Fits well with Voyager's main plot for its crew to find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant, while upholding Federation values along the way (e.g., making first contacts with species who might be hostile to you, resolving conflicts while avoiding the use of violence, etc).
LGranthamsHeir yes. It has a lot in common with the other themes: a adventurous theme, but with a slow, cautious, melody as they head through unknown space to get themselves home.
Easily one of the best Star Trek theme songs. Personally, Janeway was a great captain and the cast of the show was very good. For all of its faults, Voyager is still one of my favorite Star Trek series for the things it did right.
@@victoriatoner5082 I still watch. I used to think Star Trek the Next Generation was the absolute best, then gradually Voyager became more and more appealing. I still watch. I've seen others write that Voyager has lots of faults. I have a hard time finding them? I can get lost watching this series like I never did with any of the previous Star Trek shows. I've watched the whole series now commercial-free on Amazon, and do feel the way it ended seemed too abrupt, and to have Reginald Barclay waiting to receive Voyager did seem a bit weak. Glad you like it as much as I have.
I dislike when people compare Picards methods and Janeways methods cause they are both in totally different scenarios. Janeway was 100% a badass and great captain but so was Picard for totally different reasons.
@@juana1483 I agree with this. I think people think back on Next Generation with rose-tinted glasses. While it did have some fantastic episodes, it also had lots and lots of stinkers. In my opinion the average Voyager episode was consistently stronger than the average Next Generation episode. Voyager was also more character-focused, and relied far less on technobabble deus-ex-machina solutions to every problem. In Year of Hell, Captain Janeway inadvertently solves their problem by sacrificing her own life. Star Trek at its best. My biggest knock on Voyager was that they were too afraid to show characters with any faults even though that was ripe for exploration (Maqui-Federation tension, Tom Paris being a renegade, Torres being a hot-head). Any time a character misbehaved it was quickly forgotten by the end of the episode. Lastly, Voyager also managed to show a strong female lead without needing to resort to having every male character being either a) a submissive eunuch, b) evil or c) an incompetent boob, like every modern show does these days.
By far the best theme. Simple, grand and melodic. Just a very emotionally powerful piece of music that makes you think of exploration. It would have been a great theme for an epic western series of people finding new frontiers.
I'm watching the series on Netflix & I'm obsessed with this theme. People don't appreciate an Orchestra & how epic it is to get 100 musician together to play something. As someone involved with electronic music & folk jams, I'm just now becoming aware of this. How stalwart do those horn players have to be to play this powerful theme! Also, I play fiddle, and mine doesn't sound like these violins! So now I'm learning to play the theme on my synths...an epic experience!!
It's especially nice considering the absolute dated cheese of the show that came after. I still can't get over that we got the epic Next Gen theme, the DS9 and Voyager themes which are both soothing and majestic.... And then Enterprise gave us a "90s sitcom opening" pop rock opening. What a downgrade.
My thoughts exactly. TOS is the cult classic; TNG is human nature, DS9 is intricacies of war. Voyager should've embraced isolation, loneliness, and solidarity, but spent way too much time trying to be TNG.
Voyager was so great, I loved the episodes like where Harry Kim finds himself back on earth, or when Harry and Tom Paris are in that prison with the torture devices! The ones that show suffering like that prison one are my favourites because they make you appreciate things more
My dad arranged this piece for his band (that I'm in) and we're playing it this year :) This is easily my favorite Star Trek theme. It's a close call between Voyager and DS9 (S1-3)
Psionic Phazon The only good thing that came from Enterprise was one of my favorite alien species, the Elachi. Y'know, the silent, mushroom-headed aliens that just turn off all the ship's power and then abduct the crew?
I agree. Its just a masterpiece in every way. The composition, the mixdown, etc. If you are an audiophile or work in the recording industry, u really geek out on stuff like this. Ill bet this song took a bit of time and alot of money to make back in the days of analog recording. It was alot harder back then.
Written by none other than the master Jerry Goldsmith, who was also responsible for the The Motion Picture theme which was adapted for TNG. I also would have loved to hear an extended version of this, but the theme accomplishes so much in such a short time... I love it. :)
Been looking for this song for so so many years, since I was about 7-8 years old this song had been stuck in my head and couldn't remember where I heard it from. Now I'm 26 years old and finally found it.
I still remember this being the first Star Trek I ever watched. I was sick from work and watching daytime TV in my bed. I was half asleep, with the TV on, and I woke up to this music. It was the episode where Seven of Nine was still Borg, but her sphere crash landed on a planet, and several other Borg survived, severed from the collective. Later in the episode the doctor manages to disconnect the other two Borg from hearing each others thoughts. After this episode, I watched every episode of Voyager, and enjoyed most of them. Apart from the episodes with the Kazon... They are boring as heck lol.
I don't know if this is the best Star Trek theme but I can say that for me it's the most beautiful because the emotions it stirs in me can be summed up in a few words: "Life can get better, the journey is worth the struggle, the future is bright indeed."

This is the melody of the alarm clock on my mobile phones for over 10 years. When one morning a friend of mine heard my alarm sound, he said he had never heard a nicer melody for awakening. You do not have the need to turn it of, you can continue to sleep if you want. (He never watched Star Trek.)
People can say what they want about Voyager, but the theme music is absolutely incredible. It absolutely captures the feeling of a lost ship and crew just trying to get home. What a beautifully uplifting piece of music. Especially the final section, from 1:19 onward. DS9 still has my favourite theme but Voyager is an easy second.
Voyager was my favorite as a kid (age 10-16) and as such, my feelings toward it are still very raw and deep. I will get much more emotionally invested in rewatches than I do for TNG (which I didn't really see very much of until I was in my 20s). I'm not only reliving moments of the show, but memories from my childhood.
I got those feelings when the first episode aired, and I still get them now. The sign of a good theme tune is if it still has he same effect on a person regardless of how many times they have heard it.
This could easily have been the theme to a western series from the 60s and 70s. The music give me a sense of exploration and new frontiers. Grand, simple and romantic. Beautiful.
When this was near release (January 1995), I was delighted to hear that the Master, Jerry Goldsmith, had been chosen to create its title music. He did *not* disappoint. He's much missed, now.
"Maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey" I remember this quote most of all from the show and it has helped me through so much. On this sad day for all Star Trek fans, I now point that quote towards Mr Leonard Nimoy. He lived a long and prosperous life (pun intended, sorry guys). He had an amazing career through which he made many friends, some of which I saw as his family. His friends weren't just those he made on the set, it was also the millions of fans he shook hands with, hugged and had pictures taken with. The hearts of those people were touched by this amazing kind man. I'm actually saddened that I'll never get to meet him. He was loved by millions of people and he will surely be missed. Let's not forget the journey that he took us on.
His character is just as memorable if not more popular than darth vader. Im a star wars fan but have much respect for the trekies. May the force be with nimoys spirit.
Such a beautiful composition. I love the clarinets staccatos and metals used in a way that is reminiscent of stars twinkling in the skies. With a strong up front horn, symbolic of the bravery of the crew. All in a beautiful bed of violins, which provide the awe and wonder of exploring space. The drums beating away, reminding us that there's danger out there. Can't have had a more perfect intro theme than this one.
I’ve never been into Star Trek but my mother has always been a big fan. I remember it being on tv in the background as a kid and this theme in particular stood out for me. What an amazing piece of music this is!
Memories of watching Star Trek with my mum when I was little. We used to watch them on BBC Two. Both The Next Generation and Voyager were my favourite incarnations of Star Trek.
this is the best Star Trek "Intro" ever-It's not up for discussion. Nothing in the Star Trek Universe-"Musically"-comes close to any comparison. God I love this theme!!!!!!
the one star trek theme that really gets me... I discovered I had somehow skipped a Voyager episode, so I decided to rewatch it, and I realized how much I must have missed the show because I began crying way too hard for a grown man when the intro played
I'm 28 years old right now, and I remember laying in bed as a kid and listening to my dad watch this just about every night. It really helped put me to sleep. And since it came on at about 10 pm, it was a sign for bedtime
Easily the best Star Trek to date, the only one I enjoyed and can watch through fully. I, like most people, am not a trekkie or anything by any definition, but enjoy aspects of Star Trek and as I previously said, Voyager is the perfect example of Star Trek and what it is about - hope, friendship, adventure and a trek through the stars.
There's just something so majestic and graceful about this theme as well as the intro. The integrity behind it. Being stranded 70,000 light years away from home, no support, having to adapt, only a few of your organization.
I watched this a lot back in High School and in College and it gave me an escape from the crap of reality and allowed me to dream about a better and brighter future for Humanity. I hope that the world of Star Trek comes to pass someday.
Jerry Goldsmith's Voyager theme is greatly influenced by Mahler's 2nd Symphony, premiered in 1895. It contains many quotations and themes from this work and both are influenced by the works of Anton Bruckner. The orchestration is in the style of Mahler. You may have been struck by the majestic, stately, hymnal and solemn quality of the Voyager theme. A Gothic cathedral of sound. The Second Symphony describes the life, death and resurrection of a hero. It is known as the Resurrection Symphony and contains a funeral tribute piece (Totenfeier) at the beginning, a song, Urlicht, by a contralto and a solemn, choral finale. The same timpani theme in the Mahler sympnony commences the Voyager theme. The melancholy emotions in this theme are shared with Gustav Mahler. If you like this theme, then you are a Mahlerian, even if you did know of Mahler. Mahler 2 is like a giant sized Voyager theme with the Harry Potter and Batman 1989 themes mixed in. They are also influenced by this mighty work. Please treat yourself to the super-sized original. Bruckner's Te Deum was respected by Mahler and is also essential listening for the Voyager theme connoisseur. John Williams was also influenced by Mahler in his original Star Wars soundtrack.
I never thought it sounded like Mahler's 2nd. It has a very modernistic sound with a cathedral style. Mahler's 2nd is like an art movie, while Voyager is a lamenting fanfare. Those styles you mentioned where it both sounds cathedral, I completely agree with that aspect. Fanfares to me are something cathedral, grand but also closed in, not grand to the great Rolling hills, not wide and large, but tall and big. That's the sound I imagine this theme and Mahler's greatest early work be. But we both can agree, Mahler's 2nd is pureness and one of the greatest pieces of music ever made by man.
The beginning of the first movement of Mahler's 9th always reminds me of a Star Trek theme. Mahler's 2nd is one of my favorite symphonies, too. I think his 5th is his best though. They're all great though. Powerful composer.
I will listen to Mahler and judge. For me, similarity of sound does not count. Only the melodic line counts. Some time ago I read that Jerry was inspired by Bela Bartok in the track from Alien when Dallas enters the ventilation ducts (music from Freud). In fact, you can hear similar sounds, but as I wrote above, they are not important. The melody line is important, and Jerry created an original and genius one. At least when it comes to the track from Alien, because I'll still listen to that Mahler. It's good that people like you Mr write about inspiration and not plagiarism. With Christ.
Yeh there was like 3 on around the same time . I think next generation had finished but still played reruns all the time. Then deep space nine and voyager. Although I didn't watch it much unless forced my dad did. So the theme tunes are like nostalgia 😆
Star Trek, a future where humans don't kill each other over their differences, but cooperate because of their similarities and advance the human race as a whole. Where they strive for peace among each other and other species. Too bad so many haven’t realized we can go farther together
I like to think that no matter how much I dislike a Voyager episode, the first couple minutes put me in a glorious mood. Ugh the general premise of the show was so great too.
Since i started watchin Star Trek a couple years ago, i ignored the new movies, i loved TNG, i liked tos, i liked enterprise (yes, i said it's name, deal with it) and i just started watching voyager, and boy am i in love with Star Trek!
i just got into Voyager recently. When it originally aired I was in University and didn't have much time for programmed TV. Although the first few seasons were a little weak(Paris/Janeway amphibious offspring anyone), it's been a whole new show since 7of 9 came on board. The stories are so much better now! I'm currently on season 5 and can't wait to see how it ends!
In this past year alone, starting in April, I've been through TOS, 1 episode of TAS, TNG, DS9 (just finished it this morning), and I am already on S1E5 of Voyager. My favorite character right now has to be Neelix.
The 1st 54s sounds like a funeral theme an appropriate theme for a noble soul to depart from his corporeal being and ascend into what people consider the heavenily paradise. For example the Trumpets are playing loudly inviting the soul into paradise. Because even if in life we were not considered royalty. An invitation to Heaven makes all souls feel welcomed & appreciated like royalty. And this theme gives me that impression. All I could visualize was my father's soul ascending to Heaven greeted by a theme like this.
I never saw the appeal for Star Trek at the time when I was young, as whenever I scrolled through channels and see it on, it just looked confusing to understand. Then there was a few nights were I was too lazy to get up from bed to change the channel after the 10pm news, and Star Trek Voyager would come on, and I would just leave it there lol. Then I became absolute enamored by this great show and realized what I was missing. I would look forward every night to hear this wonderful theme and watch this wonderful show and has become one of my favorite shows ever. Kudos to Jerry Goldsmith for giving us this wonderful theme.
I loved this theme as a kid. My favourite Star Trek is still DS9 but Voyager had its charms. I was annoyed when Seven of Nine and the Doctor basically ended up stealing the show. I liked the earlier seasons. But I love some characters a lot, like Janeway. Re-watching Voyager makes me forget that the series started airing in the mid 90s. It does not look like a 90s show. It still holds up today, really. Then again so does TNG and that aired in the friggin 80s. These were really well-filmed shows. As a kid I had a childish habit of singing this song to the lyrics of "Lick my balls". It just seemed to fit so perfectly. Yeah I was an idiot.
Just a beautiful piece of music. Makes me sad that we'll never get another Star Trek TV Show the likes of TNG, DS9, or Voyager. Any new series will surely hinge upon some through-line story with never-ending cliffhangers like every other show on TV. Is it so bad to want a classic Star Trek monster-of-the-week format? Every episode was a succinct and often inspiring story about humanity and the things we have to improve in ourselves to reach a better future. The recent films, as exciting and visually impressive as they are, tell us nothing of value except that lens flares and explosions are cool.
I entered Star Trek Fandom with Voyager, after years of changing the channel whenever seeing Enterprise. I have watched them all now - and THIS IS THE BEST! It boldy goes where no theme has gone before!
This theme was incredible during a road trip to Colorado. Played the very moment we approached the canyon into Manitou Springs that led into Woodland Park. Definitely worthy to be played during an adventure.
At first I personally thought that TNG was the best... until I watched Voyager... When I watched the last episode of voyager, I was so upset! No more adventures by the voyager crew :(
It's hard to tell what's controversial to you or in terms of your own opinions, but opinions is just what it comes down to in these matters. It sure would seem controversial to other people, if you had stated opposites along the same line, saying that you liked and didn't like something (e.g. Star Trek) at the same time, without adding a reasonable explanation (opinion), separating different aspects of the object at hand. (Like, maybe you enjoyed most of the characters of Voyager and the morale aspects, but not so much some of the alien races and individual decisions.) I see no way liking Voyager could be controversial to, say, liking TNG or Farscape, same as one can like tea as well as prunes and tomato soup, though probably not at the very same time. So, no, I don't think it's controversial by itself, to just like ST Voyager.
The only Star Trek theme that has remained unchanged during the entire course of the series - I think that says it all. Maybe I am biased and nostalgic, watching Voyager being one of my earliest and dearest childhood memories, but this one is the best Star Trek theme. Thank you for this HQ recording.
I've only just started watching it with my dad, he's a long time Trekkie ... and I'm a Star Wars Fanboy. May the Force be with me in this comment section.
We played this in marching band like either my freshman or Sophomore year. I was friends with a Senior trumpet player (I played the clarinet), but we were both Trekkies, so it was super special. I missed her so much when she graduated. We unfortunately lost touch.
Love this theme, its kind of a mixture of sad, heroic and hope

May the force be with nimoys spirit.
ironhidewatson Wow. This is so true for all Trek Fans,me included!
Christian gallardo I'm a fan of both. Yes guys, it is possible to be a fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek.
Lt. General Jack O'Neill ultimate crossover , startrek, stwrwars, Stargate....
Bailey Fewell Good luck with the funding, would be cool though.
These are the voyages of the uss voyager its 70 year mission to return home....
Wasn't it actually 700 years or something?
Oh, I remember now. I think it was originally many years, but in the finale, it ended up being 7 years.
EpicPigmasks Actually, it was predicted to take 75 years, but ended up only taking 23 years.
Emma Meow They round short-cuts and new tech along the way such as Slip-Stream Drive, Wormholes, Spacial Singularity Catapults, etc
MrSonic935 That's a good one!
When that theme played for a few seconds in *Star Trek Picard* S1, E5 I shed a man tear, man!
Same, so many memories of all those episodes just came back in those few seconds
I knew there'd be someone else here because of that
It's why I am here as well. :)
Totally, made me shed a tear for sure.
More than one tear, my friend...
The theme for "First Contact" is easily an equal.
DS9 says hello :)
Mark U I would say it far surpasses this, it’s not an equal. This is fucking great but First Contact is legendary
Happy 25th Anniversary Voyager, I turned 28 yesterday, literally grew up with this show, janeway was MY captain and oh how I loved this show!
the one star trek theme that really gets me... I discovered I had somehow skipped a Voyager episode, so I decided to rewatch it, and I realized how much I must have missed the show because I began crying way too hard for a grown man when the intro played
You need to get out more 😂
I'm 28 years old right now, and I remember laying in bed as a kid and listening to my dad watch this just about every night. It really helped put me to sleep. And since it came on at about 10 pm, it was a sign for bedtime
Star wars and star treks music is absolute beauty.
Christian gallardo Star Wars sucks
+Coretteket blasphemic!!!
+Coretteket Both are equally majestic with their soundtracks. Case closed.
And what is with StarGate?
@@2004Minecraftfan no
Easily the best Star Trek to date, the only one I enjoyed and can watch through fully.
This theme is so beautiful, the whole opening is, fills you with a sense of wonder, curiosity, hope and captures the spirit of exploration
One of my first Star Trek shows I've watched when I was a little lad, around 5 years old, when analog was still around.
A heart wrenchingly gorgeous theme! Thank you Jerry Goldsmith!
The sound of my childhood
Mine too
Totally agree. Reminds me of more innocent times!
My thoughts exactly and what the theme suggests
BESTEST Star Trek theme EVER!!! I have this as a ring tone on my eyefone! W00-H00!!
Reminds me of growing up, watching the new episodes of Voyager and DS9 with Mum and Dad.
Same here mate, it was such a good feeling, now i'm watching the whole series again :)
This is my all-time favorite of the Star Trek series!!! Love voyager, love you Captain, Janeway!!
0:57 to 1:16 is pretty much the perfect ocean of stars slash space riff ever. So ridiculously good.
Hearing this theme briefly when the Tuvok changeling showed up was so amazing.
I like to think that no matter how much I dislike a Voyager episode, the first couple minutes put me in a glorious mood.
Ugh the general premise of the show was so great too.
Jerry Goldsmith, you deserved that Emmy award for this.
One of the best themes ever made. It's my ringtone (2019).
Mine too
Since i started watchin Star Trek a couple years ago, i ignored the new movies, i loved TNG, i liked tos, i liked enterprise (yes, i said it's name, deal with it) and i just started watching voyager, and boy am i in love with Star Trek!
Ds9?
@@iz723 Watched right after voyager, pretty good too
@@arayashikinoshaka I'm nearing the end of S3 TNG. My first star trek show. Its awesome. I now want a model 1701 - D.
I don’t remember anything about this Star Trek except it has the best theme music of any tv show ever made
This is the best television theme.
i just got into Voyager recently.
Long Live Frieza! The strongest in the Universe!
***** Let's face it, Endgame isn't perfect, but it's not the worst ending possible.
***** I know what you mean yeah, that would've been nice I agree. Let's just say that it wasn't about the ending, so much as "The Journey" ;)
***** exactly ;)
The 1st 54s sounds like a funeral theme an appropriate theme for a noble soul to depart from his corporeal being and ascend into what people consider the heavenily paradise. For example the Trumpets are playing loudly inviting the soul into paradise. Because even if in life we were not considered royalty. An invitation to Heaven makes all souls feel welcomed & appreciated like royalty. And this theme gives me that impression. All I could visualize was my father's soul ascending to Heaven greeted by a theme like this.
It's elegiac. I've always thought that. It's lovely.
Always since I was a kid loved this Orchestra to this show something bout those drums in the opening of it
I never saw the appeal for Star Trek at the time when I was young, as whenever I scrolled through channels and see it on, it just looked confusing to understand.
+Steven Kavanagh but we re getting another show in 2017 but odds are it will suck oh and lens flares suck
+Exile Studios We barely heard anything about it and already people are saying it sucks. How typical.
+Writer Shard I think it is going to be a nice Show because it won't be in the Abramverse
*@ UraniumGlow* Yes it will be. Anything based after Star Trek 2011 will be based in that timeline.
Actually.....star trek discovery is coming
Probably one of the only TV themes by award winning movie composer.
Man I just finished this show, and while it wasn't the best Star Trek, it certainly felt great to watch Voyager moving towards Earth.
At 1:18 when that horn is done playing it safe, always gets me
Voyager the underated show
Like it even had an amazing theme
I entered Star Trek Fandom with Voyager, after years of changing the channel whenever seeing Enterprise. I have watched them all now - and THIS IS THE BEST! It boldy goes where no theme has gone before!
This theme was incredible during a road trip to Colorado. Played the very moment we approached the canyon into Manitou Springs that led into Woodland Park. Definitely worthy to be played during an adventure.
At first I personally thought that TNG was the best... until I watched Voyager... When I watched the last episode of voyager, I was so upset! No more adventures by the voyager crew :(
That and "Endgame" was a terrible episode.
The last episode of Voyager is "Endgame"...
***** I cried and I am a grown man. Lol
yeah especially when tuvac did that last thing for neelix. That made me choke up.
There are novels, you know? The ones by Kirsten Beyer are particularly good, as far as Star Trek prose goes.
Is it controversial for me to say I actually very much liked star trek voyager?
Funny that you say red-headed. (Or was that intentional?)
(Like, maybe you enjoyed most of the characters of Voyager and the morale aspects, but not so much some of the alien races and individual decisions.)
I see no way liking Voyager could be controversial to, say, liking TNG or Farscape, same as one can like tea as well as prunes and tomato soup, though probably not at the very same time.
So, no, I don't think it's controversial by itself, to just like ST Voyager.
Same here man. Who cares if it isn't the best ST series? I loved it a lot. This theme song just makes me instantly happy to hear.
Don't worry man, I'm with you. Voyager is my gave star trek, and it always will be.
I LOVED this one. I grew up with a Star Trek house so Voyager is first then The Next Generation
The only Star Trek theme that has remained unchanged during the entire course of the series - I think that says it all.
Maybe I am biased and nostalgic, watching Voyager being one of my earliest and dearest childhood memories, but this one is the best Star Trek theme.
Thank you for this HQ recording.
My 5 yr old son hums this theme .. Brings a tear to my eye.
For some reason this particular theme always brings tears to my eyes. Beautiful.
This really captures the spirit of the series... a small ship, cast in deep space, just trying to get home. But not without hope!
Sometimes a theme doesn't need words to be awesome.
man, i can remember when i was a boy watching this with my dad.
I've only just started watching it with my dad, he's a long time Trekkie ... and I'm a Star Wars Fanboy.
May the Force be with me in this comment section.
I loved hearing a few notes of this in Picard as Seven beamed down.
voyager is fundamentally a very whatever show, but the theme is my favorite. absolutely beautiful, with a stunning majesty. i love it so dearly.
The most beautifully scored iteration of the series. Whether it's the best series is debatable, but this theme is outstanding.
This is the lullaby of my childhood. It always makes me feel safe and loved because I would watch it with my parents. :D
That note at 1:23 cuts right into my soul.
Watched this a lot during College and it brings back great memories.
Grew up on Voyager as my primary Trek series. Love it.
I just wanna fly and soar across the city of Boston with this theme playing big time!! ❤️❤️❤️
I like how Voyager goes for a more somber theme, opposed to the brilliant, adventerous feelings of the other series'.
Er... I wouldn't call this theme Somber. If anything, Voyagers theme is one of exploring the unknown, plunging ahead into a new frontier.
yoshitotem sounds more like an arcrestra
Remember dancing to this song as a child! It's been a while since I've heard this and tried to find it for years
I woke up with this theme in my head and spent hours trying to remember where i heard it. Damn this is amazing.
Oh the goose bumps... LOVE THIS THEME
I actually loved Voyager. Probably my second favorite series in Star Trek after TNG. But that intro, best one yet. Kinda sad yet positive.
We played this in marching band like either my freshman or Sophomore year. I was friends with a Senior trumpet player (I played the clarinet), but we were both Trekkies, so it was super special. I missed her so much when she graduated. We unfortunately lost touch.
In my opinion one of the best theme songs ever written -absolutely love it!
