they'd plug in what was in the box and that was how it was meant to be. I remember when the PS3 first came out one of my friends coming over and freaking out because games looked amazing on mine and crap on his. I went and checked out how his was set up and it turned out he had no clue what an HDMI cable even was and just had plugged his in with a composite cable because that is what came in the PS3 box at launch. He had been using it for quite a while that way even though he had an HDTV like I did.
      I had a PS2 back when they were the current thing and I didn't even know until recently what a component cable was. I only found out now because I am looking into how to hook up my old system to a current TV/monitor.

      @mistersurrealist 4 года назад +11

      The difference is extreme, you're right. He probably doesn't see it clearly because he's using a cheap HDMI converter and an LCD display that's doing a poor job at upscaling the image. Plug that console to a CRT through composite and then component and the difference is shocking.

      Component is the best bet on Xbox since most games were at least 480p and up to 1080i. Well, them expanding Xbox backwards compatibility on the Xbox One is really the best bet. Its also great if you get scratched discs that normally skip on a Xbox or 360 console since the XB1 downloads the game and really just needs to read the header info to validate it when launching the game. My scratched Crimson Skies works great on my XB1 even though it skips/stutters on my Xbox.

  • @madness1931
    @madness1931 6 лет назад +73

    Do note, not all FAT PS3s support PS2 back-compat. Specifically the 80GB model lost it's compatibility later on (I've never seen a 80GB model that does support it, until this video). I know because I had that model, and I ended up swapping it for a 60GB version specifically to get that back-compat. Not sure if this applies to the US, but I know this applies to the UK/EU countries.

    • @atchaos4life
      @atchaos4life 6 лет назад +22

Very fun to see which games look better upscaled in component vs HDMI. I can say the Capcom CPS2 games look better upscaled in HDMI so far. Yep, the 20 and 80 only have the PS2 CPU on board as far as I know. The 60GB launch edition has 2 CPUs and 2 GPUs on board. They are prone to failure due to a law making the developers use lead-free solder which can be ruined overtime. I think that's why most CECHA01 PS3s are rare because so many people got the YLOD.

    Honestly, a really nice HDTV CRT using component video is the way to go. You don't get that jagged look that shows on an LCD and it is better than a regular SDTV CRT due to upscaling 480i to 480p, 480p native ends up looking better, 240p will work and you can play GT4 in 1080i.

    Small mistake, the 80 gig model uses partial emulation. It has the ps2 gpu, but not it's cpu, because sony was having trouble emulating it. If it was just full on software emulation they never would have needed to drop backwards compatibility to lower the price. The 20 and 60 gig models have the full ps2 hardware.

      some HDMI converters have better upscaling (for 240p since many modern tv's won't take 240p over hdmi any longer) or better deinterlacing (for 480i) than what is built in. Some even have less lag, but its really hit or miss and you usually are looking at the >$60 converters at that point.

      Depends on what you want. The PS3 and Xbox360 can be found at around the same price, it's your preference that makes you want one console more than the other. The video series from TechnoBuffalo called "Xbox360 vs. PS3" explain what each console is capable of, which might help you decide for yourself if you weren't in the consoles before. Of course, if you don't have the money to buy PS4 or XboxOne, that is.
      IMHO, I prefer the PlayStation consoles, especially PS3, since I played every console prior to PS3, and got one on May last year, cost me around 170$. 320GB Slim version (used rarely, and well preserved, almost new), with probably latest CFW at the time, plus two Dualshock 3 controllers on top of all that, best deal ever found.

    You mentioned that the early PS3 models where prone to overheating. Don't think that is the case. There has recently been a re-exam of the notorious Ylod for the console. And it turns out that it's not the widely suspected solder joint on the CPU/GPU but actually notoriously faulty NEC/tokken capacitors.

      Mine is going strong as well *knock on wood*, then again it now has fans blowing air in and out of it and I keep it relatively dust free. I also let it sit on the home screen to cool down after playing a game. Also, I keep it horizontal and when I did put it vertical, I made sure to have some USB fans on it to pull hot air out of the exhaust vents.
      I've been tempted to do new thermal paste or reflow solder, but since it hasn't acted up yet, I figured I'd probably kickstart issues by doing so and have just left it alone with my current preventative steps.

      Read up on some mods on how to keep it cool. Swapping in later PS3 model PSU's that were more efficient and didn't give off as much heat, modern thermal paste and a better cooling fan combined with drilling a few holes in the bottom plastic shell to let it breathe in more air. Doing all of that should keep it running much much longer.
      Heat is the main issue. The heat could get so bad in those early PS3's that it could cause the solder connecting the chips to the board to liquefy and shift killing the PS3. Then only reballing will save it and if you are at that stage you are only delaying it's permanent death. So if you put in some effort to turn down the heat you can eliminate the systems main point of failure.

    Some points:
    Hi, I just want to point out some misleading info in your video. You say Component splits the video into three signals: red, green and blue. But it's actually luma (Y, like a greyscale picture) and two signal for color selection. It's still three signals and looks just as good as RGB.
    Also, Component is strictly better than SCART-RGB, since it supports 480p, while SCART-RGB only does 480i. 480i only sends half the picture each frame (even and odd lines alternating), so 480p sends 480 lines, 60 times per second, while 480i only sends 240 lines every 60th of a second, which means 480p using Component has double the bandwidth and will look better, if the game supports it.

    • @hammerheadshark4591

    • @WhiteboyUltima
      @WhiteboyUltima 6 лет назад +1

      RGB SCART does give a better picture than component, but not by too much. It's not the massive jump in quality like it is going from composite to component. My whole gaming room is mostly component (or HDMI for the more recent consoles i.e. Xbox 360 and up) but I'd love to get all my old consoles working over RGB SCART, it's just too expensive though for me to invest like that and I'm very happy with how component looks.

      SCART is actually capable of carrying a 480p signal and actually up to a 1080i signal just like component and VGA, it's just that the SCART ports on TV's and devices weren't built to accept it. A lot of modern devices that use SCART though, like the FrameMeister, OSSC, the TORO Dremacast VGA / RGB box etc. allow higher res signals to be sent over SCART.
      I currently use A TORO to force a 480p VGA signal through SCART as at the time, it was the only way to hook up a Dreamcast to a FrameMeister without losing the ability to play games at 480p.

      I believe you can actually get a PS2 to run at 480p, 720p and 1080i through SCART via "Sync on green" if you have an OSSC or a PVM that supports it and it actually looks a little better than it does through component.

      Another interesting point is europe standard for composite is much higher quality than NTSC composite. PAL composite looks almost as good as S-video (couldn't believe it the first time I have found out about it).
