And not pursuing doesn’t mean the criminal is just gonna stop… I’ve seen several cases where the criminal just continues on and gets into a fatal crash anyways 🤷🏾‍♂️ we’ve gotta start holding the right people accountable. If you want a defined and better pursuit policy, that’s fine by me - but we’ve also got to start blaming criminals instead of victimizing them.

      @@147salsa you’re all over the comment section eh? lol. If the off duty officer had of just followed the suspect instead of engaging him, the police could have just followed him to whatever party he was heading to and busted him there. Instead, they chase him, making the suspect panic and flee. When stressed and panicking people usually make irrational decisions, like turning onto the 401 the wrong way. Also, if the police had of backed off after the chase went to the highway the suspect may have thought he got away and slowed down/pulled over to ditch the vehicle and bail. Continuing to chase him made him more and more panicked and caused irrational behaviour. There are so many other ways this could have been handled. They could have shut down the highway ahead to stop the suspect, police chopper, anything else. The more cars going the wrong way just adds to the danger. Think.

    From listening to local law enforcement for many years in the GTA, it is common protocol to not engage in pursuits, even in the middle of the night when traffic is pretty much non existent. Why this chase took place, especially during the time that it did, is the major question. As far as the helicopter being used, it is only in service on certain nights through the week, and even if it was dispatched for service, it would take too long to get up in the air for just this incident.

    • @dickmanson2081
      @dickmanson2081 18 дней назад

      A business being reimbursed for their loss by their insurance company does come close to compensating for the increase in their rates because "now they're a higher risk". Security guards can't stop thieves, LP officers can't stop them, and employees (due to corporate liability) have long been encouraged to not even try to confront them, let alone stop them...and the thieves know it. Since we have been "allowed out again" after the ending of Covid protocols, no less than 22 businesses in the downtown core of my sleepy little burg have closed up shop because they could no longer pay their insurance premiums because of the increase in rates of theft. This has also, as a result, put over 170 people out of work at those businesses, and put a greater strain on the social safety net. If there were actual consequences for criminals, businesses wouldn't need as much insurance and their rates wouldn't be so high.

    Bad police tactics lead to bad outcomes! There's no way public safety should be overlooked during a police chase!

    This was a seriously lack of judgement on Durham regions police officers. It was at the height of traffic, and even the OPP in the correct lanes asked their dispatcher to contact Durham's sergeant and head of communications to tell the Durham Officers pursuing in the wrong lanes to stop the chase or someone is going to be killed. The OPP dispatcher said they were actually in the midst of doing that but it didn't get done soon enough. All officers know that when it gets to dangerous which this was without a doubt call it off. Sadly those officers decided they were going to risk the publics safety and get their man. Shame on them for this careless decision. I hope the family sues because they will win big.

    With Toronto's attitude about car thefts and how residents are supposed to leave their doors open and keys at the front door, why not leave the doors unlocked at the LCBO too? TIC.

    There needs to be better coordination between police and the ministry of transportation to develope a system to better inform the public immediately, and close down lanes of the highway.
    The electronic message boards along the 400 series should made to flash and display an emergency message like "please pull over to the shoulder, this highway is closed due to active police pursuit!". Something along those lines to warn drivers, and not allow the organized criminals to escape.
