Can a Michaels Art and craft class make my cake making skills any better? Maybe I should’ve consulted with the Icing Artist instead..
Today I did my best at making food art, a creative skill I am very poor with 😂 this is probably one of the most terrible creations ive ever made lol

As a professional cake decorator, i think you did a lovely job. It takes repetition to get the techniques down well. Also i took the Michael's cake decorating class back in 2005, back when they were in person. Theres a lot to be said about having a person there to teach you, rather than a video...
I took the classes too! Lol warm hands made gum paste carnations impossible for me. Ironically my coworker who was also taking the classes was only good at the carnations.
Congratulations on getting married!!🎉🎉
Thank you so much!!
@@ChloeRoseArtCan you make more videos with him?!?
Congrats
Congratulations to you both 🖤 @ChloeRoseArt
I think you did great. I think they need to make their tutorials a little more beginner friendly. I really want to see you try an Icing Artist tutorial. I love her, she gives all kinds of useful tips.
I think putting the cake in the fridge for a while between the crumb coat and the actual frosting could help, cake decoraters seems to chill their cakes all the time xD
Firstly Congrats on your Wedding!!!!! And your cake did look great! Would love to see you do more food art!!
Crappy home made cakes are the best! You did an awesome job and made it your own. My mam made me a 3 tier marshmallow rice crispy cake, chocolate, strawberry and plain. Looked ugly, but she made it and it tasted waaaay better than the rice crispy bars in store.
Chloe, I think it is really cool that tried something outside your comfort zone.
I remember taking a couple cake classes a one of the craft store. I believe it was free at the time. We just had to purchase the kits. The classed were either a month or two. Then you get a certificate. Then you can proceed to the next level. The person that was teaching us was a professional. They had worked for Wilton in the past. So they were knowledgeable. They taught us and gave us some inside knowledge. Every week we learn something. Then when you meet up. You bring a cake and decorate with the knowledge you had learn previously.
Wow I didnt know Micheal's did art classes either, learned something new today!!
I took a cake decorating class in person. I guess they do them online now.
Been baking cakes since I was young. Just following the directions on the box. I don't know what's so confusing about it.
I'm a employee at michaels for 3 years now,r they mention it every 30 minutes on the store radio, but I never watched any lol
I LOVE my necklace! And huge shoutout to you for partnering with such an amazing company! My dogs paw snagged the chain when we were snuggling a few months ago, and it snapped. 😢 i was sooooo sad and I wasn’t able to repair it myself. Reached out to Ana Luisa, and they have a 2 year warranty! My replacement should be here any day! They were so responsive and it was only 48 hrs from the time I reached out to them to receiving my new shipment notification. Love the product, the top notch company, and love your videos Chloe! Long time follower! 🤗🥰
Yeah! The added texture you added to the top of the cake looks great! Well done!
Chloe you were my biggest inspiration to start my own RUclips channel and I’m having so much fun making videos, so thank you for everything!! 🥹❤️
I just checked out your channel, I really like your content. New subscriber 😊
@@JessNVah thank you so much! That’s so lovely 🥰
All pastry arts and baking takes time and practice. To get your icing smoother you and sit your metal bowl in another container with hot water, or use a torch on the outside of the bowl. You don't want to do it for long. Just long enough for when you stir it is smoother. You could also have a cup of hot water by you to dip your off-set angle spatula into to help worm it up. This will help you get a smoother surface. You will also want to get yourself a 13 inch off-set angle spatula for spreading your icing. The small one you have is better for taking icing piped flowers off the icing decoration nail. Hope this helps. Oh also students use foam cakes to practice icing and decorating cakes.
Amazing to hear what the pros use, foam and blowtorches, did not expect.
Thank you for this!! Going to screenshot for future reference ✨
Decorating cakes is hard! I let my kids request cakes for their birthdays and use fondant and all of that stuff and it takes hours! 🤣🤦
I love your cake and the added drips and pattern on top! Top job right there! 👌👌
Thank you!! It definitely is really tough hahah
It looks pretty good, I’d be worrying the same and yet I want to keep telling you to relax. The swirls and drips look good, the less smooth icing looks fine, it has more character than perfectly smooth (and a small tool on a big surface does seem hard for not leaving edges). The lurid pink, though, I wonder what goes into that.
I make a cake for each of my friends birthdays (about 10 made so far). And they definitely get better with practice. This is a really good start in all honesty. Cake decorating is so hard!!!!
As someone who bakes only a small amount for fun, you did a good job. Cakes are pretty hard and it takes at least a few times of making it to get the hang of it.
I love Michael's classes!! No matter which class you take, you're going to have people who ask the same questions over and over that should really be basic (like "where do you get the materials"). Honestly, though, when I got into crocheting it was super helpful to learn the basic stitches!
You were working with unfamiliar ingredients. Be sweet to yourself! ❤ It looks really cute!! 😍 Actually, I think Moriah Elizabeth's donut queen would totally approve!! 😉🍩 And tasty - the most important part!! 😋 One thing I learned from my mom is to put the bottom layer on upside down. Most plates have a bowl shape, and it will take the bump in stride that way! 🤗 I'd go for a yummy homemade cake any day over a glamorous one that doesn't taste as good! 🥰
I now want Moriah Elizabeth to make a donut queen cake!
Just placed my order for your necklace❣️it really resonates with me. My partner passed 6 months ago and I need this necklace in my life. I can’t wait to put it on
I'm so sorry 🙁 I hope the necklace is helpful n pray you're surrounded by comfort. 💗🙏
The swirls definitely made it look a lot better -- great troubleshooting. :)
Here’s a fun hack, for less crumbs with cutting the cake too, use unflavored tooth floss, a very long strand of it will give a very smooth and even top by just using a sawing motion with the floss. And if your making the butter cream from scratch try using popcorn salt (if you can still find it it’s finer and melts into the butter cream better, and always use clear extract or you end up with a yellower colored icing. Just some helpful tips. lol yes I use to decorate cakes way back in the day. And remember to just have fun. lol tfs looks delicious
Congrats on your wedding, you looked beautiful and I hope you had a wonderful day and it was all that you hoped it would be ❤❤
Congratulations Chloe!!!🥳💖
Edit: Great job on your cake!! It looks perfect!
I was a cake decorator in a store for awhile, it’s not easy Chloe!! And you were doing it via a live video class. Give yourself grace, cake decorating is hard, the lady facilitating is a cake ARTIST, self taught or not, it’s something she worked at. She didn’t start off with perfect cakes, she started off by trying. Which is what you so vulnerably for us! A beautiful first attempt in learning 💕🖤💕
This video was very fun! I'd love to see more baking videos!!
Hi Chloe good job on the cake 😂 congratulations on your wedding ❤❤❤
Moriah Elizabeth needs that cake drip!! Cake looks great, enjoyed this video!
For future classes, I recommend watching it with a screen recorder on so you can replay it from the beginning while you’re trying to do the craft
Your cake looks absolutely amazing, I don't understand why you're so hard on yourself! You're an artist, you know it takes practice to be super at something. The lady doing the class has been doing this for many years. Don't get discouraged! If you think it's fun, just practice. It looks beautiful and I wish I'd known about such classes sooner, it'd make My cake decorating journey a lot less chaotic bahahaha
Hullo Chloe, My very Best Wishes on your wedding bliss! Congratulations to your husband! I have taken quite a few Michael’s classes and many as LIVE Events! Lindsay Weirich “The Frugal Crafter” teaches classes on their channel as well as live Zoom classes! I hope you continue to stretch your decorating muscles! You can do it! Thank you for sharing this experience with us. Happy marriage to you and your beau. Oh keeping your tools clean is so important keeping a bowl of warm/hot water handy can help. I did not watch this video class so I’m not sure if the teacher gave that information to you!
Congratulations on your wedding🎉!!, And you did a really good job on the cake!!.
Hi Chloe. I am so happy that you uploaded because every day I check my RUclips to see if hi posted a new video. You are amazing and the cake is stunning! I also love your dog (I am a massive dog-lover). Thank you so much for this video. I love you ❤
Chloe the cake looks amazing I love the extra details you added 🩷🧁🍰
I’m so proud of you!!! I have the same issue with my cake showing through the icing all the time! This was amazing to watch. As someone who has learned to bake via RUclips, it was nice to see another person just be imperfect and have a beautiful cake at the end🎉
Firstly, congratulations on the wedding! I hope the day was a dream for you and hubby!
Honestly you did a really good job!
Ideally it's better to chill the crumb coat layer before moving on to the main coat but given time restraints I'm guessing that's why it was skipped.
I love watching your videos. I work third shift as a nurse in a prison and sometimes RUclips is what gets me through. I am not an artist by any stretch of anyone's imagination. But I love watching your videos because you are real. You are pretty and talented, but in some areas you are a hot mess and you own that. Seeing you being your true self is the best thing you could do on RUclips. I hope more young women watch you and know they don't have to be perfect to be successful. And I love your positivity, even when things aren't going right.
Your cake was gorgeous! She had a more even cake to begin with. Home made cake is fresh and tastes better.
I think hobby craft has been doing this and in-shop classes for about 4 years now though they haven had any that I was interested in at the moment but your cake looked good at the end considering you didn't pause it, personally I would have used roll out icing as it seems easier to mould to the cake :)
Lol cake decorating can be maddening… and fun. Fondant is like playing with playdough but is def fussy. I think you did great - esp with a live class. A lot of time they move too fast, thats where the upload next day might be better for pausing, lol.
For the first time for cake decoration. You did a amazing job.😁👍🏼
I caved and got the Chloe Necklace, can’t wait for it to arrive! Thank you Chloe ❤
The texture you added at the end looks great! Even in between, the icing and everything, I think it looks pretty 👍 I think you’ll definitely get better results with a bit more practice, and maybe not having to rush to follow along with the class while still filming a video!
It looks great!
I didn't know Michael's had classes either! You did a great job! Congrats on the wedding!❤
That looks amazing and the swirls at the end on top were a great added touch ❤️ xx
Congrats! Also your cake looks so delicious!🎂
I think the donut drips actually make the cake look great!🥰
Chloe… that donut cake is adorable.
Chloe, congratulations on getting married. I love the way you decorated your kitchen. Looks retro to me!
Love your channel always Chloe ❤
This was such a fun watch! I'm not a professional but I've done cake decorating with my mom since I was young. I have to say, you did amazing! It can be hard not to compare yourself when in an art class because you're watching someone else who has years of experience. A lot of things need to be learned firsthand and it may not be perfect on your first try but nothing ever is right?
Congrats on your wedding!!!! The cake looked awesome, and thanks for posting, loved the video!!
I think you do an amazing job on the cake Chloe! Looks awesome and delicious at the same time! Great job!❤❤❤
Congrats Chloe!
You cake looks yummy!!!! I think you did a fantastic job! I’ve tried that once and it’s NOT easy! 💜
I think you did great! It’s so hard when you can’t pause a tutorial, so I reckon this was a major success 🙌☺️✨
Congratulations on your wedding!!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Absolutely incredible art on these prompts!!! So creative and inspiring! Would love to see more create this book on your channel 😍😍
Ooooee! The swirls and the drips you did you did at the end where a really good idea.
I definitely agree that the in person teacher is a good way to go for cake decorating. But just like with anything, practice, repetition, and patience is the key! You did a good job! 👍👍 Michael's should have sponsored you! Lol
You did fantastic! Don’t downplay your first time doing this lol it’s not easy like another commenter said it takes repetition to get these skills I was lucky when I became a cake decorator that I had some natural skill to it do to my absolute obsession with it growing up lol! I love you and all your vids and congrats on the wedding ❤
I need u to take a deep breath and listen very carefully. If I came on your channel and was complaining that my third time painting my results weren’t the same as yours what would u say? You would tell me my results were great for what little experience I had and tell me to keep practicing. This woman has probably made a 1000 cakes. Yours looks great. You are new to the subject that’s all. I would recommend u take an in person class at Michael’s or Joann’s or hobby lobby. The Wilton classes are a bit dated for material but it helps u learn some basics then the rest of the you tube videos become easier. And just keep practicing. I have been doing it for like 15 years off and on and I can’t get a smooth coat. I can get pretty good but I still find dents in it and stuff.
Like many things, this is a skill that takes time, the more you do it the better you get. Her cakes probably looked like yours in the beginning and yours looks pretty damn good for a beginner.
Freezing will help a lot with crumb coat sticking
I think it look amazing!
It's a wonderful cake! I really like it and you did you're best😊
It looks great.
Thanks for the video 🤗
Greetings from the Netherlands
I think it looks great!
I loved this I hope Micheal’s contacts you to do real beginner art classes you did great ❤️💓
Good job Chloe. I'm not interested in baking but you're so much fun to watch I had fun anyway. I hope you do more videos following live tutorials. Maybe even try something you have absolutely no experience with. I bet that would be absolute chaos but also hilarious!
I love baking and I too don't know how to decorate one but I could definitely give it a go (though I couldn't afford to buy the ingredients at Michaels I'd have to shop around a bit)
It turned out really nice and i bet it tasted great.
.
it actually turned out really great! 💕
It is sooo cute!
My number one philosophy for cake decorating is: "What mistakes can I cover up?"
As a cake decorator, my hand was itching to go in and help you out 😂 honestly it looks very good. Don't beat yourself up over the comparison.
You did great❤ my grandma did cakes and decorating for years. She tried teaching me but it never took lol its definitely an art form 🎉
I think it looked great!
Your cake came out so cute, though! The instructor is an instructor for a reason
Don't forget they put things like the doughnuts and cake in the fridge for a bit to stop the icing getting too runny and put the cake in the fridge after doing the frosting for each of the layers, so that cake to decorate probably took a few hours to achieve the look,
I would love to have gotten your necklace but I wish the chain length was more inclusive.
The cake came out cute!!
Nobody is perfect the first time. We learn and get better. It's a process. Be proud of what you've done
You did a great job keep making themif you enjoy it you will get better. Congratulations
Congrats on your wedding🎉🎉🎉.
You’ve probably already been told this in your comments, but I don’t have time to read through them, so my apologies if this is a repeat. A fellow RUclipsr, Lindsay, “TheFrugalCrafter”, teaches free classes online for Michael’s. She does a lot of projects with Derwent products and mostly painting type projects. I’m a HORRIBLE baker. I try and it’s always edible, but just might not look good 😆 Yours looked good! Don’t criticize yourself so harshly! If that cake was given to me, I would love it. And CONGRATS to the newlyweds! Wishing you many years of love, laughter and happiness! 🩵🩷
I think your cake turned out great!
That was fun to watch.
I think you did a great job on your cake!
I think you did a great job!
honestly id love to see you try another class!
Valiant effort!
A couple tips... Yes, your offset spatula isn't long enough. Also, my mom always kept a glass of HOT water to dip her offset into while smoothing the icing on her cakes.
Congratulations on getting married!!So happy for you!=3 You did a lovely job. The cake looks delicious and cute=3
The class did you dirty! The way the crumb coat works is that you do it and then put the whole cake in the fridge for 20-30mins to firm up! Then you do the top coat 😊 I think it looked cute though! I like the idea of using the donuts as decorations 😋
Also I highly recommend Cuocake Jemma. She is on RUclips. They are from SoHo so next time u r in London you can pop in. Anyway several years ago she did a cake icing master class. It taught me a ton.
Aww hon its not that to bad it just takes practice dear 💖 Congrats on your Wedding dear 💖
Don't be hard on yourself!
The cake looks fine 😊
I learned how to decorate sugar cookies from a RUclips creator SweetAmbs. I watched her videos religiously, and eventually got to where I was good enough to sell my cookies at farmers market. It took a lot of practice, but it was so much fun.
Great job it looks pretty good and learning to cook or bake it’s important to know how to fix mistakes. I think you had problems with smoothing the buttercream because it was too thick next time try beating it longer or adding more room temperature butter. The room temperature butter has a different consistency than butter softened in the microwave but getting it light and airy helps with smoothing and getting out air bubbles. I think you can make your own buttercream from scratch just as easily you should try that in another video, I know you can do it.
Mmmm. Now I'm hungry! It came out nice!
You should try the buttercream transfer method. I bet you could do something cool :)
