    1000 miles in the books with the mower carb - in 95 degree heat even.
    do I support running a mower carb as a legitimate thing? absolutely not.
    has it been entertaining to see how far and how ridiculous I could go with it? indeed it has.

      I'd disagree, running your mower carb. seemed to have gotten (legit) ridiculous gas mileage, just not a lot of power. With your talents would like to see you adjust your setup to a smaller displacement engine that doesn't have the fuel requirements. Think with a smaller old engine that use a one-barrel carb. to start with, you might even see a increase in power (& gas mileage) over stock (actually you should..).

      Yeah, you should at least run a 50-125cc motorcycle carb so you get an accelerator pump. Would love to see you do this to a 22re or some other carbed 4 banger. Also, you should try and run it a little more rich. Running that lean creates a bunch of NOX.

    Well it may be hard to get EXACT mpg figures but I think it's safe to say at this point that the mpg is somewhere in the "pretty f'n good" range.

      Yep... just need to compare with another running roughly the same engine, it is not about winning on losing but just to compare.

      @@everydayirace and how do you know how far 12 miles is without a speedo or a working odometer? And even if the odometer worked, they are often out of calibration. The only accurate way to work out economy would be to use a measuring wheel and mark out the 12 miles, then use an accurately marked fuel can directly connected to the engine. Anything less is an educated guess like he is taking.

    I'm from Brazil, and it's not that uncommon to see cars running with small motorcicle carbs over here with minor to none adjustments. Still, to see a big (by brazilian standarts, since we're used to having 1.0l shitboxes all over the streets) V8 engine running as good as this with a tiny little carb is impressive.
    Consider me subscribed.

      What you describe must be in rural Brasil, this definitely is not the case in Sao Paulo, the cars are modern EFI and newer for the most part. Also tiny vehicles are the norm as I'm sure you know, but that's neither here nor there.
      Just got back from 33 days in Itaim Bibi SP, good times. Beer is cheap and cold, ordering double fisted with caprihinas and a beer, usually Colorado or Antarctica, unless something cheaper is on the menu. 13-16 reais normal price for 600ml beer at a restaurant, you cannot beat these prices in the USA, especially with the exchange rate being over 5 to 1. Caprihinas cost like $10-$12 in the USA if you go to the local Brasilian Churrascaria, I just drink lemonade instead and save the alcohol consumption for home.
      Saw a pristine 67 Opala at Shopping Ibirapuera (mall) one Sunday, folks were taking selfies with the car. Cool car.

      @@cunninghamer I'm American, but go down there a couple of times a year. Yes, that is correct, Brazilian ethanol is sugar cane derived. And they sell it neat at the pumps - E100. Every fuel station has E100 at the pump, unlike in the USA where E85 is getting hard to find.
      Wish I had an LS swapped Opala for ripping around down there. Maybe someday.

      @@cunninghamer Yup. I got a 1995 Ford Fiesta Mk3 with a 1 liter Zetec Rocam with around 11.4:1 compression and it ran with 0.9 Bar (13 psi) of boost. 105whp and 13kgfm (94lbft) on it. I'm reaching 13.3km/l (31.2 mpg) on it and considering the ethanol cost between 80% of the price of 87-92 octane gasoline per liter or 67-70% of 98-100 octane gasoline, it can be a bargain to run some cars on it.
      The hydrated ethanol (around 5% water) we have here behaves almost like 100 octane gas. It's pretty hard to knock the engine. I saw cars running with 14:1 compression with hydrate ethanol without any issues.

      Yeah a motorcycle carb would a LOT more tunable, somewhere around a 40mm to 60mm on a v8 I think.

    2 things my Dad did that helped with temps. 1. oil cooler on Dodge Van we often overloaded for work or vacations. He actually mounted it outside the front of Van, worked like a charm, but we got lucky and never had a accident. 2. Water injector on 69 VW Van. Fixed knocking and overheating issues. Was funny when traveling in Nevada we had just got gas and my Dad realized he hadn't filled the water tank and water was used up for drinking as well. So we stopped at next station pulled up to water pump, filled up and was about to pull out when attendant asked if we needed gas. My Dad told him he had installed a new system and it ran on water now. The look on that man's face as we drove off still makes me smile.

      Try using the a/c condenser for the trans cooler for a larger cooling area. Worked for me when I put a 351W in a Mustang 2. The original radiator/trans cooler wasn't effective at keeping the trans or engine cool.

    Boats have a blower set up to clear the vapors from the engine bay. Most boats have an air scoop on one side and an air exit scoop on the opposite side. The reason I bring this up is (as a mechanic shop owner) I had a customer with a diesel truck come in for repairs. I told him I would get on it in a hour after it cooled down. He said I didn't have to wait, the engine was cool to the touch. Then he took me out and showed me the two boat air scoops he had installed on the hood. And yes, the cooling system was hot but the motor and accessories were cool enough to work on.

      When you say Boat Scoops, what exactly do you mean? I have a 72 Dart with twin scoops on a factory hood (not Snorkle style) They are spaced even and symmetrical, facing forward. In the example you are speaking of with the 'boat scoops', would they be asymmetrical and one mounted 180° to the other?

      @@williammcewen1466 yes, exactly. Air inlet on driver's side of hood and air outlet on passenger side.
      (Safety reasons, in case radiator blows you don't want coolant or anything else coating the driver side windshield.)
      Think about what's going on here. All that air entering the engine bay only has one exit. Down the firewall and under the car. If air in flow is greater than the exit flow then the air slows down and builds pressure (and heat, from radiator, engine, exhaust manifolds). Usually, the manufacture tries to match the radiator inlet area to the firewall exit area (in sq. inches). But, there is a lot of things in this area to cause aerodynamic drag (slow down the air flow). This is offset by the air flow being hot, and therefore thinner (which also tries to rise) but if you measure radiator area you'll find it comes just a little under the exit area available at bottom of fire wall.
      By adding a boat scoop set to the hood your creating a cross flow across the engine.
      I couldn't believe it when I saw it, but I could lay my hand on that engine for minutes without discomfort. And it had just driven 15 miles in the city. It was a diesel, so make of that what you will but diesels usually have a lot more iron to the block than a gas engine. All I know is that you'd never cook an egg on that engine.
      Also, there are a wide range of scoop sizes and designs for a boat so you can find something cool looking. I never tried it myself as I drive a motorcycle, so all I can relate is my experience. The customer swore by it though, he transported boats for a living (big ones). It's how he got the idea, doing long hauls up inclines and watching the temp gauge rise.

      A big Yes on this! I have a 2002 Mustang, and it is a hot box! I have ben looking for vents, or a vented fiberglass hood. Boats have those vents mostly for fuel vapor.

      @@ravenrock541 OK. Guess I'm going to shop for boat scoops lol I mentioned my 72 Dart only because it has factory scoops. But I have a 90 D100 truck that's a hotbox. It's regularly hits 205° + driving around town and I'm not happy with that. New thermostat didn't help, about to install an aluminum radiator, and possibly fans. Cross flow ventilation might be the ticket.
      I don't mind cutting a pair of small holes in the hood, it's an 'art truck' anyhow (as my wife calls it) lowered by 6" front and back.
      I looked up some part #s, like Attwood #1364A3 (found on Amazon) but then I also seen some more flush mounted louvers. Then, there are also fender vents. There are too many vent options! Lol

    SWEET! Running a car steady speed on a level road takes no power at all. Going uphill/accelerating is the toughest part with this setup. But with that fuel economy you're getting and these gas prices around the world, I think you created a masterpiece! I really want to see the controller.

      There’s already a company that’s done a electric hybrid V8. I don’t think it’s possible for this setup though. It’s so weak it might not have the power to spin all the components as well as make the car move.

    I have been following this mower carb project in awe and with great admiration. Between you and Uncle Tony I also picked up tons of smart carburetor tricks to get my Hudson running great. I get 26 to 28 mpg with the original side valve L6 stove bolt and an original carburetor & dizzy setup. I do have a TH700R4 behind it though. That probably helps a lot.
    When I first owned the car the previous owner had a double pumper on it. It was running extremely rich and I would only get around 24 mpg. When running the numbers on volumetric efficiency that standard 170 cfm carb makes much more sense and off idle it holds its own pretty good.

    Had a 1980 Chevette and found the original window sticker that claimed it would get 41mpg.
    It never got close to that.
    Makes ya wonder what they were thinking even back then.

    I mean for real, power numbers aside getting that mpg from that engine in that car is amazing. For what it is and what it's doing it's a hell of an accomplishment.

    Right on Luke, an experimenting mechanic ran a motorcycle carb on a 283 chevy, thru 2 sandwiched & boxed new heater cores flowing hot coolant thru them to double his best tuned fuel economy (17mpg to mid 30's mpg). Hardly any loss of power And no overheating because the gasoline evaporated thru the heater cores, removing major btu's thru latent heat of evaporation. Combine that with your AA/FRAS "carb cheater" system for the win & less tinkering while driving. Great content Luke!

      @@jimthvac100 The overheating issue was not related to the lawnmower carb per se, but to his homemade "stop sign" radiator fan shroud. At idle & low power/speeds the small electric fan worked good, but at highway speeds/more power, temps kept creeping up do to lack of air flow. All this was happening during the annual Hot Rod power tour (which was extra hot & humid.) Luke was uploading videos about these problems as he stopped for repairs/modifications along the trip. See his power tour videos for the details & multiple solutions to fix the over heating. He had overheating on a 4 barrel carb and the lawn mower carb by the way.

    I think you shocked a lot of people with this setup and that was part of the reasons you did it isn't it?
    That fuel milage on a trip like this is nothing to be ashamed of... it was a lot less money out of the wallet at the fuel stops.
    From reading the stuff Smokey yurich said about his V-twin in a Volkswagen Rabbit and understanding what the higher vacuum levels you have with this setup do to the fuel I can fully see why you are getting the mileage.
    I look forward to seeing more on your carb cheater system.

      This is the end of his “carb cheater system” he’s already gone through the entire build process with every equation and formula to go along with it. Sure I’m times like this saving gas is almost a necessity, but nobody drives a V8 to save gas. He did this out of spite to the naysayers who said he couldn’t on the internet. Bravo.

      Um a rabbit with a Tdi swap can have 300tq and get 60mpg.
      If you turn fuel way down 90+mpg is possible.

      @@fastinradfordable I think you should learn more of what Smokey did with his Vapor system on his V-Twin that he welded up from Steel. By the way his naysayers said the welded engine block wouldn't work but it did and did quite well I understand. This was done long before there was a VW TDI engine. He then put the system on a Chevy Citation with a V6. You should learn more little known automotive history so you know more what was done before.

    your choice of music rocks, also want to say thanks, i grew up learning the hard way, no school for me, no internet, built many transmissions, engines and other stuff by just messing up to learn. you have a way of teaching that makes it easy for us adhd people :) i am so impressed with the mower carb it gives me hope for the younger generations, im one of those who appreciate the younger people, i learn stuff from my kids and grand kids all the time, thanks for the inspiring videos.

    Just for everyone that was saying itd be too rich/lean. A Carb will only pull as much fuel as it can with the air it can flow. The Volumetric Efficiency, essentially how much each cylinder is being filled with an Air Fuel mixture, will be shit but it each cylinder will be equal.
    Love the experiment Luke! I hope we get to see more of this in some way shape or form

    I know this is an old video but re: overheating issues, try adding a front spoiler. It may sound dumb but hear me out :)
    You probably have high air pressure right underneath your rad now, keeping the hot air from escaping down there and blocking rad air flow.
    The spoiler creates a low pressure zone behind it and "sucks" air out of the engine compartment.
    I was having overheating issues at motorway speeds and just lived with it until I installed a fiberglass hood and noticed it was being pushed up at about 45-50 mph and up, clearly high air pressure. So I added a small diy spoiler, just some 3ft x 6" steel plate right below the rad and it made a huge difference! The hood stays put and cooling has improved immensely, haven't seen it go above thermostat temp yet!
    And kudos on doing power tour on a lawnmower carb!

    Another Iowa boy here, thank you for representing! Very cool experiment, I've been watching your videos and I never thought it would go the distance but I'm really glad that it did. My (Crazy) Uncle was a mechanical engineer and during his Masters program at ISU he built a fuel injection system that could be adjusted while driving (this was back in the 80's). He drove to CA to Hillborne Engineering with it in his 67 Ford pickup back then. I'm not sure what they did with it but I know they sent him a highrise intake for a small block chevy that they built from his research, casting #3. I wish I had that thing, I'm not sure what happened to it.

      Or make some kind of throttle linkage and intake so it opens one mower carb until half throttle and then it opens the other mower carb until full throttle. Then he can get more power and still have the really good mpg

      Been kinda wondering about a multi lawn mower carb setup too, as weird as it sounds haha. Not having any enrichment circuits would still hurt performance but there could be improvements over the single carb. I can't help but think if each carb is good for even 50hp, a pair of them with progressive linkage on my 250 chevy inline 6 might be a fun project.

    That's pretty cool you probably spend a 10th of what JYD spend on the power tour it really cuts down the hp being such a small carb but you were able to keep up fairly easy after you popped the hood off
    Congratulations I have to admit I might of been one of the doughters good work I'm happy to take back anything I might of said on Instagram you proved everyone wrong way to go .

      yeup I think you are right. image a 4 cylinder with thin oil, lots of bearing clearance and no junk in the trunk.

      @@cobrajet8866 and add to that 4 cylinder EFI and bang, you have literally half of the world engines :-) Only in America most common engine is V8, rest of the world uses inline 4 with EFI for around 30 years

    What would be cool is a second carb with a progressive linkage for wide open throttle scenarios . Make the manifold like a y shape or do it old school like a old mopar crossram on a hemi

    Really good job Luke! Thank you for making this video i was hoping utg would’ve kinda seen what he could do with the concept but he didn’t realy seem too interested in the concept, but he congratulated you on your achievement as well! I drive my 94 f-150 4x4 5.0 5 speed like a tractor too ive been getting 19mpg at best and about 14 at worst. I shift below 2500 rpm’s and when going down hill push the clutch in and let it idle down.

      Dont just push the clutch in and hold it, put the truck in nuetral and release the clutch as it is way easier on the throw out bearing.

      @@SuperBigdanno Best to leave it in gear on a downhill- the truck will stop pulsing the injectors at all on a closed throttle decel. You will use no fuel once the ECM goes into that mode.

      Not sure if you have ever drove a manual or not but if you push the clutch in or put in neutral and let the clutch out the engine will return to idle... unless of course you hold the throttle open which would defeat the purpose.

      The ignition timing required to make the holley optimal is notably different than that of the mower carb unfortunately.

    I am curious what the carb cheater can do hooked to a normal carb on the engine, would it be able to help increase gas mileage on it. Obviously I am not expecting 40mpg or anything that high but even a 3-5 boost could be worth while. Glad you enjoyed the power tour with your dad that is what life is about thanks for sharing what you did it is more than ever expected.

      it's not likely to make a difference simply because the carb cheater is just making adjustments that a normal carbuerator for a car will make on its own. It would still be cool to see though.

      @@zragevii4705 A carb won't make those adjustments, that's the thing. The carb will suck as much fuel as the carb bore and jets allow it to. If it's jetted too rich it'll run dirty rich. With a carb cheater it would open that 'controlled vacuum leak' to try to get more air into the intake manifold to make up for that rich jetting, effectively allowing more air in than the carb's bore would in a normal circumstance. While it won't increase mileage most likely, it'll provide the appropriate AFR to allow full combustion of a rich mixture, so you're getting as much power as possible for the fuel you're pulling in, and not wasting any.
      A carb that's jetted too lean will not be helped by a carb cheater, and a carb that is properly jetted will only have minimal help from a carb cheater, because it'll only be making small adjustments.
      On the lawnmower carb there it was a full 2-3 parts rich IIRC, so thus there was a good bit of wasted fuel and power left on the table by not getting it mixed to stoich without the carb cheater.

      @@WiscomptonBoys the car cheater was mostly built to adjust for load and other issues that are remedied by accelerator pumps and other parts in a vehicle cabr that a lawnmower carb does not have. you are correct in Stating however that it could help on a vehicle that is jetted far too rich.

    I find it interesting that no one is talking about the Rochester quadrajet carburetor. With it's small primaries, it actually was a very fuel efficient carburetor for it's time.
    Note I owned a Plymouth Cuda 440 6 Bbl, when my enlistment was up with the Army at Ft. Carson Colorado in 1975. I had to drive back home to Allentown Pennsylvania with the car.
    To get some decent fuel mileage I disconnected the dumps and wired them shut. Like most people who owned those cars it was hard to keep your foot out of it.
    So I drove with only the center two barrel supplying all my fuel needs and still had decent power.
    Driving the posted speed limits for that time, with a 4 speed and 4:10 axle ratio in the rear. I managed 17.5 MPG Note: Again I drove with only the center carb supplying fuel. So running a carb with smaller primaries is a benefit to fuel economy. I commend you for demonstrating the benefit of that concept with the lawnmower carb. By using a carburetor with an extremely small venturi and fuel metering circuit Kudo's for doing what engineer's came up with over 40 years ago...

    I’m slightly annoyed at your lack of a controlled fuel economy test, it’s nice to see the dyno for sure but the main question here is the mileage in my mind. You should do a controlled test and then put the Holley back on and do the exact same test and compare. You could make a dedicated video for that.

      GPS is probably more accurate than what they had back in the day... I thought he mentioned the holley MPGs in the past.. Maybe he will get indepth with it in a future video..

      Chevettes are horrible on gas to start with because they are so underpowered. I had an ‘87 for my daily driver back when I was 18 and it only ever got in the teens for fuel mileage, you could watch the gas gauge drop in a good headwind!

    Do you know what engine hp the carb came off of? Maybe a slightly larger carb would be the ticket for a touch more power and only a few mpg down. Even at 35mpg you would be golden and if it had an extra 25hp

      He should do a second identical carb with a progressive linkage that starts to crack the second carb at half throttle, and fully opens at full throttle. I figure that would put him somewhere in the 110-125 hp range with the same fuel economy at lower throttle. but enough power to pass and merge into those tight gaps. Dual carbs with that realtime AFR adjuster would be the dream setup

    My old man put a single barrel weber carb on a Mopar 273 v8, got great mileage and the power was more than enough for the Ford Bronco he dropped it into while waiting for parts for the ford v8. If memory serves it was one of a twin weber set from a VW 1600 bug engine. The Bronco eventually got it's number matching engine back but that Mopar 273 with a single barrel carb had my old man grinning from ear to ear, it even had enough grunt to pop a wheelie and almost flip the car. We never had access to a dyno so who knows what it made but I am guessing not a lot, under 100hp for sure.
    A great way to keep that v8 exhaust note and get some decent/great mileage too. Might be worth looking into with today's more efficient carbs, particularly with the cost of fuel right now.

      Hard to say, gear ratio is not the only factor.
      I have 5-speed 4-cylinder truck with highway gear (rear end 3.43) pulling a utility trailer with a expanded metal tailgate (parachute) in 5th gear max speed with trailer 60 mph go faster putting it in 4th (direct drive).
      But that motor likes rpm to make max power: horsepower is the better scenario for that drivetrain.
      Having higher torque style motor and drivetrain putting a gearvendors' overdrive, might be interesting playing around project.
      Being 4-speed after 1st gear meaning I think they said to run 2nd would be fine I think.
      Double check with gearvendors before trying.

      @@tolbertgraves2064 Yeah, you don't want to try engaging the Gear Vendors OD unit in 1st. Not enough oil pressure. Also, avoid having it engaged while trying to go in reverse. A lot of the Volvos between the 1960s and the 1990s used the same basic overdrive unit on the back of a 4-speed manual transmission.
      Did the latter on a 1983 240 Turbo wagon. Had the factory 4th gear switch bypassed, since it was fried. Overdrive switch on the shift knob randomly worked for disengagement. Worked great to engage, but, not so well with disengaging. Pulled into a parking spot, then noticed that a closer spot to the store was available. Went into reverse. Heard a rather loud bang from underneath the car. Overdrive worked for another 8,000 miles before it made some expensive noises after being engaged. Lost "5th" gear, and 1st gear when the car was warm. Was able to get home using 2nd-4th gears. Parked it for a few days, then limped it 50 miles to a friend's shop so I could use his lift and swap the overdrive unit with a spare I had lying around. About 5 miles from his shop, the car started slipping in 4th gear. Made it, though.

      I will release the carb cheater which I think is actually beneficial to people. I will not on the mower carb since you can see although it seems "practical", it's also fairly impractical.
      Can it be done? Yes.
      Should it be done? No.
