Do sailing boat normally break the speed limit? I'm guessing it's normally power boats who just put the hammer down in a no wake zone. Unless they install a couple of V12 engines with 20 liter engine capcity and massive turbo chargers, they probably won't be getting many speeding tickets.
Matt- another tip from a pro sprayer (not me) who just finished my boat. When you pull or release the trigger on the gun you need to do it when it is not pointed directly at the surface. Doing it that way leaves vertical lines in the paint. Instead, pull the trigger when it is aimed at an angle, like 45 degrees off, and sweep it towards 90 degrees and start your horizontal motion.. then pivot the gun away from the surface to 45 degrees again before letting the trigger go. Kind of like the motion a broom would have sweeping a large floor back and forth. Doing it that way feathers in the lines to hide them. You can see this on spraying demos on youtube (look for how to use a paint sprayer to spray your home).
Matt, Your spray gun needs some adjusting for spraying that primer, The top knob should adjust your spray width, witch needs to be wider, and the lower knob should adjust the flow rate, witch needs to be less if your getting runs, ie: top knob anti clockwise and lower knob clockwise, practice on a board outside to get it right, as this layer of primer should be applied as if it were "top coat" or finish coat, those runs are really going to take some getting out without altering the surrounding surfaces, All the very best to you both, Al (retired spray painter)
The Binks gun is all the way out for spray width. It seems tight to me too. I figured out the issue with the runs -- I was way too close to the surface. Later it went better once I realized the mistake.

Look great when new, but red (and blue) always seem to fade in intense sun and show the dirt and salt crusts. Also I always worry that the dark hulls will absorb the heat and get super hot inside vs a white hull which reflects the light more.

Welcome back guys, I was a little concerned about your absence because this is the only format I follow you on and I thought I may have stopped my subscription, but I hadn't and all is well !! I love the idea of a colourful boat, La Vag have an orange one, Atticus have a green one, The Wynns have a pale Blue/Green one so maybe a Red hull for you guys. We have a small blue bus, converted into a camper. When we're surrounded by a sea of white factory-built RV's, and people ask which is ours, replying with "the blue one" is generally a pretty safe bet. Makes it super easy to find after a night out too! And if you've ever seen any offshore maritime SAR aircraft footage and you're unfortunate enough to ever be in that position, having to play spot the white boat amoungst the huge white breakers doesn't make their job any easier. Go large, go bright, it'll look fabulous.
Great progress! I like the idea of red - this will definitely stand out wherever you go. TIP: the yellow paint pouring guard is designed to be installed on the INSIDE lip of the paint can, not the outside. 🙂
That colour thing is a tough one! I’d really like some elegant color but other thing is that darker colours absorb so much more heat! It really amazing really how little it takes from keeping cool to becoming burning hot in the sun. So as much I would like to suggest like vibrant greens or blues or reds, the reality may be that very light colours are the real options. Maybe it could be light warm toned gray...? 🤔 And the primer makes so much difference! 😍
Matt - You should really watch some car painting technique videos. I know you're only spraying primer that'll be sanded right meow, but you should be using all that gun time to perfect your techniques, so your final finishes come out perfect. Never stop in the middle of a large area unless you cannot reach the end of it! When I painted cars I'd do full length passes from the grille to the taillight panel. Anywhere you stop and start will show, and that's a huge cause of runs in primer. Don't let off the trigger all the way between passes! The air should be flowing all the time, you just turn the material flow on/off at the ends of a sweep, preferably past the end of what you're painting. I *highly* recommend getting a clean 55 gallon drum and some cheap paint to practice with before you spray any paint. My auto painting teacher wouldn't let me paint a car until I could paint a drum with no runs or dry spots. 55 gallon drums are really difficult to paint evenly so they're great for practice!
Hubby was an auto body & heavy truck painter before retirement. When we bought our RV, I wanted a red or the blue one, but he told me it would fade unbelievably. We ended up with the off white one and I was SO thankful after reading so many people complaining about their RV fading and being so much work required to keep up with it. I would recommend that you go with a lighter color.
I love those yellow plastic attachable pour spouts. Be sure to attach it to the inner ring of the paint can. This prevents paint from getting into the dreaded paint can sealing groove. Makes sealing the lid on the can much easier. I bought a bunch of the pour spouts at Home Depot recently because they stopped selling them for a while. Now I have a good supply.
Hi guys. Good to see a new video! Matt, not sure if you remember but we spoke at the Annapolis boat show back in October at some length about how pleased we were with using Alexseal on our PDQ 36. In less then ideal conditions (outdoors with bugs and dust) we painted our hulls by rolling the paint on and we were blown away by the results. This product is amazing and I’m sure you’re going to love it. Just a couple of comments after a year of sailing with this paint on the hulls. We have found the paint to be extremely durable and easy to clean. In our present docking set up, we dock on the STBD side with the prevailing wind on our port for most of the time. This resulted on the boat pressed up against the fenders on the STBD side. We have old, dirty, grimy fenders and I had some concern that all of that rolling back and forth on the fenders day after day would result in wear on the paint that would require buffing to bring back a shiny finish. When we hauled the boat this past fall we were unable to find any wear at all - the finish looked like it was freshly applied. We had not painted the sugar scoops as they were in pretty good shape so they only had the original gelcoat. From sitting in the scummy marina water all summer, there was quite a waterline stain. The Alexseal simply wiped off with water and a cloth. The gelcoat on the sugar scoops however, required a significant amount of effort to get the stain out. Jessica, you mentioned something about ease of cleaning and durability of gelcoat vs paint - from our experience I can confidently say that the paint appeared to be very durable and easier to clean than the old gelcoat on our boat. One last comment about our experience applying the paint. We found (as you found out) that the material is very thin (watery). As a result, I think to get proper coverage you will require multiple coats of topcoat (we applied 3 coats). Jessica, you mentioned using the darker primer for your surfaces inside the boat. Based on our experience I’m not sure that would be the best solution. You may find that more coats are required to get proper coverage using a dark primer with the white finish. We did have some issues with making sure we got complete coverage on each coat. What we ended up doing was I rolled the paint on and my wife was constantly inspecting the surface as I was applying it for any dry or missed spots - this seemed to work well. It does look like you guys will be spraying so your process will be different from our project. There were a couple of other boats in our yard that been professionally sprayed (not Alexseal) and our finish was any bit as good. People were stopping on a regular basis to check out the progress and couldn’t believe the quality of the finish. I certainly do not claim to be an expert - this was the first time we ever painted a boat. I spent quite a bit of time on the phone with tech support at Alexseal to make sure that we understood the process clearly (their tech support is excellent). We followed the instructions to a tee and couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Good luck with your project, it’s going to be awesome. Oh yeah, I vote for red…..
your boat did look good orange, but i love orange and green as my 2 favorite colors so i might be partial to the orange look, i painted one of my harleys hugger orange with neon green flames and also had a pair of Vans skate shoes custom made in orange with green and orange checkerboard layout. if i had a boat, id probably paint it like my skate shoes 🤪
One way to reduce runs and splatters when spray painting is to keep your finger on the trigger and/or start pressing the trigger when you are off the part being sprayed. I'd say red would be awesome, but would it make you more of a target for thieves, etc.?
That "What colour would you choose" question sent me down a rabbit hole looking at lots and lots of boats and other people's collections of photos! Ultimately, only you can satisfy you - i was very taken by multi-coloured hulls: scarlet to just above the waterline, deep royal blue for the majority of the hull, and a gold or yellow band around the top...
Matt you need to spray the whole panel from one end to the other, spraying 3 feet at a time is giving you over laps that will show through. (more paint at the overlap) Keep up the good work!
As a Buckeye fan, I love the red (with grey trim). So happy you Michiganders agree.😀 Unfortunately, the red does oxidize. The Sailing Family's Outremer 51 "Archer" had Red hulls. It was beautiful.
We used Alexseal topcoat on our boot stripe recently and we rolled it on with the roll additive. It came out great and you really can't tell it wasn't sprayed. We found it in stock here in Langkawi so I believe the worldwide network claim.
So glad to see your using a spray gun. Just remember don't stop your movement until you already have let off the trigger! Also you want a thin first spray, a heavier second coat. Also if you struggle with runs your paint is mixed too thin if your moving the spray gun and letting off the trigger before you reverse the direction
After seeing the Wynns boat, a color would be really nice. All the white boats are nice , but, I think the new color styles are rich. Just can’t decide what color I would choose. Good luck with that.
Looking great. When you spray a section make as longs as strokes as possible, Because when you have a six foot wall and you only spray two feet at a time and then start on your next two feet you are doubling up on primer or paint when you overlap and that's most likely where you are getting runs. Keep up the great work.
I used Alexseal for my deck refit three years ago and can seriously recommend it. A little bit on the expensive side but it is worth it. I rolled it on and the roll additive worked its magic and no tip off is required. Very close to spray finish and extremely durable once cured. Two coats of primer and two coats of topcoat did it.
Matt try a continuous sweep with the gun edge to edge , you will have better results. Paint color look at Tierra robins egg blue or The Wynns selected a teal that is vary nice, but Matt may need to start taking Testophyne supplement if you do pick something like those. If red is your choice I think matching sail bags will be too much red. You asked.
As a commercial fisherman, and having learned the hard way, that safety is the prime directive, I would choose a color that stands out against the sea and sky... I know this isn't a glamorous point of view; its another layer of security / safety when things go awry...
Mankiewicz located in Wilhelmsburg a District of Hamburg has recently introduced three colors for 2024, namely: Embrace, Undated and Fog. Since 1895 they have been refining paints and have present employment openings in Shanghai, China. P4420 can be purchased through West Marine at $234.99 a gallon. The Master Cabin came out perfect.
Sun Fast Red 3150 or Empress Blue 5203 I think would look great whilst still being relatively easy to keep clean. Personally I love the Midnight Blue, but an it shows up salt spots soooo much (as do all the spark colours) Oranges are cool too but you might look a bit much like a recover/rescue boat 😂. Coming on nicely despite the weather guys 👍
You will have admirers and haters! I think brighter boats can be better for visibility, which can be good and bad depending on where you are in the world! Look forward to seeing what you decide :-) oh... I like the grays and lighter blue tones
So glad to see you guys back! I was worried the storm took you out of commission. The yellow pour spout goes on the inside rim, then it drains back into the can! If you put it on the outside rim, it drains into the groove, and then you have a mess.
Gosh the white looks spectacular! For outside, I'm always a sucker for silver metallic on just about anything. But, whatever you do, its going to look amazing!
Hi there Guys, Matt you need to watch some spraying vids on RUclips. You are spraying in a narrow line with minimal overlap. I recommend opening out the fan on your gun and spraying a much wider pattern with less paint and far more overlap. It will get you less runs and more even coverage. Also you can do a lighter coat on first pass then go back over right away for a deeper layer when the paint will have started to tack over
You should have 3 knobs for setting a normal gun. One is paint needle for paint volume. Above it is the fan width. You can get a spread of 10” with it well open. Closed down you get a circle for edges, corners etc. on the bottom of the gun is the pressure adjust. I would ignore it and fit a cheap chinese inline regulator/water separator with pressure clock. Set your air pressure here. For top coat you may get best results with 1.4mm nozzle and for primers, particularly high build you will need the 1.8mm nozzle. I would recommend a separate gun for each. I have a pair of lower end Devilbiss FLG guns for painting. They are $150 typically, £125 here in UK. Until you spend proper money they are just as good as many other guns in the $400+ range
I know little about it but isn't paint the best choice on boats? Go colour inside and out and going a different interior solves a problem with matching what you have. Great to see you're OK and good luck with your repairs on the shed. I think you should do a whole season of sanding videos I find them relaxing and good for napping.
Just reached the part of the video where you’re going to mix the two parts. I’m glad to see you are using a pouring rim spout. But you can put it on the inside rim of the can to avoid paint getting under the lid/can seal. It is looking very nice. Good job so far.
Being a painter watching this is driving me crazy lol 😆😭 bring a brush or roller along with in case you get a run you can brush or roll it out so when you sand it is much easier
@@MJSailing not trying to discredit you guys your doing a awesome job and I love your channel it's my OCD getting the best of me lol 🤣 you guys got this 💓
I used Alex Seal on the arch for my boat. It was a 3 part mix including the reducer. The primer took 3 coats to build up. It is really thin. 3 coats of too coat too. Really expensive, but great look and extremely strong.
I looked into those Alexseal colours, in my opinion I would chose the following, 5195 - Santorin Blue - for below the waterline, the 1158 - Moon Dust - for above the waterline, 3158 - Toredor Red - For lettering and accents and finally, the 9132 - Cloud White - for graphics and designs like in your episode 22. I looked for pearl-ish finish colours, but Alexseal doesn't do that it seems.
Just a suggestion. At 12:0x, you're trying to avoid splashing while mixing. You're using a cardboard box. Tape the lid up to make the sides taller. The deeper the box, the better it catches any splashes.
Several years ago I had my Cal 33 topside painted white and the hull painted Carolina Blue, needless to say living in North Carolina I got a lot of thumbs up! I feel certain you guys will select a color combo that looks great.
Colour choice has more to do with recovering from disaster than aesthetics. I’m talking about the one thing that no-one wants to happen - capsize. In such an event, visibility is necessary. That knocks out the whites, blues and greens. Poor light visibility knocks out dark colours and red. So that leaves a variation of yellow. I thought La Vagabond’s colour headed in the right direction but it is still a bit dark for poor light visibility.
Paint some test panels of red and white, put a thermometer on them, and you'll see why most boats are white, especially in the tropics with little breeze.
@02:21 Yep, rows and rows of whipped cream blobs. This reminds me of a sailing trip my spouse and I did. After a long stretch including several nights and some periods of rough weather, we went into a marina for a good rest. My spouse contacted the marina to get permission, and a box-number to moor in, so all good. We found the right row and she pointed and said "our spot is right behind that white boat"...👴😳🤯
I would advise a bit of caution on assuming using Alexseal would have the benefit of worldwide product supply & support. We tried using Alexseal in Thailand for our 15 meter cat and ended up switching to Jotun. Reasons? 1. Local price was astronomical, more than 30% higher than Australia (which is expensive for starters). JOTUN Hardtop AX was about 30% of the price of Alexseal topcoat. Jotun Hibuild primer was 25% of the Alexseal finish primer price. 2. Many products were not stocked, for example they would have primer but no converter, or vice versa. Over a month wait for anything, " until next shipment" & thats with supply out of local area distributer in Singapore! 3. Poor sales support even trying to buy product, eg 2 weeks to get any quote response, so imagine post sales support? On the plus side, it is a good product with great colour range. Tough paint, easy to repair unlike Awlgrip, easy to spray and control for environmental factors, good gloss level right out of the gun. A tip for you; I tested the need to use their finish primer, compared to alternatives such as Jotun Penguard Highbuild which is easier to apply, more versatile in application, and about a quarter the price. There is absolutely no difference in the final finish! Alexseal will tell you their primer is special ( hence the higher cost) and gives higher gloss in the 501 Topcoat, because it "sands better"....and that is marketing BS to extract more from your wallet with a high profit margin product.
IF you dial back and open up to the max the upper adjustment on your paint gun it should widen your spray pattern. You may have to overlap more in your paint back and forth but should generate less runs. Upol makes a nice 2 part tint-able high build primer. Good price and available on ebay. Hope that helps.
When I use the pour spout I roll up some paper towels and force the paper towel into the groove the lid goes into to seal the can . It stops the paint from flowing into the entire groove and makes it much easier to clean up the can once I'm done pouring paint out of the can.
Whatever color you go with. You need to think how well it reflects the sun/heat. Otherwise you might wish you had a really good AC to keep you from burning up in some tropic conditions. IMO red would make the interior way too hot inside otherwise.
So sorry to learn about the Jan 10 storm. It must have been heartbreaking. Colored boats are definitelly the new rage. Raf and Sascha went with blue, la Vaga went wit banana yellow. A huge Cat went with a deep red. You guys are creative and so hard working. Pick a color that excites yourselves and we'll be happy for you
Something to think about when choosing a hull color (maybe you know this) is that the darker the color, the more any flaws will show. Perhaps this is why so many factory boats are white...because it's the best way to hide flaws? I only mention this because it seems like Matt might have the slightest bit of perfectionist in his personality. 😉
Hi guys! So as you know we can choose any color on our 526 as they paint all of them, and we've spent weeks aboard the red boat, orange, white, gray, and one with a beautiful wrap...and after all our deliberations we are going....white! Having owned red/black/blue boats before we understand the shear amount of work involved to keep them looking beautiful, and when all shined up they are gorgeous, but also they will all oxidize over time and take significantly more elbow grease to keep looking nice. Your cat will be stunning regardless of color and totally understand if you go splashy, we understand the urge!
I'VE GONE BLIND!!!! ALL i CAN SEE IS WHITE!!! OOPS!!!! It went away.....I don't know why you looked different in the opening of the video, but you looked really, REALLY good Jess....if that was the natural you and no make up.....wow. Matt, you're a luck dog! She's pretty, smart and not afraid to work her butt off.
That was about an hour of preparation with hair and makeup, which is why it's rare to see me that way. A lot of women spend a lot of time to get that 'natural beauty' look. 😉
Yes to colour! You're right about white. They all look the same. I say be bold. I do like an orange myself. Great thing about paint is, albeit expensive to do, you can always change it a few years down the line. Would you consider a two tone scheme?
I would opt for a colour that can be seen from far. Some blues or greens match with the water colour and when you only motor, you won't be seen easily. Just a thought. Red-orange is a good choice in that respect.😊
There are many good reasons why nobody overpaints factory new gelcoats. Except if you have too much time and funds. The contrast between the white gelcoat and the color of the paint will make every tiny scratch more visible from far. Also many paints cannot be cleaned and polished as good as gelcoat. Imo there is no rational reason to overpaint a new gelcoat. If you really want something else than white, than you can use colored boat wrap for the sides above the water line. Be creative with the colors and the shapes. It doesn’t last longer than paint, but it’s easier to get remove, make new patterns or return to the original gelcoat. Yes, it’s not sponsored by Alexseal.
If you want to see a really great looking cat in red- check out sketch to sea. His HH Catamaran had red hulls. The one thing I will say, and I am sure you have probably heard this already- the darker the color the better the surface has to be-the tiniest imperfections will show. Have you considered maybe using a wrap? Is that even possible with a fiberglass hull? I have seen steel boats get wrapped, but am unsure as to a fiberglass hull.
There's a lot of boat manufacturers choosing to wrap their boats. You could have a more interesting design made up, or a colour fade/merge, etc and have the option to change it in the future.
Red boats are the first ones to get tickets for speeding.
Lol
Yeah, but the more tickets, the higher the insurance! I like red with a splash of black. Speeding tickets when the boat is anchored. :¬) Webhead USA

You should go for the Odd color as we are gonna go for bare aluminum on our next boat! We loved our orange color!
your boat did look good orange, but i love orange and green as my 2 favorite colors so i might be partial to the orange look, i painted one of my harleys hugger orange with neon green flames and also had a pair of Vans skate shoes custom made in orange with green and orange checkerboard layout. if i had a boat, id probably paint it like my skate shoes 🤪
Ahhhh, so we can do an Odd/MJ switch!! I like it!!
Next boat? OMG....After all the work you two put into Odd, I'd keel haul myself before changing boats again!
@@timc9893 ruclips.net/video/FGLwyT44vfQ/видео.htmlsi=DwiSqfcP39hLblhQ Odd was a great teacher to learn the trades to build our dream boat 💕
Don't forget they paint boats white to reflect heat, colours absorb heat in the tropics. Paint it white.
So 😊 to see your video pop up! I was missing you two....
One way to reduce runs and splatters when spray painting is to keep your finger on the trigger and/or start pressing the trigger when you are off the part being sprayed. I'd say red would be awesome, but would it make you more of a target for thieves, etc.?
Orange is my color. Always works great with blue, balck or white.
Easy beautiful red ….. TORCH RED it’s a corvette colour and really suits angles and would look amazing on yours ❤️🇨🇦
congrads some final steps. It's a long process. I think you guys are amazing.
So happy you Michiganders agree.😀
Unfortunately, the red does oxidize. The Sailing Family's Outremer 51 "Archer" had Red hulls. It was beautiful.
You really need too get a surf prep vaccum sander. Also get a Festool extractor.
We've had 3 boats, blue, bright yellow, and now orange. Love being different, easily identifiable and bright, white is soooo common😁
Love the idea of colour, but you will need to coordinate your sails to match 😉
After seeing the Wynns boat, a color would be really nice. All the white boats are nice , but, I think the new color styles are rich. Just can’t decide what color I would choose. Good luck with that.
Looking great. When you spray a section make as longs as strokes as possible, Because when you have a six foot wall and you only spray two feet at a time and then start on your next two feet you are doubling up on primer or paint when you overlap and that's most likely where you are getting runs. Keep up the great work.
Great to see you both again, I am sure that the break in transmission has felt like a holiday.
I have always liked a bright red, but also really like a dark blue hull. I liked "Gone with the Wynns" HH cat that is turquois looks great also.
A first "ghost coat" Is a good idea. Just let it flash off then you will not have so many runs as you lay the next coat down.
I really liked the bright green colour.
That is looking beautiful! I'm sure it's a great feeling getting to this point.
Your boat. If it was my boat Teal Green. Love you videos. Awesome choice to paint. Deck should be white to keep your feet cool.
We really like a teal green as well, something like the Wynn's new HH. But then we'd feel like we're copying them if we went that same route, haha.
White is the only color that doesn't absorb heat from the Sun. Maybe a stripe or a manufacturer logo or some custom graphics!
White hull with barefoot prints in red wandering down the hull :-} or a print of something cool. Perhaps the 4 elements as a motif?
Also you can do a lighter coat on first pass then go back over right away for a deeper layer when the paint will have started to tack over
That's as wide as the pattern goes on that gun. Seemed tight to me too
You should have 3 knobs for setting a normal gun.
Suggestion: When pouring liquid from the square metal can, turn the can over so that the spout is on the top of the can. That will stop the "glugs".
I know little about it but isn't paint the best choice on boats? Go colour inside and out and going a different interior solves a problem with matching what you have.
Great to see you're OK and good luck with your repairs on the shed. I think you should do a whole season of sanding videos I find them relaxing and good for napping.
@21:45 That feeling is sooo recognisable! Being so watery thin it still looks great!
All the hard work is hidden, just to be 'forgotten'...👴👌
Just reached the part of the video where you’re going to mix the two parts. I’m glad to see you are using a pouring rim spout. But you can put it on the inside rim of the can to avoid paint getting under the lid/can seal. It is looking very nice. Good job so far.
I had a car that was painted Metallic Burnt Orange. Most amazing color!
I bet you looked great driving down the road!
Being a painter watching this is driving me crazy lol 😆😭 bring a brush or roller along with in case you get a run you can brush or roll it out so when you sand it is much easier
We *should* know better, especially since we rolled and tipped the cabin top of our last boat, haha.
@@MJSailing not trying to discredit you guys your doing a awesome job and I love your channel it's my OCD getting the best of me lol 🤣 you guys got this 💓
Your fan setting is way too narrow .
I used Alex Seal on the arch for my boat.
It was a 3 part mix including the reducer. The primer took 3 coats to build up. It is really thin. 3 coats of too coat too. Really expensive, but great look and extremely strong.
Keep at it beautiful peoples!.
I'll be using that same product on my catamaran after watching Sailing Sweet Ruca.
The burnt red is very nice.
Yellow has always been a favorite on boats.
I thought La Vagabond’s colour headed in the right direction but it is still a bit dark for poor light visibility.
don't be afraid of color...the Wynns H and H turned out awesome...i do dig the red though
Roll and tipped my Tartan with Alexseal flag blue several years ago. Happy with the result.
Red and blue are the first colours to loose their brightness and create a lot of heat in the boat.
Red would look amazing.
So good to see when you open that 1gallon tin it's actually full for two pack this is great
Paint some test panels of red and white, put a thermometer on them, and you'll see why most boats are white, especially in the tropics with little breeze.
Very beautiful 🌺👍😊
Well, finally I'm bored without you guys))
That's actually as wide of a pattern as possible on that gun. Seems tight to me too
Gotta feel good to get some paint on! Looks great!
Make a good colour... red, yellow, oransje, blue grey, just make it bold - it looks so much better on a modern designed cat.
I like that metallic champagne I even like that green but you should pick what’s your favorite colors tell us what’s your favorite color
Red will look great
