Epic Pickup Truck Camper Makeover: What $1500 Can Do! - Part 1

- Last year I sold my RV at the beginning of the year.
I needed a place to stay and sleep while working at the drop zone. My initial plan was to sleep in my station wagon. Then my father in law died and I ended up buying his old truck.
This is the transformation of that truck as a truck camper for me to sleep in at the drop zone and while doing parks on the air far from home.

A little late to the party here. A thought about supporting the foot of the bed platform, use a piano hinge at the end with the same plywood used for the bed platform. When the tailgate is down swing the new end support up and use it for a “desktop” or whatever. Of course you’ll also need some way to support the raised desk, maybe a couple hinged 1x1 boards that are stowed up when closed. I enjoy this kind of video, I’m an old codger/coffin-dodger these days and wish I had done these sort of things when I was younger. Nice to live my now fantasies through videos like this, great job!
I might have to make that mod, the extra ledge could be handy. Thanks!
Cool project. Now you got me looking for a topper for my truck!
Go for it! I have seen it done many ways, if you search YT you will find many such conversions done, that is how I got some ideas for mine.
👏👏👏👏 those uncles are so proud!!!
Eso espero. Pero do not worry, that is a bobbery.
Very cool! I can't wait to see how it turns out.
Thanks Mike!
Did you consider putting the battery under the bed platform? I'm sure you did. Maybe the location keeps things from sliding around?
I wanted to but in order to do so I would have had to make the bed platform taller and that takes away even more head room for when I'm getting in and out of the bed. Now that you mention it, this being an LiFePo4 battery I can put it on its side, I may go check the dimensions and see if it will fit sideways under the bed, that would be lovely because the area under the bed that is covered by the fridge isn't very usable as storage.
@@LifeAtTerminalVelocity Thanks for sharing... It's a cool project!
Well I checked. Not enough space under the bed by an inch and a half. Such is life.
I LOVE this idea. I hate renting hotel rooms, and prefer to drive anywhere I travel. (Flying Commercial is TERRIBLE). Carlos, I gotta ask what is the pen on the left side (not the pink one) around 6:35 ? Looking forward to the rest of this series!
Paul, do you really want me to send you down that expensive rabbit hole? If you do, I'll gladly tell you but take it from a guy that has been bitten by the fancy pen bug, it is worse than radios. I'll start by saying that it is a fountain pen. If you want the details reply to this and I'll gladly send you down the rabbit hole. :)
@LifeAtTerminalVelocity why is it that we collect these things? Lol. I've got 4 fountain pens. Don't mind looking at a new one, but I'm more excited to see how the truck turns out! Thanks for the quick response.
You asked for it - darksucks.com/products/alpha-pen-en-bamboo-se Dude I'm here to tell you that Jason makes a KILLER pen.
Also - Good to know that there are a few of us radio people that also enjoy a good pen. Josh uses a Lamy.
@LifeAtTerminalVelocity so there should be some pen discussion in an upcoming live stream!
Cool idea, Carlos! If you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? I don't think this would work for taller, fluffier individuals like myself. Sure would make POTA and camping trips easier though!

Hi Joseph, not at all. I'm short, 1.67m. A Ford Ranger would not work for you or anyone taller than about 1.77m. However my brother in law is 2.03m and he has done something similar with a pickup truck that has a bed length of 2.44m. He had to take the slice he cut off his mattress and add it to the bottom to get the length right for him. In Canada I would also suggest adding some rigid foam insulation to the bottom and sides of the bed to make spring and fall a little more tolerable.
73!
