Great review, you're the only person to mention the ambient mood lighting, i watched three previous videos and was looking at the audi s3 with the lighting and couldn't believe the golf R didn't have it too... others never mentioned it or had it on... thank you for the good review, this car is definitely the one im getting.
I bought one a week ago. It's absolutely phenomenal. I am a VW enthusiast, but I traded an Audi A5 Sportback for this and have ZERO regrets
I got a 2017 and just replaced it for a 2024, really like the improvements on it!
Amazing vehicle. Thanks for reviewing the manual version for us.
Great review, I have a '24 (Lapiz Blue, DSG) and it is a phenomenal car. I know there is mention of the infotainment, but honestly it's not bad at all once you spend a few days with the car. Mine is obviously 2 years newer, so perhaps there have been software updates since, but again, it's good. In fact, the slider buttons on the steering wheel work even better. As you mentioned for the driving experience, it is fantastic. And aesthetically, it looks awesome!
Car puts up crazy numbers . Would love to see what some cup tires or even Michelin 4s would do on this car.
Love your review and I am especially glad you see it as a more comfortable refined ride as that tends to be the big sacrifice. Seems BMW sets the bar for infotainment and they would do well to take note!
Excellent review - definitely more clearly stated than many other reviews. I have a 2022 manual and absolutely love it - bought Feb 1, 2022. The point of this car is to have a quiet, practical, about town car and a venomous monster that provides incredible acceleration, handling and feel just a prod of the accelerator way!!!. The R comes fully loaded and in my opinion is somewhat of a bargain! I note the comments about the infotainment cons, but I have found it to be quite good and intuitive (Over time!). I just don't feel the infotainment should ever be a deal-breaker! Reliability has been almost perfect with a software update the only unplanned visit to the dealer!
Wow! Congrats. Thanks for your feedback and glad to hear the infotainment is working out. Dated a girl in college who drove a GTI and man did I love it, and I cannot imagine the thrill of the R. Although I do love a stick shift the dual-clutch transmission on the automatic sounds pretty sweet.
yea I was surprised at the price there 47k in my area which is a good price especially when the type r is over priced and so is the corolla and honestly the vw sounds way better than the type r
I just wish it did not have that humongous moonroof... leave that garbage for soccer mom suvs, but on a hatchback, and is just extra weight. They should have left it like the mk7.5
@@psiturbo they made the 20th anniversary, that deleted it and had black wheels and side mirrors. I got the regular one in manual.
@@bucknut2000 I have one as well in lapiz blue, DSG. Yeah I know about the 20th. Also the moon roof interior cover does not block the light well. Many times I find myself reaching up to close it, when in fact it is. I may take mine to a tint shop and place ceramic film on the inside of the glass roof.
OK, now I'm thinking of selling my Mk6 (2+) R.😊 Excellent video presentation of the car. Thank you
Wait for them to fix the infotainment
Completely misleading review. The click bait headline says the car is a 2023. But it is not. It’s a 2022.
Yea wtf?! They need to change this asap
It’s because these tenth tier reviews need to trick the algorithm by saying it’s newer in the hope that RUclips will rank it higher.
No one watches this guys videos, so I guess who cares.
Just curiosity. Can you order the Akrapovic exhaust for the R in the US? I´ve got one and the sound is amazing.
Love the review. The answer was our 2015 Golf AWD TDi. The same coiour, six-speed manual. Before Diesel Gate. You can brag about HP all day, but you're driving torque. Our latest jaunt was Syracuse to Boston round trip back to Syracuse, NY - 624 miles [1,005 kilometres]. Averaged, pencil and paper 48.9 mpg-US [4.83 Liters per 100 km ]. Sixth gear on the turnpike, monster pulls from trailer trucks in the fast lanes from 40mph [US] to 80 mph [US] brilliant. Nothing could touch us. Nothing. And we have the update since 2016 for US spec emissions. [wink] Good review. We liked it. The AWD in diesel seemed more the future of the product, not the shortcomings. Torque. It's a bit#h but always under the pedal. Two thumbs up. Great review
Seems like The perfect car
I’ve had mine a month now and love it, it’s so capable and will demolish a British B road.
hey I have a QQ for what do you think is better the GR corrola or the Golf Car. I am in the market for an Hot hatch. and the prices are about the same. I also like to customize my cars so the Corola looks like there is a lot that can be done. but the Golf R looks like it alread come fully loaded. there is not much to do. If you where in the market for one of these two cars. what would you pick?
The R. Interior is way, way, nicer. And like the reviewer said, it’s a much more premium feeling drive. Yet can also be a hot rod. The GR is pretty much just a hot rod with a typical Corolla interior. Personally, I’d go with the beautiful interior that the 8 has. Which I do think is very beautiful. And don’t let the interface scare you. It’s super easy & intuitive.
How does the new Golf R compare to the GR Corolla, in terms of performance and ride quality?
I have deposits down for both cars.
I currently drive a Veloster N and the ride is pretty stiff, about as stiff a ride as I would like.
I'm hoping the ride is better in the Golf R and GRC.
The GR Corolla will be the better long term car, but if you plan on daily driving it, dont. Its an instant classic. I work for a Toyota dealership and will be receiving one some time this week.
i own the Golf R mk8 however and i doubt the ride quality will com close. GRCorolla is a track focused car similar to the type R and the Focus RS and they are both very rough riding vehicles, if you are looking for best bang for you buck with AWD get the Golf R. if you dont care about that and want to be different, get the GRC or do what i want to do and get both :)
The Golf R is better in every way. 2.0 is rock solid, DSG is amazing and the infotainment is quick and works well. The Toyota fan boys will say reliability will be better on the GR, but they only say that because of Toyota’s past. It’s a highly boosted 3 cylinder. No reason to think it will be more reliable than the 2.0 if people are being honest.
Golf R is a daily driver, Corolla GR is a track beast.
Just wonder what did you buy, eventually? I bought Golf R recently
Good review, but please change the title to 2022
I ordered 1 deep black pearl dsg. MSRP $47,641, they add mark up 10%. $52,405 then the state tax $4,388. Total $57,651
Do you think this is worth it? Thank you for the answers
A car, or, really, anything, is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay. If you feel comfortable paying that much, good on you. I'm a cheapskate and couldn't see myself paying that much for the experience, even though it is an excellent car.
most places are charging the markup. Do recall, those 5k do not transfer to the value of the car, is just free money for the dealership. It is not worth it, is more if you have the attitude as if when blowing money in the casino, you live once carpe diem mentality and well, have money to burn.
I almost bought one, had money to throw around, but the salesperson was such an arsze I walked away, cocky arrogant attitude. Came down on me as if they have this unicorn car.
Back to subject, compared to how the market is turning around, is not bad, I called to a few Iowa dealers and all wanted 10k markup plus 1k for ceramic coating bla bla.
The Dsg as you said 0 to 150 in 10 seconds basically
Manual 0 to 150 19 seconds or more
Big difference
The ultimate luxury hot hatch? Haven’t you seen the AMG A45S or the RS3?
Rewatching this review and seeing him praise VW and the Golf R’s manual transmission is ironic. Especially since VW just announced that the MK8.5 GTI/ Golf R’s will be DSG only. The manual has been officially killed.
#SaveTheManuals
I think the interior of the car is just a downgrade comparing with the mk7.5. Hopefully they could fix this in the 2024 model as they promised
Still no sunroof for us in North America. WTF?
Wait, from what I understand all MK8R's come fully loaded, including the pano sunroof for the US. You're seeing MK8R's without sunroofs?
Yea I heard Sunroof is a standard feature I wouldn’t worry about that
Love it, but the big downside is the touch sensitive. I'm afraid I may cracked it if I own one.
This thing 1020394 times
I think the 2020 mk7.5 is better.
It just looks better inside and out than the mk8. The touch buttons on the mk8 are a real bother. It does not take much in accidentally touch and activate a button. Where as the mk 7.5 has push buttons being a better option.
Power? Well. Let me tell you. I sit on 330hp 420 NM and 250kw and there is no way you will hit 4 seconds with the mk8 with only 315hp. I could just manage that with mine though. So? Why buy a mk8 when you can have a perfectly powerful capable mk7.5? All you need to do is add a tuning box as I did. Much cheaper!
After driving my car for almost 4 months every single day, you never accidentally press one of the haptic buttons on the steering wheel.
Youre just repeating the same thing everyone who hasnt driven one says. If you would rather have a much lower performing vehicle because of a piece of plastic on the interior that is hard and a touch sensor you just aren't into fun performance cars . A DSG gti is doing 5.2 0-60 and this car is running a 12.5 1/4 mile.... Who cares about a touch sensor when you are running ford mustang acceleration number while getting over 30mpg on the highway.
@@quicktoreason2722 the mk8 performs much better . Just hating. People do it every time a new one comes out
At my age (79) I love my 2019 GTI. Buttons, switches, and knobs (love those knobs) ! It’s just a little youthful for me. Maybe change to an Audi A3 !

Title says 2023..first few words out of reviewers mouth are 2022. Soooo which is it?
This is a 2022
The video title needs to be changed
DSG only ●
Super dark and saturated video
CLICK BAIT
Go cry about it
I actually enjoyed this review a lot and I have watch like a dozen about the MK8R's on the tube. But I agree with some people saying "click bait" to a degree. Why not just update the title to be 2022, instead of 2023? Should be fairly painless and quick to do.
@@DriveBreakFixRepeat why don’t you grow a pair and change the title. I’m not subscribing to your channel because of this
Why does he talk like that, so annoying
