Well... I'll be blowed! Dumbfounded even. Your philosophical treatise gave voice and logical progression to my own scattered thoughts. Helluva job getting off the hook . :)
Hi Kevin. Don’t ever doubt your usefulness to the thousands of us whose minds escape and muscles relax for a short while each time you post a new video. Thank you.
Another wonderful episode, thank you. And I really appreciated your essay. I have a 23yo son, one of many I know who is “failing to launch”, spending his days gaming or watching RUclips, choosing not to find gainful employment. I don’t know how to help him. I’m at the other end of life and planning to sail away towards the end of this year. I have filled my life with adventures and travel, including my son over the past 23years but still he chooses the gaming. You, sir, are working by filming/editing/uploading videos, marketing t-shirts, etc. Please keep making the videos and posting them, they are inspiring. Elaine ⛵️⚓️
And I hope I've made it clear that I don't entirely blame boys for "failing to launch". There is so much negative messaging about boys and men in our culture--from sitcoms where dad is a complete idiot, to #meToo where men are all potential rapists, to the media glorifying single moms when the research clearly shows that fatherless homes are terrible for kids (on average), especially boys. Then there's institutions like family courts where men often get taken to the cleaners. So what motivation does a boy have to grow up and marry in a culture like this? Sure, boys also have to pick themselves up by the bootstraps, but I think society has to stop bashing them 24/7 as well.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Going sailing and not letting themselves be constantly bashed is a good alternative though, and "failing to launch" into a society too dumb to recognize their qualities actually is a good thing. How could anything start to change should they _not_ turn their backs to the current system, which is rigged right against them?
Power boater for 40 years and now a new sail boat owner, I have a new found appreciation for all of those sailboat captains. With twin screws Bow and stern thrusters, I could dock my power boat almost anywhere and in most weather conditions with ease. Now I find myself paying close attention to the wind and currents and I still occasionally bounce off a dock or two. Kevin I admire your ability to navigate your boat without an engine.
Love your videos Kevin. This was a dream for me for many years until my wife left me. I sold the boat and plunged in the music world. But you are rebuilding my deep love for the oceans. The trouble is that it will probably stay just a dream, as I am in my late seventies. however the future is always full of surprises.
Seeing that fishing pot slide by just inches away from the hull made me chuckle Kevin. Despite my best 'lookout' efforts, I have lost count of the number of times that has happened to me. I always feel, momentarily, like I have failed some kind of exam when that happens. It's reassuring to see that it also happens to much more experienced sailors. :-)
In some places there are just so many of them that it's impossible to keep altering course--in fact, you can actually catch them by trying to avoid them, usually best just to drive right over them. I think I caught that one when I was tacking.
You have inspired me to go engineless Kevin! Should be throwing the lines by May. These land based creatures are nuts!!! 😜 I've been watching your channel for about a year now and never miss a show. My favourite sailing channel BY FAR!!! Fair winds buddy. 🙏
Thanks for your concern mate. If that's what it is? Good thing I don't live in the states!!! Although I don't have anywhere near the experience of our honourable host, I do have several years live aboard experience and worry far less than you in regards to the authorities. I'm certainty not going to let any 1930s tactics scare me into submission. I'm willing to die for that, as many certainly will in the coming years. Peace ✌️
I think I would install a drop mount on the stern for a dinghy outboard engine, both to store it, and so it could double as a main boat engine in an emergency.
Bravo my friend...words of wisdom beyond your years...May I add KAOS is my bible, has been my choice since a teen, life on the edge. Travelled the world working after leaving the "safety" of my own contracting company many ebb tides ago...A swag is my locker and my home is in the here and now with no bills to pay. Always close to doom and despair on the world stage, but proud of my survival instincts and never the need to run back to the security of home (oz). A fulfilled life? Not finished yet.
Although I do not wish your lifestyle, your humble channel has re-connected me to my sailing roots. This summer I shall take my wife and two grown-up daughters back to the wooden gaff rigged engine-less boat where I learned to sail nearly fifty years ago. It is a craft skill I cherish that puts me in touch with some elemental truths and something deep in my soul.
Your channel is the one thing I look forward to the most in the evenings, by far my favorite RUclips channel where I come to relax, enjoy your experience and learn about sailing. I'm actually dreading when I get caught up on the episodes and have to wait for the new one to come out. This video though has helped me get to know the sailor at the helm and only caused me to look forward even more to new episodes from you and Ruth Avery. Thanks for sharing your thoughts...
There's quite a bit of truth within those words... well spoken Kevin. I'm glad you that our questions and responses makes you feel useful. But my next line is ment to make you feel proud. Kevin Boothby in my eyes, and i believe not only in my eyes but probably in most people's eyes with an interest in sailing and saylor skills you are a significant figure and I have huge respect for your work and seamanship. Keep it up Kevin you are more than useful you are an inspiration. Thank you!
I had the same experience last winter in Key West morning field (Garrison Bight) there were many days I couldn’t get off the boat and watched my dingy get beat.Sleepless nights being tossed and yanked on a morning ball and I did get hit buy another boat at night.January and February I stayed there and at times experienced three to four foot chop from the north.I sold my boat to a young man from Key West and went back home to family,my trip was over for now.Working on getting another boat now ,there is just something about the sea.I felt like I just relived last winter through your vid. Thanks for your channel.
I agree, that mooring field is just a bit too exposed, and even if you check your mooring and lines, another boat can come crashing down on top of you.
Your philosophical treatise in this video is quite inspiring, Kevin. I think you've found a path that will allow you to live the life of a "Parrot-head" without getting lost in Margaritaville! Thanks for sharing another great video!
Well done Kevin, Bravo and as the English say "Brilliant". We have like minds, my sailboat is getting ready to take me around the world. Hope to see you out there one day Captain.
When I first started following your Channel I thought that you were doing it as close to Joshua Slocum as anybody could. My hat's off to you. You have to tackle the problems in so many different ways being without power. You're a true Seaman
You really are a true legend Kevin. There are a few times now that you have put words together philosophically, that bring realtity to day to day life, that shine a light on an otherwise crazy world. Thank you.

How to Sail Oceans yeah I saw that..He even went to Russia for treatment..unbelievable what that family has Been through. I wish them all the best. Smart guy!
SOME GOOD OBSERVATIONS AND OF COURSE SUBJECTIVE but the greatest adventure by far is discovering the self and realizing that we are all on the same boat. And appreciating our debt to all evolution in giving us the opportunity to be living.
Well said Captain. The parallel between dragging your anchor and not holding to the ground fit beautifully with your soliloquy on an adventurer's life. You were really close to shore when you jibed. It looked like a blast! Oh those pesky lines, those topping lifts, that wrap within a sail's leech and make you lose your sleep...unwind! Sail on!
Excellent advice and well spoken. When you spend time sailing, especially ocean sailing with a vessel such as Ruth Avery, you gain an understanding of the order of how things should be and what’s important and whats not. This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and I’m now a subscriber. Thankyou very much Kevin. Keep safe.
Another great video and commentary. You certainly are useful. Your experience will be of great assistance when I go offshore after retirement. Counting the days...
I have started from the beginning of your channel and so far this is my favorite just by your sharing wisdom. Happy sailing and happy manlying and happy self discovery!
Yeow! A dragging anchor is one of the worst wake up calls a sailor can have. Especially on an engine less boat but, you handled it well and glad you turned the camera on and described the action. I doff my cap. As for the Philosophers Sandbar: Many ways to go through life. I worked a midnight shift for 19 years. Not much of a life then: work, sleep, eat. Making up for it now. Boat is currently on the hard for the winter. My current retirement plan is to get someplace warm once a month until spring outfitting starts. Jumping on another cruise ship out of New York in a week just to get some sea staring time in. Practicing my Beaufort scale observations during the day. I find myself on the balcony at night thinking about those mariners who plied the waters when they were on simpler vessels in simpler times.
Thank you for the adventure, seamanship and the sailor's philosophy. Sadly my local waters in BC have prolonged calms. At 76 I have developed an allergy to sun light. I have learned how to avoid the UV so I'm still sailing. I cannot give up now. Bon voyage my friend.
While I would never choose to sail in a engine less boat the skill to be able to sail the boat up to a dock , on morning and off and in tight quarters is invaluable. Things that I get to choose to do or not. Thanks for the good video. Captain Vincent
Thanks Captain, yes, it takes a lot of stress off when you have a reliable engine just in case. Good on ya for practicing without, most people do not bother.
As an armchair sailor (current position), I find your exploits somewhat daring and inspiring and your attitude and philosophy to life both refreshing and invigorating. Godspeed Kevin.

Cheers my friend enjoy yourself because most of us dont.😤😤

Beautiful..
Love this quote, a quick search came up with this author - Isak Dinesen
@@darshanpatel9279 Is that the lady that wrote "Out of Africa" ?
My apologies, Isak Dinesen was the pen name of the real author who is Karen Blixen; and you are right, she wrote Out of Africa
