    tip: if you not sailing in wide open waters then if the wind drops and you decide to use the motor you should first point the yacht into what's left of the wind and drop the sails. As you do not want to approaching your docking area with sails raised unless you really really comfortable sailing solo. If you keep sails up in tight water ways and the wind lifts just a little you could get into a problem. You did very well in those light conditions - even a small yacht can be problematic tacking in such light airs. By the way you compainion doorway is not doing to keep you boat dry in heavy weather. Try refitting a proper side-in hatch closure. Another tip: if possible try and swop out the pull-cord starter outboard engine for a push button electric starter - you will have yourself lots of cuts and bruises, sore shoulders. Happy sailing Ann-Elin 😊

    My tiller tends to fall away when tacking as I see yours does.This tends to spoil the tack,so I use a clip-on bungee across the cockpit with twin prusik loops to centre the tiller.The tiller will then return to centre as you complete the turn and you can concentrate on the sheets.Happy sailing.Looks a nice spot.

    Great Ann-Elin. Well done for the first time. Work a bit on sail trim. More tight to the upside while rigging. And the front sail on the water especially at 3-6 kts of wind a bit less tight. Then you are good... Greetings from Kiel/Germany, the home of sailing...

    • @leecowell8165
      @leecowell8165 3 месяца назад

      She didn't take her eyeballs off those sails for very long though. Remember also that she's sailing in light and variable a lot harder to stay trimmed also in protected waters rather than out in the wild blue. Finally remember that the boat ain't gonna have a lotta WAY in these kinda conditions so it takes mr boat longer to come about because you ain't gonna be powering through tacks. result is a lotta wallowing about. She did great. This boat may also sport a full keel which means it ain't gonna sport lively performance in real light winds. Remember that Sam only sails full keeled boats and I'm certain he influenced her on procuring this boat. He knows what's best for her and I for one would be trusting his judgement.

I am much the same sailing solo, but my confidence is getting stronger, as your video helped 😊. One thing that might help is to have a tiller clutch/tiller tamer so you have your tiller fixed amidships (to help stay on course) when you need to adjust sail, start the outboard, lower sail.

    This video kinda reminded me about my first solo sailing experiences. Trying to tack I got hit with the boom in head and ended up with unintentional heave to, because genoa sheet tangled around front hatch, and I was pushing rudder with a feet not enough. Day after I got hit with boom to the other side of my head, everything in head went to places and I understood a lot of what I was doing wrong. During that 2 day trip I also barely avoided fishing nets, got in the sand, escaped from the sand, but my confidence in sailing lifted up enormously. It is crazy, how fast you can learn, when no one is around to help you. Cheers from Lithuania, and happy sailing!

    The doors look great, Ann. . Look forward for more solo sailing from you in your nice boat there. You even got that engine started.. good girl! I'm certain Sam will be looking this over! What a beautiful place to learn. Wear your jacket. I know the wind is light but its better to have good habits you don't need a clip as this is protected waters and as you mentioned the water is warm AND you know how to swim. Just the same its just a good idea to form good habits and especially when you're out there on your own. Yep I guarantee that old Fathers like myself are thinking along the same lines we've seen way too much water flow under the bridge, Ann.

    I had to learn this too, but there is a lot of room on the water, and often when i calm myself down, fix the rudder so i don't steer to shore, then calmly (trying at least) get my tools and start troubleshooting the engine. It is the "what if" that makes me stress out, and i need to tell my self that "what ifs" don't happen if i remain calm.

    Came back for a second look and this wind is so light I'm surprised that a full keeled boat carried you through from the starboard to port tack. but you executed it just fine. Its actually a LOT tougher to tack in light winds than heavy because you can't gather very much way. I was watching the clouds rotate around though on that tack and you made it through. Was anyone back at dockside to assist you to tie off?
    I remember many years ago when I was learning I had an old sea captain teaching me to judge way to pick up a mooring in that same area just South of the A1A bridge. This guy HATED to use an engine... hated it. This was on the East coast of Florida in Ft Pierce. Yep Sam knows the area he has a video of him sailing a Hobie 16 there. I did the same but it was a few years before his time. Those are tricky to sail as I pitch poled mine more than once. NOT fun! I think the Dolphins thought it was funny they'd come right up to you to check you out.

    The way you can tell if the sails are set properly is to let them out until the front of the sail (nearest the fore stay in the case of the jib) begins to luff. Then pull it in gradually until it stops luffing. Stop at that point.

    Because I'm not there I can't really tell, but it seems you are pushing your tiller to far when tacking causing a braking effect and not allowing water to flow over the rudder correctly. It is great your doing sailing on your own. Using the jib to help turning by not pulling it over too early is good to do also.
