    GSM only changes output resolution, not render resolution. In most cases render resolution remains 480i or 480p. Also slim model 7000 supports this setup if you soldered IDE cable onto the board.
    So you get no picture quality improvement if you're already playing over Component but lots of freezes and compatibility issues. What I recommend instead with HDD setup is patching ISOs to support widescreen. Most games have patches created for that. They start to look awesome on modern TV over component.

    While ESR and FMCB work very well with each other for booting DVD backups, the entire point of keeping them separate is so that FMCB can remain “clean” of anything related to backups or piracy. Saying ESR is “part of the FreeMcBoot package” is technically incorrect and an idea they don’t want us to spread... even if they go together like peanut butter and jelly.

  • @veggav
    @veggav 6 лет назад +19

    The problem with your PS1 games is that it's using the PopsLoader. This was used by Sony as a PS1 emulator on the PS2 for one particular game. Since the PS2 locks itself from anything external when booting a PS1 game by disc. So hackers used the PopsLoader, that has tons of bugs, within their OpenPS2Loader. That's the reason you can use GSM with PS1 games. PS1 games using disc on a PS2 are identical to a PS1 with real hardware.
    Now the problem with your Star Wars game is that your TV or your capture card is assuming an incorrect white and black level. If it expects 16-235 (normaly labeled TV level) and receives 0-255 (labeled PC level) you will get a very dark picture.
    Also you should state what PS3 you are using, since CECHA and CECHB have full hardware backwards compatibility and CHECHC and so on, have partial hardware emulation, with part of the graphics being software emulation.
    Also GSM just changes the output resolution, so your best bet at the moment, until Citrus3000PSi releases his true HDMI PCB for the PS2, is to use it paired with the Framemeister, since it's deinterlacing is way better compared to the BOB technique used by the OSSC.

      From this video there's no telling which version of Popstarter the modders went with.
      The project is still in active development and there are compatibility flags that can be patched in to fix many of the issues one would run into when using just the stock emulator.
      Popstarter will never be perfect, but the improvements added to the base program since its initial decryption are very impressive.
      Playing PSone games from hard drive using this method is really only more for the enthusiasts who are willing to put in the time to fix what's wrong and live with the occasional bug, it was never meant for mass adoption by casual crowds.

    • @veggav
      @veggav 6 лет назад +2

      @@TAGMedia7 Yes but still it's trying to emulate the PS1 in a not so powerful and not so friendly enviroment.
      Because of this, many people have the misconception that the PS2 won't properly handle PS1 games, which is actually the opposite, PS1 games runs perfectly within the PS2 hardware. Both architectures are very similar and the PS2 has the hardware to do so.
      I agree with you. PopStarter/ PopsLoader, are just a cool concept for enthusiasts and people should not rely on it. If the desire is to play PS1 games on a PS2 use real discs or get yourself a modded PS2.
      PS1 games are not the goal for OPL.

    I bought a Japanese Ocean Blue PS2 recently and did the FMCB soft mod with a 2TB HDD. I have PS1 and PS2 games all on the HDD. I also have a few SNES and Genesis games on the FMCB memory card. The Ps2 was the first console I bought with my own money and the console I bought the most games for. It's still my all-time favorite console. I remember having to open my first one (fat model) to clean the laser often and the last time I did it I slipped and put my screwdriver through the ribbon cable that was for controller port 1. That same day I bought a new slim model and loved it even more at the time. It was cool that they built the IR sensor for the DVD remote right into the console so you didn't need the dongle that plugged into the controller port. My fat model always had that thing plugged in. Back then I didn't have internet or need for an HDD so the expansion wasn't something I used. When I started looking for another in 2021 I wanted that expansion bay so I didn't have to go the USB HDD route. That works but it's much slower.

  • @emmettturner9452
    @emmettturner9452 6 лет назад +18

    ESR doesn’t trick the PS2 into thinking you put in a DVD movie. You do that when you patch the game images before burning them (you literally change it from DVD-ROM to DVD-Video). ESR is basically a substitute DVD video player that bootstraps the game when the PS2 tries to use it for playing the “movie.” For that to work the PS2 has to already think the game is a movie before ESR gets involved at all.
    Many people don’t know this, but the earliest PS2s did not actually have built-in DVD playback software. The DVD remote came with a software DVD player that runs from the memory card slot, so it wasn’t just used for the memory card styled remote IR receiver! Of course, Sony secured it by encrypting it to the unique memory card to keep people from abusing it’s ability to boot memory card executables.
    It took many years but the security was eventually reverse-engineered by Memor32/Memento and FMCB and used to sign/encrypt executables to our own memory card and, thus, FMCB, ESR, and OPL were born. We are basically exploiting the PS2’s ability to run an updated DVD player from the memory card. Consoles from late 2008 and on have this ability removed.

    The problems you are getting with some PS1 games on your PS2 is due to the fact that it's running under partial emulation: when you install ps1 games on the HDD,the system uses POPStarter to emulate the ps1 cpu, whereas if you run them from disc, it uses the physical ps1 cpu in the PS2, which also doubles as the IO Processor. That's why it can't do double duty and run ps1 code while managing the HDD

  • @MordecaiWalfish

    with the PS3 anti-aliasing for backwards compatibility, it uses a smear filter like fxaa to achieve this, which causes a noticible drop in fidelity, especially at lower resolutions and lower texture quality. simply look at the way the numbers in the UI are rendered at the bottom of the screen. on the ps2 they are crisp, as are the textures, but on the ps3 the whole screen has been put through a blur filter. I don't think the trade-off in visual clarity is worth the anti-aliasing effect this gives.

    The problem with PSone backups is that OPL uses Popstation instead of hardware to run it. Popstation is Sony’s PSone emulator they used in later cost-reduced models of the PS2. If you were using an original disc see if you still have the problem without the FMCB card inserted.

      Trujillo 2020 Yes. Unfortunately, the PS2 is stuck in PS2 mode even if it has original PSone hardware because it has to be in PS2 mode for the softmod to work. For security reasons and to avoid PSone discs being used to hack PS2 mode, Sony made the system essentially wall off access to PSone mode from within PS2 mode (and vice versa).
      The two major limitations:
      ESR can’t boot CD games.
      PS2 mode can’t boot PSone games.
      Open PS2 Loader effectively works around both of these limitations but has to use Pops emulator for the later. :( At least it’s essentially the same as a late-model PS2 as far as PSone compatibility goes. Sony definitely knows how to emulate PSone efficiently, even on something as old/underpowered for the task as the PS2. Heck, they pulled it off on the PSP and Xperia Play too.

    Good thing to notice that was not in your video is that GSM does not change the render resolution, that stills 480i in most cases or 480P if the games support it. What it does is use a frame buffer to upscale the 480i/480P resolution to 1080i/1080P. What it does is it takes the 480i/480P signal to the PS2's memory buffer ( generally used by developers to achive 480P) and it convert every bitmap memory to a video signal. You can find more information about GSM on the it's official development site "PS2 HOME". So there is no improvement at all in image clarity. But it can help if your TV does not support lower resolutions like 480i or 240P . Generally games look a lot sharper or even pixelated when upscales to 1080P but half of times this is not a true improvement at all and some games look way to dark specially survival horror games.

    Some points I would like to bring up.
    1. While there are PS2 HDD adapters that support Sata hard drives, the majority of them do not actually work well or even decent. Unless a lot has changed in the past couple years, most of them that have come out have been pretty much discouraged in the ps2 hacking community due to their many, many issues. For instance, the ethernet port on most of these unofficial Rather, most recommend using the official adapter as is or modifying it to support Sata drives.
    2. ESR is for playing burned backups. You patch your iso files with the program and on he ps2 you use the ESR launcher to play these particular backups. Compatibility isn't 100%.
    3. Instead to play games from HDD, the homebrew program you want to use in most cases is OpenPS2Loader also knwon as OPL, that's the one he's showing in most of the video. There's also HD Loader, but that's an older app with lower compatibility. I only used to ever use it to actually rip the games from discs to the hard drive.
    4. GSM, as others have noted is not actually rendering the game at higher resolutions, but only outputting an upscaled video. In some cases the resulting image can be better than having your tv do it, in some cases it can be worse. Mostly though it tends to be known to cause more problems than it is worth. I don't think the problems are permanant, so you can play around with it, but note with it you are likely to get a lot more crashes than without. I'd personally take a more stable game over one that looks a bit better.
    5. As others have also noted, many games have widescreen patches. If you have a widescreen TV, I recommend checking them out.

    I really don't like how you are also showing off one of those _gamestar_ network adapters... Having a network adapter that works with SATA instead of IDE hard drives is great, yes, the problem is that these gamestar ones are extremely faulty. They are _not_ reliable in any sense. Sure, you _might_ get one that works, but far too many people have gotten burned by thinking that they'd get a working product, only for it to crap out immediately... and yes, my hard drive is fine, so it's not that. I didn't like the IDE hard drives that I was using, because they died within months, were slower, and had a much more limited amount of space and for a higher price I might add. However, there aren't any reliable SATA network adapters, so there's always _something_ in the way. So while SATA is preferable, just find a way to get an upgrade kit and do it yourself, either that or buy a $20 piece of equipment only to return it a few days later. That said, you probably won't find one outside of ali-express, so there's always a catch to everything.

      Yes it can, luckily when the HDD spins up the fan speeds up. If you have a clean console you should have no worries.

      @@dr.lipshitz6304 Heat especifically is not an issue, the lockups happen because the video memory of the console is small and many games eventually use the space thst have this resolution patch stored on RAM, freezing it.

      @@lordeilluminati Then can you explain the screen tearing after it overheats and you can never use a 1080 output setting ever again on said overheated PS2. Ive got a few that I acquired that were treated poorly and have failed in this way.

      No overheating is happening, because the ps2 is still running at rated stock clocks. The freezing or gitchs happening is due to most games not being made for upscaling and also 1080i & 1080p are just upscaled by gs. The games are still running 480i or 480p natively.

    Best thing about using a HDD with a ps2 which noones mentioned is it essentially makes the PS2 region free. So you can play import games from the HDD.

    i had a PS2 slim modded like this, and i racked my brain trying to find a good way to play backups. i started with the dvd/movie trick, but that eventually killed my laser. then i tried using an external hard drive through usb, which had poor load times/framerate. eventually i found the best way to do it on slim is through networking, which i managed by wiring my system to a router, connecting my laptop via wifi, and opening up the ip/ports for them to connect. after that, i was able to boot up any backups i had on my laptop effortlessly
