Late Season Traditional Muzzleloader Elk Hunt

  • This is my first time hunting with a muzzleloader, it would defiantly be a challenge. Snow drifts were deep and temps were cold. This is a Traditional muzzleloader only hunt, the season last about a week in the middle of December. Access is defiantly an issue, many of the roads are completely drifted in in many areas.

    I feel cold and uncomfortable just watching this. These late season hunts are almost like punishment for not getting it done earlier.
    In all seriousness, great video. I love when folks put out content of last day's success. I remember these videos when I'm cold, wet, tired and hungry and I want to quit. Stories like these give me a little hope when I need it. Good job 👍.

      Yes it is punishment, and after its done I tell myself "next year I'm shooting the first raghorn bull I see during bow season". Then by the next year I forget and start holding out again, just a slow learner I guess. Thanks for the great comment, I appreciate it

    Muzzle gun hunts definitely have a nostalgic feel to them. Brings back memories for me chasing mtn bucks as a youngster. This video was as real and raw as they get and I enjoyed every second. Thanks for giving us a glimpse of the days when life was a bit simpler 👍🏻

    • @406highlanders
      @406highlanders  9 месяцев назад +1

      .50 caliber round ball, with 90 grains of Pyrodex powder. I would guess the shot was around 80 yards. I'm pretty new to the muzzleloader game, it is fun though the little I've done. Flintlock sounds even more challenging

    Congrats on harvesting your awesome bull elk !
    A few post-kill questions if I may:
    1) Did you have help hauling out those game bags, or was it literally just you ?
    2) Time of day for kill ? If later in the day, did you hoist up the game bags into a tree and kept coming back to haul out the rest the next day ?
    3) How far was your camp from the kill site ? Any 4x4 vehicle assist on roads some of the way, or did you hump it all on foot ?

    • @406highlanders
      @406highlanders  4 месяца назад

      Thanks and to question #1, I packed a heavy load out the day I killed the bull. I actually weighed that load. It was 108 pounds. I had help from my cousin the next day to pack out the rest of the bull. #2, it was pretty early in the day when I got the bull, 8:30-9:00 timeframe. It took the rest of the day to get bull boned out and I transferred all the meat about a half mile to a main trail and the one load out. Did not hang meat in a tree, it was late in the year and bears were not prevalent. It would have been a issue if earlier in year for there is a shitload of grizzly in this location. Kill site to trailhead was three and a half miles, all fairly flat but there was some deep snow drifts that hindered travel. No vehicle travel allowed.

      @@406highlanders Thanks for your reply and the 'rest of the story' after your kill. Most hunters and their YT videos I watch don't go into much detail about the extreme level of physical effort necessary to successfully get that boned out meat back to camp and cooled down asap.
      Looks like I'll need to really ramp up the cardio, hill climbs and weight training I'm already doing. I drew a bull elk tag for norther Arizona this late Nov.

      I’ve hunted all over the western and central parts over the years. You almost have to keep changing areas. Wolves can really knock the game population down for awhile. Contrary to what the experts say, they don’t just kill the sick and weak. Colorado is about to find that out here pretty soon unfortunately
