It’s refreshing seeing a car review from the point of view of a casual driver, and not an enthusiast.
Agreed! Not everyone drives their car at 9/10ths
I agree, but at the end of the day though, it’s an enthusiast car . 🤷🏽♂️ normal people won’t buy this.
@@nevercedes2070 your average soccer mom won’t buy this unless she grew up driving rabbits lol
Kudos to Evie for knowing how to drive a manual. This is a skill that anyone should have respect for considering manuals won’t be around that long especially with electrification on the rise.
No, manual cars will still be around. First reason is, most all countries outside of USA drives stick. They are the most commonly driven cars almost anywhere. Second EVs are super expensive, so people in developing countries or where people can't easily afford them...they are a non factor. So, as long as other countries need them or there is a market, then the America will also have them. There may be far less Americans that drive stick, but plenty enough to keep them around.
I feel like she would love this even more on the interstate where she can just cruise in 6th and pass people like mad lol. “Oh no Evies in Drift Mode” LOL
I love hearing her criticisms as an average person. Its useful because sometimes all the "reviewers" agree something is bad or great..and when i get in the car im like "what are they talking about!"
That’s great to hear! The whole point of these videos with Evie driving is to get that average person perspective. I agree, there’s value in hearing from a non-reviewer.
Exactly….
I think Evie would probably have enjoyed the DSG a lot more.
It is an honest review of what many people would think in truth. This is exactly what my wife thinks about my 2018 Golf R. All the things I like, she hates. She thinks it is too bumpy, too “fast feeling”, too much work to drive (I have a manual too), and not comfy enough. Puts it in perspective when enthusiasts say it is a ‘soft’ enthusiast car…all relative. In fact I even agree with her sometimes , and choose our SUV if I just want to relax on a drive. Even in comfort mode, the spring rates make you feel every bump (they are adjustable DAMPERS, not adjustable springs). Still it is the best car I have ever owned all around, and love the fact that it can be “turned on” and become a fun drive at any moment. It makes my 20 mile commute on a windy road, an absolute blast.
I just don't understand why car designers keep trying to get rid of knobs...that user interface was perfected years and years ago, and doesn't need a redesign.
Money my friend. It’s cheaper to incorporate everything in a slab of plastic than have high quality knobs.
Great running footage, it made me want one!
First video, subbed! This is very refreshing
LOVE THESE REVIEWS! honestly! makes you want to just own the car! LOVE IT!
A dealership told me $52k out the door. $5000 mark up.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Family review! Nice t-shirt Micah!
Thank you, Steve!
Awww, the poor little bug. Mama was driving very un-Sweetie like and the bug's belly reacted badly.
I was considering this car but the infotainment and capacitive buttons on the steering wheel are a deal breaker for me.
infotainment is actually very good once you get used to it. I have had my R for 3 weeks and i love it.
How did you find sound insulation, much road noise coming into the cabin?
Who else thought the back window was going to have vomit on it in drift mode? :-). Glad she was ok. Our daughter anointed our Telluride similarly when it was new. Thank you all weather mats!
Excellent video! I’d love to see Evie drift it too 😸
This is the voice I never heard in our community, the kid at the back also adds a complete different dimension of Doug reviews,do more of this stuff ,it would be fun to watch
You guys are amazing.
This is the 1st video I have seen where the driving of this car has been the normal legal driving that most of us would be doing 90+% of the time. Thank you. This is what I wanted to know about this car. Curious: driving it sensibly like this, how was your mileage? Cheers!
Evie with the manual!!! 💪🏾 I knew she wouldn’t like this car! 🤣 but the good news is I learned a brand new word: Fun Gap! 🤣🤣🤣
Micah at 1.12, the footage of you on the road passing the sign, your daughter jumped down off the ledge by the tree??
Lol good eye
That's exactly why I paused the video and came to check the comments too.
Yeah kudos to Evie for calling bullshit on so called “fun” performance cars, especially in a world where having such “fun” is borderline illegal and dangerous; actual fun can be relaxed enjoyment of driving (even in a car like the Outback Wilderness, as you both reviewed) as well as trips in the car and not requiring pushing any limit - a revelation in car reviews - definitely not crazy! Speed is a simple pleasure but there are certainly more refined forms of pleasure and enjoyment, part of what gives these reviews greater richness and value. There is also the realisation recognised by Evie that a performance car can actually make for a far less enjoyable driving experience if you are not highly engaged with needless intensity in the driving experience!
Anton, thanks for leaving such a thoughtful response. Your perspective is exactly why I love having Evie in our videos. It's really easy for car reviewers to lose touch with how real drivers engage with their vehicles. I appreciate your encouraging words. Cheers!!
What about wireless CarPlay?
:( that infotainment :( The new rear torque vectoring system looks so good, but the UI and the haptic buttons on the steering wheel make this a difficult car to pull the trigger on (says the guy who has owned three GTIs and loves his current MkVII GTI Sport).
Hi GTI brother! Check out the GTI Clubsport build on my channel! 👍
Thanks for doing this !!! Best practice for wife acceptance factor is clearly the DSG. The manual is over the top overwhelming, especially with infotainmwnt
Is the golf R roomy?
I love family reviews with a child in the back
First dozen years of driving I only had manual transmission cars. Finally bought an automatic car. After a few trips on Bay Area freeways during rush hour and up and down San Francisco's hills I was sold. I've never owned a manual since. So yeah, I totally get why Evie wouldn't be comfortable driving one after a couple years.
Even at 53 I’m definitely looking at getting me one of these in white 👍🏾👍🏾
Evie single handily and expertly explains why manual transmissions are dying a slow death. Unless you drive a Miata they really aren’t necessary in modern vehicles.
Just wait for the Europeans to come and explain themselves and their manual transmissions...
European here. And I drive a Miata 😆
...actually, I think manuals are till necessary in cars. I am much more aware of what the car is doing (speed wise) in a manual vs an automatic. If Evie wasn't having fun in the manual, then it would be much less so in an automatic/DSG.
@@K03sport Unless you drive a Miata then I’m afraid you know not what you speak. Even the 911 is better with the PDK than the manual.
@@Brian-jv8iy Do your own research buddy. Go do some driving or perhaps using the google machine is a better option? Either way I’m 1000% correct.
I just LOVE 💕 Evie. I love her style. She’s adventurous, and so smart, and Can drive a stick! Micah, the GODS have blessed you so much. And on top of that blessed you with the cutest little girl. I love watching her grow. I know it’s way to fast.
Gene, what a lovely comment to greet me on a Monday. Thanks for your kindness! Every day I make sure to count my blessings.
I’m glad the baby was ok! I thought it to be a bit curious though that you would do those donuts after that scare but I do love some donuts…. The Hyundai and Honda unfortunately are not available with AWD. The Subaru has THEEE BEST AWD in the class but the front seat track doesn’t move enough for taller folks. It’s also missing some of the modern amenities others are offering. I really enjoyed my GTI but FWD is a no go for me. That wheel hop (especially) in rain was so frustrating. It’s also a bit snug but I know that’s what contributes to those driving dynamics. If they could stretch it to give us another 3-4 inches of rear legroom the Golf R would definitely be on my list 👍
Evie is not crazy. I’m guessing she would prefer that same drive in a GTI with the DSG and Winter or All-Weather tires, PLUS a lot more color choice to make her “cute” hatch pop if she goes GTI.
When are you going to do a meet and greet up in Big Bear? It'll be fun to see you do 2 minute reviews on people's personal cars.
Maybe not for Evie but perfect for me.
Evie needs to be in every review…she is so likable
Love the authentic family experience. Fast forward to "PUKE SITUATION" @8:56. 😅
Not a voice I can listen to. Bless your heart.
I've seen this in many reviews that with the Golf R many people just say go with the DSG. I love the manual in my ND Miata and couldn't imagine why anyone would buy an automatic. Perhaps with the Golf R the shifting just doesn't feel connected to the driving experience and feels more like a video game?
What many people unfamiliar with VW's DSG don't grasp is that it isn't a traditional "automatic" transmission. It's an automated clutch paired with a traditional manual transmission. If desired, a DSG transmission can be driven in manual mode and will hold the gear selected all the way to the engine's redline. And if that isn't sufficient, a minor tune to the chip controlling the transmission enables (a) custom programming of the shift points and (b) holding the gear at and beyond the redline. Over several decades I had always had at least one MT vehicle in my garage until I opted for the DSG in a Mk 6 GTI. When I replaced that car with a 7.5 version, I didn't hesitate to go with the DSG again.
Granted that it isn't as "engaging" as a 3 pedal MT but it has (a) superior performance and (b) much greater flexibility for daily driving, especially in heavy traffic. And yes, I still enjoy driving an MT vehicle. And that's why when it came to getting a car for my teenaged daughter last year I opted at her request for a VW CC with a manual transmission.
As Stephen Hendricks said the VW DSG is not a typical Automatic. Not even close. Now to answer why someone would buy a DSG over a Manual Golf R, I purchased mine in DSG because the Transmission can handle much more torque than the manual clutch. The Manual is slightly de-tuned versus the DSG because of this. This car like all other VW/AUDI products take very well to tuning. With a flash tune this car could easily pick up 80 to 100 HP and about the same torque. The DSG almost feels like it reads your mind in this car. When slightly lifting off the throttle in a sweeper it does not up shift even if your in the top of the rev range. I have at least ECU and DSG tuned every VW we have owned. My Wife's Arteon is a completely different vehicle with the APR stage one tune. In Europe VW does not even offer this Gen Golf R in Manual. They must know something.
2:23-2:34
You’re not having fun because you’re driving at 45mph or below just cruising through an easy windy road haha. An Aventador would feel boring doing the same thing lol
Even if the DSG is better...The manual is definitely the better choice 🙂
Obviously, you don't engage in a daily commute in Seattle traffic.
@@stephenhendricks103 does Chicago count?
Important to mention is not only are the new GTI and R horrendous, but at night things like the volume slider don't even illuminate. Just so much cost cutting inside on the interior and bad tech that I could never recommend to anyone. A nightmare to use.
Evie was the best part of this review
Love when children get old enough to give you a heads up they are going to be sick instead of spewing it without notice. Drunk adults also for same reason :| Always loved the styling of the VW Golf, still have a few years before looking for a new car but this is on the short list.
I have a feeling VW is gonna bring back the physical buttons on the middle cycle refresh.
A refresh of the infotainment system with the same layout and size just buttons
Compare to the Golf GTI Clubsport seen on my channel: same engine and the MK7 Golf R's is 38 turbo. Differance being its DSG 6-speed so faster transmission, its a BSR Stage 1 tune at moment pushing 360 hp / 462 torque. Planning invidia downpipe swap, DSG Stage 2+ tune by TVS Engineering (best) & maby a Revo Stage 2 ECU tune later. Check & follow the build on my channel! 👍
Loving the new golf r
when you choose manual transmission you commit to rowing the the vehicle around including in traffic
I wish we had the wagon variant like in Europe.
Never thought about it until Micah said "fun gap ... wears glasses and a hat": Evie could be a grownup Tina from Bob's Burgers. That is a good thing for me cause I crush on Tina :)
I think VW made a judgement error in adopting an all-touch infotainment system. 'Such a great car - but with a driver-unfriendly interface diverting too much attention from the road. Yes, it looks stylish and futuristic, but...
Hey, am I the only viewer who thought "drift mode" was likely to trigger another puke-stop? That was such a cute, "real family"-type moment.
Different strokes for different folks! As a former VW fanboy(owned 4 over 20yrs) diesel gate has killed the quality of VW.. gloss black plastic, no gas struts for the hood, hard plastic and capacitive touch and digital screens are all cost saving measures that really drag down the make...I moved on to Audi back in 2018.
...I was all set to replace my then 12 yo Mk4 GTI w/a 6spd TDI Sportwwagen...then boom...diesel-gate thing killed that as VW had to stop selling them until the "fix". After that, my love/want for a VW dropped. I considered a '19 Alltrack, but supply/availability of a 6spd was nill in a 300 mile radius of me (1 in a color combo I did not like)...so, my 2nd VW ownership plans fell through......
"If you're gonna spew, spew into this."
I thought Micah was drinking a Tab there for a second. :D
I wouldn’t turn away a Tab. 😁
Aww “Nuts” I missed the Squirrel 🐿!!
Another great Muzio Family review! It sounds like it is a nice car but overpriced and with lots of competition. As for the pathetic infotainment controls and steering wheel switchgear, they would make anyone nauseous, adult or child!
1:10 I see you!!!
Seems like all reviewers got together and decided to hate the info system and the button less design. I am.an actual owner and i have lived with it for a few weeks now and I totally love it. Not saying is perfect but it is so so so far better than what many reviewers are saying. Mk8.5 brought the buttons back and honestly... looks like a step backwards in tech
Ouch, when you spoke about the infotainment system....yuck. As a Type R owner I know exactly what you meant! I purposefully bought my 2019 Type R because it has the knobs!!! HUGE screwup on VW's part. OUCH.
100%. It very much feels like an unfortunate phase. Oh, VW. 💁♂️
Fyi: The torque figures are not correct. The correct figure is 310lb-ft.
Can’t wait for your daughter to be older and watches these videos of her parents and their adult jokes 🤣🤣🤣
Too bad it's MacPherson Strut I wish it's an independent suspension
The DSG would be more sedate and less involving but faster. she would probably like that more.
Except the interior design everything is nice

They (VW) got the front all wrong in my opinion. Does it feel different than previous generations, like the MK4.:R or the Mk6, etc? I don't know VW's future plans, but I detest the new 'buttons' and infotainment direction. Give me my Mk4 GTI entertainment/HVAC all day, every day (not climatroinic)
The Golf in Australia is becoming a very poor value proposition. Plus I’m just a bit bored with it.
Must agree. Way to expensive now when you can get an M2 Beemer for around same price. When i bought the GTI Clubsport seen on my channel, it was a diffrent story. We had a special offer here in Sweden, so it was same price as the standard gti for this 40 year anniversary (with among other spec same turbo as MK7 Golf R)
Dude, you got balls drifting that thing even after the vomit alert.
Hahah the fun gap.

This made me laugh. Cheers!

How much fun can you have when you're driving your family around? Once you get to your second child, all that walking on egg shells ends, but not before.
Is Evie a Pirate? If so, then of course she would drive a Golf ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! 🏴☠️
She's right. This is a car for a sports car enthusiasts who wants practicality but lots of engagement and agility. If you want something fun but sedate there are better cars. She might like the Mazda 3 turbo. The R is something I would really value, minus the stupid infotainment
Evie not crazy to pay $45k for a VW golf r is she not like. Lots of other great options at that amt.

AWWW POOR THING!!! All the bumps and high altitude bothered her tummy ?? She’s such a cute little girl ! All the spinning around especially when Dad was driving . I might get close to puking too !!!! I love you guys though 😘😘
1:12 is that a kid jumping?
Come for the car reviews, stay for the relatable kiddo puke content.
If you want to give up more power but save even more money and get more cargo space, go back in time and get a Sportwagen. I went from a 2008 WRX to a 2018 Sportwagen (both manual & AWD) when I hit my mid 30s and honestly it was barely a downgrade. And bonus it gets a combined 35mpg.
Evie is right not to like the MK8. The negatives far out weighs the positives. It's a real shame. I'm a big fan of the Golf, this is first time I've really hated a Golf.
Creeeeepy Comments🤨
Poor kiddo, hope she recovered quickly. May need to find a boring freeway to film on
Every road where we live is a curvy road. 😕 Luckily a little time outside the car got her back to her happy self.
Yeah, VW made the mk8 feel and look cheap. I will wait for them to make it better.
Good to know it’s family friendly. Informative but glad I’m not leaving it up to Evie 🤦♂️ besides the family friendly aspect this car should be a big hit. Only drive it if you know what you’re driving and how to drive it.
VW’s never change. Fun to drive, but not to own.
The Golf R is very mature, not boy-racerish at all. And way better looking than the hideous but capable WRX.... Mazda 3 turbo 5-door please.
The only downside to the STi is the 'race me" wing on the back. I know you can spec 1 w/o the wing, but why. Of course even in my WRX, ppl always think I want to "race" when I'm cruising on the highway. The Golf-R would be much more stealth in the this area. Oh, the STi rides a bit rougher and doesn't respond/take to mods as well/easily as the Golf-R
Great couple. Great reviews. But the baby-talk is is very distracting.
Infotainment terrible. Did they design it during octoberfest?
The car reviews are great. So, is it wrong to enjoy the drives around Big Bear even more than the cars themselves? 😉
