I didn't understand why my Mom would skip during the middle of this song until I was grown 🤣 First time I heard, I was like... "is he doin what I think he's doin!?" 😳
How this got through the censors, I will never know. The allusions used in the song: the seagulls, the bell tolls signify things without having to speak of them. Prince was no fool.
imagine my 14 year old self listening to this on the radio while taping the Saturday night old school DJ mixes. my mouth stayed opened. i was stunned. this ish was audio porn and i was. . . intrigued (to say the least). big ups to Philadelphia's 105.3 WDAS FM for puttin' me on to this one. never forget it. 🤫
Love this song. It was so unique when it first came out. Prince was so ahead of his time. Keep digging in P’s discography. He has so many gems to uncover!
You gotta understand his genius. He was in his early 20's when he recorded this ABSOLUTELY ALONE!!! No other band members were in the studio with him and he had no template. He produced, arranged and performed these song by himself. This song in particular is a great demonstration of why he is considered the G.O.A.T. The many changes in the song. The instruments he played during. How smooth it is and at the same time, so so funky. He was prolific and because of that his output was massive, but that didn't impede him from churning out numerous classic songs. He was ahead of his time and that is why people are just now realizing what some of us already knew,.. we were watching someone special that most likely will never be replicated. I get sad at that notion. Check out Thieves in the temple, Anotherloverholenyohead and Controversy....among countless others to choose from.
Also, I think Prince is super underrated in regards to his arrangements. Because he played all the instruments on so many of his songs (including this one, by the way…I laughed when you said “them” like it was a whole band), he didn’t let ego get in the way of creating a balanced instrumental. The way the instruments all have their part of the melody reminds me a lot of Sly and the Family Stone. Like if you separated the instrument tracks and played them individually, it wouldn’t sounds remotely the same.
One of my fave songs bc you can clearly hear Prince playing the drums as opposed to the emphasis on the drum machine. On his earlier albums (prior to Purple Rain, Prince wrote, produced, performed (he was the band), arranged and did the vocals on most of his early albums as well as wrote and played instruments on songs he wrote for others groups/artists (like The Times first album and Sheila E). 1999 is a double album that he had to fight the record label to release and it was a huge hit and paved the way for Purple Rain. 1999 is my personal favorite album bc he's mostly just jamming with many songs over 5 min long. You should check out Automatic on the 1999 album (the music video is a trip but the album version is fantastic). The liner notes on all published albums (prior to streaming) credited specific parts of each song to the appropriate singer and band and/or studio musicians.
I liked him before I heard this way back when he first came on the radio . He was fairly new to the scene then. This tune sealed the deal for me. I was hooked from here on. 💜👑💥
Loved his bass playing on this. His instrumentation PERIOD!!! My favorite artist!! My mom could keep me from playing this lol i was 19 when this came out
yeah, this one and the next one were both his best IMO . But still so many masterpieces b4 and after them. The Batman Album marked the downturn, to me at least.
How does a lady cab driver have a mansion?….it was the 70s and if you remember the “Charley “ perfume commercials you’ll understand why lady cab drivers became a fascination in that era 😂
If i'm not mistaken, Prince performed all the instruments and vocals on this song with the exception of Jill Jones doing some backing vocals. BTW, i'm curious why your music videos get blocked and other reacting to Prince music videos do not. I follow a number of reaction accounts and almost all react to the music videos. One guy, "Just Jammin" has almost all of Princes catalog completed.
1999 was the last album he did that was accessible to teens. He was still an underground artist in 82' still belonged to me and my homies. Purple Rain was a let down, so great and a movie to boot lol, we had to share him with the lames.
Now that the moratorium has been lifted, I look forward to more Prince reactions. And *PLEASE* go with the deep cuts. 🙏🏼 -Kiss and Lets Go Crazy are frat boy sports bar staples- 🤦🏽♂️
this is one of the few songs of prince that don't go anywhere musically from that era, didn't like it until i paid attention to the lyrics. actually tbh it does go somewhere: it goes nowhere - which is what the song is about in some way. existential crisis funk vibes
Not sure if you heard "Mountains" one of my favorites. "Girls & Boys" also great. Heck... you need to clear a month and do album by album track by track!
Also, from watching other channels, it appears that if you make brief comments while pausing the music video or song and then continuing might help avoid many copyright issues. Just an fyi and I really enjoy your channel!

What you’re listening to. Every instrument is being played by prince.

Yup, never got into video games back then but I had A LOT of blank tapes to record from the radio. 👏🏾✌🏽
This WHOLE album is a masterpiece💯 Mos Def on my list of albums I'd have if stuck on a deserted island forever.
Love this song. It was so unique when it first came out. Prince was so ahead of his time. Keep digging in P’s discography. He has so many gems to uncover!
i agree. at least from dirty mind to lovesexy, you felf something new was happening.

One of his best albums-well…they all were his best-musical genius. It’s the guitar for me.
One of Prince's funkiest.
Always here for prince❤
Yessss. That breakdown is 🔥🔥🔥
Yes! 💜💜💜
Same here ! 💜🕊️
Prince Is Music!!!! RIP King!!
I’m a sucker for Prince on drums! 🙌🏼 King of the syncopated rhythms for sure. He played drums on Judith Hill’s song Turn Up, and it was 🔥🔥🔥

Hey, I'm glad you can dive into some Prince now. Hope you're ready for a wild ride. His catalog is deeeep.
Oh shit ,reminding me of being at Castlemont High in Oakland in 1983.
You taking me back some years with this one. This song got a lot of replay from the “1999” album on my part
oh ands all vocals and instruments, except Jill Jones - additional vocals (as "J.J."). were done by Prince!
Thank you WinnCherri for the request!!!
One of my favorite songs off the 1999 album
He performed every instrument on this one.
REST IN PEACE PRINCE 🕊
I liked him before I heard this way back when he first came on the radio . He was fairly new to the scene then. This tune sealed the deal for me. I was hooked from here on. 💜👑💥
This Song is still fire man. We was jamming at the clubs boyee.😂
The LEGENDARY Iconic Mr Prince Rogers Nelson
I love this chaotic and sexy song.
Loved his bass playing on this. His instrumentation PERIOD!!! My favorite artist!! My mom could keep me from playing this lol i was 19 when this came out
Enjoy your Prince journey. Welcome 2 the club. 😊
Yep, the boy was a mess😂 😂😂😂
This is his best album!

I liked all of Prince's albums 😊💜
Cool song. Sounds good live on 1999 tours, they're on you tube, comes after "how come u don't call me anymore?" Live has a nice guitar solo by dez
That’s Prince on Bass and Drums!!!
And guitar and keyboards. The whole song is Prince by himself.
Lady Cab Driver suggestive screams and noises courtesy of Jill Jones. She's also a great singer, check out "Violet Blue", "G-Spot" and "Mia Bocca".
This WNTIRE album is FIRE!! 1999 and everything that came before it was the Rude Boy Prince that I fell in love with and that my mama hated, LOL!!

❤ Lady Cab Driver ❤

Was once a lady, can driver...😊

This album right here, nice WinnCherri.
It was all him.

A TRUE MUSICAL TREASURE ❤❤❤
💗
Just the audio are the best versions of Prince songs. Most of his videos cut off the best parts of his songs.
Every single instrument and vocal is Prince on this song except for the girl moaning. Was only 23 or 24. Keep that in mind
🧡

First....🎉🎉🎉❤
Just don’t show the video as you watch it. We’ll still hear the audio
