Fallout is alternate universe, in Fallout universe America adopted nuclear based technology Atompunk style. So technology progress a lot but still retained 50s-60s aesthetic. Also Lucy use Stimpak to heal her stab wound, Stimpak is stimulants that boost body's regenerative function. It can make wound heal almost instantaneously and can heal anything short of dead.

      "still retained 50s-60s aesthetic"
Sort of. It is retrofuturist, which means that if you look at pictures of the future that were created in the 50s, that is what it looks like. They have robots, weird cars, monorails and so on.

Also re stimpack, there's nothing in the lore that says they do that; that's a game mechanic like eating cheese wheels in skyrim.
You routinely deal with corpses from people who tried saving their lives with a stimpack.
If they worked like in the show, you would not need an auto-doc. Also Curie specifically mentioned she improves the stimpack to close wounds. The show has a vault with no contact with the outside world, therefore they don't have the improved stimpack.
The Lone Wanderer: "Here, take some Stimpaks. That should get him through."
Madison Li: "Yes, this looks to be enough. He'll need medical attention once we've reached the Citadel, but this will get him there. Thank you. Give me a moment, and we can continue."
      (Madison Li's dialogue)
The Sole Survivor: "You're excited. What is it?"
Curie: "I am elated. Giddy. I begged to become a synth for a reason. For science. To be able to make real progress in studying the medical arts. I have had a breakthrough. Using a new strain of mutfruit, I have discovered a way to greatly improve the restorative properties of stimpaks. I realize this is not earthshaking, but it means that inspiration does exist."
The Sole Survivor: "How did you discover that?"
Curie: "Mutfruit has a particular sugar compound that stimulates platelet production and can close wounds. Unfortunately, the plant, when grown in the wild, is irradiated and develops natural toxins to ward off pests. Strain 17 has been genetically bred in sterile conditions to remove both problems. The new, pure sugar is already offering promise."
      (Curie's dialogue)

The universe is absolutely an alternate universe that branches off from our reality, mainly in the 1940s-60s. Quick side note, the Brotherhood full name Brotherhood of Steel are a very important faction and part of fallout, them being militaristic individuals who want to preserve pre war technology and destroy any mutated creatures after the bombs dropped. Also women are a thing in the brotherhood, as seen in pretty much all the games. Lastly squire and knights are ranks in the brotherhood, with squire meaning you tag along missions with higher ups, aka knights which allow members in the brotherhood to own a power armor suit which is why they focus on it a lot in diff shots. Also ghouls are pretty much immortal and can never die to age. Pretty funny to compare them to Deadpool tho lol

@@Alteori Yeah, problem is they butchered the Ghouls by making them wolverine regeneration monsters who need a serum to not go feral(in Fallout they are basically not very accepted because at any point their brain could deactivate completely till only the aggression center is active)... normally they regenerate slowly if they are close to radiation sources, but it has the sideffect of speeding up the transformation into a feral.
Also there are big continuity errors along the entire damn series, like the position of Shady Sands and the complete absence of the Boneyard and all the other settlements of the faction called NCR. The faction the showrunners nuked cause "they were proliferating too much and we wanted a reset".
The series is fun, the actors are good (not maximus), but people who care about the source material are critical of it for retconning stuff left and right and character assassinating House and Sinclair straight up(Mr. House was calculating for the drop of the bombs since 2066/65, he was not cooperating with Vault-Tec and was so nervous he wasn't able to keep eye contact... let alone get in a board meeting and mock other people. Vault-Tec is also retconned in this series to say "capitalism bad" despite their plan not making sense... why'd you nuke your investors and lose all the money you already have? there's literally no long term goal and no goal at all. In the originals, the Enclave(totalitarian untopia seekers) used Vault-Tec to develop space travel technology, with the Vaults being a way to see how humans would react to being in an enclosed space for a long period of time (cause humans would need to be into spaceships) and they failed cause the bombs dropped.

When Pompeii was originally found and was being excavated, they noticed these cavities that occasionally had bones in them...they realised that they were cavities left behind by people who had died and were buried under the vocanic ash, then their bodied decomposed and left behind a 'negative. So they filled the spaces with Plaster of Paris to bring to life the last moments of the inhabitants of Pompeii. There are some really sad and eerie scenes. By the end of the game, you’re rich, you’re wearing daedric armour, you know every spell, you have the best weapons, you’re a ninja-level thief/assasin, you know more spells than most wizards, you own houses all over the country, you have several servants, you’re the massiah of several cults etc. And between those two points, you have to earn all that.

13:19 So the metal syringe Lucy gets from the first aid and injects herself with after getting stabbed is an item from the game, it’s called a stimpack. In the games it’s an experimental drug that heals a portion of your health and somehow fixes all your broken bones, internal and external bleeding, and pretty much anything except radiation and poison. So the show is literally using video game logic. Which, yeah doesn’t make sense in reality, but for us who played the games it was fun seeing someone get mortally wounded, use a stimpack, and then just walk it off. It doesn't actually work that way in the series lore. Yes, it works that way in terms of game mechanics, but in-universe it just stimulates a persona's normal healing abilities and is generally intended for mild wounds. Hence why there have been more advanced variants developed (with Cure even specifically developing ones that improves its ability to close wounds), and why there are numerous instances in the games where just throwing stimpaks at something isn't enough to actually heal it (requiring medical expertise and equipment to heal broken limbs with skill checks, only being able to temporarily stabilize Garza's heart condition, Doc Mitchell still needing to stitch the player up after operating, etc, etc). Because while effective at mitigating injuries, they're still very much limited.
Until the show decided to retcon it because "Hey, don't you get this reference? Look at all these references we're making!" shenanigans, they were no more an actual magical heal-all products in-universe than doctor's bags or healing poultices. It would be like having a character in the show reload after only firing half a magazine, only for the bullets to magically reappear on their person because that's how it works in the gameplay of the franchise.

Well, I may be wrong on this, it's not that they didn't discover those things but that they discovered that technology later on than we did in our own timeline. And because of that it was a newer technology that was both not that widely available and not hardened to a nukes EMP. So, when the bombs fell all that tech was fired and what's left over after 200 years is 1950 retrofuture stuff.
One of the in-universe reasons for why the games use older music is because the newer music wasn't recorded on the more durable holotapes and such.

Cool thing about Fallout, it follows "Retro Futurism". Retro Futurism is a time period set way in the future, based on how a specific culture in the past thought it would look like. Fallout is the future as 1950' North America imagined it.
Well, as 1990's US thought 1950's North America imagined it.
And Fallout 3 is just the 1950's, but IN 2200's.

I'll leave a short lecture about Fallout universe, but stick to things relevant to the episode. (I'm not a hardcore fan so some things may be off.)
    1. Setting????
Fallout universe is set in an alternative retro-futuristic version of our world that branches off from our timeline (mainly) in 1945. The technology progresses quite fast but so does the usage of oil so the world is in crisis. USSR falls off and is replaced by China as the main bad guy in the cold war and at some point invades Alaska to take over local oil fields. They loose and the US takes the fight to mainland China. In response in 2077 everyone starts throwing nukes at each other and we get the current United States.
    2. Hole in Lucy's stomach and the injector
That was a Stimpack. One of Fallout's main healing items which contains a mix of things which names only someone with a PhD at medicine can read without biting off their tongue. Basically it boosts human body's healing process (which is an understatement) wile also having some pain numbing effects.
    3. Robots
There are robots in this universe but those dudes are wearing power armor which is basically a human sized tank.
    4. Do you play as multiple characters in fallout?
No. You have one character that you create yourself and you always start as someone new to the world (Except for Fallout New Vegas. The MC there just has a partial amnesia due to being shot in the head).
    5. Women in the Brotherhood?
Originally the Brotherhood consisted of soldiers that went AWOL after discovering some nasty stuff regarding their government. But since getting a boy as a kid is only decided by RNG gods they had to start recruiting people form outside their group, including women. The name most likely stayed out of tradition.
    6. Ghoul
It wasn't. His organs were though. For some reason. Ghouls are basically people that through a mix of good genes and radiation had mutated into something similar to zombies. But they are 100% sentient and relatively normal. The downside of this is that ghouls loose their skin as a result of radiation and they have a chance to turn feral. Majority of the ghouls in Fallout are 200+ years old.
    A question from me: Why is everyone mean to Max....? ; _ ;

I really wanted you to do this review. I had given up hope (I figured you saw the dog downed in the trailers and intsa-band it from your home). But you did it. Yessssssssssssssss! I loved your review, it was everything I hoped it would be. I was only able to see the first episode because I do not have Prime Video but luckily the first episode was on Freevee. Part of me hopes that the rest might get released just before season 2 launches but I know it is just wishful thinking.
One detail, The Ghoul's nose was not cut off, ghouls do not have noses. Also if you noticed some of the commenters describing ghouls as being zombie like but shows ghouls do not look like that. That's because their design was changed as the game series progressed. They originally looked like zombies and were described as rotting. In Fallout 4 they were redesigned to have more burned like appearance which is what the show's ghoul design is based off. The characteristics of the ghouls also changed as the game series progressed. In the 1st game a group of ghouls were worried about losing their water source. By Fallout 4 ghouls did not need to drink or eat. They were no longer just immune to radiation they were healed by it. Not needing to breath was established in Fallout 2. I like how the show's first episode confirmed the fan theory that balanced the discrepancies about ghouls biological needs. That radiation alone can tale care of all of a ghoul's biological needs. It was sometimes a highly heated debate amongst some Fallout fans.
Lastly, if you ever decide to play Fallout 4 you will need a couple of mods to help you enjoy the game. One of them replaces hostile dogs with something else, I don't remember what. The other lets you change your character into a humanoid fox.

Quick explanation bout the begining (cause I'm a Fallout nerd and I gotta explain this sorta thing, lol). the Fallout franchise takes place in a split timeline that broke off from our own around the cold war era. TLDR; technology advanced, but the 50's culture and fear of communisim stayed the same. The only thing that seemed to have died out like in our own timeline is the hardcore racism of that era.
2nd explanation: (I can't stop, help). The Brotherhood of Steel are...best way I can describe them is a military cult. They were founded by a group of us soldiers who survived the war, and for the past 200+ years they've made it there mission to preserve as much pre-war technology as possible, and to help the wasteland recover from the bombs. As for the "robot dudes" that's power armor, it's kinda like a mini mech suit. And for the BoS, becoming a Knight and getting your own suit is indeed a huge deal.
and FINALLY; the Ghoul. I won't go into any spoiler territory, just what's explained in the games. Basically "ghoul" isn't just what he specifically is called, it's his whole species, of sorts. Ghouls in the Fallout series are people who were exposed to radiation and went through a specific mutation, their skin get's all mangled as seen in the show, and for some, their limbs and body parts can start falling off due to necrosis (they also become sterile, duh). However on the upside, radiation no longer hurts them, they don't age, and they can survive for an extremely long time with very little food or water.

Was it hardcore? It was the beginning of the civil rights movement and only gained steamed going forward. That would not happen if "hardcore racism" was the norm among the largest population group. It would have been squashed. There was resistance for sure, there always is. But there was also support and our country changed. Some for the better and some not so much (I hope Lyndon Johnson is enjoying his pineapple enemas in hell).

13:00 I actually really like that they set up that Lucy has had- training in fighting, fencing, and guns- She knows the basics, but she's never had to use them in a life or death scenario. So when it comes time to finally protect herself, she isn't fully capable of defending herself, but again, it was set up that she CAN protect herself!
That's the actual intelligent writing that made me fall in love with Fallout. Even if Episodes 2 and 3 drag a bit (can't say much on ep 4 because I have yet to watch it.)
Edit: Also Stem-packs, the injection thingies aren't a instant wound healer like in the video games. They're more like an antiseptec, an Antifibrinolytic, and a numbing agent all in one. So in Ep 2 she still has to staple the wound treath, and staple the wound closed before wrapping it up.

The whole stab wound minor inconvenience thing is cause she used the stimpak from the first aid pack, the big shot that she used, in the universe its like antibiotics, liquid bandaid, aloe vera, whiskey, and cocaine... on crack, so it doesn't immediately "heal" the problem, but it god damn well near fixes the situation. She is probably still bleeding a bit, but it probably mostly closed up the wound and slowed her blood in that area or something, we don't exactly know how it works, but it can heal broken limbs to an extent too so.

If you are completely new here to Fallout and want to enter the games they have a great very rich lore but here is something to clear up a very big and common confusions that plagues the franchise as a wholes especially for a newcomer. By extension all the other weird quirks and contradictions in this franchise. When you get a fictional world as old as Fallout with different writers coming in and out of it, and especially when it crosses mediums, things get messy of course. This has been a huge mess since every thing after Fallout 2, retcons, inconsistency are to be expected, a lot. LIKE A LOT.
There was a post-apocalyptic game about desert rangers called Wasteland back in 1988 inspired by things like Dune and Mad Max (this is where the dog came from) for the Apple II and DOS computers. The publisher EA dropped the already in development sequel abruptly. The studio team creating the game decided to make a spiritual successor to the game with another publisher.
The first Fallout was created back in 1997 by the former Wasteland devs in a studio called Black Isle under the ownership of a new publisher Interplay Entertainment. After its success they made a Fallout 2, but Interplay Entertainment was mess of a publisher who frequently got into many lawsuits started to bleed money from bad financial decisions a real life corporate comedy/horror story. Interplay Entertainment made two other fallout games later without the Black Isle team that were received poorly while Black Isle were in development of their own Fallout 3. In a desperate attempt to save the company's finances without the knowledge of Black Isle, Interplay Entertainment sold the rights of Fallout to Bethesda Entertainment in 2003. Their Black Isle Fallout 3 was canceled and laid off the team at Black Isle, their Fallout 3 was retroactively renamed Fallout Van Buren later on. Bethesda Entertainment went straight into development of a whole new Fallout 3. The former members of Black Isle regrouped as a whole new studio Obsidian Entertainment. After Bethesda's Fallout 3 (2008) became game of the year, people wanted a Fallout 4 but Bethesda were developing the Elder Scrolls V so they contracted Obsidian Entertainment to make a spin off title under a short time of 2 years to make a whole installment which became Fallout New Vegas (2010). Everything after that is Bethesda Entertainment's work, Fallout 4, Fallout Shelter, Fallout 76, and this show partnered with Amazon and MGM.
Most of the fallout community goes with this separation, this is also the core of biggest divide in the fallout community and story.
West Coast Fallout. Made by the original of Fallout team of Black Isle Studios then later Obsidian Entertainment.
-Fallout 1 (1997) Took place in Southern California
-Fallout 2 (1998) Took place in Northern California
-Fallout New Vegas (2010) took place in the Las Vegas area
East Coast Fallout. Made by Bethesda Entertainment.
-Fallout 3 (2008) The DC Area (The one most where most people got introduced to fallout)
-Fallout 4 (2015) The Boston Area
-Fallout Shelter (2015) In its own world.
-Fallout 76 (2018) The West Virginia Area.
The Interplay Entertainment spin offs were declared not cannon anymore because they were awful, nobody cares about these anymore.
-Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (2001) Most people call it just Fallout Tactics to not confuse with the next one. Not actually that bad though.
-Fallout Brotherhood of Steel (2004) Only ever released on the PS2 (for a PC exclusive franchise for some reason) hands down the worst thing in the fallout franchise by far. Don't play this game unless you want make a review video. Technically the first multiplayer Fallout with split screen but don't torture your friends to play this dumpster. Half the game design was stolen and they got a lawsuit for it which was one of the reasons how Bethesda Entertainment got the Fallout IP in the first place. Interplay later also tried to sell Bethesda's Fallout 3 as their own which led to a whole other lawsuit.
These two Fallouts are completely different in narrative and portrayal of the fallout world.
For example East Coast Bethesda's Fallout heavily focus on the Brotherhood of Steel being the good guys and Vault Tec. Mutants in Bethesda fallout are mostly unintelligent, when they portray the Pre War World its mostly a retro future happy America. The wasteland was more of your typical post apocalypse and factions in the wasteland never developed people are still mostly scavengers, raiders, and small scale groups living using prewar leftovers. They never really ever rebuilt society ever for whatever reason after 300 years. Nuka Cola big deal. More focus on Good vs Evil with a very fun action like tone. (This is mostly the image of most people when they think "Fallout")
The Black Isle and Obsidian West Coast Fallouts focused more on New California Republic as it grew out of an anarchic wasteland to an organized macronation controlling most of former California, a lot of Mutants are actually more intelligent than their former human counterparts. The Brotherhood of steel was just a well equipped and educated cult, Vault Tec was nothing more than just a puppet corporation for the US Government (outside the vaults you never heard much about them at all) Pre War world was a lot more a horror story of geopolitics, overpopulation, national alliances breaking down, wars being started all over the depleting resources, the US government basically became a dictatorship invading Canada. The wasteland most more sorted by small and larger communities connected by trade routes fighting over thing like water and sources of energy to control a region, more focused on the new societies being developed and fighting over each other as they all grew. Raiders and gangs were more factionalized and mutated wildlife would be more territorial. They did not rely as much pre war stuff as wastelanders mostly farmers just trying to have food. Nuka Cola is not much of a big deal. A lot more blurry line of good and evil with a more depressing bleak tone.
To clarify most of what you probably know of Fallout is Bethesda's East Coast Fallout most people never played the first two Fallouts because they are old 2D isometric turn based role playing games that more for the "deep nerd" crowd back in the 1990s when you practically had to be an expert just to use a computer and its very much for people that already played a ton other isometric games. The older fallouts is heavily told in large amounts of text to read with only a handful of voice acting "every character had a screenplay's worth of dialogue to read", the gameplay demands strategy, you have to conserve items, and difficulty is very unforgiving and almost no player guide, no waypoints even for major quest items, or handholding, even on easy some fights you will be forced to retreat or avoid. A lot did not age very well after for Fallout 1&2 such as you were very much expected to read the game's manual to understand how to play back when games had manuals.
Bethesda after they bought the IP made fallout into 3D open world game, player would easily have a ton of lot and win against almost anything they came across even on hard. Tons of marketing and in game/real life merchandising, the games were easy to learn and access you don't really need to think that hard about going into a fight or a story quest.
A lot of classic fallout fans do not like the way Bethesda dumbed down the writing and gameplay. Yeah a lot of them are purists but they do have a genuine point there is a lot of questionable things regarding the general quality of the Bethesda Fallout comparatively especially everything regarding Fallout 76. Most of what you know of Fallout was created by them before Bethesda.
Both a great on their own in their own ways. Just keep in mind if you see this as all as one story it gets very confusing.
Fallout New Vegas tried to blend the two which is why most consider it the best fallout ever.
When talking about this show however, it takes place in California but it is heavily the East Coast style of Fallout, Brotherhood main power, Vault Tec big, 1950s Pre war parties, etc.
Bethesda says this show cannon but it doesn't really matter because this show mostly doing its own thing anyways there really isn't much outside of common world knowledge like lore aspects. There are no story beats or connections with any of the plotlines, events or characters in the rest of the world. There isn't really anything to get spoiled from long fans of the games.
However though, despite taking place in California the only location from the games is Shady Sands the capital of the New California Republic, which somehow was destroyed off screen, the rest New California Republic is shockingly absent for how much of massive deal they were in the lore even if somehow they completely disappeared only in a decade after New Vegas where this show takes place. They literally controlled most of California and developed to the point of being an actual country with taxes, manufacturing, research and development, healthcare, housing development, education, infrastructure, and a massive properly equipped army that drove the brotherhood out of the whole region. They were the closest thing you could get to pre war lifestyle in Fallout. This is like nobody remembered the Roman Empire after it fell, this has created a lot of arguments between fans. Strangely though the only actual character from the games that take place in the show is Robert House (Major Character and a fan favorite from the West Coast Fallout New Vegas) for some brief scenes.
I'm just happy this video game adaptation isn't a dumpster fire.

Lucy uses a stimpack on her wound which is basically a medical marvel in a small injection halting bleeding and helping close wounds within a matter of seconds so wounds like that one she revieced from the raider can be partially healed quite quickly thanks to the stimpack making it less of an inconvenience, though after the war ofc stimpacks are now quite a rarity as no one is making them anymore

It’s no point thinking about the personal bunker thing, no one really survived in a personal bunker, well except House.

The flashback timeline a fictional alternate universe in which nuclear energy tech caught on rather than technology using modern transisters. It’s why even though they are in year 2077, they have the early 50’s estetic. Actually more things happened but that’s the reason for the tech

I remember being in the 5th grade and learning about the Cold War in school, and they actually told us to hold up our thumbs if we see a nuke and compare our thumbs to the cloud, just like in the show.

In the games, you would play a character LIKE Lucy. A Vault Dweller who goes to the surface for one reason or another. You can be good or bad, and there are factions you can join (like the Brotherhood of Steel, or the Enclave). Factions give you different sets of side quests, the same as a main character like The Ghoul might require you to help them so theyll help you. Thats why there are multiple storylines.

While Terminator 2 is my all-time favourite depiction of a nuclear bomb drop in media, the opening to this episode is still pretty haunting 😨

    So, heres the lore info:
Fallout takes place in an alternative universe to our own where Nuclear-powered everything took place and while the style retained esthetics from the 50'/60's, the tech is more advanced than ours, all of it, medical and technological.
In the show you follow different characters that represent different possible runs you can do in the games.
    - Lucy - Normal neutral/good hearted first run of a Vault Dweller for a first time player that finds out just how much of a sh*thole the commonwealth is the hard way (Also side fact, the actress for Lucy is the voice actor for Jinx in Arcane)
    - Maximus - Faction based run for a second player with a few questionable choices that you later regret that as better knowledge of the commonwealth but doesnt fully know everything (also, you will turn around with Maximus)
    - The Ghoul - Seasoned player that simply doesnt give a damn and will just do anything to pull the trigger or do something interesting in side quests while following the main storyline knowing how every mutant works and maybe how they came to be (aka. Knowing the lore)
    - Mystery - [Access Denied]
The game only follows your character since its a RPG (Role-Playing Game) that you can do multiple different runs that end with multiple different endings. Also dont worry, no good doggo dies in the Fallout show, thats about the only spoiler ill give.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the show will show how different the mindset of each character has through their stories and with each other.
The shows will delve into a lot of Lore that until now only viewed as theory now deemed canon, since the show is Canon to the games. There's also many references to the games and the behaviors of the characters.
Also know that the ahow is taking things from ths following games:
    - Fallout 1
    - Fallout 2
    - Fallout 3
    - Fallout New Vegas
    - Fallout 4
    - Fallout 76 (something good out of it i guess)

Elder Cleric Quintus is played by Michael Cristofer. He's been in a few things but you probably recognise him most from his role in Mr. Robot as Phillip Price

Fallout is alternate history. In the Fallout universe, after World War 2, scientists made advanced technology with nuclear energy. The setting before the war is a homage to 1950's science fiction. In the Fallout universe, the year is 2077 when the nuclear bombs fall, causing people to rush into the vaults to avoid dying to the nuclear apocalypse. Those that couldn't get into the vaults either died or became ghouls.
