Fixing engine problems and going for a sail!
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.Месяц назад
There is always something with these boats! Last week Sam was visiting and we were going for a sail, but then the gear on the outboard was stuck so we had to sort that out before getting anywhere. The engine ended up being even better than before though, so I guess it was a good thing after all! And then we found a new island that we claimed, which is now Egon Island. Expensive but ordinary.

Ann, Sam... hey I just read about an elderly couple sailing the North Atlantic atta Nova Scotia to the Azores. They never made it. Found deceased on their inflated life raft on an island a few days after leaving port. They probably died from dehydration is my guess. They stupidly removed their diesel engine and installed an electric one... powered by lithium batteries. I think they lost that boat via a lithium battery fire (the boat was never found). NOTHING is worse than a fire onboard in the middle of a big ocean! So please, PLEASE NEVER replace lead-acid with lithium! Once those fires start they create their own O2 and you can NOT extinguish them!

Just reading some of your comments here, Ann. NOW I know why you spend time in Norway! You sound like you have an American dialect BUT English isn't even your first language.. wow! So you gotta know of Sissel. She is by far my favorite female singer. When she speaks (and she sings in 15 languages!) in English she sounds like she was born in West Palm Beach and so do you! She does NOT have a British dialect and neither do you. I could never learn a 2nd language I've tried. Norway is a beautiful country but only about 10 million people live there. Too cold and with a very short summer. Wish I could have visited there one day but time has passed me buy. You live in Sardinia? Wow if you do THAT is a long way from Norway and especially so by water but DIRECTLY North on the E10 meridian. Interesting, Ann.

I suggest getting involved in the local racing scene. There's almost always boats who could use crew, even if you're a beginner. You'll learn heaps about sailing that way, and meet fun like minded folks.

  • @leecowell8165

Came back for a second look and this wind is so light I'm surprised that a full keeled boat carried you through from the starboard to port tack. but you executed it just fine. Its actually a LOT tougher to tack in light winds than heavy because you can't gather very much way. I was watching the clouds rotate around though on that tack and you made it through. Was anyone back at dockside to assist you to tie off? I remember many years ago when I was learning I had an old sea captain teaching me to judge way to pick up a mooring in that same area just South of the A1A bridge. This guy HATED to use an engine... hated it. This was on the East coast of Florida in Ft Pierce. Yep Sam knows the area he has a video of him sailing a Hobie 16 there. I did the same but it was a few years before his time. Those are tricky to sail as I pitch poled mine more than once. NOT fun! I think the Dolphins thought it was funny they'd come right up to you to check you out.

Just too cute... and classy, Ann. Visiting the Med with Sam but now begining to learn to sail your own as well. I keep thinking the Cagliari area as your home range but could be wrong. What a beautiful city though and Google Earth has it well covered even at street level. The entire area has beautiful places with a rich history wish I had been born there (or the Far East) but of course we have absolutely NO say as to where or even when we are born. We only have choices AFTERWARDS.

This video kinda reminded me about my first solo sailing experiences. Trying to tack I got hit with the boom in head and ended up with unintentional heave to, because genoa sheet tangled around front hatch, and I was pushing rudder with a feet not enough. Day after I got hit with boom to the other side of my head, everything in head went to places and I understood a lot of what I was doing wrong. During that 2 day trip I also barely avoided fishing nets, got in the sand, escaped from the sand, but my confidence in sailing lifted up enormously. It is crazy, how fast you can learn, when no one is around to help you. Cheers from Lithuania, and happy sailing!

My tiller tends to fall away when tacking as I see yours does. This tends to spoil the tack,so I use a clip-on bungee across the cockpit with twin prusik loops to centre the tiller. The tiller will then return to centre as you complete the turn and you can concentrate on the sheets.Happy sailing.Looks a nice spot.

Congratulations Ann-Elin. Looks great to me, and enjoying sailing vicariously with you. I’m sure you had a fun afternoon on the water. I am much the same sailing solo, but my confidence is getting stronger, as your video helped 😊. One thing that might help is to have a tiller clutch/tiller tamer so you have your tiller fixed amidships (to help stay on course) when you need to adjust sail, start the outboard, lower sail.

The doors look great, Ann. . Look forward for more solo sailing from you in your nice boat there. You even got that engine started.. good girl! I'm certain Sam will be looking this over! What a beautiful place to learn. Wear your jacket. I know the wind is light but its better to have good habits you don't need a clip as this is protected waters and as you mentioned the water is warm AND you know how to swim. Just the same its just a good idea to form good habits and especially when you're out there on your own. Yep I guarantee that old Fathers like myself are thinking along the same lines we've seen way too much water flow under the bridge, Ann.
