- I spend several weeks anchored off of the Deltaville Boatyard waiting for two new sails to arrive from New Zealand. Saturday, October 26 brings a decent weather forecast to head south to Hampton, Virginia, which will be my departure point for Key West. But there is no wind anywhere near Jackson Creek, and I end up sculling the boat all the way out of the channel. A pleasant sail ensues once out into the Chesapeake Bay, though I have to negotiate a narrow, crowded anchorage at the end of it.

Kevin....your videos keep getting better and better...... thanks .......Stott
I'm not sure how many vessels I would have hit anchoring Ruth Avery in Hampton, but it would have been a bunch. Well done sir!!! Always a good watch. thumbed
Your one sailing ass man Kevin. I love to see how easily you travel with so little tech.
Thanks for helping me keep my blood pressure down with another delightful video!
I'm anticipating transiting Norfolk within a week, and will hail you when I arrive if you are still weather-bound.
Hi Tom, will probably be weather bound (in Hampton) for another week ... sigh ... I missed the last bus and looks like some time before the next one rolls in. Fair winds .
Your fan base has stretched over the pond to an Englishman in Sweden.. Love your vids, you’re such a competent sailor.
Thanks for sharing

You make the best sailing vids.
Most excellent! Thank you for posting.
Congratulations on the new sails. Have a safe passage Kevin.
Thanks Joe. Best wishes with the house. If you have enough water at the dock you may have a visitor looking to use your laundry machine ha ha ...
Impressive work with that sculling oar
Love the title of this video!
Made me nervous again kevin lol. Another amazing video thank you. We are going on the hard here in the great white north. So keep them coming to get me through the winter.😉👍
I am on the hook in a 34' double doghouse ketch in Manatee Pocket, Florida. If you find yourself on the St Lucie in Stuart, stop in and say howdy!
Fun to watch this as we are on passage Charlestown to St. Augustine. Hearing the birds and the blocks and I’m looking around our boat for the source. LOL Creeping along wing n wing doing 3.8 knots hoping for the wind to fill back in. Cheers from Blue Highway met cha in Deltaville some weeks ago.
I have never describe a gales as light to moderate… You’re my hero!
Thanks, Kevin. I always pick up a few tricks from your videos. Much appreciated and always entertaining to say the least!
I can't put my finger on why, but this is my favourite sailing channel! Thanks, keep it up Kevin!
Just came into Hampton Piers Monday 11-4. Don’t see you so you must have gone. Great weather explanation! Others are here waiting as well. Thank you
Nautical Dreamer actually you are off our bow! Stop by for a chat. Again thanks for your insights! Sunday seems to be the day!
@@scottstevens5628 I assume you are gone now?
How to Sail Oceans nope at the dock. You are off out starboard now. Leave Wednesday after the storm. Crazy weather.
@@scottstevens5628 Oh I see, you are down near the bridge. Where are you headed? ECMWF model showing a powerful low south of Hatteras Fri-Sat.
How to Sail Oceans ditch for now :(. Need to keep watching your videos a bit more. Hampton is a great place to speak with sailors and their weather window decisions. You seem to live by the golden rule of safety!!
Exelant video and sailing as usual, always a treat to see and learn from.
I liked your old sails color! Very old school.
sorry to pester you I'm on the west coast indulging tonight some very fine east coast spirits.🍸
love Ruth's new sails, being a marconi riged sailor myself I noticed similarities between my and your new tri- sail and storm jib. a look at Adlard Coles book Heavy Weather Sailing is paramount.
inspiring storm tactics for the arm chair sailor with a warm brandy at hand. a north atlantic classic.
Those photos in Coles' book are rather terrifying ... glad the vid went well with the spirits.
Thanks for sharing you vast knowledge pool. It is appreciated . Cheers
Getting rocked real good tonight at Solomons Is. Im sure shes blowing good there as well. Maybe you head out next week...with the new cold front! But then again.....who cares about time.
I really enjoy your channel. Thanks
Love how you show how you plan a trip based on the weather and other wind maps, etc.. As someone planning to do this in a nother couple seasons, it adds greatly to my knowledge base. And love Boston. Song came out when I was in mid high school. Your guitar sounded great. Wanted to hear a bit more!
Nice looking trysail. Getting ready to head south again. Have a safe passage.
Us and the crew enjoyed it while we are at anchor at the Med easterly from Malta onboard of Athos
The first rock and roll song I ever learned on guitar was More Than A Feeling by BOSTON.
It's such a great song ..

Kevin,
Good to see your new video , you look so very relaxed using that scaling oar... and it looks so very peaceful . You make me want to not use my Iron Genie as much as I do... and practice sailing on and off the Hook. Cheers Bro and Fair Winds and Safe Sea's.

You continue to educate and entertain!
If you are still in hampton did you survive the storm last night? And my offer to treat you for lunch is good!
Kevin, shes a beautiful boat (timestamp 7:16). All the best on for your trip.
I wish we were ready, were going to be a few days behind you, we also have no motor currently, starter fried, so till its rebuilt, I'm in the same boat as you...lol. play on words...lol were currently in the bay right off Langley AFB, I have a 47' vegabound ketch, I'm restoring her... I'm a green horn rookie, lots to learn... OJT...
Appreciate you going over the weather logic like you did. Helps to see route planning in real time like that. Hope your departure window opens soon!
I started using table top epoxy on my exterior wood work,,it seems to hold up well and lets the wood shine through,,gives me time for my other boat projects, it doesn’t seem to cloud out like regular epoxy,,the Florida sun is brutal on wood
Yes, the southern sun is brutal on finishes. I've heard of people using epoxy as an undercoat, seems to work well.. interested to hear how your epoxy holds up.
It’s about 4 months, maybe 6,,I was thinking about your wooden mast and all those coats,,,too Bristol,
don’t forget to stop in at Pepe’s,across from the dingy dock,on Caraline,,,happy hour 4:00 ,,draft beer $1.50
Nice to hear another sailors thinking on the weather charts. I seem to spend a fair bit of time waiting for a good window and often wonder if im being over causios but I would have ready your predicament the same way and sat tight for a while yet so I guess i'm still thinking the right way. Thanks Kevin.
This passage is pretty tricky, it's best to err on the side of caution. Last year I waited three weeks for a window.
Thanks Kev, always entertaining
Funny I checking your channel for a new video earlier today and here it is.
Aye m8, you're really upp to date with vid's! I was also checking on Windy and it looks funny how the Gulf Stream divides the weather right now.
You're making me feel guilty Kevin, as I don't have a trysail either. I don't have a second groove in the mast, so would either have to let the main sliders fall out (not good in storm conditions) or do something like you have with ties going around the mast. I don't think just attaching the head and tack would work on my boat……. Think I'll stick with the 3rd reef for now. Like I said, you made me feel guilty. :-)
Been quiet from La Rochelle Patric, what're you up to?
Lacing the sail on in a building gale is going to be tricky, but there's no other way with a gaffer. You might be OK with just a storm jib, but I cannot get my boat's bow to look up into the wind any with just a jib, she needs some canvas aft. You would probably want to install a second track for the trysail, the would be best by far ..
Nice looking trysail!
We love using ours maybe a little too much 🤣
Sailing Tuesday from Ponce to Jax. Doubt we'll pass too close since we'll be closer inshore.
Safe travels.

Enjoyed it as always
I love your videos; the atmosphere of being at sea, the smells, sounds and run of the waves takes me instantly afloat again.
That's a good thing, I'm assuming ...
Happy Halloween.
Chatting with a finnish guy in the albin vega group , says the composite thruhulls melted when a yacht was struck by lightning and sank.i guess thinking of how the yacht is bonded needs consideration
Wow the footage at 7:15
Just found your channel. You're an impressive man. Thanks for the education and inspiration. Did you get away today? I'm watching Ventusky to see what you might be gettin'.
Still anchored, weather is not good for heading south just yet. Thanks for stopping by..
"It's such a great song .."
scant chance it measures to music Ruth gallops to mate? I feel her passions by hearing the orchestrated sound garden (0:00 to 0:15) as she lays abreast lovingly aware of her next flight of freedom.
Best videos for real sailors. Are you sure you're not related to Bernard Moitessier?
Ha! No, no relation, though I've read his books.
It's been a month, where is this dude? He's awesome!
Just arrived in the Keys ...
Christ you make me nervous sailing up to anchor!
nice job
What are the type of sails called that you have with the canvas , rope edge and sewed in rings and heavy corners? Do the darker sails fade? or should I go with a cream?
When I had my mainsail built by Simon Willis in 2003 he had stopped making sewn cringles unless by request. Press cringles work fine with Dacron. You will probably have to shop around a bit to have traditionally built sails. Yes, the tanbark sails will fade over time (by 10 years they will be noticeably faded). Cream would look nice, not as hard on the eyes as white.
are you making any changes to your provisions this time around? any worthy changes of interest?
Good video I was thinking the same things so watching the weather the past couple weeks we were waiting on some final Provisions also just north of you but seeing some of the surrounding area and knowing the conditions here being on the hook for the past 3 months open the back River cut north of Hampton we are making our final preparations, I have been checking out some of your videos on this East Coast sailing between Virginia Beach Florida and the Bahamas I like your thoughts about the the route to might take and your backup plans especially you sell that here a few hundred miles, as we are sail only also oh, that's the plan would you have a tender with us that can provide assistance and has already at Anchorage, the Anchorage is around here during the past hurricane and some of the nor'easters have proven quite interesting and can be hazardous as well in the shallow Waters with big swells come up to cut is an Easter or Nor'easter makes its way past and the tide conditions are just so, we draft eight feet so this Eastern Coastal sailing presents additional challenges
I'd hate to be lost at shore writing idiot's replies to goo goo video
Thanks Kevin. Another great vid as always. What do you think of S/S anchor chain? 3 times the price but would it last 3 times as long?
Jim
Do you get any trick or treaters at anchorage?
You're my second favorite sailor. I love your channel and your content. Would you like to know which salty sailor you lost too?
Ha! indulge me ...

Her good deeds knocked your no-motor, blue-water, solo-sailor competence into second place.
@@makhoe1 You actually took the time to slam Kevin on his own channel, with this inferior sally-sailor? Her vids are like watching paint dry, her poor vessel maintenance is abysmal, and she plays the eternal harbor-queen part. Kevin likely has much bigger fish to fry and bigger oceans to cross rather than caring about whether you like him more than some bleeding-heart do-gooder chickie on a crusty tub who doesn't sail much.
Whatever.
@@SagaSeaCraft I did start a pissing contest, but in good fun. I'm glad you like Kevin. I like him too. And yet suffering is alive and well. Kevin loses to chickie because chickie is working hard where it counts.
I looked out this morning and the front was gone
Looked up on Windy and saw to my dismay
Got ten days of wind that are blowing all wrong
I guess then at anchor that I must stay...
Nice job, sailing Hobbit! But you have to get your sails all the way from New Zealand?!
Can't anywhere in the USA make the sails you need?
Kiwis are all Born on sailing boats , they must be expert sailors by the age of 7 , than they must become the highest Quality sail makers , ship wrights , Boat builders or what ever in the boating world , if not , they are cast down into the pit of hell , where they will be despised all of there lives . So , just saying ! Kiwis = New Zealanders
I had Simon Willis build me a new mainsail back in 2002 when I was in NZ. I've always liked their sails, so I continue to shop there.
@@jimmyhvy2277 Ha! Yes, sailing is a thing down there.
@@jimmyhvy2277 Tell the truth, they just move to Australia and learn from the best, I know it sounds like hell, but it isn't really, it's a higher plane of consciousness LOL
jimmy HVY Pity they can’t play rugby anymore..... 😂
At least you dont have to worry about prop drag with your engine..
Yes, and when you don't have a prop aperture between the keel and rudder you pick up even more performance points.
I like and hate this channel!
Like: I get a sailing fix while my boat is on the hard.
Hate: I now have a serious hankering for a gaff cutter. 😉
