Separett Tiny Compost Toilet: Maintenance and Issues To Watch For

  • Hi guys! I get lots of questions about my compost toilet. I had an issue recently with my Separett Tiny compost toilet. The black gasket that fits on to the liquids tank failed and the cost of ordering another, to Canada, is ridiculous. So I went looking for options and ended up...well you'll see. I thought I'd tell you about it while also showing how to clean this brand of toilet. I give the bowl a good spray rinse with vinegar/water solution each use and once a week I spray with a cleaning solution. Monthly I pull it apart and give everything a good wash. It's super easy and quick.
    I hope you find it informative.

    I WAS actually just wondering how your tub repairs are holding up. And I see by the counter viewers can see that you've officially ticked over to 40k subscribers. Congratulations! I know it's not the 100k you were aiming for last year but up is up. And I'm glad to see more people are getting on board your bandwagon.

    I would rather have a flush toilet. Less work. Haa Haa, no good very bad day for you! Do they have septic hook ups at the place you are parked? By the way, I just love your shower curtain.❤ Plus, congratulations on your subscribers getting to 40 thousand.❤😊

      Hi. Thanks.
      Yes I'm connected to septic. I'd rather not use potable water to flush a toilet so I prefer this system but two my neighbours have flushing toilets and the others have compost toilets like me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    So you don’t need to use any cover material for the #2’s like peat moss, sawdust or kitty litter? Excellent video.

    • @myBIGtinyhouselife

      Nope. The fan dries things out.

    • @kjellg6532
      @kjellg6532 29 дней назад

      You do not.
      In fact “composting” is misleading. This is a separating toilet, separating #1 and #2. You normaly drop #2 in the trash and thats about it. Adding moss, sawdust, coconut etc only leads to having to dispose the #2 more often. Of cause you can drop #2 in a composting bin for 12 months, but that is totally outside this toilet.

    Not for the faint of heart (toilet talk that is - 😂)! Makes me want to rethink the entire tiny house living and what it truly means. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Seriously, there are so many small yet important details like what kind of toilet to buy. Glad you rethought the whole gasket/ring thing. Don’t you wonder how many niceties, not necessities, we get talked into all the time. Your toilet is just as operable WITHOUT that tiny, little costly part. Today’s video was an educational video brought to you by Adelina and Sophie 🫶🏼💕❤️

    Found u today, binged on a whole bunch of your videos all day, and your journey of moving out of calgary (by the looks of it was from across Olympic park, in fact google maps still shows your tiny house! lol). (Yes I live in calgary...then u move then i find your utube channel 🙄).
    As for the toilet gasket u discussed do u think its purpose is to cushion the pee spout? as it looks like 2 screws rest on the gasket when it closes?
    Do u regret taking out your porcelain toilet? 🍻

    • @myBIGtinyhouselife

      Welcome! 🤗 No I don't regret switching to the compost toilet. I like the fact that I'm not using water. Not having the gasket on has made no difference in the operation of the toilet as far as I can see.

    Since we use our composting toilet on our own property, and have setup a carefully designed exclusive compost bin for it, we use a five gallon bucket with wood shavings. That would not work for you.
    The complexity of parts and technology, the use of electricity to operate the toilet, is a downside to a commercial compost toilet, but worth the extra complexity for situations where the bucket system just won't work... like in an apartment, a tiny house community, an RV park, living in a van, living in a car, and for travel (we bring our bucket on long drives).

    :) THANKS MUCH for sharing! BUT OMG! $50 for a gasket? IF you decide you do need it or them, please let me know and I can order 5 of them for that and Mail them to you on a trip back to Vancouver :) The other thing is the fan can be put on a switched outlet that I have used, it just plugs in ahead of the cord or adapter. ALL the BEST and Cheers! :)

    I think i missed it, but what do you use to deep clean the urine jug? Mine is stuck and i cant figure out what chemical to use to free everything back up! How long do you let them soak?

    • @myBIGtinyhouselife
      @myBIGtinyhouselife  4 месяца назад

      I use vinegar and water with a drop of that same detergent spray I showed. Or sometimes Castile soap and very hot water. I'd fill the jug with hot soapy water and let it soak as long as you can. Then give it good shakes as you are rinsing.
      I don't really let mine soak very long, just as long as it takes to scrub the toilet and other parts.

      Yes and no. Urine IS sterile when it is first excreted from your body. As it sits, it becomes unsterile bc it’s interacting with things in the atmosphere. I know the fully scientific explanation is more complex but this is as much as I’m able to speak to.

    • @myBIGtinyhouselife

      Fair enough but it has less bacteria in it, on average, than most tap water.

    • @kjellg6532

      Well. In old days, doctors took the patiens urine in his mouth to determing if she suffered from diabetes. I thick it is sterile enough.
