    Great Video 142 Really enjoyed it.
    The first side you faced on the lathe, can i just say, that there is no need to spend so much time truing it up as you are only facing it. Close enough is good enough.
    Also a wee tip on drilling a hole bigger. with the drill press off, bring the drill down onto the hole with a wee bit of pressure and while not holding the vice or job, turn, the drill backwards by hand (keeping some pressure on) This will move the job, center to the drill. Then start drilling.
    Look forward to watching more of you vids.

    Thanks for this, you can never have enough good oil cans.
    I thought the best part of the video was demonstrating how to true up rectangular stock in a 4-jaw chuck. Has always frustrated me, and now it won't. Well, actually it still will, but now I'll know where I'm headed and where I'm supposed to end up :)
    Thanks again.

    Hi !
    That was right in time for me - two days more and I've started my own drawing of that beast - thx for sharing this DIY of this very useful tool !
    Now I just have to convert it to metric AND the stock I have in my shop !
    Really nice project - thx for sharing again !

      They have been saying that the metric system would take over imperial since before even you were in diapers. It hasn't happened yet and likely never will.

    with respect to that sign being the new shop logo, I think it would look good as the header image for the RUclips channel page, you ought to talk to the fellow who made it and see if you can get ahold of the cad files

    Use a clear spray lacquer. I have use Krylon and others with very good effect. I have a polished aluminum street sign out on a pole that has been outside for ten or more years and has none of the discoloration that it would normally get. I also use it on machine tables. In a few years you can give it another spray with no prep other than a quick wipe. Very effective. Like the oil can project. How about a metal drip oiler for the metal bandsaw. A guy made one of plastic on the tube but I am sure you could dress it up and make a better valve. Nice work. Doug

      @Halligan142  8 лет назад

      +Douglas Thompson I picked up a can I just have to get around to spraying it. I don't like the oil on the saw just because I don't like the mess. If I could have it stationary and build a pan I may consider it.

    Very cool project. When you centered that stock in the 4-jaw--Very informative. Something I would never have even thought to do. However, I would have thought the more critical requirement would have been to tram the edge parallel to your ways to ensure squareness of the facing cut. Had you already done that, or are you just trusting the jaws on the 4-jaw?

    • @Halligan142
      @Halligan142  8 лет назад +1

      +Rick Rose Trusting the jaws. I bought the chuck as NOS (made in USA) shortly after I got the lathe. Jaws are nice and square.

    Also, I missed a bunch of the mods you did on your bandsaw. I saw when you balanced the wheels and when you added the sheet metal, but I missed the vise jack, the pneumatic lift, and the knurled handles. You can't say that thing's made in China anymore!

    small diam tubing??? try brake pipe, steel or copper. you can get the fittings to suit. in steel or brass,
    Greg,,, why did you do the long first drilling in the press when you already had it set up and centred in the lathe,,, easier and more accurate. you could even cut the thread as well before disturbing it.

    I think for the cut to length you could have reversed the part for a better hold?

    • @Halligan142
      @Halligan142  8 лет назад

      +DSCKy You could do it like that also. I was just afraid I'd over tighten the vice and make a flat spot in the aluminum and i was afraid that if the blade grabbed for some reason it would turn the stock.

    Hello there
    Like the way U did the setting on the 4 jaw with this odd sized piece.
    For us it was one of those..."so that' how it's done" projects
    Well explained and well done.
    Only thing we reckon for rookies and the varied audience U have, U should take it a bit easy. Just slow down. Seems like U in kind some big hurry to get some place ???
    No offence meant.
    Just our two cents since we've been watching most Your stuff
    Take care
    aRM

      Part of it is I have an extremely limited amount of shop time. Usually only get to do projects one or two nights a week and then editing takes a long time. I'm going to work on better spacing and cutting down each video length, but adding more parts.

    • @Halligan142
      @Halligan142  8 лет назад

      Yes it's in the bandsaw mod play list. All it is is a 1/8" x 4" plate bolted to the original vice jaws with a jack screw on one side so you can cut small length material.

    GREG
    With all due respects, what we found even on the other YT Videos, no matter how euridite and experienced the Demonstrating Machinist, is the amount of time taken to specifically show the long Machining run on a given job. U will agree that the most important part of MACHINING is "SETUP TIME" and once that is explained and done with, Your Audience need not be belaboured with the tedious, lengthy demo of the actual Machining job. Turning is turning, no matter the machine or the Cutter used. Short, quick, simple excerpts of the running Job should suffice. That would, in all events, take lesser time, maybe entail more editing, yes, and maybe permit U to elaborate verbally more on other important aspects of the Video project.
    GREG, all said and done, we very much appreciate Your esteemed time taken to record these Videos.
    We had this as an impending project and are busy compiling the small parts order with MMC. The small Diameter Tubing is proving a pain to source, but guess comprises can be made.
    All the best and
    Take Care
    aRM
