- The strong northwesterlies arrive and the Gulf Stream refuses to release me from its clutches. Finally some pleasant sailing ensues until Sunday (November 24) when we are obliged to heave-to for strong southwesterlies ahead of an approaching cold front.

Sail it Brother! You are the traditional sailor. Everything is tied, no electric rigging controls. I love it.
"Here comes the afternoons entertainment " too funny, thanks Kev
It is not often one finds a good footage online of small sailboat heaving to, let alone with a gaff rig. I feel i am getting seriously addicted to this channel.
Your opening shot again really captured the feel of your trip! Besides being the most authentic sailor posting videos, but your skills of filming are top notch. Your films will always be a record of the sailing life style and a record of how to sail oceans!
Thanks so much Gary!
I am very impressed with your sailing ability, your boat, and your videos! Thank you for making them for all of us to watch. I used to wonder why you didnt use a life vest but then I realized....if you fell overboard and the boat kept going then there is no one to assist in recovery...so, it makes sense to me now, bottom line: you make great videos and are an inspiration for all of us 'wannabe sailors!' - thanks again for your videos! - Vin from Sailing Nervous
Real thing!! Most authentic sailing videos anywhere. Fair winds shipmate
Thank you for the inspiration. Our boat has been on the hard in our back yard ,lol. For two years now . It seems the rebuild job on a boat that will never be worth what I have in it will never end. Your videos are medicine for my soul.. Thank You
Thanks for watching..
Great video showing the true conditions of the sea and how to handle the situation at hand!
Another top shelf video ..........outstanding. “Another fun night” and “relatively comfortable” .......... both classic sailors euphemisms for rolly wet crappy tired and miserable 👍🏻😎
"euphemisms for rolly wet crappy tired and miserable" ... yep.
I am the unknowing sailing public. Fascinated by what I don’t know of sailing other than the obvious dangers. Being miles from anywhere , out on-the open seas. Totally dependent on your sailing skills and knowledge. Believing in your boat to keep you safe, but knowing too that if you mess up, you’re swimming!! Of course I can tell the difference between the pointy end and the blunt end, but that really is just about it! The rest of it all seems so technical. So many people dreaming of the time they can sail their boats round the world equally as many dreading the thought but fascinated.
I am enjoying your vids though , thank you. From my warm and comfortable fireside. Please keep very safe.
Thanks for stopping by, mate.
Hahahahha. 8:05. Great cut!!!! Soooo nice sailing, nice weath.. nop!!!!
Yeah, a cheerful little tune segues into 10-12 foot walls of water and growling wind!
Kevin, your videography skills continue to improve at a rapid pace. The scenes you captured in this video are outstanding and quite dramatic. I think this one is even better than your last video. You captured some awesome wave action most folks find impossible to do with the majority of cameras available. I'm not prone to sea sickness but after a few moment of watching, I started thinking it might be wise to take some Dramamine before continuing! Due to snow and ice, my sailboat build (outside) has been stalled, but I continue to engage in small projects in the shop (such as building dorade boxes, etc.). It's your videos that help to keep me inspired and motivated. Thanks again, Kevin!
Thanks for watching, mate! Have fun with the "offline" boat projects ...
You da man, Kevin! Your boat is rockin' and rollin' and as you sign off you tell US to take care! Love it! I'm working toward this blue water dream. Couple years from it, sailing my 24' sloop as I hear up. Learning a lot from you. Thanks.
Great video. Love the raw sailing footage and commentary.
Found your site through rigging doctor... I’m glad I did, feel like I can learn much from you.
Mu God! and no tethers....good to watch ...funny how i would brag with that experience but wouldn't venture in it... yes some fun!!! have been following for a long time...i think this one was the best though i also like the skulling into berths and sailing off the mooring in harbours. Good work. and thank you.
Bad weather and you make it look easy, shows plenty of practice
Nice video! Interesting to see how your boat heave's to in those waves
And without a net.. No tether. Your nutz.
Love the underwater shots!
Kevin this is a great installment in your channel! It is truly an education to see you manage the various conditions. Motivates me to get out there!
Thanks for stopping by, Charles! Though let me warn you, rough weather is much more fun to watch than be in ..
Through 😅
@@howtosailoceans1423 I am sure of that. I made one passage from Connecticut to Norfolk as crew on a large ketch. No rough weather. But i am itching to do some coastal cruising in my boat. Hopefully next year.
So much for calm seas and fair winds. Pretty good wall cloud with that squall. Like bobbing around in a wash machine. Tomorrow the weather will change. Hopefully for the better.
The washing machine indeed!
I'm feeling a little dizzy now :-) thanks for sharing your adventures!
Thanks for stopping by, Bill.
Great video, as ussual, but.... I am delight with the mussic at 6:45. How the guitar and the bass line they complement (?) each other. and the invertions on the bass line.. very very good.
Well done, lad. I gotta admit I'm not much on the in port and at anchor vids, but your at sea and commentaries are terrific. Besides sailing, I'm a pilot, and (echoing comment below) as soon as you said, "Here comes the afternoon entertainment," my eyes went up, saw the line, and I knew the feeling. Much the same with the previous comment, "...gotta lash some things down" Yeah, that's life, ain't it.
I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a gaff rig in seas that big and winds that strong, and in an ocean ?
Your a titan
I like a gaff rig going up a tranquil river , sandwiches, a beer and bit of rowing.
Incidentally I hove to in my co. 32 with the main only like that, it must be a leftover habit from my falmouth punt days .
Contessa 32 is a great boat. Gaffers have sailed the wide oceans for at least two centuries...
Hey Kevin,
Great to see you again and the video footage is top notch with that chasing Dorado underwater and then your drone shots... when you later cut to the heavy sea's you could see just how confused the sea state was... it made all of us look like we were there with you... So Fair Winds and Safe Sea's my friend.
Robert
North Star
Thanks Robert. You know that Dorado followed me for over a day? Must have the thought the boat a food source.
Holly crap Kevin a mix bag of everything that can come your way enjoyed watching how you deal with everything. Cheers
"relatively comfortable" he says. Love your vids!!
You are a great mentor...cheers mate
Some active conditions. Well done!. We share thr same bad habit of not clipping in. I'm working to correct this.
Business as usual , great shots , love the music.
Kevin, Great post , just in time as my motivation was lagging to work on the boat today. Snow forecast for the Upper Chesapeake tonight.
Glad to see you were able to be barefoot in your foulweather gear.. A sure sign you are on the right course
"Beyond All Things Is The Sea"
Seneca
Indeed, you want to be in places where you can go barefoot. I'm glad that is motivating you blaze ahead with the boatwork, speaking of which ...
You are the man! Love your channel.
Kevin, I really like the way you use your sails. Great video.
Beautiful boat and sailed well.
Some of the best sailing video around! Thanks
This is an excellent video of wind and sail on various points.
S/v ...Waves
Epic conditions. Can't believe you weren't wearing something on your feet though! I've broken toes in much lighter conditions than you're sailing in, hope you stay well and thanks for sharing
I love your videos man but I gotta tell ya...I think your crazy being out there solo in those conditions WITHOUT a life vest and/or a tether. We need you around to keep making great videos. Play it safe. :)
I so looked forward to this video , was wondering how you were making out. Loved the hove to time.
you sir are a true seaman and great inspiration to us all!
i wonder if sometime you might show us how your windvane/tiller self steering arangement works? i see you can lash the tiller down quite easily , but you have a lot of slack in it underway allowing a lot of travel. even hove to you allow the boat a lot of free rein, and no backed headsail? your're freakin me out with your wizardry dude!
Check his web site for a tutorial on the windvane. Pretty neat trimtab deal I think he picked up from Larry Pardey's book The Self Sufficient Sailor, iirc. He references it in an earlier vid.
Fantastic footage.
12:00 to 12:59 video time
absolutely perfect!
priceless footage mate!!
kudos,
b filler
Oh those seas remind me of my backyard, Bass Strait, between Victoria and Tasmania
The Bass Strait has earned quite a bit of notoriety over the years ...
How to Sail Oceans , and I added some more information for you on your video Called,,,,, To Baltimore; handing a gaff sail ( revisited) the flying anchor set.
⛵️ thank you ⛵️
No BS..., just good sailing...nice
Nice one m8 - Weather!
Always an adventure 😃
Looks like a free freshwater washdown too.
More like a power wash ...
Great boat, nice videos. Now all you need is a beautiful girl running around the boat half dressed..lol. Just kidding. You are by far the most real sailing channel on RUclips. Safe travels buddy.
Look up "NBJS sailing" on YT
Sailing against the stream is tough I do fishing off the keys and when the wind is from the northern squadron the wind impact the stream current and this combination build such a confuse seas
Indeed.
Wow - this one had it all. Good seas, bad seas, sailing education, underwater shots!! Does the sea state look the same, worse or better than actual from our side on the monitor? Thumbed
502you , i can guarantee its all ways worst than it looks on camera !
Yes, generally cameras make waves look smaller.
Hi Kevin.
Love the shift in tine and pace at 8 minutes. It is really interesting to see how your filming, narrating and editing skills have developed. Gary
see the fish in the water , we call them Mahi Mahi in the South Pacific . do you ever catch and eat them ?
I was lamenting that I ditched my fishing gear, those Mahi Mahi are delicious!
@@howtosailoceans1423 , AND the good thing is , there Low Carbohydrate :) . I too am trying to lose weight .
please, get a vest and a harness and a security line ... else, good stuff!
Says the beta.
Your getting good use out of that new sail.
Yes, the new jib has already powered me many miles.
Wow Kevin. You do an amazing video at the same time come across as quite relaxed. Do you get any sleep in? You don’t seem sleep deprived and your cooking meals must be at a minimum.
Safe sailing.
Jim
Yes, usually I manage to sleep enough at sea, although rough conditions can make it difficult to sleep.
This was super educational for me. When hove to in this manner, what do you do to check for commercial traffic? AIS? Were you so far out of normal shipping lanes that it wasn't a concern? Was the motion of the boat calm enough that you could remain below without getting sick or did you have to stay on deck to tame your inner ear?
I kept the AIS receiver on the entire time even though there are few ships were I was. I stayed below most of the time, I rarely get seasick. It's never comfortable below in such conditions, but tolerable nonetheless.
Just sawyour interview on the Rigging Doctor...!!
When a weather man opens his mouth lies are coming out.
Ain't that the truth. Cought in the worst storm so far in the middle of Lake Erie on a day the weatherman predicted severe clear.
Brilliant Kevin, it looks like you are moving along at quite a speed ?
Generally 6 knots is top speed.
Kevin glad all goes well. I think you explained it once, why are you not worried mainsail boom won’t clock ya? Cheers from John in Sooke
The vang tied to the caprail should stop it.
Yeah, now I remember why I retired from the sea and moved to Montana...
Ha!
Gulp. Wow!
Kevin, I have a winch handle which would fit your boat (square hole) if you're looking for a spare, it's in fine shape.
Oh mate - please use the tether
I second that motion! ! ! Prudence demands tying off to jack lines whenever you are on deck offshore, especially when you are single- handing.
I'm no safety Nazi, far from it, but alone, offshore, in that breeze and no tether?
Oh how the landlubbers will whine.
SagaSeaCraft If you’d like to engage in a reasoned discussion of the relative merits of harnesses, I’ll listen to you. If you’d prefer to continue to engage in name calling and vacuous commenting, I won’t. I suspect Kevin has logged more single-handed offshore engineless sailing miles than 99 percent of his viewers, myself included. Given his experience and prudence in maintaining his boat and its systems, I’d be very interested in hearing his views on this subject.
Dayton Eckerson. It’s a complicated subject. Most boat have jack lines along the side decks. That means the fallen sailor will hang well into the water. With more people aboard, that has proven lethal. Alone it’s near certain death. No way one can manage to get back aboard. Better to not wear a harness and be acutely aware. Still I’m totally pro harnesses. They just need to be rigged differently. The jack lines must be rigged as far inboard as possible, preferably close to midship. Especially close to the bow, special methods must be prepared. Warious tethers needs to stay on the jack line and other useful locations, so it’s adapted to its actual location. A tether following the harness is not allowed on my boat. There’s lots more to say. Too much for RUclips comments....
Don't worry about us mate, your solo, watch out for yourself and you ain't gettin younger. I know thats just a good blow but in your own words "take care" mate.
Kevin I remember in one of your past videos you showed your two kerosene lanterns that hang on your rigging. A port and starboard set. Today in a Salvation Army I found the mate to those, a bow light. Red and green with a center divider. Cost me a whopping $4.50. Contact me if you need a picture of it. I bought it with you in mind. It’s free if you want it.
Never seen such a thing! The oil lamps are my back-ups now to the LED nav lights. You can send a pic to my email kaboothby@hotmail.com, I would be interested in seeing it.
She’s a beauty
Hi there, I’m not sure if your boat was ever a different color while you’ve owned her so you may not have frame of reference but do you think it heats the boat much due to the darker color? Truly great videos I really appreciate you doing these it looks like it involves quite a lot of setup/editing time and energy aka work...thanks
Yes, the black topsides heat up down south, but they look nice, so ...
Another awesome video Kevin. How long were you Hove- To?
About 18 hours, winds changed very abruptly when the front passed.
@@howtosailoceans1423 How much progress did you loose while hove-to?
Are you eating one hot meal a day? Or do you just cook whenever your hungry?
I was down to one hot meal per day, perhaps two, toward the end. I lost some weight on this passager.
I’m always trying to learn from sailing videos but too frequently they don’t state their departure point or destination. It would be helpful to know what to expect in that part of the world.
Yeah, often in a series of vids you forget that not everyone saw the first vid where you stated your departure port and destination ...
How to Sail Oceans I did enjoy the video. You look like a confident sailor.
There is a single block with a becket shackled to the rail and tied to the lifelines on each side about midship....what are they used for?
The jib (the white yankee you see in the drone footage) sheets.
Hey Kevin, awesome video, new subscriber here playing catch up. Curious about heaving to with only the reefed mainsail and tiller slightly to leeward, seems that would make you tack. Is that with the use of your wind vane? Could be a good video in it self. Thanks for sharing!
In heavy wind and sea conditions she will not tack, there's too much windage and wave action to overcome. Some boats however will require a backed storm jib to prevent tacking--depends on the boat.
The best part was no shoes in the beginning.
Stuff just got real, lol!
Did you get to try out your trysail?
No, I was tempted, but conditions were not that bad as to call for the trysail, which is a pain to rig.
“WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE‼️
💪😎👍
Don't let the boom smack you at 4:00.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
1:30 No tether and no shoes! HO-CHEE-MAMA!
8:08 is what I like to see.
Bonus!
Have you ever considered doing another circumnavigation?
No, although I may take a trip across the pond, stay tuned ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 Oh, and if you do so, let me know, I'd love to say hello!
You’ve figured out how to photograph waves and show their size.... some thing most people have failed at ...... telephoto?
Mostly my GoPro Hero 7, with the Olympus Tough for some of it. I think it's mainly a matter of getting on deck and filming in conditions where it is difficult to do so.
What devise do you use to download weather?
See next episode ...
Kevin when you get an address let me know ASAP. Want to get you this Christmas present. Rough passage but you always handle it well.
Thanks Don. Actually I have and address now but will only be here for another two days ... I'll keep you posted.
Keep me posted.
Damn you make nervous going along the rails with no life line Kevin. I get it but man be careful dude.
three downvotes??? For what? This is the real deal.
Single handing and no harness??? SMH
Shot at 8:00 = sail porn. Just sayin.....
